Presumably, if the other 17M adults owned a gun, it would stand to reason that guns could be used defensively another 1.5M times (at the low end) and on the high end 9M+ times per year on the high end.

An Illegitimate Court Gets Ready To Convene

As the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack prepares to stage a show trial of Donald Trump on Capitol Hill this week, I have filed a lawsuit challenging the Select Committeeโ€™s gross violations of the Constitutionโ€™s separation of powers.

 

Yes, congressional committees do have the power to investigate. Yet, they can only do so in pursuit of a โ€œlegislative function,โ€ e.g., to enact new rules, regulations, or policies.

 

What settled law explicitly rules out is the pursuit of a โ€œjudicial functionโ€ in which a congressional committee seeks to act as judge, jury, and executioner. That clearly violates the separation of powers โ€“ punishment is reserved exclusively for the judicial branch.

 

In this case, Nancy Pelosiโ€™s Democrat-controlled House passed H. Res. 503 on May 21, 2021 to establish the committee; and the legislative activity of all seven of the committeeโ€™s Democrats reveal their clear intent to unconstitutionally punish Trump and his most senior advisors by subjecting us to the shame, humiliation, ostracization, banishment, denial of public office, and possible imprisonment that comes with being falsely accused of being insurrectionists seeking to overturn a fair election.

 

A sordid legislative history of these committee members spanning more than five years includes: a thoroughly discredited Russia hoax, two attempted impeachments, a Trump censure, and three House resolutions to remove Trump from office.

 

The committeeโ€™s chair, Bennie Thompson, himself created a task force in 2017 as part of the perpetuation of the Russia hoax and has described President Trump as โ€œracist and unfit to serve.โ€ Thompson also refused to show up for Trumpโ€™s 2017 inauguration.

 

Thompsonโ€™s chief lieutenant, Adam Schiff, was the lead investigator for the first Trump impeachment trial and the tip of the Democratโ€™s spear for the Russia hoax. After his hoax imploded, Schiff hired investigators to expand a probe into Trump "beyond Russia."

 

Jamie Raskin, the lead House Impeachment Manager for the second impeachment trial, has referred to Trump as โ€œa barbarian,โ€ and likewise repeatedly pushed the Russia hoax. Raskin also led the charge in pushing a trifecta of House resolutions to remove Trump from office.

 

Zoe Lofgren has called Trump โ€œan ignorant bigotโ€ who โ€œshames our countryโ€ while seeking โ€œto disqualify him from holding future office.โ€ Elaine Luria boycotted Trumpโ€™s 2020 State of the Union address and attempted to convict Trump in the court of public opinion of โ€œhigh crimes and misdemeanors set by the Constitution.โ€

 

Pete Aguilar and Stephanie Murphy likewise voted โ€œyesโ€ on both impeachments and co-sponsored H.Res. 24 which initiated the second impeachment. In acting as judge and jury in the second impeachment trial, Aguilar falsely alleged that โ€œPresident Trump attempted to use the power of his office to coerce a foreign government to interfere in an American election.โ€

A famous footnote to the Philosophy of Right proclaims that the Idea, which is the State, โ€˜marches through historyโ€™. Its gait is the dialectic; it takes strides of negation and negation of negation, one foot in the particular, the other in the universal. Congress ceded lots of authority to agencies that use that authority abusively. This will directly effect EPA's overreach on resources and other restrictions they impose. It could affect the CDC, FDA, and a few others. In recent weeks, the mood of Democratic leaders at the state and local levels has darkened considerably. And it promises to get even darker in the weeks and months ahead as voters in every age group and every income bracket look to blame Joe Biden and the Democrats for the inflation.

And inflation is far and away the number one issue American voters will make their decision on whom to support this November.

The presidentโ€™s approval rating has settled into the low 40s since January and shows no signs of rising. And my colleague Chris Queen points out itโ€™s rare for a presidentโ€™s numbers to improve substantially prior to midterms.

As of April 22, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has reported raising almost $200 million. Their candidates are going to be very well funded, but what exactly are they going to run their campaigns on?

No one cares about much of anything except inflation. And Democrats canโ€™t credibly blame anyone but themselves for that.

Another sure sign of impending doom is the large number of Democrats deserting Biden on his decision to repeal Title 42 immigration restrictions. Democrats are running away screaming from the coming chaos at the border. It probably wonโ€™t do them any good.

 

As long as Republicans can continue to keep the focus on Biden and the economy, thereโ€™s a chance for a significant waveregardless of what some experts are saying.

BEIRUT, June 13 (Reuters) - Lebanon is preparing to offer a compromise to U.S. energy envoy Amos Hochstein to resolve a dispute with Israel over maritime gas resources, three Lebanese officials with knowledge of the negotiations told Reuters.

Hochstein landed in Beirut on Monday at the invitation of the Lebanese government, which had objected to the arrival of a vessel operated by London-based Energean (ENOG.L) off the Mediterranean coast on June 5 to develop a gas field known as Karish.

Israel says Karish is part of its exclusive economic zone, but Lebanon says the field is in contested waters and should not be developed until the two countries conclude their indirect talks to delineate their maritime borders.

Those talks fizzled out last year after Lebanon pushed its claim in the disputed zone from a boundary known as "Line 23" further south to "Line 29," adding around 1,400 square km (540 square miles) to its claim, including part of Karish.

To overcome the impasse, Hochstein proposed a field-swap that would create an S-shaped boundary instead of a straight line, but Lebanon did not officially agree to the proposal, official sources said.

Lebanon has insisted on renewing the indirect talks, but has not yet publicly announced whether it would stick to Line 29 as a starting position for those negotiations.

The U.S. consider Line 29 a "non-starter," according to sources.

Three Lebanese officials with knowledge of the internal process to finalise a government stance said that Lebanon would drop claims to Line 29.

The sources said President Michel Aoun would meet Hochstein on Tuesday morning and propose "Line 23, plus a little more."

One of the officials specified that Aoun's position would be a claim to Line 23 in addition to 300 km sq that includes the Qana field, but not Karish.

Aoun would demand that indirect talks resume as soon as possible and that Israel stop all works at Karish until negotiations are concluded, two of the officials said.

MP Mark Daou, who visited Aoun on Monday as part of a group of independent parliamentarians, said the president told the lawmakers he "cannot insist on Line 29" as a starting point.

"President Aoun told us that Lebanon does not have the technical foundations on which to construct a case for Line 29 because previous governments had failed to produce formal documentation to maintain this position," Daou told Reuters.

Alain Aoun, a lawmaker from the Free Patriotic Movement which was founded by the president, said Lebanon would be making a counter-offer to Hochstein's proposal but did not give details.

SHANGHAI, June 14 (Reuters) - A protest planned by hundreds of bank depositors in central China seeking access to their frozen funds has been thwarted because the authorities have turned their health code apps red, several depositors told Reuters.

 

The depositors were planning to travel to the central province of Henan this week from across China to protest against an almost two-month block on accessing at least $178 million of deposits, which has left companies unable to pay workers and individuals unable to access savings. read more

 

Rights groups have warned China could use its vast COVID surveillance infrastructure to stifle dissent. Without a green code on their smartphone app, citizens lose access to public transport and spaces such as restaurants and malls, as well as the right to travel across the country.

 

"They are putting digital handcuffs on us," said a depositor from Sichuan province surnamed Chen, who declined to use his full name for fear of government retribution.

 

The Henan provincial government, the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Public Security did not respond to requests for comment.

 

After recent COVID outbreaks, some regions in China have asked travellers to register their plans online.

 

A man surnamed Liu, who lives in Hubei province, found that his health code turned red on the morning of June 12 after he registered the day before to travel to Henan.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration this week advised that drug manufacturers tweak their COVID-19 booster shots in order to account for recently emerged variants of the omicron strain of SARS-CoV-2.

 

The FDA's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee earlier this week "voted in favor of including a SARS-CoV-2 omicron component in COVID-19 vaccines that would be used for boosters in the U.S. beginning in fall 2022," the FDA said in a press release.

 

The agency noted that it had "not advised manufacturers to change the vaccine for primary vaccination, since a primary series with the FDA-authorized and approved COVID-19 vaccines provides a base of protection against serious outcomes of COVID-19 caused by circulating strains of SARS-CoV-2."

 

Yet the agency said it would be asking vaccine manufacturers "to begin clinical trials with modified vaccines containing an omicron BA.4/5 component" in order to head off potential surges of those strains.

 

Daily confirmed COVID cases have greatly increased throughout the United States since the late spring, though in recent weeks they have leveled off, while deaths have continued to decrease or remain low. Experts and advocates have pointed to the widespread use of COVID vaccines as one of the determining factors in keeping deaths low.

 

"The COVID-19 vaccines that the FDA has approved and authorized for emergency use have made a tremendous difference to public health and have saved countless lives in the U.S. and globally," the FDA said in its release.

The two lawyers were facing domestic terrorism charges and the possibility of 30 years in jail. This week, the Biden Administration agreed to a massive reduction of the charges in a plea agreement that will likely result only in a couple years of jail time.

 

These two defendants were participating in an effort that could have burned officers alive as a form of protest. They will now be given sentences closer to tax fraud than terrorism.

 

It is a sharp contrast to the harsh position taken by the Biden Justice Department on many of those accused of rioting on January 6th. AG Garland cited the threat to police officers in pledging an unprecedented effort to charge those involved "on any level" in the riot.

The DNC accused Trump supporters of working against democracy

 

The Democratic National Committee is fundraising off of the Jan. 6 committee hearing and attacking Republicans, according to a photo of an apparent DNC fundraising email posted on Twitter by the Republican National Committee.

 

Under the heading Biden Harris Democrats, the DNC stated, "Tonight, TV cameras will turn to Capitol Hill as the January 6 Select Committee begins its public hearings into how Donald Trump and his MAGA Republican allies organized a mob and incited a deadly

insurrection to attempt to overturn a fair, free, and secure election."

 

Republicans have repeatedly denied these claims and are calling the committee "illegitimate" and a "sham" orchestrated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

 

The DNC asked supporters to donate $25 to "help elect Democrats who will protect our democracy," according to the email.

 

The organization then proceeded to accuse Trump supporters of working against democracy.

 

"MAGA Republicans didn't stop after January. Across the country, they have continued to undermine our democracy by promoting Trump's Big Lie and making it harder to vote," the Democratic group wrote.

 

"This is about holding everyone involved accountable. It's about protecting our democracy and upholding our fundamental right to vote," the DNC stated.

 

Although it still appears likely that Republicans will overtake the House in the midterm elections this fall, donor records show that Democrats are using the Jan. 6 hearings to encourage small-dollar donations, Axios reported Thursday.
