Wells Fargo Ex-CEO Settles SEC Claims, Former Community Bank Head Faces Fraud Case

Former Wells Fargo & Co. chief government John Stumpf agreed Friday to pay $2.5 million to settle civil claims over his role in the bank’s fake accounts scandal, whereas regulators sued one other former Wells government over fraud allegations.

U.S. says it is open to extending G20 debt framework to other countries

The United States is open to extending a joint framework for debt treatment agreed Friday by G20 finance officials for the world’s poorest countries to include middle-income countries and small island states, a senior U.S. Treasury official said.

However, that view is not shared by all members of the Group of 20 major economies at this stage, the official said. “We’re very open to extending this to other countries,” the official told reporters. “It’s a framework that, in our view, could apply to low-income countries, as well as middle-income countries, small island states.” G20 countries on Friday agreed for the first time on a common framework for restructuring the government debts given that the COVID-19 pandemic is exacerbating the problems of poor countries that were already facing crushing debt levels before the outbreak.

The World Bank, International Monetary Fund and finance ministers from many middle-income countries have argued the G20’s debt relief initiative must be extended to include countries that are not currently eligible. The U.S. endorsement marks a substantial step forward in that push. The senior U.S. official called the common framework a historic achievement that brought creditors such as China, India and Turkey into a coordinated debt restructuring process, along with the Paris Club of official bilateral creditors. But he said the United States would be monitoring its implementation carefully, with a big focus on China, which has sharply increased lending in the past 20 years. Estimates of total Chinese lending ranged from $350 billion to upwards of $1 trillion, the official said.

“We certainly will be monitoring closely exactly how it works in practice, and with a particular eye on Chinese participation,” the official said. “It’s really the lack of transparency on Chinese debt that allows them to, in some cases, game the system and avoid full participation.”

Bush, made the comment during the conservative Federalist Society’s annual convention, held virtually this year because of the virus pandemic. “The pandemic has resulted in previously unimaginable restrictions on individual liberty,” Alito also said, according to the Associated Press. Alito made clear that his expressed views were not intent on “diminishing the severity of the virus’ threat to public health” or question “whether any of these restrictions represent good public policy.”

However, he argued that it is an “indisputable statement of fact” that “we have never before seen restrictions as severe, extensive and prolonged as those experienced for most of 2020.” “Whatever one may think about the COVID restrictions, we surely don’t want them to become a recurring feature after the pandemic has passed,” Alito continued. He was particularly critical of two cases earlier this year in which the high court sided with states, that imposed restrictions on the size of religious gatherings, citing the pandemic. In both cases – in California and Nevada – the court divided 5-4 in allowing those restrictions to continue with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the court’s liberals.

Coronavirus cases in Japan hit new highs

A record 1,705 new coronavirus cases were reported in Japan on Friday, surpassing the previous high set on Thursday. The prime minister is calling for renewed vigilance. Experts say the country is experiencing a third wave of infections. In total, there have been more than 116,000 since the outbreak began. Nearly 1,900 people have died.

Tokyo remains the largest hot spot. New cases in the capital have surpassed 300 for three straight days. Medical workers are concerned about the rising number of patients. Doctors at a Tokyo hospital accepting the seriously ill say they're reaching capacity.

One said, "It may be necessary to increase the number of beds because they have been almost full since last week." The northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido is another hot spot. More than 200 new cases were reported on Friday. Multiple clusters have been detected in a nightlife district in Sapporo. Authorities are asking restaurants and bars in the area to shorten their business hours.

Hokkaido Governor Suzuki Naomichi said, "The situation is still very severe as we try to strike a balance between social and economic activities and preventing infections from spreading."

Also on Friday, officials said more than 130 people who made use of a domestic travel campaign launched by the central government had tested positive for the virus. The campaign aims to boost the tourism industry, which has been hit hard by the pandemic. But questions are being raised about whether it should continue. Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide said, "I acknowledge that experts also have the view that there is no need to declare a state of emergency or review the travel campaign at the moment."

Suga is urging people to take basic anti-infection measures, especially in risky situations, such as group meals.

2018 to now Georgia Senate Candidate Jon Ossoff Quietly Discloses Financial Ties to Pro-CCP Hong Kong Media Company

Georgia Democrat and Senate candidate Jon Ossoff has been compensated by a Hong Kong media conglomerate whose owner has spoken out against pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, according to his most recent financial disclosure.

Ossoff, whose role as CEO of a London-based producer of investigative documentaries has drawn scrutiny over the years, reported in an amended financial statement that he has received at least $5,000 from PCCW Media Limited over the last two years — a detail that has previously gone unreported. Ossoff did not disclose his ties to PCCW in his initial financial report, which he filed in May.

PCCW, the largest telecom agency in Hong Kong, is run by Chairman Richard Li, son of Hong Kong’s richest man, Li Ka-shing. Li also serves as a councilor for the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington, D.C., think tank. But for years, Li has spoken out against Hong Kong independence and the pro-democracy protests that have rocked the island as the Chinese Communist Party has consolidated control.

An Ossoff campaign spokesperson told National Review that the payments stemmed from the airing of “two investigations produced by Jon’s company of ISIS war crimes against women and girls,” representing “one of dozens of TV stations and distributors in more than 30 countries that have aired Jon’s work.”

“Jon strongly supports Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement and condemns the brutality and authoritarianism of the Chinese Communist Party,” the spokesperson added, after a National Review analysis of Ossoff’s public comments showed that the candidate has been silent on the situation in Hong Kong. Ossoff’s campaign declined to comment on whether he condemns Li’s opposition to the island’s pro-democracy movement.

In 2016, Li released a public statement asserting that he was “staunchly opposed to the independence of Hong Kong,” after a mainland Chinese media outlet reported that his company was backing pro-democracy singer Denise Ho Wan-see, prompting calls to boycott his companies from Chinese nationalists.

“Mr. Richard Li and MOOV would like to clearly state that the company and Mr. Li respect freedom of expression,” the statement read. “However, both Mr. Li and the Company are staunchly opposed to the independence of Hong Kong and it is their view that the independence of Hong Kong would not be feasible, and discussing Hong Kong’s independence is a waste of society’s resources.”

As protests reached a fever pitch in 2019, Li moved to take out full-page advertisements in seven newspapers to call for the restoration of “the social order with the rule of law,” backing the recommendations of Beijing’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council.

While Li reaffirmed the “One Country, Two Systems” principle that has governed Hong Kong since 1997, he has been silent since the Chinese Communist Party acted unilaterally to pass a sweeping new national security law in June, which Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said makes Hong Kong no longer an “autonomous” entity.

Li’s father Li Ka-shing has publicly backed the law, saying the Hong Kong people “need not over-hypothesise it,” even as Beijing has cracked down on its critics and dissenters. And when asked by Vulture what the law would mean for potential media censorship, a PCCW spokesperson said that “PCCW Media will operate its businesses in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations.”

PCCW’s payments to Ossoff are not the only source of controversy in the amended report. In July, the Washington Free Beacon revealed that, based on the same disclosure, Ossoff has been compensated financially by the Qatari-backed news agency Al Jazeera over the past two years. Ossoff was heavily criticized for similar ties to Al Jazeera during his failed run for Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District in 2017.

‘Second Soviet Union’ – Hungary’s Orban rips into EU’s plans to make access to Brussels funds conditional

Hungary’s prime minister has labeled the EU’s plan to make access to funding conditional on the maintenance of the rule of law as “blackmail.” He then likened Brussels to the Soviet Union.

Viktor Orban, the Hungarian PM, told state radio on Friday that his country cannot accept EU plans to link access to European funds with the rule of law criteria.

On November 5, European leaders agreed that the next seven-year budget cycle would be conditional on the rule of law. Meaning that if the budget as a whole is accepted by a member state, the EU will be able to cut funding to governments that don’t respect the rule of law.

The PM said that he spoke to German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday and reaffirmed his objections to the plan.

He told Merkel that if this regulation, tabled by the European Parliament and the German presidency, is passed, “then we have made Soviet Union out of the EU.”

This is not what we wanted … we did not create the EU for having a second Soviet Union.

Orban supplemented his remarks by saying it was customary for the Soviet Union to subjectively impose conditions to punish republics and communist governments.

In the old days, in the communist world, all this was called anti-Soviet activity, and now they want to punish Member States by referring to it as anti-European activity.

Stopping short of threatening to veto the budget, Orban said draft proposals were “without objective criteria … they want to blackmail countries on an ideological basis.”

Hungary is supported by Poland’s PM Mateusz Morawiecki in its opposition to the EU’s draft regulation.

On Thursday, Morawiecki said that he had written to EU leaders to tell them that Poland could not accept the proposals.

“Discretionary mechanisms, based on arbitrary, politically motivated criteria, cannot be accepted because they do not take into account the essential, substantive aspects of European law,” he wrote on Facebook.

CNN International anchor Christiane Amanpour compared President Donald Trump's four years in office to the Nazis' Kristallnacht. After Amanpour made the comparison of President Trump's first term to the campaign of terror against Jewish people in 1938, the CNN International segment from Thursday was characterized as "despicable" and "disgusting."

"This week 82 years ago, Kristallnacht happened," Amanpour said on her interview TV show. "It was the Nazis' warning shot across the bow of our human civilization that led to genocide against a whole identity and, in that tower of burning books, it led to an attack on fact, knowledge, history and truth.

Kristallnacht, the "Night of Broken Glass," was the two-day onslaught on Jews in Germany that began on the night of Nov. 9, 1938. "Over 250 synagogues were burned, over 7,000 Jewish businesses were trashed and looted, dozens of Jewish people were killed, and Jewish cemeteries, hospitals, schools, and homes were looted while police and fire brigades stood by," according to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

"The morning after the pogroms 30,000 German Jewish men were arrested for the 'crime' of being Jewish and sent to concentration camps, where hundreds of them perished. Some Jewish women were also arrested and sent to local jails. Businesses owned by Jews were not allowed to reopen unless they were managed by non-Jews. There was a wave of backlash against Amanpour on Twitter.

Capital that reportedly own or have investments in election technology vendors responsible for developing, manufacturing, and maintaining the vast majority of voting machines and software in the United States. In their letters, the lawmakers raise concerns about vulnerabilities and a lack of transparency in the election technology industry and the poor condition of voting machines and other election technology equipment. They request information about the role private equity investment in these companies have played in creating and perpetuating these conditions.

Election security experts have noted for years that our nation's election systems and infrastructure are under serious threat, but voting machines reportedly continue to fail and breakdown across the country, as vendors fail to innovate, improve, and protect voting systems, putting U.S. elections at avoidable and increased risk.

The three vendors Election Systems & Software, Dominion Voting Systems, and Hart InterCivic collectively distribute voting machines and software that facilitate voting for over 90% of all eligible voters in the United States. Private equity firms reportedly own or control each of these vendors, which "have long skimped on security in favor of convenience," leaving voting systems across the country "prone to security problems."

Look in the "C:\path\to\project\NotCastImages" folder on all the ICC hardware for ambiguous ballots. Arizona had a lot of issues with sharpie markers. The ICC hardware might have marked such ballots as ambiguous.
