Joe Biden’s Transition Co-Chair Hosted Hunter Biden-Linked Chinese Elites at Obama White House

In November 2011, Jeff Zients, then-deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), hosted the Chinese Entrepreneur Club (CEC) for a special meeting at the White House. The CEC, founded in 2006 and often referred to as the “richest club” in the People’s Republic of China, counts among its members some of the richest and most influential personalities in Chinese society.

At the time, the meeting did not draw much attention. However, emails published this week by Peter Schweizer, a senior contributor at Breitbart News and president of the Government Accountability Institute, indicated just how important of a role Hunter Biden and his business associates, including Devon Archer, played in making the White House visit happen.

The emails showed that on November 5, 2011, a colleague of Archer’s reached out to suggest there was an opportunity to gain “outstanding new clients.” According to the email, copies of which were published exclusively by Breitbart News, the colleague told Archer that the CEC had been trying for some time to arrange meetings with high-ranking Obama administration officials when they visited Washington, DC, in mid-November.

“A tour of the White House and a meeting with a member of the chief of staff’s office and [then-Secretary of State] John Kerry would be great,” the colleague wrote.

Up to that point, the CEC had tried and failed to obtain access to the Obama administration.

“From the DC side as you will see below they [CEC] have written letters to several members of the administration and others and have so far not had a strong reaction,” the colleague wrote Archer.

Archer discussed the CEC’s request with two other associates, Gary Fears and Bevan Cooney. Fears, in particular, told Archer to follow-up on the request since the CEC delegation could be “perfect” for a fertilizer mining venture the trio was then pursuing.

Although it is unclear exactly what transpired after the emails reached Archer, only nine days later, on November 14, 2011, the CEC had secured its meeting at the Obama White House. Administration records indicate that a delegation of 30 CEC members received a tour of the White House and met with then-Commerce Secretary John Bryson.

The delegation also, according to its members, met privately with Hunter Biden’s father, then-Vice President Joe Biden. At the time, the vice president was playing a leading role in the Obama administration’s policy towards Beijing. Just that past May, Biden had taken part in talks between the U.S. and China on how to improve “strategic and economic” relations.

Exactly how Archer and his associates arranged the meeting for the CEC is unknown. Visitor logs, though, show that Zients, who was in charge of restructuring the administration’s trade agencies, was the official host for the CEC delegation. It is likely that any arrangement made by Hunter Biden or associates ran through him or the OMB.

After the meeting, Zients would go on to be promoted to acting director of OMB after his superior Jack Lew ascended to the position of White House Chief of Staff. In March 2014, Zients was appointed to lead the National Economic Council, a position he held until Obama left office in 2017.

Since leaving office, Zients appears to have kept in close contact with the Bidens. In September, Biden appointed him to co-chair the presidential transition task force, which will be responsible for staffing a potential Biden White House.

The former vice president’s campaign did not respond to requests for this story.

A receipt bearing his signature and name for the repair has been revealed and it’s a total backbreaker for the media’s narrative.

I’m sorry, what?

Now, not only is having the actual emails themselves released not enough, along with private pictures and text messages which further prove authenticity, but even proving their provenance via a dated receipt is not enough? Notice how the goalposts keep moving. Donald Trump was quite literally impeached on less evidence than this.

But the media wants to play dumb and suddenly raise their standards to levels that are 1) unattainable and 2) never applied to anything to do with Trump, or any Republican for that matter. Unfortunately for them, they can’t continue, with a straight face at least, to claim this is Russian disinformation. It’s clearly, provably not.

The emails are real. It’s not Putin. The media are absolute trash. That’s basically where we are.

Grant application turned over under federal court order quadruples polling places from primary, promises as many as 800,000 votes from city in November. Only 675,000 voted in 2016.

Documents produced by the city of Philadelphia under a federal court order show millions of dollars in nonprofit grant money donated by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is being used to quadruple the number of voting places and massively grow the number of ballots cast in the Democratic stronghold on Nov. 3.

The memos were turned over in a federal lawsuit filed by the conservative Thomas More Society, and they detail how city election officials filed a grant request in August to the Zuckerberg-funded Center for Tech and Civic Life (CTCL) by promising to open 800 polling places and grow voting to as many as 800,000 ballots cast in the general election.

The number of promised polling places is more than four times the 190 polling places opened during the city's pandemic-affected primary earlier this year, and the promised turnout is estimated to be as many as 120,000 voters larger than the 2016 presidential election, which drew about 680,000 voters. About 80% of the vote went to Democrats in 2016 in the city.

"The Office of the City Commissioners understands CTCL's interest in maximizing the number of polling locations and will work to identify over 800 locations," states the city application seeking $10 million for the fall election.

Zuckerberg announced several weeks ago he has donated $250 million to CTCL to help local governments across the country hold elections this fall in the midst of the pandemic. He has since augmented that amount with another $100 million in recent days.

But the Thomas More Society and its lead counsel Phill Kline have filed lawsuits against several of the jurisdictions receiving CTCL grants, arguing the money is wrongly privatizing an election function that should be handled entirely by government and that the grants are targeting mostly Democratic strongholds, raising questions of election interference.

Kline, director of Thomas More's Amistad Society Project, told Just the News that of the top 20 CTCL grants, amounting to $63 million, only one for $289,000 has gone to a county Trump won in 2016.

A federal judge in Pennsylvania recently ordered Philadelphia officials to produce records on how it applied for and won its $10 million grant, and the first records produced indicate the city is using the Zuckerberg money to compensate poll workers with "hazard pay," including election judges who decide ballot integrity issues.

Russian Embassy Says Hacking Accusations Coming From US Have ‘Nothing to Do With Reality’

The Russian Embassy in Washington has refuted US claims of alleged Russian involvement in a major cyber attack targeting officials and various large-scale events, with an embassy representative telling Sputnik that Russia has no intention to engage in destabilizing operations.

On Monday, the US charged six alleged Russian military intelligence officers with a major cyber attack, claiming that they targeted large-scale events, such as elections in France, Ukraine's power grid and American medical facilities.

"It is quite obvious that such information has nothing to do with reality and is aimed only at stirring up Russophobic sentiments in the American society, at launching a 'witch hunt' and spy mania. All this has been a distinctive feature of Washington's political life for several years now. The US authorities are consistently destroying the once pragmatic Russian-American relations and artificially imposing a toxic perception of Russia and everything connected with it on their population," a Russian embassy representative told Sputnik.

The representative of the embassy in Washington added that "Russia does not and has not had any intention of engaging in any kind of destabilizing operations around the world. This is not in line with our foreign policy, national interests, as well as our understanding of how relations between states are built. Russia respects the sovereignty of other countries and does not interfere in their affairs."

The Russian embassy in Canada has also dismissed all allegations concerning Russia’s alleged cyber activity, calling them "absurd and baseless."

Global Affairs Canada and the Communications Security Establishment issued a statement on Monday saying that "Canada is concerned over reports of a series of global malicious cyber activities, as detailed in today’s statements by the United States and the United Kingdom." According to the release, the activities "are examples of the willingness of Russian military intelligence, GRU, to target critical infrastructure and international organizations."

The Russian embassy in Canada said on Twitter on Monday that Ottawa was damaging its relations with Moscow by issuing such groundless statements.

"Another absurd and baseless Canada allegations on Russian 'malicious cyber activity' copycat US-UK intelligence disinformation as part of psychological war against Russia. Ottawa is further damaging Canadian-Russian relations following its Russophobic narrative," the embassy said.

According to the indictment, unveiled on Monday, six alleged Russian military intelligence officers have used "the world’s most destructive malware to date," including NotPetya, which wreaked havoc globally and caused nearly $1 billion in losses to victims identified during the probe.

US authorities alleged that in December of 2015 and 2016, the conspirators launched destructive malware attacks against the electric power grid in Ukraine. In the US, hospitals in Pennsylvania were allegedly attacked with malware. US authorities claimed that the suspects also tried to undermine the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, and attempted to meddle in elections in France, as well as tried to compromise the Georgian parliament network and a major media company in the post-Soviet Republic. The group also allegedly conducted "spearphishing campaigns" against investigations by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the United Kingdom’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory into the Novichok nerve agent poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, according to the indictment.

A source at the Russian Foreign Ministry told Sputnik on Monday that the accusations are groundless, aim to create anti-Russian sentiments, and are addressed to the internal audience within the context of the upcoming presidential election in the United States.

UK dad jailed for sex with family chickens while wife filmed sick display

A British dad will spend three years behind bars for sexually abusing defenceless birds while his wife filmed the ordeal on her mobile phone.

A sick dad was yesterday jailed for three years for having sex with the family’s pet chickens.

Vile Rehan Baig, 37, abused the defenceless birds and romped with his twisted wife, Haleema, 38, at the same time, The Sun reports.

The mum-of-four even filmed it on a mobile phone and a Go-Pro so they could watch it back, a court was told.

Rehan Baig then stored the footage away on his home computer in a folder entitled “family vids”.

Prosecutor Abigail Langford said officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) raided the couple’s West Yorkshire home in July 2019 after a tip-off.

Ms Langford said: “The premises were searched. A large number of exhibits were seized including two computer towers and a mobile telephone.

Those devices were interrogated and a number of indecent images of children were found.

“Also located among the devices interrogated were moving images showing the defendant engaging in penetrative sexual intercourse with a number of chickens.”

She said Haleema Baig was stood nearby while this was happening and was also depicted within those videos.

“Having viewed the videos it is clear they are filmed in the cellar area of the property.

“She is heard to make sexual encouraging remarks towards the defendant and engages in sexual intercourse with him.

“During the course of these incidents she was a willing participant.”

The pair also abused a dog.

Bradford Crown Court was told that each one of the family’s pet chickens died during the horrifying abuse.

In one video Baig even had sex with the dead animal before stuffing one into a black bin liner.

A priest at a Catholic high school was removed from ministry after confessing he had abused a child in 2013. Another priest was arrested after allegedly engaging in sexual acts with two women on the altar of his small-town church. And seven new names were added to the list of clergy credibly accused of child sexual abuse.

All of this happened within two weeks in the New Orleans Archdiocese.

Partly in response to these events, on Oct. 9, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, known as SNAP, wrote a letter to Pope Francis calling for the removal of New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond.

The letter, which SNAP also sent to the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith and the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, D.C., said Aymond has refused to be honest with parishioners, has not pursued accountability for abuse and has "lost control of his priests."

"We implore you to send Vatican investigators to New Orleans so that you may arrive at the same truth for yourself that we already know — Catholics in New Orleans deserve a better leader than Gregory Aymond," the letter said.

Kevin Bourgeois, a SNAP leader in New Orleans, and Zach Hiner, SNAP's executive director, said the archdiocese — which also filed for bankruptcy in May, citing the financial burdens of abuse lawsuits — is experiencing a crisis that will require Vatican and secular intervention to rectify.

"It has been … an absolute debacle of infinite proportions," Bourgeois said.

The sexual abuse crisis in the Archdiocese of New Orleans stretches back decades. With the latest addition — to include members of the Franciscan Friars' order, according to Nola.com — there will be over 70 names on the official list of priests and clergy credibly accused of abusing children.

On Oct. 2, the archdiocese said a priest named Patrick Wattigny confessed to sexually abusing a minor in 2013. Wattigny had resigned from his post as a chaplain at Pope John Paul II High School after a student disclosed texts in February 2020 from Wattigny, which a lawyer for the student's family described as "grooming," according to Nola.com. He had kept his job at a nearby church.

After Wattigny disclosed the 2013 abuse, Aymond said in an Oct. 9 video statement that Wattigny was removed from service and reported to law enforcement. His name has been added to the archdiocesan list of credibly accused priests.

In the statement, Aymond said the archdiocese did not know about the abuse before Oct. 1. He also said the texts disclosed in February between the teenager and Wattigny were "not sexual in nature" but that Wattigny was asked to resign because the texts were a violation of the archdiocese's "technology policy."

"The texts did not indicate abuse, and there was no allegation of sexual abuse," Aymond said in the statement. "I am truly, truly sorry for the pain that this has caused."

On Oct. 5, Nola.com reported that a man named Tim Trahan had accused two priests — Luis Fernandez and the late Robert Cooper — of abusing him when he was a student at a now-closed prep school in New Orleans in the late 1970s. Another man has also accused Fernandez, Nola.com reported.

Aymond, who worked at the prep school while Trahan was a student, helped him and another student get Cooper dismissed from his job at the school after they disclosed that he had sent them sexually suggestive letters, Nola.com reported. But the archbishop told Nola.com there wasn't enough evidence to place Cooper or Fernandez on the list of credibly accused priests.

And on Sept. 30, a priest named Travis Clark was arrested on charges of obscenity after he allegedly engaged in sexual conduct with two women who worked as dominatrixes, on the altar of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Pearl River, Louisiana, according to WWLTV and Nola.com. Clark had also just replaced Wattigny as chaplain at St. John Paul II High School after Wattigny resigned due to the text messages.

Aymond called Clark's actions "demonic" and personally reconsecrated a new altar in the church on Oct. 10 after the old one was removed and burned, Catholic News Service reported. Clark was also removed from ministry, Aymond said in the Oct. 9 video statement.

Suspect Charged In Alleged Plot To Kidnap Michigan Governor Released On Bail

LANSING – The eighth individual charged for his alleged participation in a plan of domestic terrorism that included storming the Michigan Capitol building and harming government officials has been released on bond.

Brian Higgins, 51, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, was charged with material support of an act of terrorism, a 20-year felony. Higgins walked out of the Columbia County Jail in Wisconsin Monday after posting $10,000 bail.

According to WNEM, Harris has to “limit travel to Columbia and Dane Counties. He also has to surrender his passport and is not allowed to have any contact with the co-conspirators.”

It is alleged that Higgins provided assistance in the plan to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer from her vacation home.

The Attorney General’s office charged seven men after the execution of multiple search and arrest warrants Oct. 7 in a joint operation with the U.S. Attorneys of the Eastern and Western districts of Michigan, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Michigan State Police.

“While the political rhetoric in our nation may at times be divisive, I am encouraged by the united front our law enforcement community has displayed in response to this indescribable act of terror,” Nessel said. “These were very credible, and very serious threats to our elected officials and the public in general, and the swift actions taken by state and federal authorities this past week are nothing short of heroic.”

Including this latest charge against Higgins, a total of 20 state felony charges were filed by Attorney General Nessel against eight individuals known to be members of the militia group Wolverine Watchmen or associates of Wolverine Watchmen. Polish bishop resigns following accusations of failing to act on abuse

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis accepted the resignation of a Polish bishop accused of negligence after a documentary claimed he repeatedly transferred a priest accused of sexually abusing children.

The Vatican announced Oct. 17 that the pope accepted the resignation of 68-year-old Bishop Edward Janiak of Kalisz and named Archbishop Grzegorz Rys of Lodz as apostolic administrator "sede vacante."

In June, the Vatican had appointed Archbishop Rys as apostolic administrator "sede plena," indicating that the see was not vacant.

Bishop Janiak's failure to act when told about allegations of abuse perpetrated by a diocesan priest drew a public outcry following the May 16 release of the documentary, "Hide and Seek," produced by Polish filmmakers Marek and Tomasz Sekielski.

The film was a follow-up to their 2019 documentary "Tell No One," which exposed the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church in Poland and has garnered nearly 24 million views on YouTube.

In "Hide and Seek," the filmmakers accused the Polish church of continuing to cover up sexual abuse by Catholic clergy, and specifically detailed the abuse perpetrated by a priest of the Diocese of Kalisz.

Several victims said the priest, Father Arkadiusz Hajdasz, began abusing them in the late 1990s. Bishop Stanislaw Napierala had led the Diocese of Kalisz from 1992 to 2012, and Bishop Janiak since 2012.

The parents of one of the abused children reportedly told Bishop Janiak in 2016 about the abuse; they claim the bishop told them, "These are lies," and asked them to leave.

Father Hajdasz was transferred to position at a local hospital, and the bishop apparently did not report the case to the Vatican until 2018 when the accusations became more publicly known.

The documentary prompted Archbishop Wojciech Polak, primate of Poland and the bishops' delegate for child protection, to request the Vatican to start the proceedings allowed for by Pope Francis in the document, "Vos Estis Lux Mundi" ("You are the light of the world"), regarding bishop accountability.

Jesus warned us that money and faith do not mix very well. And one of the greatest tragedies in the history of Christendom, the Reformation, was sparked in part by disgust at the wealth that had been accumulated by the successors of Peter and the cardinals who advised them. Closer to our own time, we can recall the memory of Chicago-born Archbishop Paul Marcinkus who led the Vatican bank into a series of shady investments and the Banco Ambrosiano scandal, for which the Vatican paid out $244 million to the failed bank's creditors.

So, the allegations of financial malfeasance surrounding Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu are not entirely surprising. Much remains to be learned, but this much is clear already: Pope Francis' reputation before history as a reformer will depend in large part on his ability to confront this scandal head on and use it to uproot the procedures, policies and personalities that made it possible.

The current scandal broke into public view almost a year ago when police raided the Vatican Secretariat of State looking for evidence of financial wrongdoing. Shortly after, the head of the Vatican's "watchdog" agency for financial matters, Rene Brülhart, resigned at the end of his five-year term, in part because the police had also raided his office. Brülhart was considered a straight shooter and so the decision likely raised alarms at international watchdog agencies. The decision to raid Brülhart's office apparently resulted in the resignation of the police chief.

Then, at the beginning of the summer, the Vatican announced the arrest of investor Gianluigi Torzi on charges of extortion, fraud and money laundering after details of a shady real estate deal involving luxury apartments in London came to light. Commenting on that mess earlier this month, the head of the Vatican Secretariat for the Economy, Jesuit Fr. Juan Antonio Guerrero Alves, said the Holy See had been "swindled" by its investors.

The stakes hit the roof, however, last month when Becciu was removed as prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, his rights as a cardinal were stripped from him, and he held a press conference where he filled in some of the details the Vatican press office had not regarding the charges against him. And, last week, a laywoman, Cecilia Marogna, was arrested by Italian police on a Vatican warrant. Marogna's firm apparently received hundreds of thousands of euros from her fellow Sardinian, Becciu.

What a mess! "Things are going to get worse, probably a lot worse, before they get better," a well connected prelate told me about the unfolding financial scandal.

Pope Francis famously does not like to humiliate subordinates publicly. He may find himself forced to do a better job explaining what the investigations he authorized have found and how he plans to confront this recurring corruption. It is hard to see how the corruption can be eradicated without a large infusion of mandatory transparency. There is a reason most decent regimes have adopted financial transparency regulations and support international organizations that help ferret out corruption, money laundering and other fiscal crimes.

The Gospel has a verse that is on point, Matthew 5:15 — "nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house" — but there are other Gospel values at stake, especially for a pope: mercy, non-judgmentalism, compassion. Trying to reform the Vatican must be like living with an alcoholic: You want to be supportive without becoming an enabler, you know you can't trust the veracity of what you are told, and the most loving thing you can do is say "no." Perhaps the Holy Father and his team should start attending Al-Anon.

The Diocese of Lafayette has been named in a lawsuit filed last month by a man who alleges he was molested by Fr. Stanley Begnaud when he was a teen.

The suit identifies the plaintiff and alleged victim as "Sam Doe," but it states that the man has identified himself to the court under seal.

In the lawsuit, which was served on the Diocese last week, the man says he was a teenage member of St. Stephen's Church in Berwick in the early 1960s, at the same time that Fr. Stanley Begnaud was a priest there.

Begnaud is on KATC's List. He was Labeled “a known pedophile” in diocese documents that became part of a lawsuit against their insurance company. No evidence of any lawsuits or criminal charges. Named by the Diocese of Lafayette in 2019 as a priest against whom a credible accusation has been made regarding sexual abuse of a minor or vulnerable adult.

The lawsuit describes in explicit detail an incident that began with the boy confessing impure thoughts in the confessional to Begnaud, and ending with the priest allegedly molesting him during a car ride. The boy bailed out of the moving car and ran home, and surpressed the memories of the incident until last fall, when after years of therapy he remembered, the suit alleges.

The suit additionally alleges that the Charter adopted by the Church and its Bishops in 2002 waives prescription. Usually under Louisiana civil law, a plaintiff has one year from the date of the alleged incident that injured them to file a civil lawsuit against the defendant.

The suit alleges that the diocese knew Begnaud to be "a diseased pedophile" who had raped children, but didn't do anything but transfer him from church to church. The suit accuses the church of failing to remove Begnaud from ministry, and of failing to reach out to his victims. Begnaud retired and enjoyed full benefits until he died, the suit alleges.

The suit also alleges that Bishop Deshotel has issued statements asking victims to come forward, but has denied his claims in private, and kept his claims and those of other Begnaud victims "hidden and concealed."

The suit accuses the diocese of negligence and fraudulent concealment. It also says the diocese had a duty to disclose the acts of sexual abuse by its priests by reporting them to law enforcement or other authority, and didn't do so - even though the diocese allegedly knew about his crimes for more than 25 years. In failing to protect the public from Begnaud, the Diocese in effect created a public nuisance, the suit alleges.

The plaintiff alleges physical and mental damages, including continuing nightmares and psychological damage.

The New Yorker has suspended reporter Jeffrey Toobin for masturbating on a Zoom video chat between members of the New Yorker and WNYC radio last week. Toobin says he did not realize his video was on.

“I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake, believing I was off-camera. I apologize to my wife, family, friends and co-workers,” Toobin told Motherboard.

“I believed I was not visible on Zoom. I thought no one on the Zoom call could see me. I thought I had muted the Zoom video,” he added.

Two people who were on the call told VICE separately that the call was an election simulation featuring many of the New Yorker's biggest stars: Jane Mayer was playing establishment Republicans; Evan Osnos was Joe Biden, Jelani Cobb was establishment Democrats, Masha Gessen played Donald Trump, Andrew Marantz was the far right, Sue Halpern was left wing democrats, Dexter Filkins was the military, and Jeffrey Toobin playing the courts. There were also a handful of other producers on the call from the New Yorker and WNYC.

Both people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to speak freely, noted that it was unclear how much each person saw, but both said that they saw Toobin jerking off. The two sources described a juncture in the election simulation when there was a strategy session, and the Democrats and Republicans went into their respective break out rooms for about 10 minutes. At this point, they said, it seemed like Toobin was on a second video call. The sources said that when the groups returned from their break out rooms, Toobin lowered the camera. The people on the call said they could see Toobin touching his penis. Toobin then left the call. Moments later, he called back in, seemingly unaware of what his colleagues had been able to see, and the simulation continued.

New Yorker spokesperson Natalie Raabe said: “Jeffrey Toobin has been suspended while we investigate the matter.”

Toobin’s Conde Nast email has been disabled and he has not tweeted since October 13. He did, however, appear on CNN, where he is the network’s chief legal analyst, on Saturday. “Jeff Toobin has asked for some time off while he deals with a personal issue, which we have granted,” CNN said in a statement.

The New Yorker editor David Remnick wrote in an email to all New Yorker staffers: “Dear All, As you may have read in various news reports today, one of our writers, Jeff Toobin, was suspended after an incident on a Zoom call last week. Please be assured that we take such matters seriously and that we are looking into it. Best, David.”

Doubleday, an imprint of Random House, which published Toobin’s latest book did not respond to emails. Neither did Toobin’s literary agent Kristine Dahl nor Greater Talent Network, which represents Toobin. WNYC did not respond to a request for comment.

The incident happened during a Zoom meeting, which was described as an "election simulation," featured Toobin's New Yorker colleagues including Jane Mayer, Masha Gessen, Andrew Marantz, Jelani Cobb, Evan Osnos, Sue Halpern, and Dexter Filkins playing various roles in potential 2020 outcomes including President Trump, Joe Biden, "establishment Republicans," 'establishment Democrats," and "the military." Toobin was playing "the courts."

According to two sources, Toobin was seen masturbating in what was supposed to be a 10-minute "strategy session" along party lines, but that it "seemed like Toobin was on a second video call."

The allegations against Toobin are the type of thing that would often result in an outside, independent investigation. It’s unclear if CNN will enlist an outside firm to probe the claims against Toobin.

Colorado's Catholic dioceses pay $6.6 million in abuse settlements

Denver, Colo., Oct 19, 2020 / 12:01 pm MT (CNA).- An independent reparation and reconciliation program for the three dioceses in Colorado announced Friday that $6.68 million had been paid to 73 victims of clerical abuse who were minors at the time the abuse occurred.

The program is administered by Camille Biros and Kenneth Feinberg, independent from control by the Church, and is monitored by an independent board, the Independent Oversight Committee.

The IOC said Oct. 16 that “The administrators and the IOC have received positive feedback from program participants. Many survivors (and their attorneys) have commended the option to seek compensation in a non-adversarial forum independent from the Dioceses and without regard for the statute of limitations.”

The program was accounced in October 2019, and the claims process has now closed.

During the process, 98 claims were made, of which 81 were determined to be eligible for compensation.

The $6.68 million has been paid to 73 victims. Of the remaining eight, one is being paid; four have not yet responded to the compensation offer, and three are awaiting law enforcement notification by the claimants.

Archbishop Samuel Aquila of Denver said Oct. 16 told the victims who participated in the program, “I have met with all of you who requested a meeting in which I could offer an apology to you in person, and will meet with anyone else should you desire to do so. I know others have chosen a different path for healing and I, of course, respect your wishes. Please know, on behalf of myself and the Church, I am deeply sorry for the pain and hurt that was caused by the abuse you suffered.”

“I remain steadfastly committed to meeting with any survivor who desires to meet with me and doing everything I can so that the problems of the past never repeat themselves. I know that money cannot fully heal the wounds you suffered, but hope that those of you who came forward felt heard, acknowledged, and that the reparations offer a measure of justice and access to resources,” he added.

A Los Angeles drug dealer was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without parole in the stabbing death of his wealthy Studio City customer.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michelle Rosenblatt imposed the maximum sentence against Marcus Sartin, 35. He was convicted in March by a Van Nuys jury of first-degree murder, carjacking, robbery and burglary for killing Mitchell Stanman, 41, in September 1999 and stealing his 1999 silver Porsche Boxster and an $18,000 gold Rolex watch.

Sartin’s attorney, Arnold M. Notkoff of Beverly Hills, said he will appeal. Deputy Dist. Atty. Laura Rosenthal prosecuted the case.

Before sentencing, Sartin maintained his innocence while the victim’s family recalled a generous brother whose presence is missed by his three young nephews.

Arthur Stanman acknowledged his brother’s drug addiction, saying he could have made his drug dealer rich, but added “he could light up a room.”

Sartin interrupted Stanman, declaring his innocence, after Stanman called him “an idiot.”

When it was his turn to speak, Sartin, handcuffed and seated at the counsel table, turned to members of the victim’s family behind him, looked them in the eye and said he didn’t kill anyone.

“I’m a lot of things but I’m not a murderer,” he insisted.

Although he did not testify, Sartin has said he drove Stanman’s Porsche for two weeks before Stanman was killed.

“Just because I had that man’s car didn’t mean I murdered him,” he said. “In my line of work, I don’t have to kill for a car.”

Sartin is a convicted drug dealer and twice served time in state prison.

After the hearing, Diane Stanman, the victim’s sister-in-law, said Sartin was lying when he said he was not responsible.

Two years ago, Stanman’s housekeeper discovered his body upstairs in his apartment and called authorities. His room was ransacked and his car and jewelry were missing.

During the trial, Sartin’s girlfriend, Tammie Wilkerson, testified that they went to Stanman’s apartment for a drug deal but Sartin stabbed Stanman to death and stole his car.

Authorities recovered two bloody kitchen knives and found Sartin’s fingerprints in Stanman’s apartment, court records show.

When Jerry Boyle was in high school, he used to walk Windsor’s Ambassador Bridge and drop rocks into the Detroit River. He would count the seconds it took for the stones to hit the water.

“It could end that quick if I wanted it to. Wouldn’t have to look at him again.”

Thirty years later, Patrick McMahon would walk the very same bridge to the very same spot and contemplate the very same thing. Both were sexually assaulted by Father William Hod Marshall, decades apart.

Marshall was a Catholic priest and educator who worked at Catholic high schools across Canada, starting in the 1950s. At the time, the institutions were run or staffed by the Basilian Fathers, a group of priests whose calling is to teach. Their world headquarters is in Toronto.

In a recorded civil deposition, Marshall admitted to sexually assaulting boys at nearly every posting he had.

Marshall pled guilty in 2011 and was convicted of assaulting 17 children at Ontario schools. He was also separately convicted of assaulting two boys in Saskatchewan. Victims and their lawyers believe the actual number of children he preyed on is much higher.

It’s a reality survivors Boyle and McMahon live with each day. Marshall admitted to abusing them both. They were each young teens when they encountered the priest.

“Being the good Catholic, I was praying he’d go away. I was terrified,” says Boyle, who describes his abuse as “hands in every crevice that was on my body.”

To this day, Boyle and his wife sleep in separate beds, because the 79-year-old wakes up swinging punches into the air. Trying to beat back the memory of a priest who still haunts him.

In the Fall of 1954, Boyle entered Grade 10 at Assumption Catholic High School. A Basilian priest, Marshall, coached his high school basketball team.

“He found a victim he thought he could get away with it and he did for two years,” says Boyle, who says he was assaulted in gym showers, empty classrooms, and Marshall’s own bedroom.

“He called it a workout,” says Boyle who also claims other priests at the school walked into Marshall’s bedroom while he was being abused and walked out again.

“I could see it was another priest – I could see the black cassock – I don’t know who it was. [Marshall] said, ‘This room is busy you’ll have to find another one’,” he recalls. Marshall denied this during a 2012 civil trial.

Feeling like he had no one to turn to, the assaults led a young Boyle to contemplate suicide. He would peer over the railing of the Ambassador Bridge, down the street from his high school where he was being abused.

“Who knows how many children had the same experience, in between us and after us.”
