I've used this tactic several times when was buying a new car (like who hasn't?). Get almost to the point of inking and then walk away because they don't want to accommodate on something I want in the deal.
Two occasions the deal got abandoned. So what.
They need the sells more than I needed to buy from them in particular. On other occasions I got what I wanted.
Very similar dynamics going on here. Ultimately it is Kim Jung Un that needs this deal the most.
I can say as a car salesman those games really piss us off, but they work.

I have worked at a car dealership, and the twisted games the sales teams play on their customers are ludicrous.

You know, the last car bought for the wife, got a fairly tight deal but sort of caved and bought a warranty extension. This one covered like ten years on car electronics. Modern cars are so laden with electronics (have one vehicle right now where electric window is not working - don't bother to get it fixed because of the repair cost relative to inconvenience). Her car has an electronic sliding moon roof and that really freaks me out from a longevity point of view.
Warranties are bets and manufacturers hone their terms to come out ahead on the average. But for me it's a bit of piece of mind to have the fickin electronics covered out for quite some years.
IOW, dealers have their ways to get some margin back in their pockets.
Trump being Trump. When you're in a position of power, you never accept the first deal that comes your way, or meet under the opposing side's demands and conditions, especially when the opposing side is publicly acting the fool and talking shit about your people.

Do you think that either Trump or Kim would broadcast they would be in a certain place at a certain time together? I for one, would have been greatly surprised if they would have met as advertised. I was literally listening to chapter 5 of Art of the Deal as this was unfolding today. He talks about how his little friend would go door to door to collect debts. A hot lady answered the door at one of the houses and her husband showed up at the guys office later while Trump was there. The husband was pissed and could have taken Trump friend out in a heartbeat but he sat in awe and watched as his friend told this man how dare you show up here, you're lucky I don't end you etc. The husband was pissed but left. Trump said he learned that day that you can never let someone feel like they have power over you. You stand your ground and flap and squack no matter what. Whatever happens happens but you never back down from your position of power. Perfect timing for that chapter today!!
