On January 12, 2002, the Islamic Association for Palestine news agency ran an article claiming that representatives of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Israeli Shin Beth experts have recommended that the relatively conservative Palestinian society be flooded with pornography, drugs and gambling in order to keep Palestinian youths away from joining the resistance against Israeli occupation and apartheid. The idea, according to the IAP report, "first came from the Israeli side who suggested that only these things could take Palestinian youths away from their hostile fixation on Israel." Apparently Israel tried broadcasting pornography from at least one television station in the southern part of the West Bank, but had to pull back from its cultural offensive because of protests from Jewish settlers in the area, who felt that "pornography materials on local screens could have a detrimental effect on the settler population." "The settlers," according to one source cited in the IAP article, "are mostly religious people and like most Palestinians, they don't like these things."

At 4:30 pm on March 30, 2002, Israeli military forces took over Palestinian TV stations when they occupied Ramallah in the West Bank, immediately shutting them down. What followed was a little more unusual. Shortly after occupying the Al-Watan TV station, the Israeli forces began broadcasting pornography over its transmitter. Eventually, according to a report from The Advertiser, an Australian newspaper, the Israelis expanded their cultural offensive against the Palestinian people by broadcasting pornography over two other Palestinian stations, the Ammwaj and Al-Sharaq channels. One 52-year-old Palestinian mother of three children, according to the report in the The Advertiser, complained about "the deliberate psychological damage caused by these broadcasts." The only Palestinian station not taken over by the Israelis ran a written message at the bottom of its screen claiming that "Anything currently shown on Al-Watan and other local TV channels has nothing to do with Palestinian programs but is being broadcast by the Israeli occupation forces. Kyle Rittenhouse will not face gun charges in Lake County related to the AR-15-style weapon he is charged with using to kill two men and wound a third during violent protests in Kenosha in August, prosecutors announced Tuesday.

An Antioch police investigation found that the Smith & Wesson .223 caliber rifle β€œwas purchased, stored and used in Wisconsin” and turned up no evidence the 17-year-old β€œphysically possessed” the weapon in Illinois, according to a news release from the office of Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim. The news release does not reveal who is believed to have bought or held the gun before the shooting.

 

The Antioch teen, however, still faces a gun charge in Wisconsin, as Kenosha County prosecutors have charged him with possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18, a misdemeanor. His attorney, John M. Pierce argued on Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s show in late August that the charge is β€œincorrect as a matter of state law” and that the U.S. Constitution and federal law protect the teen’s right to have the gun, though he did not go into detail on that legal argument.

 

Little has been made public about the gun’s history or the teen’s potential licensure to have firearms, so it’s unclear what β€” if any β€” charges Rittenhouse or anyone else might have faced here if the investigation had found he possessed it locally. An attorney working with Rittenhouse’s legal team has said the gun belonged to an unidentified friend of the teenager.

Antioch police could not immediately be reached for comment.

 

Along with the gun charge, Kenosha County prosecutors have charged him with murder and other counts alleging he shot three men with the rifle Aug. 25 during violent protests over white police Officer Rusten Sheskey’s shooting of 29-year-old Black man Jacob Blake a couple of days earlier.

 

Prosecutors and Rittenhouse’s lawyers are currently battling over whether he’ll be returned to Wisconsin to face those charges. His attorneys argued against his extradition in a petition last week, contending in part that sending the teen to adult jail in Kenosha County would endanger him. Lake County prosecutors are due to file their counterarguments this week and Judge Paul Novak has scheduled a hearing on the matter for Oct. 30.

 

Videos show that Rittenhouse was among numerous civilians armed with rifles who interjected themselves into the protests, property destruction and looting that followed Blake’s shooting.

 

Kenosha County prosecutors wrote that video showed the teen running across a parking lot, trailed by Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, of Kenosha. Video showed Rosenbaum appearing to throw a plastic bag at Rittenhouse and missing him, prosecutors wrote. A witness told police that Rosenbaum, who appeared on video to be unarmed, had tried to grab the gun before he was fatally shot, prosecutors wrote.

 

The teen’s lawyers contended in their petition last week that someone other than Rosenbaum had fired a gun in Rittenhouse’s direction just before the confrontation that killed Rosenbaum. The filing alleged that Rosenbaum had threatened Rittenhouse before chasing the teen and lunging for his rifle. The teen fired β€œunder grave risk of immediate harm,” the petition stated.

 

Rittenhouse then ran before someone knocked off his hat, and he tripped and fell, prosecutors wrote. Then, Anthony Huber, 26, of Silver Lake, Wisconsin, approached Rittenhouse with a skateboard as the teen was still on his back, prosecutors wrote. Huber tried to grab the gun as the skateboard β€œ(made) contact” with Rittenhouse’s shoulder before the gunman fired one shot, and Huber collapsed and died, prosecutors alleged.

 

Rittenhouse’s lawyers argued in their filing that the skateboard hit Rittenhouse’s head and he shot Huber as they wrestled for control of the rifle.

 

Prosecutors wrote that Rittenhouse then shot a man who had approached him, Gaige Grosskreutz, of West Allis, Wisconsin. Grosskreutz appeared to be holding a handgun when he was wounded in the arm, prosecutors wrote.

 

The filing the teen’s lawyers made alleged Grosskreutz β€œlowered his handgun in Rittenhouse’s direction.”

The federal prosecutor appointed by Attorney General William P. Barr to review whether Obama-era officials improperly requested the identities of individuals whose names were redacted in intelligence documents has completed his work without finding any substantive wrongdoing, according to people familiar with the matter.

 

The revelation that U.S. Attorney John Bash, who left the department last week, had concluded his review without criminal charges or any public report will rankle President Trump at a moment when he is particularly upset at the Justice Department. The department has so far declined to release the results of Bash’s work, though people familiar with his findings say they would likely disappoint conservatives who have tried to paint the β€œunmasking” of names β€” a common practice in government to help understand classified documents β€” as a political conspiracy.

 

The president in recent days has pressed federal law enforcement to move against his political adversaries and complained that a different prosecutor tapped by Barr to investigate the FBI’s 2016 investigation of his campaign will not be issuing any public findings before the election.

 

Legal analysts feared Bash’s review was yet another attempt by Trump’s Justice Department to target political opponents of the president. Even if it ultimately produced no results of consequence, legal analysts said, it allowed Trump and other conservatives to say Obama-era officials were under scrutiny, as long as the case stayed active.

 

The department β€” both under Barr and Trump’s previous attorney general, Jeff Sessions β€” has repeatedly turned to U.S. attorneys across the country to investigate matters of Republican concern, distressing current and former Justice Department officials, who fear department leaders are repeatedly caving to Trump’s pressure to benefit his allies and target those he perceives as political enemies.

 

Kerri Kupec, the Justice Department’s top spokeswoman, had first revealed Bash’s review in May, after Republican senators made public a declassified list of U.S. officials, including former vice president Joe Biden, who made requests that would ultimately reveal the name of Trump adviser Michael Flynn in intelligence documents in late 2016 and early 2017.

In an appearance on Fox News that month, Kupec told host Sean Hannity that Barr had tapped Bash, the top federal prosecutor in San Antonio, to review Obama-era officials’ unmasking requests. She said that though the practice β€œinherently isn’t wrong,” the frequency with which requests were made or the motive for making them could be β€œproblematic.”

 

How a Flynn theory became central to the Trump reelection campaign

 

Though β€œunmasking” is common and appropriate because it allows government officials to better understand a document they are reading, Trump and others suggested the list of requests that ultimately revealed Flynn’s name showed wrongdoing.

 

Bash’s team was focused not just on unmasking, but also whether Obama-era officials provided information to reporters, according to people familiar with the probe, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive investigation. But the findings ultimately turned over to Barr fell short of what Trump and others might have hoped, and the attorney general’s office elected not to release them publicly, the people familiar with the matter said. The Washington Post was unable to review the full results of what Bash found.

 

Bash announced last week that he was leaving the department β€” surprising many in the Justice Department because it came so close to the election β€” though he made no mention of the unmasking review. He said in a statement that he had informed the attorney general of the decision a month earlier and had β€œaccepted an offer for a position in the private sector.” He gave formal resignation letters to the president and the attorney general on Oct. 5, and his last day was Friday.

 

Before being nominated as the U.S. attorney, Bash worked in the Solicitor General’s Office and as an associate counsel to Trump. Bash thanked Trump and others in the statement, and Barr offered his β€œgratitude” for Bash’s service.

 

β€œI appreciate his service to our nation and to the Justice Department, and I wish him the very best,” Barr said.

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on Tuesday suggested the FBI and CIA are attempting to cover up something β€œembarrassing” in their emails regarding the Russia scandal. This comes on the heels of declassified documents showing former CIA Director John Brennan briefed former President Barack Obama about 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s β€œplan” to distract from her email scandal by alleging Russian collusion by then-candidate Donald Trump.

 

Grassley warned on Fox Business Network’s β€œMornings with Maria” that if Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden wins the election, the information would continue to be covered up.

 

β€œWell, [Andrew McCabe’s] email that tells us a lot that we don’t know. What a little bit we’ve seen, we are learning more, but we know there is a lot more there because when we were down at Justice Department, we saw a whole binder of these books of his emails, and so yesterday, [Ron] Johnson and I wrote a follow-up,” Grassley outlined. β€œNow, why wouldn’t the first letter that we sent a long time ago get every email if that is what you asked for? But there is something embarrassing in these emails that they want to cover-up.”

 

He continued, β€œAnd this gets me back to what I heard the president last night say in Sanford, Florida β€” he said I am not part of Washington. I’m the first nonpolitician to be President of the United States. I am representing the people of the United States, and they’ve been trying to throw me out of office for four years, and he says if I am not reelected, they are going to get away with it. And so, if we want Durham’s work done, if we want all these emails out, and Biden gets to be president, this is all going to be covered up just like even in this administration, the β€˜deep state’ people have not cooperated even with the chief executive of the United States to get stuff out.”

 

Host Maria Bartiromo asked Grassley what CIA Director Gina Haspel is β€œhiding.”

Paul Ryan is β€œthe man with the plan” to save America, in part by making deficit reduction β€œsexy for the iPod generation.”

 

He’s the man who’s tangled with President Obama in public a year ago – and won.

 

He’s a Republican who can rattle off a list of his favorite Democrats to work with (see video).

 

And now Rep. Paul Ryan is the man who’ll deliver Republicans’ response to Mr. Obama’s State of the Union speech Tuesday night.

 

He may be a seven-term congressman, who’s now Chairman of the powerful House Budget Committee, but on first blush Mr. Ryan looks and acts like the average white yuppie dad you’d see tailgating at a Green Bay Packers game in his native Wisconsin.

 

It’s that casual, everyman exterior – with a budget-wonk brain – that’s made Ryan a Republican up-and-comer.

 

He’s best known for his β€œRoadmap for America’s Future,” which would dramatically decrease federal deficits, including by attacking social security. And he’s one of the founders of the GOP β€œyoung guns” leadership group. Although, interestingly, he didn’t attend the young guns’ roll-out last fall of their Pledge to America – perhaps because it didn’t do enough to tackle the deficit.

 

He’s conservative – having worked for Republican stalwarts William Bennett, Jack Kemp, and Sam Brownback early in his career. He may not get as rhetorically fired-up as some Tea Party icons, but he’s certainly in sync with Tea Party philosophy, telling a Monitor opinion writer recently, β€œThe progressive movement and ideology is a repressive, big-brother movement that drains you of your freedom and liberty, and therefore of your prosperity… The government is taking away your discretion, taking away your choices.”

Q&A: What is β€˜unmasking,’ who does it and why

 

It was not immediately clear why the department was holding back Bash’s findings. Officials do not generally discuss investigations that have been closed without criminal charges β€” though Bash’s case is unusual because it was announced publicly by the department spokeswoman. Justice Department policies and tradition, too, call for prosecutors not to take public steps in cases close to an election that might affect the results.

 

Before Bash’s appointment, Kupec had said that a different federal prosecutor, John Durham in Connecticut, also had been looking at unmasking as part of his broader investigation into the FBI’s 2016 probe of whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia to influence the election. It was not clear how Durham’s and Bash’s work intersected.

 

Barr recently told some Republican lawmakers that no report of Durham’s investigation would be released before the November election, though unlike Bash’s review, Durham’s work seems to be ongoing, people familiar with the matter said. Trump has in recent days called the delay in the Durham case β€œa disgrace,” and asserted that his 2016 Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, should be jailed. He was previously critical of another prosecutor specially tapped by then-Attorney General Sessions to investigate matters related to Clinton, but whose case ended with no public report or allegations of wrongdoing.

 

Barr had said previously he would not hold back Durham’s findings because of concerns about any impact on the election, as investigators were not focused on political candidates.

 

From early on in the Trump administration, some GOP lawmakers have sought to investigate and highlight Obama-era unmasking requests, believing them to be inappropriate.
