Let's assume that this world was created by a creative force or by a god if you like. Then this force existed from the beginning of the earth. I wonder why some people think that the Bible, the Torah or the Koran are God's word. Did he, or it, not speak to people or give signs before that? There are many ancient religions, some of which still exist today. For example, the Hindus in India.

There are certainly religions that are even older; of which we know nothing more.

I think that we are drops in the sea of divinity and this divinity is actually in us.

Religions have always been just a way to understand why we are here, or they have been used to oppress us.

Our ancestors did not need churches and temples to connect with the divine. They knew that they were one with creation and that death was not a threat. They fought fearlessly and without fear because death was not the end.

We should do the same. So be it.

"Nearly two years after former President Donald Trump tossed politics into the nation’s battle against the coronavirus, the partisan divide appears to have grown, with Republicans fighting mandates and Democrats calling for harsh punishments for those who refuse to get vaccinated.

In an expanded survey of the public’s view of mandates and punishments to get people vaccinated, Rasmussen Reports found that Democrats even support fines, home confinement, and prison for those who fight the government on masks and shots."

Authorities northeast of Fort Worth are negotiating with a man who has apparently taken people hostage at a Colleyville synagogue during services. It is unclear if anyone is injured and how the man may be armed. The service was being livestreamed on Facebook, and the live recording has continued to capture muffled audio of what sounds like negotiations with police. Colleyville police said it is conducting SWAT operations in the 6100 block of Pleasant Run Road, the location of Congregation Beth Israel.

All residents in the immediate area are being evacuated, and people are asked to avoid the area. Commenters on a Facebook livestream of a service at the synagogue say a man there is holding people hostage. An angry man can be heard ranting on the ongoing livestream, at times talking about religion. The video does not show what is happening in the building.

The man has repeatedly mentioned his sister and Islam and used profanities. At one point, another voice can be heard apparently talking on the phone to police. The man has said a few times he didn’t want anyone hurt, and he has mentioned his children. He also said repeatedly he believes he is going to die. It’s unclear how many people are in the synagogue. Commenters on the livestream are offering prayers for Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker. More than 8,000 viewers are watching the livestream. Shabbat morning service began at 10 a.m. Saturday, according to the synagogue’s calendar. Colleyville is about 17 miles northeast of downtown Fort Worth.

Gov. Ralph Northam has pardoned Sen. Joe Morrissey, D-Richmond, for a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor related to his relationship with a 17-year-old law firm assistant who later became his wife.

Morrissey, then a delegate, was convicted in 2014. He and his wife, Myrna, are now raising four children.

Morrissey said he learned of the pardon on Thursday. Northam granted him what’s called a simple pardon.

“To say that I was extremely pleased with what the governor did would be, perhaps for me, the understatement of the 2022 General Assembly session,” he said.

“Most importantly, my wife is grateful,” he said.

And although their young children don’t understand a pardon yet, they’ll be grateful someday for the governor’s action, Morrissey said.

Sen. Scott Surovell, D-Fairfax, was Morrissey’s attorney in his pardon request.

“A simple pardon doesn’t change any legal consequences associated with a conviction, but I think in a lot of ways it serves as a sort of validation that somebody moved on from the situation that led to the crime at issue and has done a lot to redeem themselves,” Surovell said.

Morrissey, who was 57 in 2014, entered an Alford plea to the misdemeanor count and was sentenced to 12 months in jail with six months suspended. He was allowed to work as a state delegate from Henrico County through a work release program, spending nights in jail in 2015.

He lost a bid for mayor of Richmond in 2016. In June 2019, he defeated Sen. Rosalyn Dance, D-Petersburg, in a primary.

Morrissey, a former Richmond prosecutor and local defense attorney, has been disbarred but now wields significant power as a member of the state Senate Judiciary Committee, often scrutinizing judges, and expresses more independent views than other Senate Democrats.

His license was previously revoked in 2003, and he won reinstatement in 2012 in a 4-3 decision by the Virginia Supreme Court.

His pardon petition to Northam was dated Nov. 29.

“In 2013 it was alleged that Joe and Myrna engaged in consensual sexual intercourse,” the petition said. “Assuming that this happened, it is important to consider today’s reality. It should also be noted that when Myrna applied for a job with Mr. Morrissey, she misrepresented her age when she submitted her resume.”

The petition later continued:

“Myrna will be the first to acknowledge that she was not in any way manipulated by Joe and that she was in no way coerced by him. … They worked together, they were attracted to each other, they fell in love, married, and are raising four (4) wonderful children together. A beautiful and happy family living the American Dream.”

Morrissey said in the petition that although many members of the public love him, he is “a politically polarizing figure.”

One Democrat who was unhappy with the pardon on Friday was Lizzie Hylton, the political and legislative director for the special interest group Clean Virginia.

“Never in my life have I been so ashamed to be a Democrat,” she wrote on Twitter. “Thanks @GovernorVA for spitting in the face of me and every other survivor of sexual assault in VA on your way out of office.”

The petition included affidavits from Myrna Morrissey, her mother and grandmother in support of her relationship with Joe Morrissey and the pardon.

“I was a mature woman who knew exactly what I was doing,” Myrna Morrissey wrote. “This prosecution continues to hang over our family.”

I'm Tongan, and there's a post in r/Tonga which makes claims that Tonga is about to get Farcry 5'd by a South Korean cult. That's not the only issue, and I'm not even afraid to say it's not a conspiracy, the second half of this post is simply the truth. The first half will be about the South Korean cult and the second half about Asia eating up Polynesia. Now I know you guys won't give a fuck about a little country in the Pacific but I think it needs to be addressed, we are being invaded covertly.

It's not a joke when I say, the Chinese are coming in droves. Call me racist all you want but they are truly invading. The new guide was friendly but confused about why I wanted to see the camp. Whenever I read another story about Beijing’s globe-spanning Belt-and-Road Initiative, I think of the blue-jumpsuited men. And the headlines about China in the South Pacific just get more frequent. Only recently, China was trying to buy the region’s dominant telecom company, scaring Australia into bidding for it, too.

Tonga’s chain of nearly 170 tiny islands, most of them uninhabited, doesn’t look like much to the average outsider and that’s why it’s such a perfect example of Beijing’s strategy.

No country is too small, and no small country’s affairs too trivial for China to concern itself with in its march for new global order, a “community of common destiny”—defined by cooperation with Beijing. At the same time, Tonga, even among the scattered island nations of the Pacific, also stands out symbolically. Tonga was the only nation in the region that escaped colonization by the West, and its status as one of the world’s last monarchies affords it special recognition. In 2015, one of the Hapsburgs of Europe attended King George VI’s coronation, as did Japan’s then-crown prince and princess who are now emperor and empress. The U.K. even touts the Tongan royals’ ties to the House of Windsor.

Tonga asks China to restructure heavy debt load

SYDNEY (Reuters) - The Pacific island nation of Tonga has asked Beijing to restructure its large bilateral debt load, the government said on Thursday, as the pandemic upends the region’s tourism revenues and an onerous Chinese loan repayment schedule looms.

Tonga is one of the biggest Chinese debtors in the South Pacific, with its financial reliance dating back to loans taken more than a decade ago to rebuild its capital, Nuku’alofa, after riots.

The small economy, largely dependent on external aid and remittances from Tongans living abroad, has since taken out additional loans.

Tonga is due to make small principal repayments to the Export-Import Bank of China (EXIM) this financial year before the schedule ramps up in 2023-2024, when it will need to set aside about 15% of revenue to service external debts.
