Scientists have taught spinach to send emails

 

It may sound like something out of a futuristic science fiction film, but scientists have managed to engineer spinach plants which are capable of sending emails.

 

Through nanotechnology, engineers at MIT in the US have transformed spinach into sensors capable of detecting explosive materials. These plants are then able to wirelessly relay this information back to the scientists.

 

When the spinach roots detect the presence of nitroaromatics in groundwater, a compound often found in explosives like landmines, the carbon nanotubes within the plant leaves emit a signal. This signal is then read by an infrared camera, sending an email alert to the scientists.

If they can do this to spinach, imagine what they can do w/a vaccine. What happens to the poor SOB that might eat this spinach? Maybe I've been on the boards for too long, but this sounds like a food chain test run for something much much worse.

London to Resume Trading Swiss Shares After Losing EU Billions

 

The City of London can tout a rare benefit of Brexit this week, when Swiss shares such as Novartis AG and Nestle SA are expected to be readmitted to trading in London. The return comes after an 18-month hiatus triggered by Switzerland protecting its markets in a stand-off with the European Union. The U.K. is looking to embrace other partners after jettisoning ties with the world’s biggest trading bloc.

 

The swift reintroduction reflects political and economic imperatives, with the U.K. government under pressure to show tangible benefits of a departure that’s been dominated by a steady flow of news around the gradual diminution of the City of London as a financial center. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak met with his Swiss counterpart last week to hasten the deepening of financial services ties in the wake of Brexit. “This will be an interesting development,” said Robert Barnes, head of LSE’s Turquoise venue. “The extraordinarily quick move towards equivalence between Switzerland and U.K. sends a positive message to the world, promoting the growth of capital markets.”

 

London Stock Exchange Group Plc, Cboe Europe and Nomura Holdings Inc. are among the companies planning to restart Swiss trading in the U.K. capital.

 

Still, it’s hardly a like-for-like swap. Before Switzerland lost equivalence from the EU, London averaged 1.3 billion euros ($1.6 billion) in Swiss share trades per day. This compares with 6.3 billion euros of EU share trading that left London overnight after Jan. 1. In 2018, U.K. financial services exports to Switzerland, excluding the insurance and pension fund industry, was 2.5 billion pounds, compared to 21.2 billion pounds to the EU, according to the Office for National Statistics.

 

“It’s a little bit of a pyrrhic victory,” given what London has lost, said Niki Beattie, founder at Market Structure Partners. Allying with Switzerland may also risk further alienating the EU. It underlines the U.K.’s divergence from the bloc, a shift unlikely to boost the City of London’s bid to be granted untrammeled market access for financial services. The Swiss experience highlights the fraught nature of equivalence negotiations with Europe.

 

Switzerland is no further along the road to winning Brussels’ seal of approval 18 months after the EU withdrew its equivalence stamp. Switzerland retaliated by banning trading in about 200 Swiss shares on venues inside the 27-nation bloc. If the EU were to grant the U.K. equivalence, one condition might be the U.K. rescinding its Swiss decision, according to Beattie. For now, the return of Swiss trading is an emblem of the trade-offs inherent to Brexit.

 

“Whereas the loss of EU share trading was an own goal for the U.K. this is more of a free kick, definitely not a goal,” said Alasdair Haynes, chief executive officer at Aquis Exchange.

NYSE's biggest decliners are led by GameStop, AMC and Express

 

The stocks leading the NYSE's biggest losers list early Tuesday were those heavily shorted ones that were pulling back from their recent rocket rides. Shares of GameStop Corp. GME, -51.02% were the biggest decliners, shedding 49.3% in morning trading, after sliding 30.8% on Monday. The stock has now lost 67.1% since closing at a record $347.51 on Jan. 27, but has still rocketed 961.4% over the past three months. The second and third biggest NYSE losers were shares of AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. AMC, -40.90%, down 39.5%, and Express Inc. EXPR, -32.16%, down 32.3%. On the Nasdaq exchange, the biggest decliner was Koss Corp.'s stock KOSS, -42.57%, which tumbled 43.7%. The pullbacks in these stocks comes in the face of a broader market rally, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, 1.60% surging 351 points, or 1.2%.

The House impeachment managers argue former President Donald Trump should be convicted for inciting the insurrection at the Capitol last month and barred from holding future office, charging that his actions "threatened the constitutional system that protects the fundamental freedoms we cherish."

 

The House managers laid out their case against Trump in a pre-trial legal brief filed Tuesday morning, in which they accused Trump of stirring up violence against Congress in an attempt to upend the peaceful transfer of power. They also provided a constitutional defense for holding an impeachment trial of a former president.

 

"President Trump's responsibility for the events of January 6 is unmistakable," the House impeachment team wrote. "President Trump's effort to extend his grip on power by fomenting violence against Congress was a profound violation of the oath he swore. If provoking an insurrectionary riot against a Joint Session of Congress after losing an election is not an impeachable offense, it is hard to imagine what would be."

 

The House's brief is the first of several legal filings ahead of the start of the trial on February 9. Trump's response to the trial summons, in which he is expected to argue that the trial is unconstitutional, is due at 12 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

 

The legal briefings will provide the backdrop for a case in which the House impeachment managers face a skeptical Senate Republican conference. Last week, 45 of the 50 GOP senators voted to support dismissing the trial on constitutional grounds, a sign that the 67 votes required for conviction are unlikely to materialize.

 

In their brief Tuesday, the House managers pushed back on the Republican claims, arguing that there is ample history and precedent to hold a trial for Trump.

 

"There is no 'January Exception' to impeachment or any other provision of the Constitution," the managers wrote. "A president must answer comprehensively for his conduct in office from his first day in office through his last."

 

House Democrats noted that Trump was impeached while he still was president, pushing back on Senate Republican arguments that Congress cannot impeach a former official. Still, they argued there's precedent for impeaching former officials, too, as there have been a handful of cases in US history.

 

The House's impeachment brief also made the case for the Senate to bar Trump from holding future office. If the Senate convicts Trump, which requires a two-thirds majority, it can also hold a vote to prevent him from holding office again.

 

"Constitutional history, text, and structure, as well as prior Congressional practice, all confirm that the Senate has jurisdiction to try President Trump," the managers wrote. "So does common sense. While sworn to faithfully execute the laws — and to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution — President Trump incited insurrection against the United States government. His conduct endangered the life of every single Member of Congress, jeopardized the peaceful transition of power and line of succession, and compromised our national security."

Top U.S. oil producer Exxon Mobil on Tuesday posted its first annual loss as a public company as the COVID-19 pandemic hammered energy prices and it reduced the value of its shale gas properties by more than $20 billion in the fourth quarter.

 

Exxon cut up to 15% of its workforce and delayed oil and gas projects after accepting oil prices could remain below $60 a barrel for years. It added $22 billion to its debt last year to cover its dividend and project spending. The company reported a net annual loss of $22.44 billion for 2020, compared with a full-year profit of $14.34 billion in 2019.

 

Exxon posted four straight quarters of losses in 2020 and is under fire from activist investors pushing for board changes and a better strategy for a global transition to cleaner fuels. On Tuesday it named former Petronas President Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin to its board of directors, and said it was in discussions with other candidates. Other oil majors are also under pressure as pandemic-related travel restrictions cloud fuel demand and spur cost-cutting at energy firms.

 

Rival BP plunged to its first annual loss in a decade on Tuesday while Chevron on Friday fell to the first annual loss since 2016. Royal Dutch Shell reports financial results Thursday and Total SA reports next week.

Alexey Navalny jailed for 2.5 years after Moscow Court says he violated terms of suspended sentence in 'Yves Rocher' fraud cases

 

Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny will serve two-and-a-half years in prison after being found guilty of breaking the terms of a suspended sentence, handed down for an embezzlement case in 2014.

 

On Tuesday, Moscow City Court ruled that Navalny had failed to regularly report to the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN), and his excuse for non-appearance was deemed insufficient. Therefore, the judge decided that the suspended judgment should be converted into a real one.

 

The anti-corruption activist was originally sentenced in 2014 to three-and-a-half years, but has already served 12 months under house arrest.

 

In 2014, Navalny was found guilty of embezzling 30 million rubles ($400,000) from two companies, including the French cosmetics brand Yves Rocher, in a case he claims was politically motivated. The judgment was also condemned by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which called the conviction "arbitrary and manifestly unreasonable." He received a sentence suspended for five years, which was later extended by another year. It was due to expire on December 30 last year. However, a couple of days before it ended, Navalny was summoned by the FSIN. He didn't turn up, as he wasn't in the country, and was therefore declared a wanted person.

 

At the time, Navalny was in Germany, convalescing from an alleged poisoning in Siberia last August. However, a report published by Berlin doctors in December showed that he had recovered, and therefore, according to the FSIN, he technically should have been able to attend.

 

Prior to the beginning of the case, media reported a large police presence around the court building, with several arrests being made. Nearby streets were blocked off.

Trump Lawyer: Impeachment Is "Political Weaponization" Of A Constitutional Process

 

David Schoen, one of former President Donald Trump’s newly appointed impeachment defense attorneys, said he believes that Democrats are using the impeachment process as a “weapon” to go after Trump in an attempt to bar him from running for office again.

 

“This is the political weaponization of the impeachment process,” Schoen told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Monday.

 

“I think it’s also the most ill-advised legislative action that I’ve seen in my lifetime. It is tearing the country apart at a time when we don’t need anything like that.”

 

Democrat lawmakers have been calling for Trump’s impeachment since the beginning of his term, Schoen said, and the upcoming trial is their latest attempt to target him, as well as to carry out their agenda of preventing him from ever running for president again.

 

“That’s about as undemocratic as you can get,” Schoen said.

 

“Can you imagine the slap in the face that is to the 75 million or more voters?”

 

“Fair-minded people don’t support using the impeachment process to then try to bar someone from running for office again,” he added.

 

The Democrat-controlled House on Jan. 13 voted 232–197 to impeach Trump on a single article of impeachment, alleging that the president incited an “insurrection” that caused the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6.

Famed private investigator, Jack Palladino, dies days after violent robbery

 

Private investigator to the stars Jack Palladino has died four days after suffering a traumatic brain injury while getting robbed outside his San Francisco home, his lawyer said.

 

Palladino was 76.

 

The flamboyant P.I. — whose clients included Bill Clinton, Harvey Weinstein and a teen Michael Jackson accuser — banged his head Thursday as two men stole a camera he was using to take photos of them, police and his family said.

 

Palladino died Monday, a day after he was taken off life support, his lawyer confirmed to the Associated Press (AP).

 

Local District Attorney Chesa Boudin told the San Francisco Chronicle that two men already charged with the robbery — Lawrence Thomas, 24, and Tyjone Flournoy, 23 — will now likely face murder charges.

 

Fittingly for such a storied career, their arrests appear to have been Palladino’s final case — with the photos he took of them just before the fatal attack using to ID them, police told his wife, fellow detective Sandra Sutherland.

“He would have loved knowing that,” his wife told the AP.

In a career spanning five decades, Palladino racked up a star-studded roster of clients that included political heavyweights and Hollywood celebrities.

 

He was hired by Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign to put a lid on women who were coming forward to claim they had had sex with the future president, and later helped keep track of women accusing rapist Harvey Weinstein of abuses.

 

He also helped the family of a 14-year-old boy who won a multimillion-dollar settlement from Michael Jackson after accusing him of molestation. The late singer was never charged with a crime in that case.

 

He even played himself in the 1999 Russell Crowe movie “The Insider” as it showed him helping whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand fight Big Tobacco.

 

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown told KTVU that “if you were to cast someone to be a private investigator in a movie, Jack Palladino was the prototype.”

 

Other clients included Don Johnson, Kevin Costner, Robin Williams, Huey Newton and Snoop Dogg, as well as the Hearst family after their daughter Patty was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army.

Polish Government to Breitbart: Big Tech’s ‘Cancel Culture’ Is Bolshevik, Not Democratic

 

“Cancel culture aims to make people afraid to express their opinions” and Big Tech is working with the far left to promote this environment which has more in common with the methods of Soviet Russia than modern democracies, a Polish government minister has told Breitbart London.

 

Sebastian Kaleta is Poland’s deputy minister for justice and the man tasked with shepherding a new law meant to give protections to Polish citizens from censorious and over-powerful Silicon Valley big-tech firms. He told Breitbart London that Poland has real concerns about cancel culture and is legislating against it.

 

Kaleta said that while the worst excesses of political correctness has yet to be felt in socially conservative Poland, his government was watching developments elsewhere — including where political correctness had developed into a full hard-left culture — with concern.

 

Kaleta made clear that Poland’s 50 years of living under Soviet communist occupation and then rule had left the nation cautious about modern developments in censorship — something he said other nations which had never suffered under communism appeared to be blind to. He said: “The pressure from the far left has developed from soft political correctness into a much harsher phase, that of cancel culture… [it is] very worrying, and is more reminiscent of bolshevik standards than democratic ones.”

 

Observing the dangerous path that many Western countries are now walking, Kaleta offered a lesson from Poland’s recent past when “reeducation camps” were the norm for deviants and those who criticised the prevailing orthodoxy. He continued: “Cancel culture aims to make people afraid to express their opinions.

 

“The signals from the left are clear — if you do not agree with us and you criticise us, the ‘system’ we have created will not only get you fired, but it will also limit your access to certain services and products.”

 

Ultimately, Kaleta said, the “neo-Marxists” calling the shots within cultural institutions like the mainstream media and Silicon Valley were using “methods which are closer to those of Soviet Russia than social democracy”. He cited the case of now-cancelled, but until recently the most successful author on earth, J.K. Rowling, as an example of the power of that cancel culture, noting simply: “Slowly but surely, the revolution devours its own children.”

 

The comments to Breitbart London come as Kaleta and the Polish government introduce a new law to protect Polish citizens from censorship at the hands of a remote Silicon Valley elite. Under the new plan, Poles who found their accounts and posts blocked, deleted, or limited for messages which offended Big Tech morals but which did not fall foul of Polish law could appeal for redress.

 

Poland’s prospective parliament-appointed free speech board could demand social media networks reinstate the accounts of wronged Poles. Poland could levy fines of up to 50 million zloty ($14 million) per offence in cases where they refused to comply. Ultimately, he explained: “Freedom of speech needs to be defended from censorship.”

Texas Governor Vows State Action to Fill Gaps Left by Biden’s ‘Open Border Policies’

 

During his State of the State Address on Monday night, Texas Governor Greg Abbott pledged to “fortify” the state’s border security efforts. The statement follows actions by the new administration of President Joe Biden to end the construction of border wall systems and related policies.

 

“Because of the federal government’s open border policies,” Governor Abbott said while speaking from Visionary Fiber Technologies in Lockhart, Texas, “Texas must fortify its efforts to secure our border.”

 

Abbott’s comments follow actions taken by President Biden on this first day in office where he called a halt to the construction of border wall systems funded by congressional authorizations during the Trump administration, as reported by Breitbart Texas. Biden also ended the Migrant Protection Program which effectively ended the Obama-Biden era catch-and-release policies regarding migrants illegally entering the U.S.

 

“We already have planes in the air, boots on the ground, boats on the water, and cruisers on the roads,” the Texas governor said, referring to the state’s efforts. “We must expand our efforts to crack down on human trafficking and drug smuggling in Texas.”

 

Texas legislators called for spending nearly $800 million on border security efforts over the next two years, the Austin American-Statesman reported. The proposed $797 million budget is a reduction of $3.5 million from the previous biennium.

 

Over the past three legislative sessions, Texas hired approximately 1,000 more Department of Public Safety troopers to help support efforts along the state’s southern border with Mexico. The state also built technology and training centers. National Guardsmen and airmen also participated in the Texas border security efforts.

 

An April 2017 report published by the National Economics Editorial placed the cost of illegal immigration to Texas taxpayers at $12.36 billion per year, or 9.6 percent of the state’s budget.

The property was bought without a mortgage via an anonymous company registered in an offshore tax haven.

 

Simon Taylor, a co-founder of non-profit investigators Global Witness who spent several years in the late 1990s digging into the Dos Santos regime, said: “The fact that this property appears to be owned secretly by Isabel dos Santos, through a company based in a tax haven, should raise all the red flags for corruption risk.

 

The NCA estimates that more than £100 billion of criminal funds are laundered through the UK each year. But ever since investigators were given powers last year to freeze assets using “Unexplained Wealth Orders” (UWOs), only a handful of orders have been obtained.

 

When not rubbing shoulders with pop star Nicki Minaj, actress Lindsay Lohan, and disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein (pictured), she can be seen on her Instagram account holding forth at lavish symposiums for international investors.

 

The country is ranked 165 out of 180 on the latest “Corruption Perceptions Index” produced by Transparency International. According to a report by the anti-corruption organisation, “a deeply entrenched patronage system” arose under President Dos Santos, which benefitted members of the “Futungo”, a secretive cabal of senior politicians and their families who “control much of the opaque financial dealings of the state, using a significant proportion of government resources outside the state budget in a parallel system of state revenue deployment […], enjoy unchecked access to state resources and are widely suspected of using public resources for their personal gain.”

 

Meanwhile, a third of Angolans get by on less than two dollars a day.

 

Isabel dos Santos amassed an estimated $2.3 billion fortune in the form of large shares in Angola’s key industries, including cement, banking, telecoms, and diamonds.

 

But when journalists at Forbes magazine investigated how she made it, they claimed it had largely been derived from her political connections; she would emerge as the beneficiary of lucrative state contracts decreed by her father, or receive chunks of companies wanting to invest in Angola.

 

It is understood that this is just one of a number of “super prime” mansions she owns in London.

 

UK Land Registry title deeds record the owner as Wilkson Properties Limited, a company incorporated in the Isle of Man. The British Crown dependency has resisted attempts by British MPs to open up to the public a register of who really owns and controls its companies. But last month they backed down and promised to do so by 2023.

 

José Eduardo dos Santos announced his retirement as Angola’s president in March 2016. Three months later, he appointed his daughter Isabel chairwoman of Sonangol, the Angolan state-owned oil company.

 

She was fired from the post in November the following year by the new president João Lourenço, and summoned by prosecutors in mid 2018 to answer questions about transactions she approved at the parastatal that investigators say are suspicious – which she denies. But she ignored the summons, and left for Europe where she now lives in exile.

Judicial Watch and Daily Caller News Foundation Appeal Court Decision about Hidden Biden Senatorial Records

 

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch announced today it filed a notice of appeal to the Supreme Court of Delaware, asking for a reversal of the opinion of the Superior Court of Delaware, which is blocking a state Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for access to records about President Joe Biden’s senatorial records held by the University of Delaware. Biden’s papers include more than 1,850 boxes of archival records from his senate career.

 

The appeal comes in Judicial Watch and the Daily Caller News Foundation’s lawsuit filed after a Delaware Attorney General’s opinion denied access to the records (Daily Caller News Foundation v. University of Delaware (No. N20A-07-001)). The Delaware FOIA lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of the State of Delaware on July 2, 2020.

 

The appeal is challenging the Superior Court of Delaware’s January 4, 2021, ruling upholding the Delaware state attorney general’s opinion that the records are not “public records” because, the opinion concludes without evidence, no public funds are used to support the Biden records project at the University of Delaware.

 

Judicial Watch responded in court that it is impossible for the housing of Biden’s senatorial records in the University of Delaware’s Library to not be supported by any public funds. Judicial Watch noted that the University admitted that “[t]he State of Delaware provides the University with approximately $120 million each year through an appropriation in the state budget,” but has yet to show how public funds are not used to support the papers.

 

Judicial Watch further pointed out that “archival storage space and professional staff members’ time are things of value that it can be inferred are paid for with public funds,” and notes that the requests even listed the “University personnel who maintain the Senatorial Papers whose salaries, it can be inferred, are paid with State funds.” Judicial Watch requested that the Superior Court order the University to search for and produce the requested records.

 

“We have no idea why the University of Delaware is hiding these materials that the public should have every right to see and we are grateful for Judicial Watch and our local counsel for pushing this case hard. When people ask why our institutions are no longer trusted they should look up this case,” said Daily Caller News Foundation President Neil Patel.

 

“There is significant public interest in the special deal between Joe Biden and the University of Delaware that is keeping Biden’s Senate records completely secret,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “Delaware law is explicit in requiring state entities, including the University of Delaware, to provide public access to these records.”

Lindsey Graham: If Dems want impeachment witnesses, GOP will call on FBI to testify

 

If Democrats open “a can of worms” by calling witnesses during former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, Senate Republicans will call on the FBI to testify, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said, Fox News reported.

 

The trial is set for next Tuesday.

 

Democrats are expected to announce as soon as Tuesday whether they will call witnesses, Reuters reported Monday.

 

“If you open that can of worms, we’ll want the FBI to come in and tell us about how people pre-planned this attack and what happened with the security footprint at the Capitol,” Graham told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday night. “You open up Pandora’s Box if you call one witness.”

 

In the same interview, Graham said that the “second impeachment of Donald Trump is not wearing well over time. Democrats are in a box.”

 

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has not publicly stated his views on impeachment yet, but he did say on the Senate floor last month that the mob who violently stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6 were “provoked” by Trump and “other powerful people.” Last week, too, McConnell voted with 44 other Senate Republicans against tabling a vote on the constitutionality of Trump’s second impeachment, the first time a commander-in-chief has received an impeachment trial in the upper chamber after leaving office. The vote was ultimately tabled.

 

Graham provided his insight into what Senate Republicans think of impeachment.

 

“I had a great meeting with Sen. McConnell today, I think every Republican sees the House process as an affront to the presidency and due process,” the South Carolina Republican said.

 

Exactly one week after the deadly January 6 riot, the House of Representatives voted 232-197 to impeach Trump for “incitement of insurrection.”

 

When asked about the concerns surrounding the constitutionality of impeaching a former president, Graham said, “Sen. McConnell basically told the Republican conference exactly what you just said. He was offended by the process in the House.”

 

The trial scheduled to start February 9 will be overseen by Senate President Pro Tempore Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) instead of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

 

Trump allies have put it out in the open that the main argument they plan to make is that the impeachment trial is unconstitutional since the former president has already left office.

 

In order to successfully convict Trump, 17 Republicans would have to break party lines and vote will with all 50 members of the Senate Democratic Caucus. However, 45 Republican senators including McConnell voting last week to not table a vote on the trial’s constitutionality has been widely interpreted to mean that the trial will be dead on arrival next week.

Last March a federal court ordered a deposition of Hillary Clinton on her emails and Benghazi attack records in response to a FOIA lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch.

 

Hillary Clinton’s lawyers immediately filed an emergency appeal to stop her court-ordered email testimony.

 

Clinton’s team filed an emergency writ of mandamus to avoid testifying and the DC Court of Appeals granted her relief in August.

 

Judicial Watch refuses to back down and is now taking the fight to the US Supreme Court.

 

Judicial Watch announced today that it filed a petition for writ of certiorari (“cert petition”) with the U.S. Supreme Court asking it to take up its challenge to an appeals court order exempting Hillary Clinton from testifying under oath about her emails. Judicial Watch argues the court should hear its case because the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit erred in giving Clinton unwarranted special treatment that conflicts both with Supreme Court precedent and the precedents of other courts of appeal, including its own.

 

As Judicial Watch argues in its cert petition, granting Clinton this extraordinary relief flies in the face of the D.C. Circuit’s own precedent, most recently in the Michael Flynn case, who, unlike Clinton, was denied mandamus relief.

Exclusive: Suspected Chinese hackers used SolarWinds bug to spy on U.S. payroll agency – sources

 

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Suspected Chinese hackers exploited a flaw in software made by SolarWinds Corp to help break into U.S. government computers last year, five people familiar with the matter told Reuters, marking a new twist in a sprawling cybersecurity breach that U.S. lawmakers have labeled a national security emergency.

 

Two people briefed on the case said FBI investigators recently found that the National Finance Center, a federal payroll agency inside the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was among the affected organizations, raising fears that data on thousands of government employees may have been compromised.

 

The software flaw exploited by the suspected Chinese group is separate from the one the United States has accused Russian government operatives of using to compromise up to 18,000 SolarWinds customers, including sensitive federal agencies, by hijacking the company’s Orion network monitoring software.

 

Security researchers have previously said a second group of hackers was abusing SolarWinds’ software at the same time as the alleged Russian hack, but the suspected connection to China and ensuing U.S. government breach have not been previously reported.

 

Reuters was not able to establish how many organizations were compromised by the suspected Chinese operation. The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing investigations, said the attackers used computer infrastructure and hacking tools previously deployed by state-backed Chinese cyberspies.

 

The Chinese foreign ministry said attributing cyberattacks was a “complex technical issue” and any allegations should be supported with evidence. “China resolutely opposes and combats any form of cyberattacks and cyber theft,” it said in a statement.

 

SolarWinds said it was aware of a single customer that was compromised by the second set of hackers but that it had “not found anything conclusive” to show who was responsible. The company added that the attackers did not gain access to its own internal systems and that it had released an update to fix the exploited software bug in December.

 

A USDA spokesman acknowledged a data breach had occurred but declined further comment. The FBI declined to comment.

 

Although the two espionage efforts overlap and both targeted the U.S. government, they were separate and distinctly different operations, according to four people who have investigated the attacks and outside experts who reviewed the code used by both sets of hackers.

The side-by-side missions show how hackers are focusing on weaknesses in obscure but essential software products that are widely used by major corporations and government agencies.

 

“Apparently SolarWinds was a high value target for more than one group,” said Jen Miller-Osborn, the deputy director of threat intelligence at Palo Alto Networks’ Unit42. Former U.S. chief information security officer Gregory Touhill said separate groups of hackers targeting the same software product was not unusual. “It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a nation-state actor surfing in behind someone else, it’s like ‘drafting’ in NASCAR,” he said, where one racing car gets an advantage by closely following another’s lead.

 

The connection between the second set of attacks on SolarWinds customers and suspected Chinese hackers was only discovered in recent weeks, according to security analysts investigating alongside the U.S. government.

 

Reuters could not determine what information the attackers were able to steal from the National Finance Center (NFC) or how deep they burrowed into its systems. But the potential impact could be “massive,” former U.S. government officials told Reuters.

 

The NFC is responsible for handling the payroll of multiple government agencies, including several involved in national security, such as the FBI, State Department, Homeland Security Department and Treasury Department, the former officials said.

 

Records held by the NFC include federal employee social security numbers, phone numbers and personal email addresses as well as banking information. On its website, the NFC says it “services more than 160 diverse agencies, providing payroll services to more than 600,000 Federal employees.” The USDA spokesman said in an email: “USDA has notified all customers (including individuals and organizations) whose data has been affected.”

 

“Depending on what data were compromised, this could be an extremely serious breach of security,” said Tom Warrick, a former senior official at the U.S Department of Homeland Security. “It could allow adversaries to know more about U.S. officials, improving their ability to collect intelligence.”

U.S. Mint Still Rationing Silver Coins Amid ‘Exceptional’ Demand

 

The Reddit-fueled run-up in silver prices might be stalling, but the U.S. Mint said it is still rationing its sales of silver coins because of “continued exceptional market demand,” as well as limited supplies and manufacturing capacity.

 

The Mint is also allocating gold and platinum coin sales to authorized purchasers, it said in a statement Tuesday. The policy will be in place “for the foreseeable future.”

 

The mint’s silver coin sales jumped 24% to 4.775 million ounces last month, marking the highest for a January since 2017. The Mint’s announcement comes after retail sites were overwhelmed with demand for bars and coins. Throughout the past year, and in part due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, the Mint was unable to meet demand due to precious metal blank availability and plant capacity issues.

 

The Mint also said it will have a limited production window to produce current design American Eagle gold and silver coins, as it’s scheduled to start production of redesigned coins in the summer of 2021, and coins for that program must be produced in advance of the launch date.

Oil jumps 2%, hits highest in a year as producers limit supply

 

Oil prices rose more than 2% on Tuesday, reaching their highest in 12 months after major producers showed they were reining in output roughly in line with their commitments. The global and U.S. crude benchmarks rallied as optimism about more U.S. economic stimulus added to market bullishness from supply cuts. The rally began as OPEC production increases were less than expected.

 

Crude output from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries rose for a seventh month in January but the increase was smaller than expected, a Reuters survey found.

 

Voluntary cuts of 1 million barrels per day by OPEC’s de facto leader, Saudi Arabia, are set to be implemented from the beginning of February through March. Russian output increased in January but is in line with the OPEC+ supply pact, while in Kazakhstan oil volumes fell for the month. U.S. distillate fuel stockpiles, including heating oil, were forecast to have dropped 400,000 barrels last week, according to a Reuters poll. Crude stockpiles were expected to rise by 400,000 barrels. However, energy giant BP flagged a difficult start to 2021 amid declining product demand, noting that January retail volumes were down about 20% year-on-year, compared with a decline of 11% in the fourth quarter.

 

Oil demand is nevertheless expected to recover in 2021, BP said, with global inventories seen returning to their five-year average by the middle of the year.

Amazon announced on Tuesday that AWS CEO Andy Jassy will replace Jeff Bezos as CEO during the third quarter of this year. Bezos will transition to executive chair of Amazon’s board.

 

Fellow Amazonians:

I’m excited to announce that this Q3 I’ll transition to Executive Chair of the Amazon Board and Andy Jassy will become CEO. In the Exec Chair role, I intend to focus my energies and attention on new products and early initiatives. Andy is well known inside the company and has been at Amazon almost as long as I have. He will be an outstanding leader, and he has my full confidence.

 

This journey began some 27 years ago. Amazon was only an idea, and it had no name. The question I was asked most frequently at that time was, “What’s the internet?” Blessedly, I haven’t had to explain that in a long while.

 

Today, we employ 1.3 million talented, dedicated people, serve hundreds of millions of customers and businesses, and are widely recognized as one of the most successful companies in the world.

Andy Jassy: Amazon's $6 Billion Man

 

Amazon has built its entire business around the idea of moving quickly. Andy Jassy, senior vice president of Amazon Web Services, has taken this philosophy to a whole new level.

 

Jassy, who founded Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2003 with a team of 57 people, has built a $6 billion-plus run-rate business with more than 1 million customers in 190 countries in less than a decade. That's even more impressive considering that Amazon itself was only a $5.26 billion business after nine years.

 

So just how fast is Jassy reshaping the computing landscape? Salesforce, often characterized as a cloud computing pioneer, took 16 years to reach the $6 billion run-rate mark. Deutsche Bank estimates that AWS is nearly 10 times the size of Microsoft Azure, its closest competitor, which launched five years ago. Jassy, who grew up in the New York suburbs and is a die-hard Big Apple sports fan, likes to think of AWS—which has legacy enterprise vendors scrambling to play catch-up—as the underdog equivalent of the New York Giants beating the favored New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, not once but twice.

 

In fact, Jassy sees similarities between the sneak attacks that both the Giants and AWS have executed on the competition. "I'm not sure that people would have guessed that AWS would have been the pioneer and the strong leader in the infrastructure technology space," Jassy told CRN in a recent interview at Amazon's Seattle headquarters. AWS was an underdog in the computing space when it launched a platform of compute, storage, database and application services in 2006 that customers could rent by the hour and access over the Internet. Legacy enterprise vendors had long talked about delivering these kinds of services, but AWS, under Jassy's leadership, beat them all to the punch.

 

These days, given AWS' marketplace momentum, it's getting harder to paint the fast-growing business unit as an underdog. AWS generated $1.57 billion in sales and $265 million in profit in its fiscal first quarter—the first in which Amazon broke out results for the unit.

 

AWS followed that up with an even better performance in its fiscal second quarter, with revenue growing 81 percent year over year to $1.82 billion, and profit of $391 million compared with $77 million in last year's quarter.

 

Some enterprise vendors, like IBM and VMware, have tried to dissuade their partners from working with AWS. But Jassy told CRN it's time for solution providers—some of whom have found it difficult to align with AWS—to get on board.

 

"I totally understand—it's a hard decision for companies who have been successful in a different model to decide to embrace a newer model. But once you realize that model is succeeding, it's important for your future to do so," he said. "But when there's a big shift going on, you can howl at the wind all you want, but if the shift is going to happen because it's good for customers, it is going to happen."

 

Amazon faced a similar dilemma in its retail business when it decided to let third-party vendors sell products in its online marketplace, Jassy said. Although doing so was a major strategy shift—and one that risked upsetting its existing business partners—it ended up working out. Today, he said, third-party products make up around one-third of the products listed on Amazon

 

"We did it both because we knew it was better for customers—because it gave them more selection and better choices on prices—but also because we realized you can't fight gravity," Jassy told CRN. "In any kind of big shift, you're better off embracing the change and trying to figure out how to be a part of shaping it than having it end up shaping you and having to chase it."

 

It's Jassy's job to monitor the market for near-term and long-term threats and to make sure AWS remains hungry despite its huge lead in the cloud market. As the public face for AWS, Jassy takes the stage at events to explain how new AWS products and services will benefit customers. As chief of the industry's most successful cloud vendor, Jassy is also a kind of ambassador for technology that, despite all its hype, is still in its early stages of industry adoption.

 

"What strikes me about Andy is his extreme focus," said Jeff Aden, executive vice president of marketing and strategic development at 2nd Watch, a Seattle-based AWS partner. "He's genuine, authentic and self-aware, and he's able to articulate the value of caring for the customer and being an advocate."

 

"We truly believe that cloud computing would be drastically different today without Andy Jassy's foresight, customer passion and ability to execute," said Garret Carlson, director of strategic alliances at Seattle-based AWS partner Slalom Consulting.
