Vancouver-based fusion energy company General Fusion has entered an agreement with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority to build a nuclear fusion demonstration plant to be operational in 2025. It will take a unique approach to generating clean energy.

 

There is an industry joke that fusion energy has been 20 years away for 50 years. The quest to produce clean energy by duplicating the processes happening at the centre of the sun has been a difficult and expensive challenge.

 

It has yet to be accomplished on anything like a commercial scale. That is partly because on Earth the fusion process involves handling materials at extreme pressures and temperatures many times hotter than the surface of the sun.

 

The nuclear technology that has provided electricity for decades around the world relies on fission, which splits heavy atoms such as uranium into lighter elements, releasing energy. However, this produces hazardous and durable radioactive waste that must be stored, and more catastrophically has led to major accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima.

 

Fusion is the opposite of fission. Lighter elements such as hydrogen are heated and compressed to fuse into heavier ones. This releases energy, but with a much smaller legacy of radioactive waste, and no risk of meltdown.

 

The world's largest fusion reactor experiment,ITER (Latin for "the way")is currently under construction in southern France. It's a massive international collaboration developing on fusion technology that's been been explored since it was invented in the Soviet Union in the 1950s. It involves a doughnut-shaped metallic chamber called a tokamak that is surrounded by incredibly powerful superconducting magnets.

 

An electrically charged gas, or plasma, will be injected into the chamber where the magnets hold it, compressed and suspended, so it does not touch the walls and burn through them. The plasma will be heated to the unbelievable temperature of 150 million C, when fusion begins to take place.

 

And therein lies the problem. So far, experimental fusion reactors have required more energy to heat the plasma to start the fusion reaction than can be harvested from the reaction itself. Size is part of the problem. Demonstration reactors are small and meant to test equipment and materials, not produce power.ITERis supposed to be large enough to produce 10 times as much power as is required to heat up its plasma.

 

Note that Canada is building this in the UK. International cooperation and it binds the UK closer to North America just as Trump claimed that BRExit would lead to.

Former Obama administration Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Tuesday on CNN’s β€œOutFront” that Americans who have not received a coronavirus vaccine should not be allowed to work or have access to children and be limited on where they are allowed to go.

 

Sebelius said, β€œWe’re in a situation where we have a wildly effective vaccine, multiple choices, lots available, free of charge, and we have folks who are just saying I won’t do it. I think that it’s time to say to those folks, it’s fine if you don’t choose to get vaccinated. You may not come to work. You may not have access to a situation where you’re going to put my grandchildren in jeopardy. Where you might kill them, or you might put them in a situation where they’re going to carry the virus to someone in a high-risk position.”

 

She continued, β€œThat’s, I think the point where we are, is freedom is one thing, but freedom when you harm others like secondhand smoke and issues that we’ve dealt with very clearly in the past you can’t drive drunk. You can drink, but you can’t drive drunk because you can injure other people. You can’t smoke inside of a public place where you can give cancer to someone else in spite of their never having been a smoker.”

 

Sebelius added, β€œSo I think we’re reaching that point in the United States where those of us who are vaccinated, I want to take off my mask. I want to be able to live my life with vaccination, and right now, I’m being impinged on by people who say I don’t want to get vaccinated. It’s fine. I want them to maybe have a limitation on where they can go and who they can possibly infect.”

A shooting civil war would be almost too horrible to contemplate, but it is not outside the realm of possibility. Arizona and Texas state governments are likely to conclude that Trump won and Biden's team broke many, many laws in the process of cheating. I don't know any state government that would be willing to risk a civil war to hold up the pretense that Biden won. Perhaps New York would try. California seems to be a basket case; they couldn't lead a civil war because they have too many heroin addicts defecating on public sidewalks.

 

There are many Chinese and other foreign billionaires who prefer Biden, and perhaps some American-born billionaires who value their connections to Communist China more than they value the land of their birth. No doubt there are many bureaucrats who want to believe Biden won, and they will argue that until the day they die. How many federal agents would stand with Biden? UK detectives make record Β£180 million cryptocurrency seizure

Operation against suspected money laundering network comes as former surveillance chief warns of surge in ransomware demands

 

Detectives have made the UK’s largest cryptocurrency seizure worth nearly Β£180 million ($249m) during an investigation into an international money laundering ring.

It was connected to the seizure last month of cryptocurrencies worth Β£114 million – the previous record – by the same London force.

The Metropolitan Police declined to say which currency was seized and how the funds were believed to have been accrued. A woman, 39, has been arrested and bailed in connection with both seizures.

Graham McNulty, a senior police officer at the Metropolitan Police, said: β€œWhile cash still remains king in the criminal word, as digital platforms develop we’re increasingly seeing organised criminals using cryptocurrency to launder their dirty money.”

The seizures come amid heightened concerns over an explosion in cybercrime during the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly a form targeting businesses known as ransomware.

Ransomware blocks organisations’ access to vital files until they pay a fee to criminals to unlock them – usually in Bitcoin because of the difficulty in tracing ownership and the money trail.

The scale of the demands have rocketed with companies on the hook for tens of millions of pounds even after negotiating with criminal gangs, according to a former head of the UK’s surveillance agency GCHQ.

Robert Hannigan, who led the agency from 2014 to 2017, told a cybersecurity conference on Tuesday that large companies were prepared to pay up because the cost of disruption far outstripped the cost of the ransom.

There has been a small tidal wave of ransomware over the past 18 months.

β€œThere has been a small tidal wave of ransomware over the past 18 months,” he told the online Infosecurity Europe conference. β€œIt was there long before the pandemic but it’s certainly on steroids now across every continent.

β€œThe big change even in the last five years has been the scale of the ransomware demands,” said the cybersecurity expert.

β€œI regularly deal now with cases where the demands are in the tens of millions and even after a negotiation they are still in the tens of millions, maybe the lower tens.

β€œBut these are very significant amounts of money and everybody is uncomfortable about this money being shovelled into the criminal world.”

A former head of Britain’s cyber intelligence unit said companies should be banned by law from paying ransoms to criminal gangs that attack their computer systems.

Ciaran Martin, formerly chief executive of the National Cyber Security Centre, said the battle between authorities and gangs was heavily weighted in favour of the criminals, who were securing high returns for ransomware attacks with little risk.

The global cost of ransomware damage is expected to hit $20 billion this year and reach $265 billion by 2031, according to researcher and publisher Cybersecurity Ventures.

The criminal market is believed to be dominated by gangs from Russia who are out of reach of US law enforcement.

Mr Hannigan said the coding of ransomware meant it would not affect machines in some 16 countries, including many in the Russian sphere of influence. He said the gangs were not necessarily state-run operations but some countries were β€œtolerating and sometimes benefitting” from the tidal wave of attacks.

For example, a batch containing 59 actual ballot images for Joe Biden, 42 for Donald Trump and 0 for Jo Jorgenson was reported as 100 for Biden and 0 for Trump.

 

The seven batches of ballot images with 554 votes for Joe Biden, 140 votes for Donald Trump and 11 votes for Jo Jorgenson had tally sheets in the audit falsified to show 850 votes for Biden, 0 votes for Trump and 0 votes for Jorgenson.

Using ballot images from Fulton County that were made public after Favorito and the other petitioners won a court order on April 13, the team now claims to reveal astounding error rates and falsified audit tally sheets, among other irregularities.

I've thought about the lucifer question a bit, and since you asked I'll say this in a way that should be entirely accurate from a Christian perspective.

 

  1. The only way to answer your questions about lucifer are through the grace of God. In other words, only those chosen by God somehow to experience Grace will Know, and everyone else will have to make do with answers from books or pastors or whatever. This means other people's answers will never be conclusive for you, and should you recieve the answers, your answers will not satisfy most other people.

 

  1. You cannot earn the Grace of God through actions. You have to be chosen.

 

So until God gives you the answer, which may not happen, you won't know for sure, and although I could suggest some answers from other traditions, you would still have doubts.

 

Also, for what it's worth, I will say that the answers from other traditions would only make you more uncomfortable about the entire thing, they most likely wouldn't make you happy unless you're a very open-minded sort of Christian, and that wouldn't be helping you at all. It would just be adding subtle anxiety.

In this essay, Carl Schmitt starts a reflection on the geographical, historical and legal evolution of our planet, starting from the thesis according to which the history of the world would be the history of powers of the sea against those of land and vice versa. Disney’s Brand Protector and Power Behind the Power Is Stepping Down

For almost two decades, Zenia B. Mucha has been responsible for protecting the vaunted Disney brand and has held influence far beyond her official duties.

LOS ANGELES β€” Forget the looming retirement of Robert A. Iger, the Walt Disney Company’s longtime alpha, and whether his successor, Bob Chapek, has what it takes to continue Disney’s spectacular run.

The real question involving Disney’s senior leadership team is: Who will replace the departing Zenia B. Mucha, the power behind the power?

For 19 years, Ms. Mucha has been uniquely responsible for protecting and polishing the vaunted Disney brand. As the company’s combative chief communications officer, Ms. Mucha (pronounced MOO-kah) commands a 500-person global media relations team; rides herd on the company’s philanthropic and environmental initiatives; and oversees the Walt Disney Archives and D23, a Disney fan club of her creation that has more than one million active members.

On Tuesday, Ms. Mucha, 65, announced that she would not renew her lucrative contract ($4.9 million in total 2020 compensation) and would leave Disney early next year.

Ms. Mucha β€” who has been variously described during her career in politics and at Disney as β€œwarrior princess,” β€œrazor-sharp and acid-tongued,” β€œmother crocodile” and β€œdirector of revenge” β€” has influence at Disney that extends far beyond her official duties. As other C-suite executives have cycled through the company over the decades, Ms. Mucha has endured to become leadership team bedrock, giving her a voice in nearly every major corporate decision. In 2016, for instance, when Disney was thinking about buying Twitter, she was against it. (Too much porn, she cautioned.) Mr. Iger passed, later citing the platform’s β€œnastiness.”

Lately, Ms. Mucha’s job has taken on a difficult new dimension. Disney’s family-friendly brand is meant to be for everyone. But neutrality in today’s hyperpartisan world is almost impossible. Many employees and customers want and expect companies like Disney to be advocates for progressive issues. Another faction is just as adamant that Mickey Mouse and Buzz Lightyear steer clear of politics and hot-button cultural topics.

Walking that line β€” while protecting Disney at all costs β€” has forced Ms. Mucha to make decisions that have, more and more, cast her as a villain. Disney, for instance, did not comment in April when Hollywood stars and some other media companies publicly condemned Georgia Republicans for passing a law to restrict voting access. For Disney in that moment, she determined that the negatives of commenting outweighed the positives. In other instances, she has made the opposite call, adding Disney’s voice in support of issues such as L.G.B.T.Q. rights and racial justice.

β€œFor many of us, the challenges of living and working in an era of lockdowns and quarantines brought an unexpected hidden blessing: the opportunity to gain new perspective about what’s truly β€˜essential,’ what matters most, and how we each want to move forward in light of these insights,” she said in an internal memo that was viewed by The New York Times. β€œAfter a long career in roles that have required a 24/7 commitment, what I want most these days is the freedom to focus on other priorities β€” all the things I always wanted to do with family and friends but simply never had time for.”

Disney has started a search for a successor. Although Ms. Mucha has strong lieutenants β€” one is Paul Roeder, who started in 2001 as Ms. Mucha’s assistant and now runs communications at Walt Disney Studios β€” there are no obvious internal candidates.

β€œI see her as one of the great navigators who no longer needs to study a map,” the ABC News journalist Diane Sawyer said in a telephone interview. β€œShe can rocket to the center of an issue and help you see it with total clarity.”

Ms. Mucha was born to Ukrainian parents in a village in northern Poland and lived in a house without plumbing until she was 9. In 1965, her family immigrated to New York City, where her father became a gravedigger at Green-Wood Cemetery (and later a groundskeeper) and her mother was a night custodian at the United Nations. In her late teens, Ms. Mucha started her public relations career at Gimbels department store.

She can be a confounding mix of extremes.

When reporters write stories that she thinks are unfair, she comes spinning at them like teeth on a chain saw. Some journalists, in particular those in the Hollywood trade press, complain that she can be a punitive tyrant. Threats to cut off access for future articles pepper her tirades. β€œShe barks. She bites,” a 2000 newspaper profile of her began.

In the next breath, however, Ms. Mucha can turn gentle, offering (insisting, demanding) to have jars of her homemade chicken noodle soup sent to your home if she detects a cold coming on. Some of her closest friends are reporters who interacted with her β€” and have the scars to prove it β€” during her pre-Disney political communications career.

After Gimbels, she worked for Alfonse D’Amato, the former Republican senator from New York, and later served as the director of communications and senior policy adviser for Gov. George E. Pataki of New York, also a Republican. Ms. Mucha became the communications chief at ABC in 2001 and ascended to Disney the next year, working for Michael D. Eisner, who was chief executive until 2005.

One of the biggest challenges of her tenure came in 2004 when Comcast made a hostile takeover bid for Disney. At the time, Ms. Mucha was using a wheelchair after shattering her ankle in an accident. She was simultaneously dealing with a theme park death; an employee dressed as Pluto had been killed by a parade float.

β€œWhat I always got from her was brutal honesty, which is extraordinarily valuable,” Mr. Iger said in an interview. β€œYou want someone who never cowers in the face of power or in the face of a powerful C.E.O. I didn’t always agree with her. We often argued. But the results speak for themselves.”

He added: β€œShe is unrivaled in times of crisis, certainly. However, when we had good news to announce, she was wonderfully strategic on that, too.”

Ms. Mucha declined an interview request and tried to persuade a reporter not to write this article at all, arguing that her departure was not significant news. She was undoubtedly mindful of the fact that a story would add to a ticklish narrative: A notable number of important Disney executives are following Mr. Iger out the door.

They include Alan N. Braverman, Disney’s top lawyer, who also announced his retirement on Tuesday; Mr. Braverman, 74, has been general counsel since 2003. The leaders of Disney’s art-film division decamped last month. So did Disney’s human resources chief.

In an internal email of their own on Tuesday, Mr. Chapek and Mr. Iger jointly praised Mr. Braverman and Ms. Mucha for playing a β€œpivotal role” in the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and certain 21st Century Fox assets. They also cited the opening of Disney’s first theme park on the Chinese mainland. Rather miraculously, the Shanghai Disney Resort debuted in 2016 without a hitch β€” though it coincided with a tragedy in Florida, when a toddler at Walt Disney World was dragged into the water by an alligator and drowned, requiring Ms. Mucha to work around the clock to manage two major stories on two sides of the world.

As Disney has grown into the world’s largest entertainment company, with 203,000 employees, 14 theme parks (combined annual attendance: 156 million), four cruise ships, six movie studios and a dozen major TV networks, Ms. Mucha’s ability to control leaks of internal information has lessened. The rise of social media has been a boon, allowing Disney to directly communicate with hundreds of millions of followers, but it has also made it harder for her to wield access as a cudgel.

In 2017, Ms. Mucha barred The Los Angeles Times from press screenings of Disney movies after an investigation by the newspaper into the media giant’s business dealings in Anaheim, Calif. The move prompted swift blowback on Twitter, however, and Disney reversed itself. (Disney cited β€œproductive conversations” with the newspaper’s leaders as its reason for restoring access.)

But Ms. Mucha continues to exert absolute control over one thing: whether Mr. Iger should ever be photographed wearing Mickey Mouse ears, an image that she fears media outlets could use to make him look silly.
