Valisure, a pharmacy dedicated to batch testing medications before they reach consumers, found in a recent test that 78 different sunscreen and after-sun care products contained benzene, a potential carcinogen.

According to the U. S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and various other regulatory agencies, benzene is known to cause cancer in humans. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) also defines benzene as a carcinogen and exposure can include “inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, and skin and/or eye contact.”

In the laboratory test conducted by Valisure, 294 unique batches of sun care products from 69 different companies were examined.

Results of the test found 27% of samples tested contained detectable benzene, while some batches contained up to 3 times the FDA concentration limit of 2 parts per million (ppm). With the benzene-detected product batches ranging from gels, sprays, and lotions in both mineral and chemical formulations.

“There is not a safe level of benzene that can exist in sunscreen products,” said Christopher Bunick, MD, PhD, associate professor of dermatology at Yale University and member of Dermatology Times®’ editorial advisory board. “Even benzene at 0.1 ppm in a sunscreen could expose people to excessively high nanogram amounts of benzene.”

Health officials say a dog brought to the U.S. from Azerbaijan that ended up with a family in Chester County, Pennsylvania began acting strangely. It later tested positive for rabies and was euthanized. At least 12 people were exposed to the animal.

The dog was one of 34 animals — 33 dogs and one cat — imported by an animal rescue organization from Azerbaijan to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago on June 10.

This week, the CDC announced that starting July 14 it will impose a year-long ban on dogs from more than 100 countries — including Azerbaijan — where rabies is still a problem. The ban is being imposed because of a spike in the number of puppies denied entry because they weren’t old enough to be fully vaccinated.

Army CID special agents are investigating the death of a colonel who was found unresponsive in his office Tuesday morning and pronounced dead, according to a statement from his command.

Col. Scott Green, director of the Army’s Command and General Staff School, was found unresponsive in his office at the Lewis and Clark Center on Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

Green was a 49-year-old career infantry officer. He had held company command in the 75th Ranger Regiment and led an Airborne brigade combat team during his 27-year career.

Green was a highly decorated combat veteran with multiple tours that included a combat parachute jump, the statement added.
