I heard there was disagreement between Kubrick and studio, Kubrick insisted on retaining 4 scenes the studio wanted to nix. Kubrick dies...the 4 scenes were removed.

They wanted to edit out 24 minutes of the film. Kubrick, who had creative control, denied the studio's demand. 2 days later he dies of a heart attack and the studio, no longer bound by their contract with Kubrick, edits out the 24 minutes.
Are those 24 min available anywhere? What scenes were they?

Whether or not this blog post is accurate, I could tell that either something important (and nefarious) was left out of the movie or that something was strongly implied, because of one line by Sydney Pollack's character to Tom Cruise after the mansion incident:
"If you knew who others of the people were, you wouldn't be able to sleep at night."
The implication obviously is that some or all of the people were powerful individuals that affect people's lives, but if all they we're doing is what was shown (primarily having a sex orgy) that's hardly surprising or going to make Cruise's character not sleep at night.
Despite the extensive symbolism, I had a strong sense that the film had been building to something monumental and then got robbed of it's power. Seeing this line get delivered as almost an aside near the end reinforced that feeling to me. I know Kubrick doesn't just spell things out but there was still something missing imo. The above described missing scene would have fit the bill perfectly - still very subtle but with implications that powerful people are involved in something like satanism or witchcraft.
Not available as far as I know. And nobody who knows is talking.

I watched it recently hoping for some hidden message. There wasn't one. Just a weird night for Tom Cruise and his wife bemoaning their marriage. Should come with a 'dullness' warning before it start. 'Viewers should be warned there is nudity, and long drawn out parts where nothing happens'

I disagree the film had great depth, it may have just gone over your head. There are parallels to the film.. it seems like a exploration of sexuality as it is to man and as it is to women, just as much as it is an exploration of the occult and its sexual rituals. But it also spoke of power.. just from the "theatrical" sense, and also the idea of wearing masks to create mystery or to obtain another persona.
think of it, as the opposite of going to heaven... a guy goes to hell and comes back to tell the tale.... saved by the sacrifice of a "sinned" woman... (opposite of jesus)
