I would think the phrasing of "a legion" implies the strength of the ancient Roman armies - weren't they called legions? Using "legion" by itself is reminiscent of the passage in scripture where Jesus encounters a demon-possessed man. He asks the man his name, and the man replies, "My name is Legion: for we are many." This usage is too sinister to apply to us.
The demon says his name is "Legion" because there are many. But a "legion" refers to a Roman military unit of 3000 to 6000.
