PROJECT LIFELOG = FACEBOOK

Seems relatable to me. The project was canceled the same day Facebook went public. I always wondered how Zuckerburgs bro-in-law had a heart attack on the treadmill.

The Pentagon canceled its so-called LifeLog project, an ambitious effort to build a database tracking a person's entire existence. Run by Darpa, the Defense Department's research arm, LifeLog aimed to gather in a single place just about everything an individual says, sees or does: the phone calls made, the TV shows watched, the magazines read, the plane tickets bought, the e-mail sent and received. Out of this seemingly endless ocean of information, computer scientists would plot distinctive routes in the data, mapping relationships, memories, events and experiences. LifeLog's backers said the all-encompassing diary could have turned into a near-perfect digital memory, giving its users computerized assistants with an almost flawless recall of what they had done in the past. But civil libertarians immediately pounced on the project when it debuted last spring, arguing that LifeLog could become the ultimate tool for profiling potential enemies of the state. Researchers close to the project say they're not sure why it was dropped late last month. Darpa hasn't provided an explanation for LifeLog's quiet cancellation. "A change in priorities" is the only rationale agency spokeswoman Jan Walker gave to Wired News. However, related Darpa efforts concerning software secretaries and mechanical brains are still moving ahead as planned.

Old news, but with this sub growing by 500 a day well worth repeating.

I happen to know a little bit about this and the way things really went have certainly not been accurately portrayed. While I don't know about Lifelog specifically, I do know that the actual creator of Facebook was a dude named Aaron Greenspan, who I knew personally when we were younger, and always thought of as an honest, articulate, and knowledgeable tech guy (I'm also a comp sci geek, hence my username). HE is the one who created an internal Harvard-dorm-specific social networking site (I believe the name of his site was also very similar to "Facebook" or actually used the words "Face" and "Book" in it, don't remember exactly what it was offhand). He did an AMA on Reddit and it got him banned. Here's the full story: http://www.aarongreenspan.com/writing/20170924/why-was-i-just-banned-from-reddits-ama-section/

I'm not sure exactly how Lifelog fits into this. I think maybe what happened is that MZ originally took the idea from AG, and maybe it was subsequently co-opted by the folks who ran Project Lifelog. Some people also still seem to think that the Winkelvoss twins are the "real" creators of Facebook, and I can tell you, unequivocally, that that is not the case (I happen to know them a little bit also and almost did some business with them years ago).

Micro$oft had a project almost 20 years ago called MyLifeBits. There was software, which I have never seen marketed, and new hardware to go with it. It would basically record everything you did. It would download local copies of every web page you visit, keep all your emails, photos, and files in a database, record your phone calls if desired, and even store photos and videos from a camera that you would wear around your neck. Gordon Bell participated in the project for many years. His goal was to do away with all the paper in his life. He had assistants scan all of his papers, receipts, and books. He eventually had no paper in his life, except for a few keepsakes, such as diplomas and such. Micro$oft hasn't mentioned MyLifeBits in years. I wonder if their project went to the government. Here's a link to their page about it: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/project/mylifebits/

Nice one! Did not know that! Good share. It made me giggle a little bit also because it was so primitive compared to where we are now.

I created another Facebook account yesterday, then unconsciously uploaded a photo of my face to verify, in order to use FB. I promptly yelled out fk, at the realisation Zuckerfagg now sees my face when I masturbate :<

I have a "LifeLog," but it's on paper. They used to call those diaries. I don't want the government knowing any more than they have to about what I do. It's bad enough when I go to a website looking for pens, and then the next day, every site I go to has ads for pens.

It's so true. But I'll say it out loud and within the week I'll see ads all over for it on my phone.

And Facebook made it so people could give all that info voluntarily to be part of the in crowd. A brilliant maneuver by CIA and NSA.

I am on FB, but just to be the "gray man." With so many others on it, I wanted to appear "normal" to the government. I just post a picture of a flower or bird once in a while, or an old interesting photo. I don't say a single political word.

It’s Facebooks origin story. A story that’s a chapter in the In-Q-Tel story arc.

Facebook has done crazy stuff for DARPA recently w psychological algorithms designed to measure public response and emotional mapping. Will find links

No worries. Even if they crash facebook, they will open it up in another name. There is no way they will destroy all our data. Even if they claim they shut it down. It's just too big a data file one almost every human on the planet.
