Court won't block entire election 'investigation' subpoena

In the unsigned order, the court said state officials and Democratic lawmakers did not persuade it that the subpoena issued in September by a Republican-controlled Senate committee had no legitimate legislative purpose

The subpoena had requested a 17 categories of records, much of it public, but also wanted information the state attorney general’s office said is protected by privacy laws — namely voters’ partial Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers and details about election systems that are barred from public disclosure by federal law governing critical infrastructure.

Wisconsin Judge Rejects Blocking Subpoena in GOP-Led Investigation of 2020 Election

A judge in Wisconsin has denied a request from Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul to block a subpoena of the state's top elections official in an investigation of the 2020 presidential election led by former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman.

The ruling means Gableman can continue with his plans to interview Meagan Wolfe, Wisconsin's elections commission administrator, unless the other legal challenges to his other subpoenas affect his authority in conducting the investigation.

London — T-cells generated as part of the body's natural immune response to the common cold may help protect against serious illness from COVID-19, according to a study carried out in the U.K. Researchers at Imperial College London told CBS News the findings could help scientists create vaccines that remain more effective against new variants of the coronavirus.

 

The study, which was peer reviewed and published in the journal "Nature Communications," began in September 2020 and looked at 52 household contacts of people who had tested positive for COVID-19. It found that 26 people who were exposed to the coronavirus but did not get sick had significantly higher cross-reactive T-cells, generated by previous common colds, than those who did become ill with COVID.

Kenya Power Says Nationwide Outage Caused By Collapse of One Its Towers

 

Nairobi — Kenya Power says the nationwide power outage has been occasioned by the collapse of the Kiambere -Embakasi high voltage transmission power line.

 

"We have lost power supply due to collapsed towers on the Kiambere-Embakkasi transmission line at 10.45 am this morning," KPLC said.

 

In a statement, the firm said its engineers are conducting repairs on the power line in a bid to restore the electricity supply.

 

"An update on the restoration progress will be issued in due course, we wish to apologize to our customers for the inconvenience caused," the firm said in a statement.

 

Kenyans on social media have already decried the power cut saying it's a huge inconvenience to their businesses.

But the online sleuth group DRASTIC released documents from EcoHealth Alliance’s “DEFUSE Project” last month, revealing a March 2018 proposal to Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) seeking $14.2 million for research to make bat viruses more dangerous.

 

“Our goal is to analyze, predict, then ‘DEFUSE’ the spillover potential of novel bat-origin high-risk SARSr-COVs in Southeast Asia," read Daszak's proposal. "This will safeguard the U.S. warfighter.”

 

The proposal called for inserting spike proteins that could bind to human cells into "SARSr-CoV backbones" and said, "We will introduce appropriate human-specific cleavage sites and evaluate growth potential in Vero cells and human airway epithelial cells cultures.”

 

DARPA rejected the proposal, saying it potentially involved the controversial gain-of-function research, which entails manipulating viruses to make them more transmissible and was restricted by the U.S. government at the time.

shedding in the bat caves” as of interest to DARPA. These reviewers assessed the EHA and

  • They have access to Yunnan caves where bats are infected with SARSr viruses.

  • They have carried out past surveillance work

  • They have developed geo-based risk maps of zoonotic hotspots

  • Their proposed experimental work is logical and can validate molecular and evolutionary

models.

  • Their proposed preemption approaches can rapidly be validated using bat and

"batenized" mouse models.

FAYETTEVILLE – Attorneys for former University of Arkansas, Fayetteville professor Simon Ang are seeking to prevent testimony about Chinese government "talent plans" from being heard at his trial on wire fraud and other charges.

The flurry of court filings ahead of Ang's trial, which is scheduled to begin Feb. 7 in U.S. District Court in Fayetteville, reveal sharp divisions between the prosecution and defense attorneys over what sort of testimony and evidence is relevant to Ang's case.

The longtime electrical engineering professor faces 55 counts of wire fraud, most related to his pursuit of NASA and U.S. Air Force research grants. Prosecutors in court documents have stated that Ang failed to disclose to government funding agencies and to UA ties to China and Chinese companies.

FBI Director Christopher Wray in a 2020 talk described Chinese talent programs as a government effort "to entice scientists to secretly bring our knowledge and innovation back to China."

Ang "was a participant in the 'Thousand Talent Program,'" states a motion filed by his attorney on Jan. 3.

But while the U.S. Department of Justice in recent years has pursued economic espionage charges against some researchers working in the U.S., no such charges have been filed against Ang.

The motion filed by Ang's attorney, Drew Ledbetter, asks the court to specifically block any reference to the Thousand Talents Program.

Ang's motion states that "it is anticipated" that prosecutors intend to use his "affiliation with the program with nefarious, prejudicial, inflammatory and/or politicized purposes, only."

Ledbetter, based in Fayetteville, did not respond to questions from a reporter about the filings, but he said Ang is 64 years old and has been a U.S. citizen since 1986. Ang is Malaysian by birth, Ledbetter said.

In November, prosecutors filed a notice with the court that they may call as an expert witness Emily Weinstein, described as an independent consultant on "talent programs" sponsored by the People's Republic of China, sometimes referred to as the PRC.

Ang's motion goes on to state: "There are no allegations in the Superseding Indictment that by Defendant's participation in the program, he committed a crime."

However, the court document listing charges against Ang filed in July as a superseding indictment states that Ang "received large sums of money" from the People's Republic of China as "part of the scheme and artifice to defraud."

The indictment filed by prosecutors states that Ang "saved a document on a portable hard drive he controlled which stated in Chinese 'I have received the one-time 'Thousand Talents Program' expert's grant of 1 million yuan from the central finance department.'"

Based on current exchange rate information, that works out to about $150,000.

The indictment also states that Ang in 2018 was part of an ownership group for a China-based company making glass coating materials for car windshields and solar panels, with payments from the company going to a limited liability company formed by Ang.

In addition to charges related to Ang's pursuit of U.S. research grants, other counts of wire fraud relate to the limited liability company said to have been set up by Ang and also university salary payments made to him, according to the indictment.

The wire transactions listed in the indictment add up to $515,548 in NASA grant money, $1,074,811 in Air Force grants, $31,830 in UA salary paid to Ang and $88,000 in payments made to Ang's limited liability company.

Ang also has been charged with two counts of making a false statement in application and use of a passport, as well as two counts of making a false statement.

The indictment against Ang states that he told an FBI agent in May 2020 he was not the holder of Chinese patents, but the court document states that Ang is listed as the inventor for "numerous" patents in China.

Ang has formally denied all charges in his court plea.

I contacted politicians in my city about banning genital mutilation last year in November.

As the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol rushes to gather evidence and conduct interviews, how far it will be able to go in holding former President Donald J. Trump accountable increasingly appears to hinge on one possible witness: former Vice President Mike Pence.

Since the committee was formed last summer, Mr. Pence’s lawyer and the panel have been talking informally about whether he would be willing to speak to investigators, people briefed on the discussions said. But as Mr. Pence began sorting through a complex calculation about his cooperation, he indicated to the committee that he was undecided, they said.

To some degree, the current situation reflects negotiating strategies by both sides, with the committee eager to suggest an air of inevitability about Mr. Pence answering its questions and the former vice president’s advisers looking for reasons to limit his political exposure from a move that would further complicate his ambitions to run for president in 2024.

But there also appears to be growing tension.

In recent weeks, Mr. Pence is said by people familiar with his thinking to have grown increasingly disillusioned with the idea of voluntary cooperation. He has told aides that the committee has taken a sharp partisan turn by openly considering the potential for criminal referrals to the Justice Department about Mr. Trump and others. Such referrals, in Mr. Pence’s view, appear designed to hurt Republican chances of winning control of Congress in November.

And Mr. Pence, they said, has grown annoyed that the committee is publicly signaling that it has secured a greater degree of cooperation from his top aides than it actually has, something he sees as part of a pattern of Democrats trying to turn his team against Mr. Trump.

For the committee, Mr. Pence’s testimony under oath would be an opportunity to establish in detail how Mr. Trump’s pressuring him to block the certification of Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory brought the country to the brink of a constitutional crisis and helped inspire the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

It could also be vital to the committee in deciding whether it has sufficient evidence to make a criminal referral of Mr. Trump to the Justice Department, as a number of its members have said they could consider doing. The potential charge floated by some members of the committee is violation of the federal law that prohibits obstructing an official proceeding before Congress.

Rebecca Villarreal says her family stopped for a treat at Groovy Smoothie in Tarpon Springs. According to their Facebook page, the store sells items such as fruit bowls, juices and smoothies with the choice of being infused with cannabis.

European Parliament President David Sassoli dies at age 65

David Sassoli, an Italian journalist who worked his way up in politics while defending the downtrodden and repressed to become president of the European Union’s parliament, died at a hospital in Italy early Tuesday. He was 65.

European Council President Charles Michel called Sassoli a “sincere and passionate European. We already miss his human warmth, his generosity, his friendliness and his smile.”

Over the past few months, he improved enough to preside over a European Parliament session in December to give the EU’s main human rights award, the Sakharov Prize, to Navalny’s daughter. High in symbolism, it showed him at his best. A few weeks later, his wishes for the new year became his political testament as an optimist with great expectations.

“We can be that hope when we don’t ignore those in need. When we don’t build walls on our borders. When we fight all forms of injustice. Here’s to us, here’s to hope,” he said in the address.

“In the final week of December there was a worsening of the illness, and then the final days of his battle,” Cuillo told Italy’s Sky TG24.

He is survived by his wife, Alessandra Vittorini, and his children, Livia and Giulio. Flags flew half-staff and the European Parliament opened a condolences register. The European Commission will hold a minute of silence when it meets on Wednesday.

He was just as respected in Italy.

Italian Premier Mario Draghi sent condolences on behalf of the Italian government and paid tribute to Sassoli as “a man of institutions, a profound pro-European, a passionate journalist, Sassoli was a symbol of balance, humanity, generosity.”

The head of Sassoli’s Democratic Party and a longtime friend, Enrico Letta, praised Sassoli’s European passion and vision and vowed to carry them forward, though “we know we’re not up to it.”

In a tweet, Letta called Sassoli “someone of extraordinary generosity, a passionate European” and a man of “vision and principles, theoretical and practical.”

Another former Italian premier of the center-left, Paolo Gentiloni, called his death a “terrible loss.”

“I will always remember his leadership, his passion, his generous friendship. #CiaoDavid,” Gentiloni tweeted.

Sassoli was first elected to the European Parliament in 2009. He won another term in 2014 and served as its vice president. He started out as a newspaper journalist before entering broadcasting as a high-profile presenter in Italy. It was a stepping stone for his political career.

He had considered running for the second part of the five-year term which starts next week, but decided not to run for reelection when lawmakers choose their new president in Strasbourg, France.

Roberta Metsola, the Christian Democrat who was already set to take over from Sassoli next week, said “I am heartbroken. Europe has lost a leader, I have a lost a friend, democracy has lost a champion.” She said Sassoli “dedicated his life to making the world a better, fairer place.”

This has been researched to death. Read the refutation of the Corman-Drosten paper, which spelled it out precisely. Listening to the interview Dr. Vladimir Zelenko did with Glenn Beck yesterday morning about his Zelenko Protocol and he was quite adamant that the vaccines are shit. Both of these drugs open a pathway into the covid cell allowing the Zinc to penetrate and stop the replication. When HCQ and Ivermectin were banned, a move he said himself, was a crime against humanity, he was left to find something else and he did, accidentally. Quercetin, which he discovered does exactly the same thing as the HCQ and Ivermectin does. Opens that pathway into the covid cell where the Zinc can kill it. And it's over the counter. I'm going to go back and listen to that interview again. In the meantime, I found his site and after reading through a lot of it I'm convinced that this is what will be needed if I or wifeanon comes down with this shit. I'm not a shill for Dr. Zelenko but if you listened to this interview and read the information on his site it make absolute, total sense. He is making available his protocol called ZStack. I had it in October. To me it just seemed like a type of Flu, other than the smell / taste aspect. Then again I haven't had flu since the 80's. But my wife who also caught it, says she has had the symptoms before. IDK, go figure. I don't think I ever slept so much in my life, or had so many weird dreams. I was out of it for about 8 days, cured with ivermectin tablets, and standard home meds.
