US Cargo Thefts Erupt As Violent Crime Spreads Across America

The latest trucking news from Overdrive is particularly disturbing, outlines how cargo theft across the US surged during the virus-induced downturn in the second quarter.

Overdrive, citing data from SensiGuard, a cargo theft recording firm aggregating data from transportation security councils, insurance companies and law enforcement organizations, said cargo theft surged 56% year-over-year in the quarter.

The cargo theft monitoring firm recorded 227 thefts over the three months ending June, with 96 in April, 67 in May, and 64 in June. In dollar amount, the average theft was about a quarter-million dollars. It said 23% of all cargo thefts were miscellaneous products for retailers. Food and drinks made up about 20% of all thefts.

California, for the first time since 3Q17, was dethroned as the state with most cargo thefts. Texas became the epicenter of thefts in 2Q20, followed by California, Illinois, Florida, and Tennessee.

The recession has transformed America into a dangerous country as any hope for a "V-shaped" economic rebound this year has been dashed.

Mitchell then drove the truck deep into the mountains, ordered the girl out of the truck “to lay down and die,” slit her throat twice, and crushed her head with rocks. Mitchell and his accomplice proceeded to dismember and bury the victims’ bodies and burn their clothes. He later confessed to the murders and led law enforcement to the victims’ remains. In May 2003, a federal jury found Mitchell guilty of numerous federal crimes — including first-degree murder, felony murder, and carjacking resulting in death — and recommended a sentence of death, which the district court imposed. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For many locals, going to Churchill Downs is like going to the grocery store - you know where to go and what to do. However, if this year is your first Kentucky Derby, walking through those gates could feel more like walking into a foreign country - thousands of people speaking a language you don't understand.

So, for all the newbies out there (myself included), these are the Derby basics. If Churchill Downs was a university, this would be the freshman year 101 class - giving you enough knowledge that you can talk at the track without looking like a total "dummy".

To help us out, we've recruited a face that long-time viewers of WHAS11 are sure to recognize. Gary Roedemeier spent 25 years as an anchor and reporter for WHAS, and even though he's technically retired now, he's still our resident Derby expert.

What is a furlong?

Horse races are categorized in terms of "furlongs", which is a measurement term. One furlong equals an eighth of a mile. The Kentucky Derby is a mile and a quarter, so it's 10 furlongs.

What kind of horses run in the Kentucky Derby?

Derby horses are exclusively three-year-old Thoroughbreds. A Thoroughbred is a specific breed of horse that was developed in England in the 17th and 18th centuries. These horses are known for their agility and speed, which makes them ideal for racing.

Who chooses what horses get to run in the Derby? To earn a spot in the starting gate, each horse must complete a series of designated races at tracks across the country and around the world. Points are awarded to the top four finishers in each race. The 20 horses with the most points will get to run in the Kentucky Derby.

What do I wear to the Derby?

Worried that you'll stand out like a sore thumb with what you're wearing? You'd have to try pretty hard.

"I've often told people who are coming to the Kentucky Derby that nothing at the Derby is inappropriate," Roedemeier said. "If you look at the infield, and the dress of the people who are coming - you know, you want to dress appropriately, for TV - but you're going to see the wildest craziest outfits you've ever seen."

New Jersey Proposes $1,000 'Baby Bond' As Wealth Gap Hits Extreme

The wealth gap between in America is the widest in history, or at least the 244-year history of the country.

In a bid to address the decades of social-imbalances, mostly a byproduct of de-industrialization, technological advances, and, of course, the Federal Reserve's monetary policies, New Jersey's own U.S. Senator Cory Booker has proposed a new plan to invest $1,000 at birth in a nest egg for children in low-income households, which could, at one day, give them a financial lift, only accessible at the age of 18. As NYT explains:

"The idea to give out the so-called baby bonds is a scaled-down version of legislation introduced by Senator Cory Booker, Democrat of New Jersey, to help address a disparity that, on average, has left white families in the United States seven times wealthier than their Black counterparts."

The New York Times said, "the move would be a small but tangible step toward confronting inequities that have been brought into particularly stark relief by the coronavirus pandemic, which has disproportionately affected Black and Latino people, who have died and lost jobs at far higher rates."

"The inequities are too wide, too raw, to ignore," Murphy said in an interview.

Every baby born in 2021, to households who earn less than $131,000 per year, are eligible for the new "baby bonds". The plan will cost an estimated $72 million in 2021, with approximately 72,000 babies expected to qualify.

"The source of inequality generally is that some young adults have capital and others do not," said Darrick Hamilton, a professor of economics and urban policy at The New School in New York City. "The difference between a renter and a homeowner is a down payment."

"This is saying: Irrespective to the family you are born into, that you have a birthright to capital when you become an adult," Hamilton added.

The $1,000 nest egg, with interest over 18 years, would be worth around $1,270 in 2039.

To put the baby bonds in perspective for readers, this could be the beginning innings of People's Quantitative Easing (PQE), where the Fed monetizes treasury debt to fund direct transfer payments.

FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitive Yaser Abdel Said Now in Custody

Yaser Abdel Said, a capital murder suspect wanted in connection with the homicide of his two teenage daughters, Amina and Sarah, was taken into custody without incident today in Justin, Texas, by the FBI’s Dallas Field Office. Said was placed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list on December 4, 2014. Said is currently in federal custody and will soon be transferred to Dallas County.

“The FBI-led Dallas Violent Crimes Task Force has worked tirelessly to find Yaser Abdel Said. These experienced investigators never gave up on their quest to find him and pledged to never forget the young victims in this case,” said FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge Matthew DeSarno. “Said was placed on the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List nearly six years ago for the heinous act he committed against his daughters. His capture and arrest bring us one step closer to justice for Amina and Sarah. We want to thank our partners at the Irving Police Department for working with us to apprehend this dangerous individual.”

“On January 1, 2008, the Irving Police Department opened a murder investigation after two young girls were found shot to death. Since that night, the members of the Irving Police Department and our partners with the Dallas FBI have tirelessly pursued justice for Amina and Sarah,” said Irving Police Chief Jeff Spivey. “Even after 12 years of frustration and dead ends, the pursuit for their killer never ceased. Today’s arrest of their father, Yaser Said brings us closer to ensuring justice is served on their behalf.”

Said took his daughters Amina (18) and Sarah (17) for a ride in his taxicab on January 1, 2008, under the guise of taking them to get something to eat. He drove them to Irving, Texas, where he allegedly shot both girls inside the taxicab. They both died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Based on an investigation by the Irving Police Department, on January 2, 2008, a capital murder-multiple warrant was issued for Said’s arrest. On August 21, 2008, a federal unlawful flight to avoid prosecution warrant was issued by the United States District Court, Northern District of Texas.

The search for Said was coordinated by the FBI’s Dallas Violent Crimes Task Force, which is composed of FBI special agents and officers from the Carrollton, Dallas, Garland, Grand Prairie, and Irving Police Departments and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Yaser Abdel Said was the 504th person to be placed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, which was established in March 1950. Additional information concerning Said and the FBI’s list of Ten Most Wanted Fugitives can be found at fbi.gov/wanted.

Christchurch mosque attacks: Terrorist sentenced to life in jail without parole

The man who carried out the mosque attacks in Christchurch on 15 March 2019 has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of ever leaving jail.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 29, had earlier admitted 51 charges of murder, 40 of attempted murder and one charge of terrorism.

Justice Cameron Mander this afternoon imposed the sentence - the harshest available to the court.

It marks the first time a convicted person has ever been imprisoned with no possibility of parole.

Tarrant murdered 51 worshippers at Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre on 15 March last year.

He also shot and injured 40 more in an attempt to murder them.

Tarrant was also sentenced to life imprisonment on one count of engaging in a terrorist act.

It marked the first time anyone was sentenced for offending under the Terrorism Suppression Act.

The terrorist did not oppose being jailed without the possibility of parole.

A packed public gallery and seven other courtrooms filled with victims, their families and supporters watched as the sentence was handed down.

They shared hugs and tears after court was adjourned.

Before handing down the sentence, Justice Cameron Mander read through the names of the murder victims, relaying details of their lives and the shattered families they left behind to the terrorist.

He then detailed the injuries of the 40 survivors of the attack.

The survivors had to endure long-lasting and deep-seated trauma as a result of the attack, Justice Mander said.

"The mosques were places of sanctuary, this country too … was also seen as a place of refuge and safety by many of those you targeted," he said.

"I have no doubt you came to New Zealand and targeted its Muslim community for that very reason."

The attack was inhuman, the judge said.

"You showed no mercy.

"You ignored the pleas of the wounded to be spared. You advanced on them, stood over them and shot them."

The terrorist was motivated by a "base hatred of people perceived to be different from yourself".

"It is not apparent that you are genuinely remorseful for your actions apart from the circumstances in which you now find yourself," Justice Mander said.

The terrorist's hateful ideology was anathema to the values of New Zealand's society.

"It has no place here. It has no place anywhere," the judge said.
