I didn’t see a dig on Dan’s tweet the other day, so here’s what I have WRT the music:

Most know it from Aaron Copland’s music (or ELPs β€œHoedown) for rock fans), where he placed the tune in the β€œHoe-Down” section of the ballet Rodeo. It’s actually not his creation but a march known as β€œBonaparte’s retreat”. The music dates back to the 1800s and was a well-known folk tune played by fiddlers.

I first heard it called this on an album called β€œthe Civil War Collection” by Jim Taylor and have associated it with that time.

I wonder if Dan is either pointing to a retreat by the DS or perhaps at the Civil War period which is linked to the song.

Or, it’s just a song. Curious choice though from my perspective.

Nonprofit foundations laid groundwork for her bid for governor

Stacey Abrams’ name was nowhere to be found on statewide ballots in the 2014 elections. In Georgia’s House District 89, which she had represented since 2007, she didn’t even have an opponent.

 

But Abrams was nonetheless directing a sprawling, well-funded campaign, one that established her as a major political figure in Georgia and beyond.

 

Abrams raised $12.5 million between 2013 and 2016 for two non-profit, tax-exempt foundations she created: Third Sector Development and the Voter Access Institute, public records show. Third Sector ran a voter-registration drive called the New Georgia Project that focused on people of color. Voter Access reached out to what it called "low-propensity" voters, trying to persuade them to cast their ballots.

 

Now, as she tries to become the first African-American woman elected governor of any state, Abrams won't say where the money came from, even though the two foundations paid her, over three years, nearly half a million dollars.

 

The foundations’ work underwhelmed many of Abrams’ fellow Democrats. Their party got just 3 percent more votes for governor in 2014 than in 2010, and turnout among African-American voters declined by more than 2 percentage points.

 

But for Abrams, the registration drive was a success. It introduced her to wealthy progressive activists across the country, some of whom are now spending millions of dollars supporting her gubernatorial campaign. It also led to a fraud investigation by the state Board of Elections, the source of lingering animosity between Abrams and her Republican opponent for governor, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp.

 

RELATED: How voting issues became a big issue in Georgia's governor race

 

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reviewed public tax filings by Abrams’ foundations, her personal financial disclosures, tax returns of organizations that supported her, and records of the Board of Elections investigation. The documents, as well as interviews with Republican and Democratic politicians and operatives, suggest the foundations’ greatest successes lie in creating the infrastructure that undergirds Abrams’ gubernatorial campaign.

 

At least 13 political consultants, fundraisers and other contractors working for Abrams this year have served in similar capacities for her foundations, her political action committee or her legislative campaigns. At least 11 paid members of her campaign staff also worked for Abrams’ other political and non-profit groups. They include Lauren Groh-Wargo, who was Abrams’ top aide on both foundations before becoming her campaign manager.

 

β€œAbsolutely, 100 percent, no doubt,” the foundations set the stage for the campaign, a former Democratic candidate said. Like others, the former candidate spoke on condition of anonymity, citing a fear of political retaliation for what might be perceived as criticism of the party’s nominee.

 

For years, another Democrat said, Abrams made no secret that she planned to run for governor in 2018, β€œso how shocking is it that a politician would set up committees to get money to help get them somewhere?”

 

Federal law does not require tax-exempt foundations like Abrams’ to publicly identify contributors. Nor does the law prohibit disclosure, and many organizations routinely publish donor lists.

 

But the lack of transparency by foundations so closely tied to a prominent politician reinforces public cynicism, ethics advocates said.

 

β€œAre these groups, are these people going to have any influence with, potentially, our next governor?” said Sara Henderson, executive director of Common Cause Georgia, a watchdog group. β€œYou would think turning over at least some of the information would be in her best interest and the voters’ interest.”

 

Abrams’ campaign declined to make her available for an interview. A spokeswoman, Priyanka Mantha, would not comment on Abrams’ reasons for withholding donor names.

 

On Friday, the campaign issued a statement in which Abrams said: β€œI’m proud of New Georgia Project’s efforts to register, advocate for, and mobilize hundreds of thousands of Georgians and successfully combat voter suppression being perpetrated by Secretary of State Brian Kemp.”

Thousands Left Without Heat, Hot Water in Colorado After Vandals Attack Natural Gas Services

 

Local media reports have suggested that an ongoing bid to restore services to thousands of individuals living in the Aspen, Colorado, community has encountered weather-related setbacks due to frigid temperatures and snowfall which are expected to continue throughout Tuesday.

 

Thousands of Coloradans have been left between a rock and a hard place for several days after local law enforcement officials revealed vandalism at three natural gas energy stations had hindered services to customers.

 

Local natural gas provider Black Hills Energy revealed over the weekend that a coordinated, vandalistic attack took place against three of its sites on Sunday, and that approximately 3,500 users were forced to go without heat or hot water until technicians could return services.

 

Citing Bill Linn, Aspen’s assistant police chief, the Aspen Times reported that the culprits may have ties to the environmental advocacy organization Earth First! since the group’s name was found on one of the damaged pipes.

 

However, it’s worth noting that the group has not taken responsibility for the vandalism, and law enforcement officials have not received any communication from the group in regards to the damages.

 

Although officials did retrieve evidence from the scenes, such as at least one footprint, none of the three Black Hills Energy locations had security cameras installed.

 

Linn further explained the vandals β€œwould have had to have some familiarity with [Black Hills Energy’s] system” in order to pull off the scheme. He added, β€œThey tampered with flow lines. They turned off gas lines.”

 

Vance Crocker, the vice president of operations for Black Hills Energy Colorado, said in a Monday statement that bringing the thousands of affected customers back onto the network would take β€œseveral steps.”

 

β€œWe must first make sure all gas meters are off, then purge the system so it’s ready for the reintroduction of the natural gas supply,” Crocker stated, before adding that dozens of technicians would then have to go door-to-door to β€œrelight each customer’s gas appliances.”

 

In a Tuesday morning update, Black Hills Energy revealed that officials were able to complete the initial steps of purging and repressurizing its system and had begun to relight appliances for the β€œmost critical customers.”

 

Despite the positive developments, concerns are rising over the incoming snowfall and cold temperatures that are expected to stay in the area over the next couple of days. Forecasts by the National Weather Service indicate Aspen has a 50% chance of snow showers on Tuesday, with a high temperature of 28 degrees Fahrenheit. At nightfall, temperatures are expected to dip as low as 2 degrees Fahrenheit.

 

Patti Clapper, the commissioner of Pitkin County who was affected by the outage, described the Sunday incident to the Aspen Times as β€œan act of terrorism.”

 

β€œIt’s trying to destroy a mountain community at the height of the holiday season. This wasn’t a national gas glitch. This was a purposeful act,” Clapper said. β€œSomeone is looking to make a statement of some kind.”

 

Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo, on the other hand, steered away from labeling the incident as an attack, explaining that he saw the setback as more of β€œan intentional act” aimed at disrupting gas service.

 

A multi-jurisdictional investigation to determine who is responsible for the vandalism is ongoing and being conducted by the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, the Aspen Police Department and the FBI.
