Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of British India, played a central role in the partition of British India in 1947. Faced with escalating communal violence and political deadlock between the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League, Mountbatten concluded that a united India was no longer feasible. Radcliffe was given just over five weeks to draw the borders, resulting in the Radcliffe Line, which divided Punjab and Bengal and displaced millions.
Mountbatten accelerated the timeline from June 1948 to August 15, 1947, to prevent further unrest. The Indian Independence Act 1947, passed by the British Parliament, formalized the plan. While the partition ended British rule, it triggered one of the largest mass migrations in history, accompanied by widespread violence, loss of life, and long-term geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan.
