Mark Zuckerberg spent $419M on nonprofits ahead of 2020 election — and got out the Dem vote

During the 2020 election, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent hundreds of millions of dollars to turn out likely Democratic voters. But this wasn’t traditional political spending. He funded a targeted, private takeover of government election operations by nominally nonpartisan — but demonstrably ideological — nonprofit organizations.

Analysis conducted by our team demonstrates this money significantly increased Joe Biden’s vote margin in key swing states. In places like Georgia, where Biden won by 12,000 votes, and Arizona, where he won by 10,000, the spending likely put him over the top.

This unprecedented merger of public election offices with private resources and personnel is an acute threat to our republic and should be the focus of electoral reform efforts moving forward.

The 2020 election wasn’t stolen — it was likely bought by one of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful men pouring his money through legal loopholes.

The Center for Technology and Civic Life (CTCL) and the Center for Election Innovation and Research (CEIR) passed a staggering $419.5 million of Zuckerberg’s money into local government elections offices, and it came with strings attached. Every CTCL and CEIR grant spelled out in great detail the conditions under which the grant money was to be used.

This is not a matter of Democrats outspending Republicans. Private funding of election administration was virtually unknown in the American political system before the 2020 election.

Big CTCL and CEIR money had nothing to do with traditional campaign finance, lobbying or other expenses that are related to increasingly expensive modern elections. It had to do with financing the infiltration of election offices at the city and county level by left-wing activists and using those offices as a platform to implement preferred administrative practices, voting methods and data-sharing agreements, as well as to launch intensive outreach campaigns in areas heavy with Democratic voters.

For instance, CTCL/CEIR funded self-described “vote navigators” in Wisconsin to “assist voters, potentially at their front doors, to answer questions, assist in ballot curing … and witness absentee ballot signatures,” and a temporary staffing agency affiliated with Stacey Abrams called Happy Faces counting the votes amid the election night chaos in Fulton County, Georgia.

CTCL demanded the promotion of universal mail-in voting through suspending election laws, extending deadlines that favored mail-in over in-person voting, greatly expanding opportunities for “ballot curing,” expensive bulk mailings, and other lavish “community outreach” programs that were directed by private activists.

CTCL drove the proliferation of unmonitored private drop boxes (which created major chain-of-custody issues) and opportunities for novel forms of “mail-in ballot electioneering,” allowed for the submission of numerous questionable post-election-day ballots, and created opportunities for illegal ballot harvesting.

CTCL greatly increased funding for temporary staffing and poll workers, which supported the infiltration of election offices by paid Democratic Party activists, coordinated through a complex web of left-leaning nonprofit organizations, social media platforms and social media election influencers.

The amount of additional money these groups poured into elections offices in Democrat-voting areas was truly staggering. To put it in perspective, federal and state matching funds for COVID-19-related election expenses in 2020 totaled $479.5 million.

The CTCL and CEIR money totaled $419.5 million.

These two private nonprofits were responsible for an 85 percent increase in total additional election funding — and that largesse was concentrated in a relatively small number of heavily Democratic municipalities.

Although CTCL and CEIR are chartered as nonpartisan 501(c)(3) corporations, our research suggests the spending that took place in 2020 was highly partisan in its distribution and its effects.

Of the 25 grants CTCL provided to cities and counties in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia that were $1 million or larger, 23 went to areas Biden won in 2020. One of the two counties won by Donald Trump, Brown County, Wisconsin, received about $1.1 million — less than 1.2 percent of the $87.5 million that CTCL provided to these top 25 recipients.

But even in Brown County, Wisconsin, where heavily Democrat Green Bay is located, the funding disparities are glaring. The Wisconsin legislature provided roughly $7 per voter to the city of Green Bay to manage its 2020 elections. Rural counties in Wisconsin received approximately $4 per voter.

The CTCL funds boosted Democratic-voting Green Bay resources to $47 per voter, while most rural areas still had the same $4 per voter. Similar funding disparities occurred near Detroit, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Flint, Mich., Dallas, Houston and other cities that received tens of millions of dollars of CTCL money.

Preliminary analysis shows this partisan targeting of CTCL funding was repeated in battleground states across the country. Our first case study, however, examines the effect of CTCL spending on the 2020 election in Texas.

The figure below shows the counties that received CTCL spending ranked by per-capita CTCL spending in Texas. As can easily be seen, the counties with the highest per-capita levels of CTCL spending were Democratic counties.

It should be noted that Tarrant County, which contains Fort Worth, is listed as a Republican county but flipped Democrat in 2020. The DFW exurban Denton and Collin counties, which are solidly Republican, are not included here because they received no CTCL funding.

Funding and managing elections has always been a government function, not a private one, and for good reason. Private organizations are not subject to the rules for public employees and institutions — they are not required to hold public hearings, cannot be monitored via open-records requests and other mechanisms of administrative and financial transparency, are not subject to the normal checks and balances of the governmental process and are not accountable to voters if the public disapproves of their actions.

The practical effect of these massive, privately manipulated election-office funding disparities was to create a “shadow” election system with a built-in structural bias that systematically favored Democratic voters over Republican voters. The massive influx of funds essentially created a high-powered, concierge-like get-out-the-vote effort for Biden that took place inside the election system, rather than attempting to influence it from the outside.

We call this the injection of structural bias into the 2020 election, and our analysis shows it likely generated enough additional votes for Biden to secure an Electoral College victory in 2020.

Our preliminary results in Georgia and Wisconsin suggest a similar impact on Biden’s vote margin from CTCL spending. And spending in those states was likely large enough and targeted enough to have shifted them into Biden’s column.

This research and analysis project will culminate in the creation of a counterfactual electoral map based on the combined results of our state-by-state analysis. It will reflect how the election results would have looked after the last legal ballot was counted if CTCL and CEIR did not spend their $419.5 million in 2020.

We have good reason to anticipate that the results of our work will show that CTCL and CEIR involvement in the 2020 election gave rise to an election that, while free, was not fair. The 2020 election wasn’t stolen — it was likely bought with money poured through legal loopholes.

Media Silent as Murdoch Empire Borrows $100M From Bank of China

The Murdoch family—owners of Fox News, Sky News Australia, and The New York Post—has tapped into a $100 million loan from the Chinese government’s state-owned Bank of China’s New York branch. The loan is part of a gigantic $1.25 billion loan package disclosed last Thursday to Murdoch’s News Corp. Though not reported by mainstream news in the U.S., the loan comes at the same time as Murdoch’s global media empire virulently denounces the Chinese Communist Party.

According to the 180-page filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the ASX in Australia, the Bank of China’s $100 million in loans is the second-largest after Bank of America, which is contributing $117 million. Other lenders include J.P. Morgan Chase, Citibank, Morgan Stanley Bank, MUFG Bank, Deutsche Bank New York Branch, Goldman Sachs Bank USA, HSBC Bank USA, Australia, and New Zealand Banking Group Limited, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac Banking Corp., and National Australia Bank Limited.

With an estimated $3.7 trillion in assets, the Bank of China is the largest and oldest bank on the Chinese mainland. The news of the funding comes as China‘s largest city, Shanghai, extended its lockdown on Monday to test its 25 million residents for COVID-19, as reported by Murdoch-owned the Wall Street Journal.

It is not clear why the mega-company needs the money. According to the filing, it will be used for unstated “general corporate purposes,” leading the Australian publication Crikey to ponder whether “a big takeover [is] in the offing?”

A year ago, Crickey reported on Murdoch’s $460 million purchase of book publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt—a deal which added 7,000 titles to the Harper Collins back catalog, including the Lord of the Rings trilogy and George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984. The purchase provoked a unique tweet from Rupert’s “latter-day chief critic,” Kevin Rudd.

Days before purchasing Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, News Corp announced the $362 million purchase of Investors Business Daily, which oversees investors.com, with nearly 100,000 digital subscribers. According to Crikey, the combined $822 million between the two acquisitions in 2021 put News Corp’s cash balance in a net debt position for the first time since it de-merged 21st Century Fox in 2013, with its Dec. 31 News Corp balance sheet revealing that net cash was down to $306 million.

Explaining the situation further, Crickey reports that News Corp first went into a net debt position 12 months ago when it committed $1.07 billion to three separate bolt-on acquisitions in one week. Still, last August, it then announced a much more substantial $1.15 billion cash acquisition of OPIS, the Oil Price Information Service, that S&P was forced to sell by U.S. anti-trust regulators. The purchase was partly funded by a $500 million notes issue in February 2022—an issue of debt securities to institutional investors rather than borrowing directly from banks.

News Corp’s Dec. 31 accounts indicate it already had gross borrowings totaling $2.27 billion, down slightly from $2.313 billion on Jun. 30. However, according to Crickey, this was primarily counterbalanced by $2.187 billion of cash holdings. Among other entities, the company also owns Dow Jones, Realtor.com, The Sun, and REA Group. The company’s market capitalization is $13.2 billion; thus, “it has the capacity to borrow a few billion.”

News Corp Fox Corporation’s balance sheet is “in slightly worse shape with $8 billion in gross debt.” Yet this is somewhat offset by $4.45 billion in cash, leaving net debt at $3.75 billion against a market capitalization of $22 billion. And without a doubt, the Murdochs have a noticeable majority of their estimated $23 billion family fortune tied up in Disney shares despite having no power in the $251 billion controversial business. Indeed, Rupert Murdoch’s $71 billion deal with Disney in 2019 turned all six of his children into billionaires in their own right.

A hint to one plausible explanation for Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch’s acceptance of the loan was reported on Mar. 24, 2022, by Financial Times (FT). Figures released last month related to the British tabloid phone-hacking scandal reveal how the decade-old drama—involving members of the Royal family and murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler—continues to cast a shadow over Murdoch’s UK newspaper operations, including The Sun and The Sun on Sunday.

FT reports that News Corp revealed last month that it “set aside roughly $19 million for damages and claimants’ expenses and incurred $44 million in its own legal fees. These bills are in addition to nearly $104 million in the same type of expenses in 2021 and pushed the company to an annual pre-tax loss of $67 million. FT reports that, under an arrangement reached when Fox was split from News Corp, costs to Murdoch related to the phone-hacking scandal are indemnified by Fox Corporation.

Curiously, on Feb. 4, 2022, the WSJ reported on a “cyberattack on News Corp,” which they declared was believed to be linked to China. Whatever the justification behind accepting a loan involving the CCP, Crickey points out:

“For Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch, [accepting the money] was no problem whatsoever —meaning that, as of yesterday, parts of the Murdoch media empire are ‘partially brought to you by the autocratic dictators in Beijing.’ But don’t expect this to be disclosed by News Corp’s anti-China shock jocks any time soon.”

Twitter Workers Worried Elon Musk Will Turn Their Free Speech Platform Into Platform That Allows Free Speech

SAN FRANCISCO, CA—With Elon Musk becoming Twitter's largest stakeholder and a new member of the board of directors, many within the company are worried he may turn their free speech platform into a platform that actually allows free speech.

"This could destroy us," said Yinny Xendapoo, Twitter's director of content moderation. "When we say we're a free speech platform, we never intended to actually allow free speech! If we allowed free speech, people might say things we don't like and that's NOT ok."

Others are concerned that Musk's influence may cause the social network to allow unfettered social networking, and millions of people to use the platform to platform themselves even though they are yucky and have weird opinions that shouldn't be platformed.

"This is not what our free speech social network was meant to do," said an angry Xendapoo.

Several within the company are calling for Musk's immediate removal, and have threatened to resign and start their own group text message on their phones where conservative opinions will not be allowed.
