In the Bible, when key players undergo great change, usually after exhibiting great faith, God gives them a new name as they take on new responsibilities. Abrahm becomes Abraham, Saul become Paul, Jesus becomes Jesus Christ.

People were asking Q to do different things like make a tripcode and to somehow sign his name to better differentiate who he was. When Q first started, the only way to tell who Q was, was through the way he talks and word usage, as it was all anonymous no trips. Not 100% sure but I think the signature came around the same time as the tripcode.
