Driver Out on Bail for Alleged Attempted Murder Drags NYPD Officer with Car

A New York City driver who was out on bail for allegedly committing attempted murder was caught dragging a police officer with his car Friday, according to a video. The video, released by the New York Police Department (NYPD), showed the officer conducting a routine traffic stop. When the officers determined the driver was unfit to operate a motor vehicle, they asked him to step out of the vehicle. At that point, the suspect placed the car in reverse, running over the officer who stopped him, according to the video. The suspect, identified as Takim Newson, was driving in Brooklyn when the NYPD stopped him for being double-parked and having tinted windows, the police told Fox News. The NYPD said Newson (pictured) was slurring his speech and admitted to smoking marijuana before the officers stopped him. The officer suffered minor injuries, including bumps and bruises on his legs and back pain. He received treatment at a local hospital and was then released. The 32-year-old suspect then allegedly broke into a Queens home and threatened a 66-year-old woman by pretending he was armed. After the alleged burglary, Newson then carjacked a Jaguar sedan, police said. Police later arrested him in Suffolk County, Long Island, after the stolen car’s license plates triggered a license plate reader, the New York Post reported.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Newson also faces charges of burglary and assault on a police officer, police said. Newson was arrested this month on attempted murder charges at his mother’s home in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, after he fled New York City for allegedly attempting to rob a bar and shoot a person in the groin on Valentine’s Day. Prosecutors ordered that he be held in custody pending trial, but a judge released him without bond despite Newson’s lawyer requesting a $50,000 bond.

LSU Fraternity Brothers Pay Off Former House Cook’s Mortgage for 74th Birthday

Fraternity brothers at Louisiana State University (LSU) have always had fond memories of their fraternity house cook, so when they realized she was working two jobs to pay off her home mortgage, they decided to pay it forward. Phi Gamma Delta alumni realized their former cook, Jessie Hamilton, was working two jobs to pay off her home mortgage and decided to do something to help. The fraternity brothers surprised her with $51,765 in time for her 74th birthday in an April 3 celebration they called “Jesse Hamilton Day,” the Advocate reported.

“They were my kids. They still are,” Hamilton told the Washington Post. “They used to tell me they loved me, and now, they’ve proved it.” During her time at the fraternity house between 1982 and 1996, Hamilton, a single mother of three, would begin her day at 4:00 a.m. to make it to campus in time to serve the boys breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She was also there to listen whenever one of the boys wanted to talk and made herself available to take them to the grocery store or to doctor’s appointments. “I enjoyed doing it. They loved my cooking,” Hamilton told the Post. “I was always there to talk things through with them. They’d come in the kitchen and sit on top of the counter and tell me their problems.” Hamilton stayed in touch with several of the brothers over the years, including Andrew Fusaiotti, 52. Fusaiotti, who owns a car dealership in Mobile, Alabama, checked in on Hamilton at the start of the pandemic and was disappointed to hear she was still working two jobs — one as a cook at a country club and one as a cleaner at the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport.

Speaking with her children, he found out she had 16 years to go on a 30-year mortgage and needed to pay off the $45,000 balance. Soon, Fusaiotti got his fraternity brothers on board and got 91 of them to donate an average of $560. Fusaiotti and his brothers gave Hamilton a check to cover the mortgage, as well as a second check for $6,675 for personal expenses.“This has been a blessing to me,” Hamilton told the Advocate. “I have been worrying about how I was going to pay my house off. I am grateful for what God has done and has led them to do for me.”

"I think we're living in the twilight zone," Tatum said of the Chauvin trial. "This conviction, in my personal opinion, did nothing for our country. People are living a lie. He was tried. 10 hours of deliberation, he was convicted. I'm not really sure why people are acting like this is monumental.

"This is not a landmark case, this is a political agenda," Tatum shot back. They're pushing laws in our country. Policing in America is not inherently racist. We don't live in a racist country. This was an interaction between a police officer that I thought did the wrong thing, and a black man who was on drugs high, resisting arrest, and ended up being killed by that police officer. That's as simple as it can be. The President of the United States got out and made a fool of himself trying to promote racism in a simple police encounter that the officer got convicted on.

Dozens Arrested After CEO Of Turkish Crypto Exchange Flees With $2 Billion

Turkish authorities have detained 62 people over alleged links to the Istanbul-based cryptocurrency exchange Thodex after its founder fled with a reported $2 billion in investors' assets, Turkish media reported. The suspects were apprehended in raids carried out in eight cities including Istanbul, Anadolu Agency reported on Friday. Police issued arrest warrants for 16 other people.

The arrests come after nearly 400,000 users of a Turkish cryptocurrency exchange were left out of their accounts without being able to withdraw their funds. The platform’s website has been down for several days, while reports suggest its CEO has already fled the country with up to $2 billion.

Bloomberg reported that Thodex, a Turkey-based crypto exchange, has ceased trading, citing an “unspecified partnership transaction.” The trading platform, founded in 2017, issued a statement explaining that all services will remain shut down for about five working days. However, the message reassured customers that they shouldn’t worry about their funds. In retrospect, they should.

Approximately at the same time, though, users started to complain about their inability to access their own assets. As Crypto Potato notes, some took it to Twitter to complain about losing much of their net worth.

He wasn't alone: on Thursday, hundreds of thousands of users were unable to get access to their digital wallets.

"We have started the legal procedures and lodged a complaint at the prosecutor's office," a lawyer for some investors said. Prosecutors were investigating the businessman on charges of "aggravated fraud and founding a criminal organisation".

Montana becomes Second Amendment sanctuary

Montana has barred state and local law enforcement from enforcing federal restrictions on firearms, making it the latest in a slew of Republican-controlled states to adopt Second Amendment protections.

Greg Gianforte, the state’s Republican governor, signed the bill on Friday, which bans the enforcement of federal bans on firearms, magazines, or ammunition. The bill applies retroactively to Jan. 1, 2021, a period that covers all of President Joe Biden’s term in office.

Similar bills were vetoed by former Gov. Steve Bullock, a Democrat, in 2013, 2015, and 2017. Republicans gained control of every statewide office after the November election and held its existing majorities in the Montana House of Representatives and state Senate after the 2020 elections, wins that paved the way for this bill to be made into law.

Biden has promised an ambitious gun control agenda, and states across the country have approved Second Amendment sanctuary laws in an effort to preempt any federal gun control legislation or rulemaking.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey signed a similar bill in early April prohibiting law enforcement in his state from enforcing federal gun laws that are inconsistent with existing state law. The Utah Senate has also given its approval to a similar statute. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said that gun sanctuary legislation would be coming to his state imminently.

Arizona lawmakers passed a law prohibiting state and local law enforcement officials from enforcing federal gun laws that are inconsistent with state law ahead of President Joe Biden unveiling his administration's gun control measures.

Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, signed the Second Amendment Firearm Freedom Act on Tuesday, as protesters from Moms Demand Action, a group bankrolled by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, gathered outside to protest.

“There is a lot of discussion out of Washington about congressional action around the Second Amendment, and this law was simply to protect the rights we already enjoy in Arizona,” Ducey said, advocating for the state to instead enforce existing laws.

Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone warned that the Second Amendment Firearm Freedom Act would create “confusion or challenges” for local police and sheriffs tasked with enforcing the law.

“You could make the easy argument saying it’s a state practice — the person has a right to bear arms, therefore, you’re in conflict with that,” Penzone warned last Thursday. “Now, you’re putting officers or deputies in this position, where they’re questioning whether or not some other entity will determine if it’s in conflict with the Second Amendment, therefore, do we act on it? And that’s where it creates problems.”

Several states have considered similar measures to the one taken by legislators in Arizona. The Missouri House in February passed a measure that, if enacted, would allow individuals to sue local police agencies for enforcing federal gun laws. The Utah state Senate is considering a bill that would prohibit state and local agencies from enforcing federal gun statutes.
