God bless our day, God rest the story of Kobe's passing so that we can return our attention to the Senate hearing scheduled for today, which is infinitely more important.

 

And honestly, Netflix is driving me crazy with it's programs that literally play out what we are discussing on these boards. Super creepy. Still trying to work out in my mind whether the producers and writers are trying to normalize these sick things or are living out their fantasies (or twisted realities) on the screen? It seems like a sick way to make a living - to portray such evil as entertainment. (I know that this goes across all entertainment platforms, not just Netflix). But honestly it's creepy as hell to see and hear some of the stuff on a TV show after literally reading it here first. I can't tell you how disconcerting that is.

He recounted for House investigators how he was so alarmed by the president’s request to enlist Ukraine to smear his political rivals, and similar efforts by Mr. Trump’s allies, that he reported them to his superiors β€” twice.

 

It was one of the more memorable turns in an inquiry that has been full of them. Colonel Vindman, who is fluent in Ukrainian, was the first White House official to testify who listened in on a July 25 call between Mr. Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. With his long rΓ©sumΓ© and military credentials, he immediately became a problem for Republicans.

 

Mr. Trump assailed him on Twitter, though not by name, branding him a β€œNever Trumper” without evidence. Conservative pundits and allies of the president questioned the colonel’s loyalty, insinuating he might be a spy for the country of his birth. But House Republicans, perhaps fearing a backlash, took pains to defend Colonel Vindman’s honor β€” even as they insisted he was wrong about Mr. Trump.

 

β€œHe’s a veteran, a combat veteran and he needs our respect and appreciation,” said Representative Tim Burchett, a freshman Republican from Tennessee who participated in Tuesday’s closed-door hearing, echoing the statements of leadership. β€œBut he also needs to be questioned.”

 

Inside the secure room, known as a SCIF, the atmosphere grew tense, as Republicans questioned Colonel Vindman about his private conversations in what Democrats viewed as an effort to discern the identity of the whistle-blower who prompted the inquiry. The colonel pushed back, participants said, making clear he was unwilling to share such information, especially when it involved members of the intelligence community.

 

But beyond the substance and the drama, Colonel Vindman offered a compelling immigrants’ tale and a glimpse into the story of twin brothers who have lived a singular American experience, one that was featured in a Ken Burns documentary when they were children. During his testimony, Alexander Vindman referred to him as β€œmy kid brother” β€” and insisted that lawmakers do the same, telling them with wry amusement that he was born six minutes earlier than Yevgeny was.

 

When Alexander Vindman decided to alert a White House lawyer to his concerns about Mr. Trump’s July telephone call with the Ukrainian president, he turned to his twin, bringing him along as he reported the conversation to John A. Eisenberg, the top National Security Council lawyer.

 

β€œHe was very honorable, very believable, very precise with his remarks,” said Representative Stephen F. Lynch, Democrat of Massachusetts. β€œHe seems to have followed every single procedural safeguard and has, as a lieutenant colonel, followed the chain of command in every respect.”

β€œGenya is always the smiling twin. Sanya is serious,” she wrote in the caption accompanying the image of them in their blue ball caps and short pants in 1980, the year after they arrived. A 1985 photograph of them with their grandmother on a boardwalk bench appeared in Mr. Burns’s documentary β€œThe Statue of Liberty.”

 

β€œWe came from Kiev,” they said almost in unison, in a clip on the filmmaker’s website. β€œOur mother died, so we went to Italy. Then we came here.”

 

When they were 13, Ms. Kitman captured the Vindman twins in matching red shirts. When Colonel Vindman married, she photographed him and his bride under a tallit, a Jewish prayer shawl, at their wedding.

 

The twins’ father, Semyon Vindman, went on to become an engineer, Ms. Kitman said, and the twins’ older brother entered the Reserve Officers Training Corps in college. She said the younger boys looked up to Leonid and decided to pursue their own military paths.

Documents reviewed by The New York Times suggest the reference is to Rudolph W. Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, and his efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and implicate Ukraine, rather than Russia, in interfering with the 2016 election.

 

He twice reported concerns about President Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, according to a draft statement.

 

In May, a month after Mr. Zelensky was elected president of Ukraine in a landslide victory, Mr. Trump asked the colonel to join the energy secretary, Rick Perry, to travel to Ukraine to attend the new president’s inauguration.

 

By July, Colonel Vindman had grown deeply concerned that administration officials were pressuring Mr. Zelensky to investigate Mr. Biden. That concern only intensified, he told investigators, when he listened in to the now-famous July 25 phone conversation between Mr. Zelensky and Mr. Trump.

 

β€œI did not think it was proper to demand that a foreign government investigate a U.S. citizen,” he told investigators, β€œand I was worried about the implications for the U.S. government’s support of Ukraine.”

 

His heritage gave Colonel Vindman, who is fluent in both Ukrainian and Russian, unique insight into Mr. Trump’s pressure campaign; on numerous occasions, Ukrainian officials sought him out for advice about how to deal with Mr. Giuliani.

US Air Force plane crashes in Afghanistan; Taliban claims they shot it down

 

A U.S. Air Force E-11 plane crashed in Afghanistan on Monday, and at least two pilots were discovered dead, according to reports.

 

Afghanistan government spokesperson Arif Noori confirmed the plane was flying between Kandahar province and Kabul when it went down in the Taliban-controlled Ghazni province south of Kabul, CBS News reported.

 

Noori added that two pilots were found dead in the wreckage.

 

A U.S. military official confirmed to CBS News only that the plane had crashed and was under investigation. The official did not comment on crew members aboard.

 

U.S. CENTCOM spokeswoman U.S. Army Maj. Beth Riordan also confirmed to the Associated Press that the plane had crashed and was under investigation.

Czech soldiers to join France’s counter-terror mission in Africa – govt

 

The Czech government on Monday approved a plan by its ministry of defense to deploy up to 60 troops as part of France’s counter-terrorism mission in Africa. The service members will join Operation Barkhane, France’s largest overseas military mission, AP reports.

 

It has been working to root out Islamic militants roaming the Sahel region. The government said Mali, Niger and Chad have all approved the Czech deployment.

 

However, the plan to deploy Czech forces in the mission until the end of 2022 needs parliamentary approval. The Czechs already have some 120 military personnel in Mali as a part of a European Union training mission.

The Sikorsky-76 helicopter that crashed Sunday, killing basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others was previously owned by the State of Illinois, according to online aircraft database Helis.

 

The helicopter was manufactured in 1991. Records show it was owned by the State of Illinois from 2007 until 2015 when then-Governor Bruce Rauner put the state’s fleet of aircraft up for sale in a cost-saving measure. While it was owned by the state, the luxury helicopter was used for what’s described as β€œVIP transport” of the governor and others.

 

When it flew Illinois governors, the helicopter carried the tail number N76ILL. An online database indicates the tail number was changed to N72EX in 2015 when it was purchased by the Island Express Holding Corporation of Van Nuys, California, the holding company of record at the time of the crash. Flight tracking websites show the helicopter received a new paint-job, including the Nike swoosh logo and Kobe Bryant’s signature β€œsheath” insignia after the 2015 ownership change.

 

In 2015, then-Gov. Bruce Rauner said the state received $2.5 million for selling 5 aircraft. The state’s online auction page indicates the helicopter sold for $515,000 and includes photos of the interior and exterior at the time. A spokesperson for Illinois’ Central Management Services, the state agency which handled the sale, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

 

An FAA database indicates the helicopter had a current airworthiness certificate issued in September 2015. Aircraft tracking site FlightRadar24.com shows the chopper’s final flight path.

The Taliban has claimed it shot down an American military plane in Afghanistan, killing everyone on board.

 

Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the militant group, said that high-ranking officers were among the dead after the aircraft was brought down in Dih Yak district around 1.10pm local time.

 

The US military has said it is investigating the crash but has not confirmed that the aircraft was American or given an estimate on the number of deaths.

 

Mujahid spoke out after footage was posted online by a Taliban-affiliated journalist appearing to show wreckage of the plane with a US Air Force symbol on the side.

 

A U.S. Air Force’s E-11A BACN (Battlefield Airborne Communications Node) crashed during the morning on Jan. 27, 2020 in Afghanistan. The mishap happened in the Taliban-controlled area in Dih Yak, Ghazni.

 

The aircraft crashed at 13:10 local time (08:40 UTC) in the Dih Yak District. Ghazni Province, Afghanistan. The crash site is 130 kilometres (70 nmi) southwest of Kabul and near the village of Sado Khelo. All the people on board were killed. It was originally reported to be an aircraft of Ariana Afghan Airlines, but the airline later ruled out this possibility, saying all its flights had been accounted for.

 

In the meantime, however, photos and videos emerged on social media showed the remains of what clearly seems to be E-11A BACN, serial 11-9358. The tail section and the engines seem to be pretty intact in the video, with recognizable USAF roundels on the engine and the serial code on the vertical stabilizer. The rest of the fuselage and the cockpit burned up following the crash.
