Woke shit started in early 70’s and harmed a very vulnerable section of society. Believe it or not, these facilities wereNOT ALL LIKE“The one that flew of the cuckoo’s nest”, they were taken care of and could relate to others with them. They were safe, well fed and felt community. When they closed the facilities and caste them out, they took human interaction away from their caregivers.

 

The hideous system and decision was based on what sane people could accomplish and live, not people with brain trauma or other causes. They never considered the compassion to protect them was imperative. Not all but many.

 

God bless Uncle Pete, he was hit by a car as a child, with brain damage. And years later he was kicked out of the only place he could truly be cared for.

 

They were turned out on the streets to die. And many families could never find or help them.

In typical criminal law, time served is an informal term that describes the duration of pretrial detention (remand), the time period between when a defendant is arrested and when they are convicted. Time served does not include time served on bail but only during incarceration and can range from days to, in rare cases, years. A sentence of time served means that the defendant has been sentenced to confinement, albeit retroactively fulfilled by the pretrial detention; therefore, the defendant goes free.[1]

 

A sentence of time served may result from plea bargains in which in exchange for only receiving a sentence that involves no additional period of incarceration, a defendant accepts a guilty plea. Additional terms of sentence that may accompany a sentence of served also include a probation, a fine, or unpaid community service.[2]

 

Statistics released in 2020 by the Victorian Sentencing Advisory Council show that 67% of people sentenced to prison in Victoria, Australia in 2017–18 spent at least one day in remand, up from 47% in 2011–12. In the same year, of the cases that Victorian courts issued imprisonment orders to, 66% exceeded time served (meaning additional time needed to be served), 29% matched time served (meaning no additional imprisonment), and 5% were less than time served (meaning the defendant was over-detained during remand). The council called the over-detention a "matter of concern", as the defendant spent longer in detention than the ultimate duration of the sentence. The council also highlighted that lower courts, such as magistrates' court, tended to give more time served sentences than higher courts.[3]

President Trump has issued a major statement following the high stakes afternoon meetings with Ukraine's Zelensky, who finally put on a suit this time, and seven EU leaders.

 

Trump announced that he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone and initiated plans for a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. There is further after that a trilateral meeting coming, at an as yet undisclosed time and place. He called the development "very good" and said "everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE". So far, Russian state media has reacted only vaguely with the following via TASS:

 

US President Donald Trump interrupted his talks with Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders to call Russian President Vladimir Putin, Germany’s Bild newspaper reports, citing its Deputy Editor-in-Chief Paul Ronzheimer.

 

According to Bild, the White House consultations are expected to continue after the call.

Google, Kairos Power plan advanced nuclear plant for Tennessee Valley Authority grid by 2030

-Google and Kairos Power will deploy an advanced nuclear reactor to help power the tech company’s data centers on the Tennessee Valley Authority grid.

Alphabet’s Google and Kairos Power will deploy an advanced nuclear plant connected to the Tennessee Valley Authority’s electric grid by 2030, the companies announced Monday.

 

TVA has agreed to purchase up to 50 megawatts of power from Kairos’ Hermes 2 reactor. It is the first utility in the U.S. to sign a power purchase agreement with an advanced reactor like Hermes 2, according to the companies.

 

Hermes 2 is the first deployment under an agreement that Google and Kairos signed last year to launch the startup’s nuclear technology at a commercial scale. The reactor’s output is the equivalent of the consumption of about 36,000 homes. The electricity will help power Google’s data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama.

 

Google, Kairos and TVA said their collaboration will move the U.S. a step closer to deploying advanced nuclear reactors by making sure consumers are not on the hook for the cost of building the plant.

 

Kairos and Google will bear the financial risk associated with building the first-of-a-kind project, the companies said. TVA, meanwhile, is providing the revenue stream the plant will need to operate through the power purchase agreement.

 

“We think this solves the problem of making sure that consumers don’t carry that first-of-a-kind cost and risk,” TVA CEO Don Moul told CNBC. “But it also allows innovators like Kairos Power and thought leaders like Google to bring this to market.”

 

Hermes 2 is expected to start operating at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in 2030. Kairos received a construction permit for the reactor from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in November 2024. It will need to apply for an operating license with the NRC before the plant can start operations.

 

TVA declined to disclose how much it will pay for electricity from Hermes 2 when asked by CNBC. Kairos declined to disclose the estimated cost of the plant.

 

The U.S. has basically stopped building nuclear plants due to the huge cost overruns and delays that plague the industry. The last two reactors built in the U.S. at Plant Vogtle in Georgia cost $18 billion more than expected and started operations seven years behind schedule in 2023 and 2024. The project’s problems contributed to the bankruptcy of industry stalwart Westinghouse.

 

Startups like Kairos believe their smaller plants will prove to be faster and more affordable to build than large reactors like those at Vogtle, helping to usher in a new era of nuclear construction in the U.S. Despite these promises, utilities have been reluctant to commit to small advanced reactors over concerns about the initial price tag.

 

Technology companies like Google, meanwhile, are investing in advanced nuclear because they want reliable, carbon-free power to meet the demand from artificial intelligence while adhering to their environmental goals. Google has placed orders with Kairos for reactors totaling 500 megawatts of power that are targeted to come online through 2035.

 

“We specifically want to help commercialize,” Amanda Peterson Corio, Google’s global head of data center energy, told CNBC. “We want to see how can we take this from something small to something bigger that we can deploy at scale. That’s really what the Hermes 2 project is doing.”

 

One of Kairos’ goals with Hermes 2 is to create a standardized reactor design which will help cut the cost of future deployments, CEO Mike Laufer told CNBC. Kairos will also develop the supply and manufacturing infrastructure needed to launch at scale through the construction of Hermes 2, he said.

 

“We’d be ready to deploy multiple reactors in series at the same sites in a very cost-efficient way to deliver that power at affordable rates in the not too distant future,” Laufer said. Kairos and Google are exploring options on where future plants will be deployed, he said.

 

Kairos’ technology is different than the reactors currently operating in the U.S. Its reactor design uses liquid salt as the coolant rather than light water, which allows the plant to operate at near atmospheric pressure. This means Kairos can use thinner and less expensive materials because the reactor is not under high pressure. Operating at low pressure also has safety advantages.

 

The 50-megawatt plant is also much smaller than the reactors in the current U.S. fleet that average 1,000 megawatts in output, which is enough to power an entire city. The Kairos reactor will increase its output to 75 megawatts when it launches on a commercial scale, Laufer said.

 

Hermes 2 will be deployed near Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which has a long history in nuclear science dating back to the Manhattan Project during World War II. TVA was established by Congress during the Great Depression as a public corporation to electrify the region. The utility remains owned by the federal government.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Three more Republican governors authorized the deployment of National Guard troops to Washington on Monday, part of President Donald Trump’s escalating show of force that he says is designed to crack down on crime and boost immigration enforcement in the nation’s capital. The announcements by Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana brought the number of state troops detailed to the president’s effort to more than 1,100 — and the number of states to six.

 

Governors from the states said they were responding to requests from the Trump administration to join the operation. It was not immediately clear why the administration requested additional military support. About 800 troops have already been called up from the Washington, D.C., guard and have had a limited assigned role so far in Trump’s 10-day-old attempted takeover of D.C. law enforcement.

 

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the descriptions of the operation needed to be more honest — and acknowledge that they weren’t just about curtailing crime but about immigration enforcement, a centerpiece of the second Trump administration that has echoed across the country in recent months. During a news conference, Bowser pushed back on Trump’s characterization of the city and voiced skepticism about the administration’s intentions.

 

“I think it makes the point that this is not about D.C. crime,” Bowser said of the administration and states deploying National Guard members onto the streets of the capital. “The focus should be on violent crime. … Nobody is against focusing on driving down any level of violence. And so if this is really about immigration enforcement, the administration should make that plain.”

 

Trump’s executive order that launched the federal operation declared a “crime emergency” in the District of Columbia and initiated a takeover of Washington’s police department. The administration has ordered local police to cooperate with federal agents on immigration enforcement, orders that would contradict local laws prohibiting such collaboration.

 

Federal agents have arrested 160 undocumented people in the district since the operation began, including people that White House officials allege are known gang members with prior felony offenses.

 

The executive order has led to friction with the local government and heightened tensions in the community as a surge of federal agents in the capital garner praise and protest from residents.

 

The nation’s capital can govern itself through powers delegated to it by Congress, though the federal laws that grant that autonomy give wide breadth to the president and Congress to intervene when they see fit. That longstanding tension has led to a legal standoff between local officials and the White House in the current troop deployment and surge of federal officers into the district.

 

In what could also heighten tensions on the streets, Washington has been informed about the intent for the National Guard to be armed, though it has not received details about when that could happen or where armed Guard members could be deployed in the District, according to a person familiar who was not authorized to disclose the plans and spoke on condition of anonymity.

 

It would be a departure from what the Pentagon and Army have said about the troops being unarmed. The Army said in a statement last week that “weapons are available if needed but will remain in the armory.” Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson also said last week that troops won’t be armed.

 

In response to questions about whether Guard members in Washington would be armed in the coming days, the District of Columbia National Guard said troops “may be armed consistent with their mission and training.” Maj. Melissa Heintz, a spokesperson for the D.C. Guard, didn’t provide more details.

 

The stepped-up guard presence grew further Monday with the new deployments from Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee, all led by Republican governors. A spokesperson for Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said that the governor had granted a request from the Trump administration for the state’s National Guard members “to assist with monument security, community safety patrols, protecting federal facilities, and traffic control.” The troops “are ready to assist as long as needed,” the governor’s office said.

 

In addition to Monday’s announcements, West Virginia said it was deploying 300 to 400 troops, South Carolina pledged 200 and Ohio said it will send 150 in the coming days, deployments that built on top of Trump’s initial order that 800 National Guard troops deploy as part of the federal intervention.

 

National Guard members in the District of Columbia have been assisting law enforcement with tasks including crowd control and patrolling landmarks such as the National Mall and Union Station. Their role has been limited thus far, and it remains unclear why additional troops would be needed, though attention-getting optics have long been a part of Trump’s playbook.

 

On Friday, the city’s attorney general sued the administration for appointing the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration as the city’s “emergency police commissioner.” The administration walked back the move but then issued a follow-up order that directed local police to “cooperate fully and completely with federal immigration authorities.”

 

“D.C. has been under siege from thugs and killers, but now, D.C. is back under Federal Control where it belongs,” Trump wrote on his social media website a day after issuing his order. “The White House is in charge. The Military and our Great Police will liberate this City, scrape away the filth, and make it safe, clean, habitable and beautiful once more!”

 

Federal agents from the DEA, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service and other agencies have patrolled high-traffic areas around the capital over the last week. ICE officers, who work under the Department of Homeland Security, have made arrests in neighborhoods across the city, dispersed some public gatherings and torn pro-immigrant signs, according to videos published by the administration.

 

The White House has touted various arrests that local police and federal agents have made across the city since Trump’s executive order. Federal agents have made 380 arrests in the week since the start of the operation and in some cases issued charges to detained people. The White House has touted the surge of agents on social media and posted pictures of people arrested by local and federal officers.

 

“Washington, DC is getting safer every night thanks to our law enforcement partners,” Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote on social media. “Just this weekend, 137 arrests were made and 21 illegal firearms were seized. In total, there have been nearly 400 arrests—and we are not slowing down.”

 

Amid the crackdown, the administration has received criticism for the conduct of some federal agents, who in several high-profile incidents have arrested people while wearing masks that hide their identity and declined to identify themselves to media or members of the public when questioned. Bowser said Monday that she had asked D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith to seek answers from the administration about the use of masked police.

 

“It’s very important to us that agents be identified,” Bowser said. “There’s no reason for a law enforcement official to be masked.”

 

On Monday, dozens of protesters gathered in the U Street neighborhood of Washington, where multiple federal agents patrols and arrests had taken place over the weekend, to protest the Trump administration’s actions.

The Tontitown Police Department arrested four individuals for child exploitation-related crimes over the weekend, according to a Facebook post.

Undercover operation leads to arrest of 5 men in child sex crime sting

 

Stopping internet crimes against children was the primary target for an undercover police operation that arrested five men in central Indiana.

 

Multiple police agencies, including Indiana State Police and the Indiana Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, led the charge on the three-day operation.

 

“The operation focused on identifying and apprehending individuals who used digital platforms to target

minors for criminal activity,” a Monday press release from the Boone County Case Task Force said. “Undercover officers engaged with suspects online by adopting various identities.”

RI Fire Marshal Charged In MA Federal Court With Possessing Child Pornography

 

The fire marshal was indicted by a federal grand jury, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

 

A Rhode Island fire marshal was arrested on child pornography charges, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston.

 

Jeffrey Almond, 41, the fire marshal for the town of Lincoln was indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston on charges of receipt of child pornography, possession of child pornography and attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a media release.

 

Almond appeared in federal court in Providence Friday and will appear in federal court in Boston at a later date, the release said.

 

Almond used various online platforms to obtain child sexual abuse material and to "engage in sexually explicit chat communications with undercover law enforcement posing as purported minors," according to the release.

 

"In these communications, it is alleged that Almond discussed the exploitation of children, with the purpose of obtaining (child sexual abuse material) or soliciting a child for sex," the release said. "It is further alleged that, on two separate occasions, Almond knowingly transferred or attempted to transfer obscene matter to a minor on Aug. 7, 2024, and on Nov. 28, 2024."

 

In August, 2024, Almond also "used a social media app to communicate with an undercover law enforcement officer who was posing as a 15-year-old girl," according to the release.

‘It’s quite eye-opening,’ New Kent County pair arrested for alleged child sex trafficking

 

Two women from New Kent County are currently behind bars after being arrested for child sex trafficking and exploitation.

 

The New Kent County Sheriff’s Office said an investigation lasting several months began after a tip was sent to Social Services involving the prostitution of a minor.

 

On Friday, Aug. 15, Victoria Creps, 27, and Jaiden Creps, 24, were arrested.

 

The pair are being charged with three felonies:

 

Prostitution, solicitation; commercial exploitation of a minor

Aiding prostitution or illicit sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 18

Commercial sex trafficking involving sex trafficking; prostitution, and commercial exploitation of a minor.

These charges add to a list of others from years prior for Victoria Creps, including petit larceny and assault of a family member.

 

Chief Deputy Joey McLaughlin with New Kent County Sheriff’s Office said a case like this is rare.

 

“It’s one of the first ones that we have had here in New Kent County, doesn’t happen everyday so it’s quite eye-opening,” McLaughlin said. “Kind of makes everyone realize that we do have some issues that we are trying to take care of here in the county and we want to eliminate it.”

 

The victim in this case and the two suspects know one another, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Five months after the investigation started, Guilford County Schools hired Villano as an English teacher at The Middle College at UNCG.

 

At the time he was hired, the accusations against him did not show up on his record.

 

"We were not able to square out the warrants until last Friday when we picked him up, so those warrants were not active when he got hired at his most recent position," Beck said.

 

Investigators say the encounters between Villano and the victims in Randolph County occurred bout online and in person.

 

When it comes to preventing cases like this, investigators are encouraging parents to stay involved with their child.

 

“That is so important, being aware of what’s out there and having that educational background to be able to go back and look and see what’s on your child’s phone," Beck said.

 

Villano is currently suspended from his current job with Guilford County Schools.

 

If convicted, he could face 47 months in prison for each count.

Far-right coalition members urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday to reject a reported ceasefire deal with Hamas, insisting he has no mandate to accept a partial agreement and should continue military operations in Gaza.

 

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir tweeted that “Netanyahu has no mandate to accept a partial deal.” He warned that halting the war now would be “a historic failure and a missed opportunity,” citing a previous incident in which Netanyahu allegedly ignored an ultimatum from U.S. President Donald Trump demanding the release of all hostages. In a video posted later, Ben-Gvir added: “The blood of our soldiers is not forfeit. We must go all the way, destroy Hamas.”

 

Religious Zionism MK Zvi Sukkot echoed the warning on social media, saying that a partial deal would leave half of the hostages at risk, endanger Israeli troops in future operations, provide breathing room to Hamas and erode remaining international legitimacy.

By contrast, opposition MK Benny Gantz expressed support for negotiating a deal. “The government has a clear majority and a broad safety net to return the hostages. Netanyahu, this is not the time to hesitate—it’s time to make the right decisions for the people and Israel’s security,” Gantz said.

Netanyahu addressed the reports in Arab media, saying: “I, like you, hear the reports in the media, and from them you can see one thing—Hamas is under atomic pressure.”

Amid the ongoing debate, the government is expected to discuss increasing the defense budget on Tuesday, including billions of shekels earmarked for humanitarian aid in Gaza. Ben-Gvir opposed funding he said could reach Hamas, while treasury officials stressed that aid would go through distribution centers operated by international organizations and directly to civilians.

Defense Minister Israel Katz said Hamas was only willing to discuss a hostage deal because of fears Israel intends to take over Gaza City. “Capturing the city will break Hamas,” Katz said, describing Gaza City as a center of military, governmental and symbolic weight. He added that cabinet decisions integrate military and diplomatic efforts with the aim of achieving war objectives while applying international pressure on Hamas.

The US pop star, considered one of the most successful female solo acts of all time and who was born and raised as a Catholic, shared her plea on Instagram.

 

"Most Holy Father, please go to Gaza and bring your light to the children before it's too late. As a mother, I cannot bear to watch their suffering. The children of the world belong to everyone."

 

She added: "You are the only one of us who cannot be denied entry. We need the humanitarian gates to be fully opened to save these innocent children.

 

"There is no more time. Please say you will go. Love, Madonna."

 

Her comments come after an Italian Catholic priest who has been harshly critical of Israel’s war in Gaza was denied entry to Israel and placed on a flight from Tel Aviv to Greece, reports The Times of Israel.

Father Nandino Capovilla, 63, a priest in Marghera, near Venice, landed at Ben Gurion Airport on 11 August to take part in a “Pilgrimage of Justice” organised by the Catholic peace movement Pax Christi.

 

Capovilla was reportedly stopped at border control and eventually given a form to sign, which stated that he could not enter Israel for reasons related to security or public order.

Israel has faced mounting pressure over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, with experts last month warning that "the worst-case scenario of famine" was playing out in the conflict zone, the BBC reports.

It notes that Madonna's plea comes as the UK, EU, Australia, Canada and Japan issued a statement saying "famine is unfolding in front of our eyes", while the nations urged action to "reverse starvation".

 

Last week, the BBC notes, the UN's humanitarian agency said the amount of aid entering Gaza continued to be "far below the minimum required". The agency said it continued to experience impediments and delays as it tries to collect aid from Israeli-controlled border zones.

Israel has continued to deny that starvation is occurring in Gaza and has accused UN agencies of not collecting aid at the border crossing points and delivering it.

In July, Pope Leo said that he is following the humanitarian crisis in Gaza with “great concern” while also renewing his “heartfelt appeal for a ceasefire”.

The Pope described how the civilian population in Gaza is being “crushed by hunger and continues to be exposed to violence and death”.

 

In a subsequent comment to her original Instagram post calling on the Pope, Madonna said: "Politics Cannot affect Change. Only consciousness can. Therefore I am Reaching out to a Man of God."

 

She went on to say: "I am not pointing fingers, placing blame or taking sides. Everyone is suffering. Including the mothers of the hostages. I pray that they are released as well."

Two prefabricated buildings were recently established by Israeli settlers in the Palestinian neighborhood of Tel Rumeida in Hebron without authorization, causing concern over access to Palestinian institutions immediately adjacent to the new structures.

 

According to the Peace Now organization, which campaigns against the settlement movement, the two caravans were set up several weeks ago on a plot of land west of the Jewish cemetery in the neighborhood, and adjacent to a mosque on one side and a Palestinian girls’ high school on the other.

 

The organizations said that access to the school and the entrances to the mosque for Palestinian residents are now at risk.

 

The Civil Administration, the Defense Ministry department that manages civilian affairs in the West Bank, said the two caravans had been set up “without authorization and in contravention of the law.”

 

It added that “enforcement,” — meaning removal — would take place “in accordance with the operational situation assessment and the guidance of the political echelon.”

 

A spokesman for Hebron’s Jewish community insisted, however, that the land was inside the H2 area of the divided city, under Israeli military control, and was part of the same plot as the Jewish cemetery.

 

Peace Now acknowledged that the land was owned by Jews prior to Israel’s 1948 War of Independence and the Jordanian annexation of the West Bank.

 

But it said that the original map appended to the 1997 Hebron Agreement, which created the H1 and H2 designations, placed the plot inside the H1 area.

 

Meanwhile, the map featured on the Civil Administration’s website shows the site of the caravans to be inside H2, and the department’s position is that they were established within the boundaries of the H2 area, albeit without authorization.

 

Hebron was divided into two sections under the Hebron Protocol signed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat in January 1997.

 

H1 includes 80 percent of the city and lies under full Palestinian Authority control. The H2 zone includes the Jewish settlement of some 800 residents, along with another 200 yeshiva students, according to the Hebron Jewish community.

 

Some 200 Jews live in the Tel Rumeida neighborhood, alongside several thousand Palestinians, although the site of the new prefabricated structures is separate from the Jewish area of the neighborhood.

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.
