New UFO Files Detail FBI Records of 2026 Sightings

The U.S. Department of War has released a fresh tranche of documents relating to UFOs, which includes files regarding sightings in 2026.

Among the newly detailed encounters are accounts from two U.S. government special agents, including an afternoon incident documented with thermal video footage showing two slow-moving "black-hot" infrared anomalies

"Today, the Department of War is publishing the fifth release of declassified and historical Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) files as part of the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE)," said Sean Parnell, Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs and Chief Pentagon Spokesman.

The tranche also includes civilian encounters.

One witness reported three separate sightings within a five-hour window somewhere in the western United States. Additionally, a phone interview from a civilian logged similar incidents which were backed up by a second witness.

Together, the files demonstrate that federal investigators actively documented and analyzed real-time UAP reports this year. In many cases, the exact dates and locations have been redacted to "protect the identity of eyewitnesses, the location of government facilities, or potentially sensitive information about military sites not related to UAP."

Images Reconstruct Reported 2026 UAP Sighting

Friday's release included several digital renderings of a reported 2026 incident in the Western U.S.

One of them depicts a nighttime desert landscape with rocky terrain and mountains in the background. A silhouetted figure stands beside a parked vehicle while a trio of bright red lights appears suspended in the sky above the mountains.

Witnesses spotted a red light above a nearby mountain range, according to an accompanying FBI record. They initially believed the light was located on the mountainside, but said it began moving eastward and appeared to be thousands of feet above the ground.

After about 15 minutes of observation, they reported that six to 10 additional red lights appeared directly above their location. The witnesses said the lights then appeared to "sync up" and travel together toward the east-southeast.

During the sighting, one of the lights was said to descend rapidly before disappearing, while the remaining lights continued moving across the sky until they eventually vanished from view.

They were based on firsthand descriptions provided by "two U.S. persons," and the renderings were prepared by the FBI, the Defense Department said.

Another rendering depicted a bright, elongated object streaking downward above a mountainous desert landscape. Presented through what resembles a binocular view, the image depicts a luminous trail descending from the sky toward the horizon.

‘Black-Hot’ Objects Spotted on Thermal Camera

Another FBI report details a 2026 incident in which a witness using a thermal optical device observed two unidentified objects moving slowly above a mountain range.

The witness spotted a dark object in the sky, followed by a second object appearing nearby. The two objects appeared to travel together at the same speed for roughly five to 10 minutes before disappearing from view, said the report.

The witness recorded photographs and video of the objects but said they were unable to estimate their direction because of the distance involved. Both the exact date and location appear to have been redacted.

Footage released alongside the report features two, slow-moving areas of contrast registering as "black-hot" in infrared imaging.

Thermally Elevated Aerial Object

Another document in the release details a 2026 observation by U.S. Government Special Agent who reported spotting what was described as a "thermally elevated aerial object" while conducting surveillance in the western U.S.

According to the agent's written statement, the object appeared in roughly the same area and along a similar flight path as an object observed the previous night. The agent said the object appeared "hot" on thermal sensors and was traveling southbound.

To provide a point of comparison, the agent also recorded a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter operating in the area and estimated the unidentified object appeared to be roughly half the helicopter's size.

The report states that the object's distance prevented the agent from identifying its physical characteristics, configuration or means of propulsion, and it eventually disappeared from view behind terrain. Again, the exact date and location, appear to be excluded.

Three Sightings Over Five Hours

Another report describes a prolonged 2026 encounter in which two witnesses reported seeing multiple unexplained red lights over the course of roughly five hours.

The first sighting occurred between about 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., after the witnesses pulled over during rainy conditions with heavy cloud cover and observed dull red, "dash"-shaped lights moving along a mountain ridgeline.

Those lights disappeared after about 20 minutes, according to the report.

Another light was visible "directly above" their location for around 10 minutes before it, too, disappeared, it said.

Later, sometime between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., the witnesses reported another episode, saying similar lights appeared much closer to their position, including one estimated to be about 500 feet above their vehicle and another that appeared to stop roughly 6 feet off the ground.

Another unusual event followed, when one witness reported seeing a glow descend into a dry wash about 100 meters behind them and move through it.

Additional files would be released "on a rolling basis," the Defense Department said, adding that it was working with agency partners on the next release.

Enough with ‘theater diplomacy’ – Iran’s top negotiator to Trump

The US president will gain nothing from bullying, broken promises, and fake news, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has said

US President Donald Trump should curb his “theater diplomacy” as it will not work with Iran, Tehran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has said.

Trump announced on Saturday that he had called off a planned attack on Iran, which, according to him, would have been on a scale “not seen since World War II.” He claimed that he made the decision because Washington and Tehran were close to reaching a diplomatic solution to the conflict in the Middle East.

In the following days, the US president insisted that the two sides were “having very good discussions,” but warned that Iran would be “hit very hard” if the Strait of Hormuz, through which around one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil passes, was not reopened “very soon.” Tehran has repeatedly denied holding any direct negotiations with the Americans.

Ghalibaf took to X on Thursday to berate Trump’s approach to dealing with Tehran. “‘Massive attack coming… wait, never mind, they want to negotiate’. That’s theater diplomacy on loop,” he wrote.

The negotiator insisted that “using bullying + broken promises + fake news as leverage is a failed strategy.”

Ghalibaf advised Trump to instead “acknowledge the facts and fulfill your commitments. We don’t need more theater.”

Fighting between the Americans and the Iranians resumed last month after a dispute over control of the Strait of Hormuz derailed a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) that had established a temporary ceasefire and required Tehran to unblock the key waterway in exchange for Washington lifting its blockade of Iranian ports and relaxing sanctions.

The MoU had been intended to pave the way for a permanent settlement of the conflict, which began with a US-Israeli attack on Iran in late February.

On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei told reporters that negotiations with Oman on resuming commercial shipping in the Start of Hormuz were “nearing completion.” The two countries with access to the waterway have agreed on the routes and are in the final stage of drafting a joint statement, provided “certain third parties do not obstruct the process,” Baghaei said, in an apparent reference to Washington.

Cities Are Ditching Flock, Immediately Replacing It With Axon License Plate Readers

Rather than get rid of ALPR cameras entirely, many cities and towns are switching to Axon, whose cameras can be mounted to an existing streetlamp, helping them blend into their surroundings.

A handful of cities across the U.S. have ditched Flock’s automatic license plate reader (ALPR) cameras and immediately replaced them with equivalent systems from law enforcement contracting giant Axon, according to local media reports and government documents from around the country. Axon, for example, advertises AI-powered cameras that attach to an existing streetlamp and are designed to completely blend in with their surroundings, and also collects license plate data with cameras installed inside police officers’ patrol vehicles.

The switch to Axon, which is not yet widespread but appears to be increasing as people oppose Flock, signals what might come next for the nationwide conversation around ALPR cameras: instead of doing away with the cameras entirely — which 404 Media has linked to ICE, the tracking of a woman who self-administered an abortion, and rampant abuse by cops stalking their exes — some cities may enter contracts with another company which has faced less scrutiny and backlash.

In February, Syracuse lawmakers voted 7-1 to approve a license plate reader contract between the Syracuse Police Department and Axon, Central Current reported. That came after the department used Flock cameras starting in summer 2024, the outlet added.

In March, the Denver, Colorado, city council voted 7-6 to replace the city’s Flock cameras with Axon ones, Denver7 reported. The one-year contract was for 50 ALPR cameras, which is less than half of the total Flock cameras, the outlet added.

In June, Grand Chute, Wisconsin, voted to get rid of its Flock cameras and transition to Axon, NBC26 reported. The town was already evaluating Axon’s product, but repeated problems with Flock led officials to speed up the transition, the report said.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado dropped Flock for a nearly $22.8 million contract with Axon in July, the Denver Gazette reported. That deal included 100 Axon cameras, doubling the 50 Flock cameras the agency had, and first responder drones, the report said.

In December the City of Ferndale, Michigan, dumped Flock and approved a deal with Axon, according to a local government document. The document explained it was making the switch because “citing privacy concerns and failures by [Flock] to protect images stored on the city's ALPR network from unauthorized agencies […] Axon does not have a national look-up feature. Axon's ALPR data sharing software only operates on a one-to-one’ basis.” An 88-page report about the switch, however, shows that residents there are concerned about Axon’s ALPR cameras, too.

Longmont, Colorado, voted unanimously in March to approve a new deal with Axon, Times-Call reported. The purchase came after the city let its agreement with Flock lapse.

Knoxville, Texas, added a $9.4 million amendment to its existing contract with Axon, which included replacement ALPR cameras, according to a press release from the mayor. That purchase came after the city’s contract with Flock expired and the city was unable to secure a short-term extension.

As for why cities are switching, local cops performing lookups for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), data sharing, and Flock cameras sometimes being down or unavailable all came up in the media reports and documents.

Non-British citizens account for one in five student loans in the United Kingdom, according to new research.

The share of student loans going to non-citizens has risen from 10.2 percent to 19.3 percent. This means that the share of student loans going to non-citizens has roughly doubled over the past decade. Foreigners from the European Union (EU) represent a large portion of these non-citizens, especially Romanians, who account for one in 20. Foreign students were handed approximately £4 billion (~$5.4 billion) in tuition and maintenance loans overall. Foreign students are also 25 percent less likely to repay their loans compared to British students. This results in estimated annual losses for taxpayers ranging from £1.2 billion to £2.2 billion. Student Loans Company data shows that roughly 195,000 of the 239,000 foreign loan recipients hold settled status.

Coca-Cola is facing a new wave of backlash after viral videos appeared to show the company’s online personalization tool immediately rejecting positive Christian messages, while references to Allah, Satan, and even degrading attacks on Jesus advanced to the preview stage.

Conservative commentator Isabel Brown tested the customizer on camera after receiving a tip from a friend. In the video, phrases including “Allah is good,” “Muhammad is good,” and “Satan is good” appeared to generate can previews. But when Brown entered “Jesus is good,” the site returned a rejection message: “The name or phrase you’ve submitted is not permitted.”

The same immediate rejection appeared for “Virgin Mary,” “Jesus Christ,” “Holy Trinity,” “Holy Spirit,” “Jesus is God,” and “Christ is King,” according to the recording.

Then the test became even more disturbing.

I'm certainly no expert on pretty much anything, but safe to say the one thing most drivers don't expect to see at night is the sun in the sky. That's what one driver in Illinois claims they encountered recently and they have pictures to prove it.

This brand new report shared with the National UFO Reporting Center site happened near Streamwood, Illinois just after midnight on July 25, 2026

This eyewitness report said "It was moving slowly then stops, then moved again and stopped. Then moved again and then shot straight up and was gone…This was very weird it looked like a baby sun floating around.

The orange was glowing like it was on fire but it was not on fire. The color was like none I ever seen."

While this sounds highly unusual, this Illinois person shared 3 pictures which you can see here. If you're not familiar with Streamwood, Illinois, it's a part of the greater Chicagoland region.

Whenever there's a strange sky event near Chicago, you have to consider that O'Hare International Airport is a factor as it's a major hub of travel in the United States.

However, the pictures this Illinois person shared don't look like any type of conventional aircraft and the movement described doesn't seem to be a craft we're familiar with either.

Any time a flying object looks odd, you have to consider that atmospheric conditions played a role in affecting how it appears on the ground.

I am befuddled about what the object is in their pictures, though. By definition, that makes it an unidentified flying object.

Investigative reporter John Solomon from Just the News broke the news on Wednesday that Majority Leader John Thune and Senator Tom Cotton are blocking DOJ investigator Joe DiGenova from obtaining the transcripts of John Brennan’s interviews with the Senate Judiciary and Intelligence Committees.

This is holding up the investigation into Brennan and his role in the deep state coup to take down President Trump in 2016.

According to Solomon, the acting Attorney General Todd Blanche refuses to authorize a subpoena to the US Senate to obtain the documents.

Sperry later came out with a correction that the FBI says other “equities” in the intel chain are holding up the release of the documents.

Sperry added: “But bottom line, where is this massively important Russiagate document, and why hasn’t it been daylighted — still — after five (5) years?”

Israel Vetoes Trump in the Middle East—Again

The special relationship undermines American sovereignty.

If not for Israel’s veto power over U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, the Trump administration might have secured peace in Gaza, stabilized relations with Iran, and clinched a deal with Saudi Arabia to help build a nuclear program for the kingdom.

OK, that last “opportunity” deserved a hard pass, unless you reckon nuclear proliferation in the world’s most volatile region somehow serves U.S. interests. But in journalism, three makes a trend, so I’ve got myself a column.

And America has got itself a big problem: Israeli pushback on President Donald Trump’s efforts to build a better Middle East shows how our most entangling of alliances undermines U.S. sovereignty.

The Gaza example is the most recent. Washington has enabled Israel’s assault on Gaza, and Trump would now like to use his Board of Peace, which he oversees, to bring peace to the Palestinian enclave. That’s quite the task, and Israel, an ostensible client state of the U.S., isn’t making it any easier.

Last Thursday, Trump announced on social media that the Board had reached “a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza.” Trump added, “As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw.”

Sorry, Mr. President, but you’ve been reading fake news.

“Contrary to inaccurate reports,” the Board of Peace said in a statement this Monday, the Israeli military would withdraw forces only after Hamas handed over all its weapons.

That’s not what Trump had said, and it’s not what Hamas had understood the phased agreement to require. So, what happened? The Times of Israel reports:

The US-backed Board of Peace appeared to change its conditions for the IDF to withdraw from Gaza after its top officials held a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday, shortly before a fresh Israeli airstrike was reported in the enclave.

It’s déjà vu all over again. In late July, the Trump administration announced an agreement to develop a Saudi civilian nuclear program. But there was a catch. The very next day, Trump clarified on Truth Social that the deal “is totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords.”

By “Trump clarified,” I mean that he retroactively decreed a new stipulation apparently designed to kill a deal opposed by Israel. The chances in the near future of Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords—which normalize relations between Muslim nations and Israel—are approximately, checking my math, consulting my copy of Introduction to Statistical Concepts: not gonna freakin’ happen.

Again, the death of the U.S.–Saudi nuclear deal is a good thing, but it was brought about by a very bad thing, namely, Israel’s de facto veto power over Trump’s Middle East policy.

One Mideast nuclear agreement that actually would be good for American interests is the one with Iran that Trump was on the verge of securing in 2025. Early in his second term, Trump aimed to strike a deal that would deny Iran a pathway to the bomb. Statements by White House officials indicated Tehran could still be allowed to enrich uranium for civilian nuclear purposes.

But in spring 2025, something changed, and the Trump administration adopted the hardline position that Iran must commit to zero enrichment. That was a non-starter for Tehran, as the Islamic Republic had repeatedly declared.

Comments by Joe Kent, who resigned this March from a top counterterrorism position in the administration, shed light on what happened: Israel pressured the White House to move the goal posts. In an interview with The American Conservative, Kent recounted that Israel and its American supporters promoted the zero-enrichment demand to “break up the agreement” and set Trump on the path to a regime-change war.

I expect we’ll soon have a fourth “Israeli veto” example to sustain the trend, and this one might illustrate the fundamental problem best of all. In July, Trump said that he’ll consider selling America’s F-35 fighter jet to Turkey. Apparently, that’s not the kind of thing American presidents are allowed to do.

Harvard University astrophysicist Avi Loeb is casting doubt on a report from Ukrainian researchers who suggest the moon has a secret base for UFOs.

The group from the Main Astronomical Observatory near Kyiv say they reached their conclusion after analyzing high-speed photographs taken last summer.

The Ukrainian team says they observed two types of anomalies: “atmospheric” objects that were stationary and “continental” objects that appeared to move over the moon’s surface.

“UFOs are observed on Earth and in near-Earth space. We believe that the moon serves as a base for UFOs,” researchers said in their study.

Their work has not been peer-reviewed, but Loeb has some thoughts about their methodology. He said the team used a six-inch telescope to obtain their data, whereas a research project of this sort ideally would use multiple telescopes for comparison purposes.

“The problem with data from a small telescope on Earth is that lots of objects and atmospheric disturbances could pass in front of the moon during the observation period,” Loeb told “Jesse Weber Live” on Thursday.

Loeb also noted that NASA obtained new images of the moon during the recent Artemis II mission, with astronauts taking photographs of the lunar far side.

“Needless to say, they did not observe any evidence for lunar-based UFOs,” he said.

Loeb is head of the Galileo Project, which searches for signs of extraterrestrial life and technology, and leads an advisory panel of scientists advising the federal government on unexplained anomalous phenomena.

When it comes to the notion of private institutions and/or governments keeping alien vessels for reverse-engineering or “national safety” concerns, Borland cautions that it's not safe to assume everything is squarely on our terms.

Borland says an official from the Intelligence Community Inspector General's office "extremely hinted" that humans might not be fully in control, excuse the oxymoron.

Understandably, Borland says he is careful about what he says publicly while suggesting certain questions reveal what officials may know.

Rather than revealing what he was told, Borland says people who already know classified information often betray themselves through the questions they ask.

"You can tell somebody knows something based on the questions they ask you," he explained cryptically.

He illustrated this with a hypothetical exchange: instead of asking what an alleged witness saw, an informed official would ask, "Who do you think is running this show?"

Host Michels pointed to David Grusch as an example, noting his whistleblower complaint was officially deemed "urgent and credible," yet many of his claims remain unresolved publicly.

Last year, Grusch alleged the US government has operated a secret, decades-long program to recover and study crashed UFOs, hidden from Congress and the public.

He claimed the government possesses craft of "non-human origin" and that multiple defense contractors have been involved in attempting to reverse-engineer the technology.

Borland emphasizes that he, Grusch, and other whistleblowers are trying to establish a factual baseline without making sensational claims.

Scientists have designed a virtual model of an alien cell and dropped it onto a hypothetical exoplanet to see how it behaves, an approach that could help astronomers recognize signs of extraterrestrial life on distant worlds, according to a recent study published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The results revealed new insights about how microbes that produce methane gas, known as methanogens, might evolve on different exoplanets, such as Earth-sized ocean worlds or a class of hypothetical giant “Hycean planets” that host global oceans and hydrogen-rich atmospheres.

Predicting the impacts that methanogens might have on their environments could help scientists recognize potential signs of life, known as biosignatures, in the skies of worlds outside of our solar system.

Whereas many past studies have speculated about what forms of life might evolve on a particular type of exoplanet, this approach flips the idea on its head by starting with a general cell model and then considering how it might evolve in different biospheres.

“This is a kind of plausible life that's very unconstrained by Earth-based conditions,” said Arwen Nicholson, an astrophysicist at Exeter University who led the study, in a call with 404 Media.

“We can put it into different environments, and then see: What other effects does it have?”

The idea, she explained, is to simplify one aspect of the hugely complex search for alien life .

“This is a generalized idea of what biology would roughly do that we can then put in different places to try and start getting biosignature predictions ideally for different planets, or to understand what we're seeing from the telescopes,” said Nicholson.

It’s possible that the first lifeforms to emerge on Earth were methanogens that thrived some four billion years ago when our planet was far more depleted in oxygen.

These microbes still exist in a wide variety of ecological niches today. Unlike photosynthetic life, which requires sunlight for energy, methanogens can run on chemical energy in a process known as chemosynthesis.

As a result, methanogens are adaptable and provide a useful model for considering the emergence of life in a diverse array of habitats, including dark regions that receive no direct starlight.

“We do know that the Earth's early biosphere did have this big component of it that was producing methane and consuming methane,” Nicholson said.

“That gives us a starting point to look at other planets. It's a reaction we know works. It works on Earth, and it's something that is thought to work in environments that are very different to Earth.”

To that end, the team developed a baseline model of a spherical methanogen microbial cell and tinkered with different cell sizes, life cycles, and environmental effects that might evolve in various alien biospheres.

The results revealed a host of insights, including that a planet’s levels of hydrogen and methane are sensitive to the microbe’s particular features.

In this way, “life will act to ‘erase’ abiotic aspects of their environment” by transforming the composition of gasses in the atmosphere in ways that could be detectable to astronomers, according to the study.

The team also speculated that resource competition on alien worlds would likely favor methanogens that are smaller and longer-lived, which could outcompete similar species that are shorter-lived, larger, or require more energy.

But while these clues may help scientists spot likely biosignatures in the future, it will be a challenge to actually predict what sort of lifeform is producing those signals.

“You could have different life forms in your ocean and they would look the same in terms of a biosignature,” Nicholson said. “You could have a single film of some algae covering the whole ocean, or a little amoeba, or maybe something else.

I thought that was quite interesting. It almost frees us up from making too many assumptions of what alien life would look like, because how are we going to know?”

“We can use spherical microbes as a representation, but even if we found a biosignature, even if it all made sense, and we found life, we still wouldn't actually know what they look like,” she added.

Nicholson and her colleagues plan to continue this line of research by modeling simplified cells of photosynthetic life and predicting their impact on different exoplanet environments.

Ultimately, these studies will help scientists distinguish between genuine biosignatures and complex atmospheric chemistry that arises from geological activity.

It’s also worth preparing for the rather excruciating possibility that we find clear biosignatures on some farflung exoplanet and are never able to learn much more about them.

In science fiction, we are used to aliens showing up on Earth or sending us obviously artificial messages. But it’s more likely that we would discover gassy signs of life in a distant world’s skies and then have to accept that we might never learn its specific nature.

“We don't live in sci-fi,” said Nicholson. “Sci-fi is super cool. I love it too. But the reality is, we're looking at a habitable planet like our own. If we find anything, they will be life forms embedded in their world, just like we're embedded in our world.”

“It's a super exciting time to be in astrobiology again with all of this data, and it's super neat that people are so interested in it as well,” she concluded.

US Senate passes Lindsey Graham’s Russia sanctions bill

The legislation will give President Trump the power to apply 100% tariffs on countries buying Russian oil

he US Senate has approved a bill allowing President Donald Trump to impose 100% tariffs on the largest purchasers of Russian oil and gas. The bill was the brainchild of Senator Lindsey Graham, who tried multiple times to pass it before he died last month.

The bill, titled ‘The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026’, passed the Senate by 86 votes to 11 on Friday, with Graham’s sister Darline, who was appointed to his seat, reading out the result. Trump has already said he would sign the legislation, meaning it will become law if it passes the House of Representatives next week.

Senator Rand Paul was the only Republican to vote against the bill. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders and nine progressive Democrats, including former presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren, also voted against it.

The legislation empowers Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the top five purchasers of Russian oil and gas,a list that includes China and India. An earlier version of the bill would have increased these tariffs to 500% and applied them with or without Trump’s authorization.

Trump reportedly agreed to thefinal bill on the condition that he decide whether or not to impose the tariffs.

The bill was passed less than a month after Graham’s sudden death from heart disease. At a funeral service in Washington last week, Ukrainian leader VladimirZelensky met with more than 60 Senators and lobbied for the bill’s passage, urging them to hold a vote – and press Trump to send weapons to Kiev– “as quickly as possible, without unnecessary bureaucracy.”

Graham met with Zelensky ten times since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 and at the time of his death had just returned from touring weapons factories in Kiev.Graham repeatedly lobbied for maximum US military aid to Ukraine, suggested that the US shoot down Russian jets over Ukraine, and in March 2022, called for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Today, President Zelensky is watching from Ukraine, and Putin is watching from Moscow,” Senator Richard Blumenthal, who co-sponsored the bill, said after the vote. “I would like to think Lindsey Graham is watching too,” he added.

The bill also applies sanctions to Putin, senior Kremlin officials, Russian banks and business figures, and the Iranian energy and arms sectors. The sanctions are mostly symbolic, as almost all of Moscow and Tehran’s elites have already been sanctioned by the US.

The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), suggested and initially spearheaded by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, credited itself with billions of dollars in federal budget savings that could not be independently verified, a government watchdog said Thursday.

US President Donald Trump launched the now-defunct initiative shortly after he took office last January, tapping Musk as his government efficiency czar. The agency was billed as a sweeping effort to cut waste and bureaucracy across the federal government and its sprawling $7 trillion annual budget.

DOGE claims to have saved around $215 billion – just over 3% of the federal budget – through contract and lease cancellations, grant cuts, workforce reductions, regulatory changes and other actions.

However, billions of the roughly $110 billion in savings published on DOGE’s ‘Wall of Receipts’ were either “incorrect or lacked supporting evidence,” the US Government Accountability Office found.

DOGE provided insufficient information to verify 96% of the $49.2 billion it claimed to have saved from terminating nearly 16,000 grants, the watchdog reported.

Auditors also found that more than a third of the lease terminations credited to DOGE, worth around $15.3 million, were already being phased out before the initiative was established.

In one case, DOGE claimed $1.7 billion in savings from a Defense Health Agency IT contract covering more than 700 military treatment facilities. The contract, however, was never terminated or reduced, GAO wrote. “Thus, no savings were achieved,” it said.

DOGE officially shut down in July, following months of rumors that the initiative was quietly being dismantled and its functions absorbed elsewhere in the federal government.

Its final tally fell far short of Musk’s early promises. Before the start of Trump’s second term, the tech mogul claimed that DOGE could slash as much as $2 trillion from federal spending, later scaling back that target.

The aggressive campaign quickly became a political flashpoint as tens of thousands of federal workers lost their jobs and government programs were targeted for cuts. Musk also clashed with several senior officials in Trump’s cabinet before publicly feuding with the president over the Big Beautiful Bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination” and accusing it of exacerbating the ballooning US budget deficit.
