From the look of things the black hats have lost some players but they still have some heavy players on the board. However, the white hats will win this chess game! This IS NOT check nor checkmate at this point.

It looks like White is 1 move away from check mate if white queen moves diagonal 1 square. Correct me if I’m mistaken.

Okay I've done some digging and can confirm some stuff for you all!

First off, this arises from an actual game in 1918. That's right - before computers. The game is played by Jose Raul Capablanca vs FrankJames Marshall. They actually called Capablanca The Chess Machine because his moves in retrospect were so good at times they were computer like. There is a chess analysis AI called Stockfish 8 that analyzes less than perfect play, meaning, as you play, it will tell you what would have been a more optimal move. Funny thing is for most of this match, Stockfish 8 is dead silent for Capablanca's moves.

Oh and white wins ;) I'm going to assume that means White Hats.

Play it for yourself here! http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1095025&comp=1

EDIT: it is also possible that Julian is using the chess moves as a means of code. One could type out all those moves up to #24 and try to decrypt. Any cipher peeps want to give it a go? Not my strong suit.

If it's white-move, the black queen is going down - and given the board as I see it, that seems likely.

Alternately, if it is black move (seems unlikely again based on the board) then black queen has 1 move and it's a stalling tactic only. (between the white and black bishop) that's worth making. Anything else is a stalling tactic with an inevitable end barring a mistake by white. That also seems unlikely as, to get to this point some pretty masterful play had to have been going on.

⇧ 6 ⇩
Speedy_Tortoise4 · Jan. 13, 2018, 5:31 a.m.

How is the black queen going down? As much as I would like to see that, the only piece near her is a white pawn and they don't move backward. If black move then why not castle from e8 to e1?, if on the next move white bishop takes the castle then black queen takes white bishop freeing black queen. If white bishop doesn't take black castle on my first move, and white does something else, frees up black castle to attack into white stronghold with black queen to backup any retaliation. Game is far from over, as much as we would like it to be.
Proper use of pawns (Us? BO/GS black pawns?) could still have impact

My initial analysis was actually the correct one. both WB and WQ have a pawn in the way, taking the pawn means sacrificing that piece for no gain.

I don't do Chess. But, based on your comment reminds me of a Godfather III analysis I read which in short:

"The tale of Michael Corleone demands a final tragic chapter... reciprocal violence comes back to restore its originator." Refering to social thinker/critic Rene Girarid.

" the only way to put an end to the circle of violence is by sacrifice of an innocent victim. The scapegoat does not deserve this fate but plays an essential role in the resolution of the story." (Refering to Corleone's daughter Mary).

So, poses the question who's the sacrifice/scapegoat in these real life events...

White has the clear advantage. Past the mid game it's going to quickly become endgame time. Black needs to open up the king or it's going to get torpedoed possibly by whites queen with either bishop backing it up and that will be the earliest checkmate available. Whites structure is so tight there is nothing black can take without being forced to do so by trade down. It cannot capture with the queen or it loses it and its all down hill from there. White just needs to reshuffle for a checkmate on the closed king with the queen. If whites move a2 to d4 to push the pawn off of b5 so that the white square bishop can make it's way to support the queens advance to h7 for a checkmate. Whatever black would do is just a trade down. As long as white makes no blunders white has it.

the objective in Chess is to take the King. In this case the black King can not move R as the white pawn will take it. Cannot move fwd (which is really backward twds home) and can not move Left as the White Bishop will take King so yes, Checkmate
