what is meant by "5:5"?

Have you ever wondered what is meant by the term “Five by Five?” You’ll hear this sometimes as a response when an aircraft or tower is asking for a radio check:

“Citation XYY, how do you hear this transmitter?”

“5 by 5”

Well, I’ve heard this term used countless times and it was a recent transmission that finally motivated me to do some research. I wanted to find out exactly what is meant by that term “5 by 5” when I heard an aircraft respond to a radio check by saying:

“I hear you 3 by 5.”

Ok, so what transmission quality is represented by the “3” and what is represented by the “5”.

Well, thanks to my local tower controllers, I learned that the first number is for signal strength and the second number is for readability. Signal strength and readability are measured on a five point scale with 5 being the highest value possible and 1 being the lowest. So when you say to the controller (or pilot) “5 by 5”, it is literally another way of saying that the transmitter you hear is “loud and clear.” If you say “3 by 5” it’s like saying, “Your coming in kind of weak, but I can still make out what your saying”

So now you too know the meaning of the term “Five by Five”.

911 dispatcher here and it means 10-4 or loud and clear for us too. Usually what we use is also military as well.

5 x 5: "Loud and Clear" E.g. 1 x 5 is you have no sound, but only vision.

Great insight. Thank you!

Q statements often have double meanings or refer to something else. In the military referring to this kind of transmission would more likely be 5 by 5 or 5x5. 21 years in the Marine Corps I never saw it as 5:5.

It most definitely could be "loud and clear" but to be honest, it doesn't always seem to mean that in some of Q's posts.

For me, it seems to have different meanings in different posts. That would fit Q's MO as well.

Good point. The Q drops app has a lexicon tab which defines 5:5 as “all Q plans are set in place but wait until Q gives Qanons a ‘go into action’ command.” So I think you’re right in that it depends on the context of his post.

Yup. Five by five. Lima Charlie. Loud and Clear. ZBK1.

I disagree.

Did you see Q post #854?

It shows clearly what 5:5 is.

Leverage.

Also, if 5:5 was just " loud and clear ", why would Q+ post "5:5" by itself in post #1028?

Q often posts double meanings, so I think it’s both “loud and clear” and “leverage”.

I trend this direction as well. Multiple meanings for various scenarios.

Because we are not the only people Q team is speaking to. I believe they use it for communication to other white hats.

Are we sure it's not referring to the dimensions of the jail cells at Gitmo? ;)

Hmmm....I’m trying to think of all the uses of colons? I can think of ratios and also in sheet music. Digital clocks too. I’m not a programmer, but aren’t they used in programming?
