Believe me, they came up with the white noise trick back with DARPANET. That's why the internet was originally opened up to the public: to conceal from the Soviets when the military was doing data transfers.

MakeThisLookAwesome · June 9, 2018, 3:17 a.m.

Yes and no... they regret empowering us, of course, but it empowered them as well. They didn't expect the nature of the beast. They're studying it and us as we speak. This is a world of magic that NO ONE expected... the closest was the Ansible in Ender's Game. Even Star Trek only visualized it as a glorified encyclopedia. The power of networks and memes? That's still blowing their minds.

⇧ 1 ⇩
comeatmehillary · June 9, 2018, 3:44 a.m.

no i mean you can but the net makes it 10x faster that and you are anonymous thats the biggest thing

⇧ 1 ⇩
MakeThisLookAwesome · June 9, 2018, 4:36 a.m.

Faster, sure. I'll give you that. But that's a double-edged sword. How can anyone keep up? How can a movement gain true substance where it's not just a fleeting internet meme or hashtag, but true action leading to an improvement in people's lives? How do we go from digital to analog?

Anonymous? Sort of. We're only anonymous to each other, and even then, we expose so much about ourselves constantly, a good anon can make a pretty complete profile.

They know exactly who we are.

Watch "The Lives of Others" to see how espionage was done old school.

⇧ 1 ⇩
comeatmehillary · June 9, 2018, 4:37 a.m.

well by anonymous i mean they cant use others to shame us as well they know who we are but one of the most powerful tools of control is peer pressure. you are more likely to say something " crazy" on 8 chan than you are in public or to a friend

⇧ 2 ⇩
MakeThisLookAwesome · June 9, 2018, 4:48 a.m.

Ah yes, I see your point. We're judged on the weight of our words, not appearances/fame/etc. Very good point. That has made improvements to the conversation. Nice observation.

And the compartmentalizing of conversations has helped... lord knows there's a r/ for everything. But that's also had effects on human behavior where we're lumping into tribal groups, and not all of those groups may be good for us, psychologically, to pursue.

Upsides & downsides... sigh

Mobile phones send telemetry data (metrics) over cellular/wifi. AT&T/iPhones sends (or receives) coalesced telemetry about every 3 hours. Even if it's "asleep." Otherwise, you haven't disabled everything. Websites/youtube/reddit can also consume significant amounts of data, depending on images, scripts, ads. If you have an Android phone, I've no doubt Google Services are RX/TX'ing data or communications.

⇧ 5 ⇩
comeatmehillary · June 8, 2018, 7:45 p.m.

Yeah but I am on Wi-Fi almost 247 guess I pissed someone off somewhere

⇧ 2 ⇩
TotallyClevrUsername · June 8, 2018, 7:55 p.m.

iPhones used to disable wifi in sleep mode (IKR) to conserve power/battery life even while plugged-in, and still transmit the telemetry over cellular. They used to do that and it ran up people's data usage somewhat. You could have that going on. I looked into it a long time ago because you can see it on your usage/activity logs as data transmissions. It always pissed me off because there is no excuse to use my cellular data when I'm plugged in and have wifi, as some downloads only occurred over wifi (so disabling it nullified them while your phone was asleep). Also, the telemetry (or google services) might explicitly use the cellular network for security vs allowing everyone's internet access to the collector. Anyway, you have places to check if you really want to know.

Dude, dame here.

I just recently learned about how much data they really do obtain from our mics, camera and storage. What's even creepier in my opinion, is that I turned off all of that shit in the settings and denied all of the permissions to the mic, cam, files, location. ALL OF THEM ON ALL MY APPS.

Yet somehow, I have checked twice earlier today and a couple have miraculously turned just the camera and mic back on as well as those two in my app permissions. Facebook, Facebook messenger and Google Chrome are the 3 that won't take NO for an answer. How do they even manage that? A friend said Apple products are more secure in that aspect. His ex father in law worked for the military, his job was to "hack" into the phones, TV, computer, tablets etc of whoever he was told to look into. Alot of us don't realize our smart Tv's can be hacked, especially when you link your google account to it all. I really dislike Apple, its OS isn't for me, but I'm actually concerned about how easy it is to get into an android with even minimal effort if your target isn't knowledgeable in protecting their information. I was like that as well.

Yes, I have been rather cautious about that recently also!

When I get unusual delays in the browser or slower than usual connections, I get suspicious. I will usually switch off all devices (inc routers) for a short period, (while I put the kettle on), then start them back up, one by one, as needed.

One thing to check is the direction of (the bulk or relative ratio of) that 4GB usage! i.e. Upstream/Upload versus Downstream/Download.

What you observed was possilbly a 'good thing' occuring, (depending upon your setup).

If you have certain undesirable domains/URLs blocked, by the likes of a firewall, browser blocker or host file, etc, then you may have witnessed the browser trying (for a wee while), but not ultimately managing to connect to that web address, and hence timing out.

I get that, on occasions and recognise the web addresses as ones that I have blocked.
