High-Frequency Trading (HFT) and it's relevance to the metals markets-Spoofing

 

This is meant as an introduction to this subject, and only scratches the surface, for those who are not aware that the markets (all of them) are controlled by algorithmic 'bots. If you are a retail trader you are at a disadvantage from the start. What you see is already delayed by at least 10-12 seconds-no matter what (and this is also influenced by your location to the exchanges/data feeds which adds additional time via latency.) All of this is completely legal-but you can lower your risk by being aware of market conditions and educate yourself in technical analysis to assist in sidestepping the relentless wave of algorithms that dominate our markets. Hopefully you take some of this information and start researching it yourself as there is nowhere near the space to get into most of this in greater detail.

 

Basic description-High-frequency trading (HFT) is algorithmic trading characterized by high-speed trade execution, an extremely large number of transactions, and a very short-term investment horizon. HFT leverages special computers to achieve the highest speed of trade execution possible. It is very complex and, therefore, primarily a tool employed by large institutional investors such as investment banks and hedge funds. Complex algorithms that are used in high-frequency trading analyze individual stocks to spot emerging trends in milliseconds. It will result in hundreds of buy orders to be sent out in a matter of seconds, given the analysis finds a trigger.

It details the Flash Crash event that occurred on May 6th, 2010 and does an excellent job of laying out the evidence as well as presenting visual proof of how the algos operate. It is old and stops at 2013 however it is still very relevant as the only real thing that has changed is the sophistication of the the algorithms and the speed of execution-that has changed quite a bit since these events are/were documented.

 

There is also an excellent book written by Michael Lewis, yes that Michael Lewis, called 'Flash Boys' and it details the rise of the HFT systems starting in 2006. Again the information is old but it does an excellent job of showing just what was habbening with it's main source from The Royal Bank of Canada that details the suspicious options activity via the bid/ask manipulation. I will add that I witnessed this very same manipulation as I would place an order to sell 10 options and my hard price was never filled because as soon as I entered it the price moved away-this is a lesson to NEVER use market orders EVER. I had to enter in an order to buy 1 option contract in order for it to move back to the price I wanted to sell for-so I sold 10 contracts but had to buy 1 to do it-and that did not last very long either-they figured that out quickly. They tested all this out in the options markets in 2005/6 before heavily introducing it across all markets. This is what the 'Flash Boys' book covers.

 

What needs to change with this is the fact that the big firms that do this (Virtu Financial is at the top of the heap here) get rebates back from the market makers for placing orders. They are incentivized them to constantly place orders because there is a kickback to them for doing so. You might have heard of 'spoofing'-specifically in the metals markets. This is when multiple orders get placed in the system with no intention of ever having them execute. The goal of spoofing is to move market prices in a way that financially benefits the trader’s preexisting positions in the market. They do this solely to influence price movement either up or down by having these orders seen on the order "book"-they are then quickly canceled. By consistently entering and then canceling orders they naturally have an influence on where the price of any asset may go. So you can open an order on the futures or options market to drive the price in a particular direction but when it gets close to filling you-or your algo. pull the order. This then tricks other market participants into thinking there is more depth in a particular direction that is not really there.

 

This can be easily solved by charging participants for placing orders-you also have to dis-incentivize the order placement as well. One of the biggest arenas for spoofing in the metals markets-specifically Ag. Deutsche Bank got caught for doing this but paid a fine and admitted nothing-in 2018, Deutsche Bank paid $30 million to settle with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission over alleged spoofing. The bank neither admitted nor denied the allegations. JP Morgue also did the same thing and one of it's traders was charged with RICO violations-fined (almost $1b-$920m) and they were actually banned from trading in it's proprietary (house account) so what did they do? see-this >>15945262 O.C.C Quarterly Derivatives Report Q4 2021-March25th, 2022 (Silver derivatives increases)

They continue to do so from it's house account as well-this is visible via the COMEX daily #s-specifically how many contracts and who "placed the trades". The contract size for Ag is 5000 ozs but there is a smaller physical component of it as well. Remember the Spot price movements reflect paper contracts being invented out of thin air and sold against an open market.

In 2010-2011 they did the opposite via the same strategy and drove the price higher and amassing a huge short position. I will add that I've never completely believed what they report because at times they "report" that millions of ozs. of silver have entered or exited the COMEX warehouse yet there seems to never be any empirical evidence of this actually habbening in that size-you'd think someone might have seen a truck or two entering or exiting that facility-especially when the paperwork that is produced say millions of ozs. There is also an element of the ETF's here which will be addressed in a later post (specifically that you own nothing with those-it is only a promissory note and has not real value when the shit hits the fan. You will be in a very LONG line with zero chance of actually taking physical delivery.

There is no physical silver being traded with this it is simply a payoff for exit COMEX contracts so that they do not stand for delivery

They simply leased out Ag to Bank of America who, prior to the start of last year, had zero operations in the Ag COMEX markets, so they could continue to do the dirty work for the Morgue. They placed it of Bank of America because it is , like the others, a too-big-too-fail bank…and when the time comes the thinking is/was how can you not bail out Bank of America-so off it went to them.

This system operates in nano-seconds and you will never 'beat it" so you need to be aware you are always reacting to whatever they are doing-as well as the built in latency. So take some time and educate yourself properly to see how this is all legal, allowed and there is nothing you as an individual can do about it-you just have to understand you are always reacting

"Three bankers in New York, London and Siena, Italy, died within 17 months of each other in 2013-14 in what authorities deemed a series of unrelated suicides. But in each case, the victim had a connection to a burgeoning global banking scandal, leaving more questions than answers as to the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The March 6, 2013, death of David Rossi — a 51-year-old communications director at Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the world’s oldest bank — came as the institution teetered on the brink of collapse.

 

Rossi was found dead in an alleyway beneath his third-floor office window in the 14th-century palazzo that served as the bank’s headquarters.

 

A devastating security video shows Rossi landing on the pavement on his back, facing the building — an odd position more likely to occur when a body is pushed from a window.

The footage shows the three-story fall didn’t kill Rossi instantly. For almost 20 minutes, the banker lay on the dimly lit cobblestones, occasionally moving an arm and leg.

As he lay dying, two murky figures appear. Two men appear and one walks over to gaze at the banker. He offers no aid or comfort and doesn’t call for help before turning around and calmly walking out of the alley.

 

About an hour later, a co-worker discovered Rossi’s body. The arms were bruised and he sustained a head wound that, according to the local medical examiner’s report, suggested there may have been a struggle prior to his fall.

 

But the death was ruled a suicide, to the disbelief of Rossi’s widow, Antonella Tognazzi. She was quoted in the Italian press as saying her husband “knew too much.” She staged public demonstrations and hired a lawyer to investigate her husband’s death.

 

Among the evidence Tognazzi pointed to was the alleged suicide note, in which Rossi referred to her as Toni. He never called her Toni, she said.

Two days prior to his death, according to his wife, Rossi sent a cryptic email to the bank’s CEO, Fabrizio Viola. “I want guarantees of not being overwhelmed by this thing,” he wrote. “We would have to do right away, before tomorrow. Can you help me?”

 

It remains a mystery what specifically Rossi thought could “overwhelm” him just before his death, but many have speculated that he was referring to Monte Paschi’s troubled financial position.

 

Rossi was a close confidant of former bank president Joseph Mussari, who was the driving force behind Monte Paschi’s 2008 $7.5 billion takeover of Banca Antonveneta. Many banking analysts agreed at the time that Monte Paschi paid too much in the acquisition that Deutsche Bank financed.

The same year as Rossi’s death, European and US regulators began to probe what would become known as the Libor scandal, in which London bankers conspired to rig the London Interbank Offered Rate — an overnight interest rate that determines the interest banks charged on mortgages and auto and personal loans across the globe. It also determines the rate that banks like Monte Paschi pay for loans like the one it used to finance the purchase of Banca Antonveneta. The scandal would cost international banks — most notablyDeutsche — nearly $20 billion in fines.

"Additionally, Monte Paschi got involved in risky derivatives that took heavy losses during the financial crisis of 2008. The esteemed bank, founded 20 years before Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic, was being investigated at the time of Rossi’s death for its handling of billions in these risky derivative bets involving Deutsche Bank and Merrill Lynch.

 

In October 2014, Mussari and two other Monte Paschi executives were convicted by Italian authorities for obstructing regulators and misleading investigators on the bailed-out Italian bank’s finances in the wake of the acquisition of Banca Antonveneta. In January of this year, three executives from Deutsche Bank were also implicated civilly, including Michele Faissola, the wealth management director of the German bank — charged by Italian authorities with colluding with the troubled Monte Paschi in falsifying accounts, manipulating the market and obstructing justice. Faissola denies these charges.

 

While at least 40 bankers have killed themselves in the 17-month period starting in March 2013in the wake of the global banking scandal, the circumstances of Rossi’s death — and two others — stand out as particularly mysterious.

 

In January 2014, the body of William Broeksmit, 58, a high-ranking Deutsche Bank executive, was found hanging in his London flat from a dog leash tied to the top of a door.

 

Financial papers were strewn about, and on a dog bed near the body were a number of notes to family and friends. One was addressed to Deutsche Bank CEO Anshu Jain, with an apology. But that note — never publicly revealed until now — offered no clue as to the reason he was sorry.

 

Broeksmit’s high-ranking colleague at Deutche was Michele Faissola, who arrived on the gruesome scene after Broeksmit’s wife told his stepson, Val Broeksmit, to phone him. He arrived minutes later, and began going through the bank papers and read the suicide notes.

 

“He did go to my father’s computer which was, at the time, I thought a little weird,” said Val Broeksmit.

There is no evidence Faissola was involved in any misconduct related to Broeksmit’s death, but the stepson said he still wonders what, if anything, Faissola was searching for. Faissola declined comment.

In emails provided to The Post by his stepson Val, Broeksmit had just messaged friends about his excitement to go on a ski vacation scheduled for a week later.

"Although a report from Broeksmit’s clinical psychologist revealed that Broeksmit was “very anxious about authorities investigating areas of the bank at which he worked,” his depression over the Libor investigation the year before seemed to have lifted, according to a doctor who’d given him a clean bill of health a month before his death, said his stepson. Val found other unsettling facts while going over his father’s personal papers and emails.

 

“Yes he killed himself,” Val Broeksmit told The Post. “But there’s a question: Could it be suicide by extortion, could it be suicide by pressure or saying if you don’t do this, we’re going to do this? There’s a couple suspicions I have.”

 

In early 2013, Jain planned to make Broeksmit chief risk officer for the entire bank. He was an expert in the esoteric field of derivatives, of which Deutsche had roughly $60 trillion worth on its books. But German banking regulators nixed the appointment because they said he lacked the requisite experience.

 

Broeksmit left the bank in June, but a few months later took a position in New York as a director of Deutsche Bank Trust Company of America, the US arm of the German banking giant. It was his reward for his long service after butting heads with German banking authorities.

 

DBTCA was the former Banker’s Trust, which Deutsche bought in 1998. It’s the custodial arm for wealthy clients to park money for trust funds and other long-term investing."

Deutsche Bank’s asset and wealth management unit was overseen by Michele Faissola, who along with Broeksmit reported directly to CEO Jain. But unlike most bank directors, Broeksmit’s natural curiosity and work ethic didn’t permit him to just turn up for a monthly meeting and cash a paycheck. He began to dig in, looking at the operation.

“[My father] didn’t just want to show up,” said Val Broeksmit.

 

A month before his death, William Broeksmit wrote — in what his son says shows his anger — to fellow executives, asking why he should take the lead on the sticky matter of the upcoming Federal Reserve-mandated stress test for the bank.

 

He also questioned the “generous” loan-loss numbers being used by the bank, afraid that federal regulators would see the bank was losing more on loans than the books showed. Large losses could lead the feds to slap the bank with restrictions.

“Who is recommending that I do this? I am supposed to be an independent director and this puts me further into a role aligned with management,” he wrote.

 

Two years ago, the mystery of the banker suicides hit New York City. Calogero “Charles” Gambino, 41, a married father of two, was Deutsche’s in-house lawyer for 11 years at the bank’s downtown headquarters. He was working on defending the bank against Libor charges and other regulatory probes.

 

On Oct. 20, 2014, Gambino’s body was found by his wife, Maria, hanging from an upstairs balcony of his Brooklyn home, a neatly kept white brick townhouse in Bay Ridge with ornamental stone fretwork at the roofline. The rope was snaked through the banister and tied off on the newel post on the first floor.

 

There was no reported note and his tight-knit family has refused to speak about his death.

The Post reached out to the widow numerous times, only to be told by a Deutsche Bank spokesperson that his wife “did not wish to be disturbed and please remember she has two young children.”

The serious-looking, bespectacled banker was a New York success story — a graduate of St. John’s University and St. John’s Law School who spent two years working at the Securities and Exchange Commission as an enforcement lawyer. He then moved to the white-shoe law firm Skadden Arps as an associate for four years before taking the position at Deutsche Bank, where he moved up the ranks to become an associate general counsel and managing director.

 

In his work as corporate counsel for Deutsche, Gambino had dealings with many of the bank’s European executives — including Michele Faissola and William Broeksmit.

Mostly it was Gambino’s colleague, outside counsel Mark Stein of Simpson Thatcher, who had the direct contact. Stein, who declined to comment, advised Broeksmit and Faissola in 2012 and 2013 on the Libor probes. Deutsche Bank ultimately reached a settlement with the Department of Justice, paying $12 billion in fines, without any admission of liability.

 

Gambino’s death was ruled a suicide. In his case and in the cases of both Rossi and Broeksmit, probers never looked for, nor discovered, common threads.

 

But all three men worked for, or did business with, Deutsche Bank. Moreover, it appears that one or more of the scandals that enveloped Deutsche Bank and/or Monte Paschi since the financial crisis had crossed each of their desks.

 

It remains to be seen if the circumstances leading to Gambino’s and Broeksmit’s deaths will ever be reconsidered. But questions are being asked and answered in Rossi’s case.

 

Late last year, Italian authorities exhumed his body and reopened their investigation. A ruling on whether Rossi killed himself or was murdered is expected later this month.

 

UPDATE: Since the publication of the story, Alla Broeksmit, the widow of William Broeksmit, and Michele Faissola have offered comment on the story. Mrs. Broeksmit confirms that Mr. Broeksmit and Mr. Faissola were close personal friends and that there was never any conflict between them. When she discovered her husband’s body, Mrs. Broeksmit called Mr. Faissola to ask that he come to the apartment. Mrs. Broeksmit and Mr. Faissola have informed the Post that on that day, Mr. Faissola arrived at the Broeksmit’s residence after the police and other family friends solely to comfort the family, that he did not show up “minutes” later as stated in the article, and that he did not touch or review any papers of Mr. Broeksmit, the suicide notes, or Mr. Broeksmit’s computer. Mr. Faissola was and is deeply heartbroken by the loss of his friend.

Since time immemorial ritual magic and politics have been one in Tibet. A large proportion of these magic practices are devoted to the annihilation of enemies, and especially to the neutralizing of political opponents. The help of demons was necessary for such ends. And they could be found everywhere — the Land of Snows all but overflowed with terror gods, fateful spirits, vampires, ghouls, vengeful goddesses, devils, messengers of death and similar entities, who, in the words of Matthias Hermanns, “completely overgrow the mild and goodly elements [of Buddhism] and hardly let them reveal their advantages” (Hermanns, 1965, p. 401).

 

For this reason, invocations of demons were not at all rare occurrences nor were they restricted to the spheres of personal and family life. They were in general among the most preferred functions of the lamas. Hence, “demonology” was a high science taught at the monastic universities, and ritual dealings with malevolent spirits were — as we shall see in a moment — an important function of the lamaist state.

For the demons to appear they have to be offered the appropriate objects of their lust as a sacrifice, each class of devil having its own particular taste. René von Nebesky-Wojkowitz describes a number of culinary specialties from the Lamaist “demon recipe books”: cakes made of dark flour and blood; five different sorts of meat, including human flesh; the skull of the child of an incestuous relationship filled with blood and mustard seeds; the skin of a boy; bowls of blood and brain; a lamp filled with human fat with a wick made of human hair; and a dough like mixture of gall, brain, blood and human entrails (Nebesky-Wojkowitz, 1955, p. 261).

 

Once the gods had accepted the sacrifice they stood at the ritual master’s disposal. The four-armed protective deity, Mahakala, was considered a particularly active assistant when it came to the destruction of enemies. In national matters his bloodthirsty emanation, the six-handed Kschetrapala, was called upon. The magician in charge wrote the war god’s mantra on a piece of paper in gold ink or blood from the blade of a sword together with the wishes he hoped to have granted, and began the invocation.

Likewise in the middle of last century, the Yellow Hats from the Samye monastery were commissioned by the Tibetan government with the task of capturing the army of the red tsan demons in four huge “cross-hairs” in order to then send them off against the enemies of the Land of Snows. This magic instrument, a right-angled net of many-colored threads, stood upon a multistage base, each of which was filled with such tantric substances as soil form charnel fields, human skulls, murder weapons, the tips of the noses, hearts, and lips of men who died an unnatural death, poisonous plants, and similar things. The repulsive mixture was supposed to attract the tsan like a moth to a candle, so that they would become inescapably caught in the spells said over the spirit trap (Nebesky-Wojkowitz, 1955, p. 258). Following the seven-day deep meditation of a high lama it was ready and the demons could be given the command to set out against the enemy.

Such a ritual is also said to have summoned up a terrible earthquake and great panic in Nepal in earlier times, when Tibet was at war with the Nepalese. Experience had shown, however, that it sometimes takes a long time before the effects of such harmful rites are felt. It took two decades after the successful occupation of Tibet by the English (in 1904) before there was an earthquake in the Indian province of Bihar in which a number of British soldiers lost their lives. The Tibetans also traced this natural disaster back to magical activities which they had conducted prior to the invasion.

The practice widely known from the Haitian voodoo religion of making a likeness of an enemy or a doll and torturing or destroying this in their place is also widespread in Tibetan Buddhism. Usually, some substance belonging to the opponent, be it a hair or a swatch from their clothing, has to be incorporated into the substitute. It is, however, sufficient to note their name on a piece of paper. Even so, sometimes hard-to-find ingredients are necessary for an effective destructive ritual, as shown by the following Buddhist ritual: “Draw a red magic diagram in the form of a half-moon, then write the name and lineage of the victim on a piece of cotton which has been used to cover the corpse of a plague victim. As ink, use the blood of a dark-skinned Brahmin girl. Call upon the protective deities and hold the piece of material in black smoke. Then lay it in the magic diagram. Swinging a magic dagger made from the bones of a plague victim, recite the appropriate incantation a hundred thousand times. Then place the piece of material there where the victim makes his nightly camp” (Nebesky-Wojkowitz, 1955, p.260). This induces the death of the person. [2]

Dalai Lama & Sweet Sarin-ade

 

On March 20, 1995 there was a poison gas attack in Tokyo’s underground system that killed 12 and injured 5,500 others – may permanently, and shook the world public. It was a sect leader, Shoko Asahara, who gave the command. Asahara was born in 1955 as the son of a large Japanese family. As he could barely see, he had to attend a school for the blind. After finishing school he tried without success to gain admittance to Tokyo University. In the following years he became involved in Asian medicine and started to practice various yoga exercises. He married in 1978. This marriage produced six children. The first spiritual group, which he founded in 1984,was known as AUM Shinsen-no-kai, that is, “AUM — Group of the mountain ascetics”.

 

But Asahara was not a complete nobody for the god-king. According to the German magazine, Stern, they had met five times since 1987 (Stern 36/95, p. 126). Amazingly, weeks after the first poison gas attack, His Holiness still called the guru a “friend, although not necessarily a perfect one” (Stern 36/95, p. 126). Then a document from 1989 came to light in which the Kundun thanked the AUM sect for donations and confirmed that they “encouraged public awareness through religious and social activities” (Focus 38/95, p. 114). On January 21, 1989 Asahara had sent the sum of $100,000 to Dharamsala for the assistance of Tibetan refugees. As a kind of service in return he received an official note from the Council for religious and cultural affairs of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in which one can read: “To the best of our knowledge, AUM attempts to promote public well-being through various religious and social activities, for example through instruction in Buddhist doctrines and yoga” (Focus 38/95, p. 116–117).

 

As evidence for this suspicion Asahara appeals to synchronicities and miraculous signs. Like the Panchen Lama, his son was also deaf in one ear. Yet the vision which appeared to the child’s mother was even more unambiguous: “A boy flying in spurts over a snowy mountain range with his legs crossed in a full Lotus posture. A low male voice said: 'Panchen Lama'. The voice continued, 'Tibetan Buddhism is finished. I have come to rebuild it …'" (Shimatsu, I).

 

Asahara also met with other high Tibetan tantra masters — Khamtrul Rinpoche, for example, an important Nyingmapa teacher, and Kalu Rinpoche, the Kalachakra specialist of the Kagyupas whose multifarious activities we have already considered. There is supposed to have been a meeting between the Tibetan scholar, Khamtrul (who the Kundun had prophesied to be the future Rudra Chakrin), the Dalai Lama, and a member of the AUM sect (Hisako Ishii) at which the publication of esoteric teachings of Padmasambhava in Japanese was discussed. According to statements by Asahara, Khamtrul Rinpoche confirmed his “perfect, absolute, divine wisdom” (quoted by Repp, 1997, p. 18). On May 24, 1989, the Tibetan is supposed to have issued the Japanese guru with the following letter of recommendation:

“Teacher Asahara is my old friend, and I consider it an honor to be able to say the following in favor of him and of his religious activities:

I am filled with boundless admiration for Teacher Asahara’s innate Buddhist traits, like enthusiasm for his work, goodliness, generosity, and selflessness.
