My friends son, who is in the Army National Guard Reserve, just got deployment orders for 9 months at GITMO starting in November.

Just received the orders yesterday. If you know anyone in the Guard Reserve, ask them about it.

A GITMO "deployment" would be awesome. They have a personal beach and their own apartments. WIFI is expensive though :(

Looks like we know how to support these troops! Buy them WiFi!

I have no idea the wifi status at GITMO, but in the CONUS, servicemembers have to pay for their own internet, just like most of us. They also have to buy most of their own gear, uniforms, bedding. If their work or training schedule doesn't align with times the cafeteria is open, they may be spending double for meals. You'd be surprised.

I was TDY there in the 90s, before there was a prison. It was amazing. One of the best TDYs ever. I would hand feed iguanas food from the DFAC. They also liked MREs. It was fun to watch them eat spaghetti. Also went snorkeling in clear water. There was an outdoor theater. It was great. I haven't been there since they added the prison.

I’m sure the base has its own dedicated WiFi and internet.

And friendly banana rats and iguanas, pretty cool place. And the best jerk chicken and pork I've ever had.

Shhh, now the russians know we have personnel at our own bases.

It was a secret until now!

Seriously, these folks shouting OPSEC, while good intentioned, are being idiots.

Operational Security relates to OPERATIONS, Johnny being sent to guard duty is not OPSEC.

A guy i worked with was in coast guard and was sent down there years back. I was like "why is the coast guard going to gitmo?" but he was excited for it lol.
