After Robert Reeder was arrested in February and charged with four misdemeanors for his involvement in the Capitol protest on January 6, he lost his job as a truck driver for FedEx. β€œAs a result of his arrest in this matter, he has been placed on administrative leave/has been terminated,” Reeder’s attorney wrote in court filing. β€œHe has not been able to secure steady employment since being charged in this matter.”

 

Reeder, like many Americans who attended Donald Trump’s speech then walked to Capitol Hill, went alone. He is a registered Democrat but supported some of Trump’s policies. The Maryland resident decided to travel to Washington on the morning of January 6, a β€œspur of the moment” decision, according to his attorney.

 

After suffering the effects of tear gas and sting balls launched by police officers outside the buildingβ€”a reality the news media still refuses to coverβ€”Reeder went inside the building to look for water to rinse his eyes. From all accounts, he was allowed into the building. While inside, Reeder marveled at the beauty of the Capitol and urged others β€œdo not destroy anything.” He asked police how he could get out of the building as the situation between law enforcement and protesters escalated.

 

Reeder took selfies and videos of his experience. β€œI’m leaving now . . . I got tear gassed at least four times inside the Capitol . . . I saw the lady they say got shot, I walked right past her in a pool of blood,” he said in one video. β€œAnd it’s just . . . completely crazy in there.” After he entered a second timeβ€”police were not allowing protesters to exit the grounds so Reeder was looking for a way out through the buildingβ€”he said in another post that he was β€œgassed several times . . . and shot with pepper balls.”

 

Although Reeder has no criminal record and prosecutors admit he did not commit any violent crime on January 6, Biden’s Justice Department wants Reeder to go to jail for two months. He pleaded guilty to one count of β€œparading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol Building,” a common low-level charge levied against hundreds of Americans who entered the Capitol building on January 6. Prosecutors want to make an example of Reeder despite the fact he essentially turned himself in to law enforcement and quickly negotiated a plea arrangement.

* 52 percent of likely U.S. voters believe Biden is not β€œphysically and mentally up to the job of being President of the United States”;

* 41 percent say they are β€œNot at all confident” in Biden’s ability to do the job, with 11 percent saying they are β€œnot very confident”;

* Only 32 percent said they were β€œvery confident” that Biden has the ability to do the job of President.

 

Even more concerning is America’s belief that the President is not even involved in the decision making process:

 

* Just 39 percent say Joe Biden is doing the job of President;

* 51 percent say others are β€œmaking decisions for him behind the scenes”;

* Over 1 in 5 Democrat voters believe Joe Biden is not making his own decisions.

This week, the Biden administration strongly recommended booster shots for most vaccinated Americans, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also released three studies that federal officials said provided evidence that booster shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna coronavirus vaccines would be needed in the coming months.

 

Here’s what we know about booster shots β€” why Americans may need them and when they should get them:

The case for a booster shot

Taken together, the C.D.C. studies show that although the vaccines remain highly effective against hospitalizations and deaths, the bulwark they provide against infection with the virus has weakened in the past few months.

The finding accords with early data from seven states, gathered this week by The New York Times, suggesting a rise in breakthrough infections and a smaller increase in hospitalizations among the vaccinated as the Delta variant spread in July.

The decline in effectiveness against infection may result from waning vaccine immunity, a lapse in precautions like wearing masks or the rise of the highly contagious Delta variant, experts said β€” or a combination of all three.

The new studies indicate overall that vaccines have an effectiveness of roughly 55 percent against all infections, 80 percent against symptomatic infection, and 90 percent or higher against hospitalization, noted Ellie Murray, an epidemiologist at Boston University.

 

Who should get a booster shot and when?

Americans who received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna coronavirus vaccines should get a booster shot eight months after their second vaccine dose, federal health officials said.

The boosters will be available beginning Sept. 20, if the Food and Drug Administration agrees to the plan. They will go first to health care workers, nursing home residents and older adults, who were the first to receive the initial round of vaccinations after they were authorized in December.

At this time, Federal health officials are still waiting to see if boosters will be recommended for those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine β€” they most likely will. But less data is available on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which was not authorized until the end of February, two months after the mRNA vaccines. (The Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses a modified adenovirus to deliver its instructions to human cells.)

The F.D.A. has already authorized third doses of Pfizer-BioNTech’s and Moderna’s coronavirus vaccines for some people with weakened immune systems. The authorities decided those individuals, who make up fewer than 3 percent of Americans, merited extra shots because many fail to respond to the standard dosage. Those eligible include people who received solid organ transplants and others with similarly compromised immune systems, the agency said.
