One Palestinian beaten to death, another shot dead by IOF

 

Within the span of one day, Israeli regime forces assassinated two Palestinians, a 32-year-old worker and a teenager, across the occupied territories.

 

According to the official Palestinian WAFA news agency, the IOF attacked Ahmad Harb Ayyad near the Israeli apartheid separation wall in the city of Tulkarm in the Northwestern part of the occupied West Bank on Tuesday.

 

The soldiers then beat him to death as he attempted to cross the wall into the occupied territories trying to get to his workplace.

 

According to Ayyad's family, Israeli soldiers handed over his body to them in the Gaza Strip, where he was buried in a local cemetery.

 

The Palestinian Authority's Foreign Ministry denounced Ayyad's execution and held the Israeli occupation "fully and directly" responsible for the crime, WAFA reported.

 

The Ministry also “called on the United Nations and the international community to provide protection to the Palestinian people in the occupied territories, who are being killed every day."

 

Also on Tuesday, Al-Alam television network reported that Israeli occupation soldiers opened fire on a Palestinian adolescent in the town of Majd Al-Krum, killing him instantly.

 

According to local accounts, the boy was slain following a confrontation with Israeli soldiers, who also injured another Palestinian.

 

According to the reports, the injured Palestinian was arrested by the IOF.

 

So far this year, Israeli forces have killed over 65 Palestinians, including renowned Al-Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh, who was shot in the head by the Israeli authorities in the city of Jenin on May 11.

While the Biden administration is hoping and praying that someone - anyone - will watch the comical "Jan 6" kangaroo hearsay court taking place in Congress and meant to somehow block Trump from running for president in 2024 while also making hundreds of millions of Americans forget that the current administration could very well be the worst in US history, it is quietly preparing for the worst.

 

As none other than pro-Biden propaganda spinmaster CNN reports, when it comes to what really matters (at least according to Gallup), namely the economy, and specifically galloping gasoline prices, the White House is in a historic shambles.

 

For an administration that ended last year forecasting a leveling off of 40-year high inflation and eager to tout a historically rapid recovery from the pandemic-driven economic crisis, there is a level of frustration that comes with an acutely perilous moment. Asked by CNN about progress on a seemingly intractable challenge, another senior White House official responded flatly: "Which one?"

 

The suspects behind the historic implosion are well known: "soaring prices, teetering poll numbers and congressional majorities that appear to be on the brink have created no shortage of reasons for unease. Gas prices are hovering at or around $5 per gallon, plastered on signs and billboards across the country as a symbolic daily reminder of the reality one in which White House officials are extremely aware that the country's view of the economy is growing darker and taking Biden's political future with it."

 

"You don't have to be a very sophisticated person to know how lines of presidential approval and gas prices go historically in the United States," a senior White House official told CNN.

 

A CNN Poll of Polls average of ratings for Biden's handling of the presidency finds that 39% of Americans approve of the job he's doing. His numbers on the economy, gas prices and inflation specifically are even worse in recent polls. What CNN won't tell you is that Biden is now polling well below Trump at this time in his tenure.

he story began in 1951, when DuPont started purchasing PFOA (which the company refers to as C8) from 3M for use in the manufacturing of Teflon. 3M invented PFOA just four years earlier; it was used to keep coatings like Teflon from clumping during production. Though PFOA was not classified by the government as a hazardous substance, 3M sent DuPont recommendations on how to dispose of it. It was to be incinerated or sent to chemical-waste facilities. DuPont’s own instructions specified that it was not to be flushed into surface water or sewers. But over the decades that followed, DuPont pumped hundreds of thousands of pounds of PFOA powder through the outfall pipes of the Parkersburg facility into the Ohio River. The company dumped 7,100 tons of PFOA-laced sludge into ‘‘digestion ponds’’: open, unlined pits on the Washington Works property, from which the chemical could seep straight into the ground. PFOA entered the local water table, which supplied drinking water to the communities of Parkersburg, Vienna, Little Hocking and Lubeck — more than 100,000 people in all.

 

Bilott learned from the documents that 3M and DuPont had been conducting secret medical studies on PFOA for more than four decades. In 1961, DuPont researchers found that the chemical could increase the size of the liver in rats and rabbits. A year later, they replicated these results in studies with dogs. PFOA’s peculiar chemical structure made it uncannily resistant to degradation. It also bound to plasma proteins in the blood, circulating through each organ in the body. In the 1970s, DuPont discovered that there were high concentrations of PFOA in the blood of factory workers at Washington Works. They did not tell the E.P.A. at the time. In 1981, 3M — which continued to serve as the supplier of PFOA to DuPont and other corporations — found that ingestion of the substance caused birth defects in rats. After 3M shared this information, DuPont tested the children of pregnant employees in their Teflon division. Of seven births, two had eye defects. DuPont did not make this information public.

 

In 1984, DuPont became aware that dust vented from factory chimneys settled well beyond the property line and, more disturbing, that PFOA was present in the local water supply. DuPont declined to disclose this finding. In 1991, DuPont scientists determined an internal safety limit for PFOA concentration in drinking water: one part per billion. The same year, DuPont found that water in one local district contained PFOA levels at three times that figure. Despite internal debate, it declined to make the information public.

 

(In a statement, DuPont claimed that it did volunteer health information about PFOA to the E.P.A. during those decades. When asked for evidence, it forwarded two letters written to West Virginian government agencies from 1982 and 1992, both of which cited internal studies that called into question links between PFOA exposure and human health problems.)

 

By the ’90s, Bilott discovered, DuPont understood that PFOA caused cancerous testicular, pancreatic and liver tumors in lab animals. One laboratory study suggested possible DNA damage from PFOA exposure, and a study of workers linked exposure with prostate cancer. DuPont at last hastened to develop an alternative to PFOA. An interoffice memo sent in 1993 announced that ‘‘for the first time, we have a viable candidate’’ that appeared to be less toxic and stayed in the body for a much shorter duration of time. Discussions were held at DuPont’s corporate headquarters to discuss switching to the new compound. DuPont decided against it. The risk was too great: Products manufactured with PFOA were an important part of DuPont’s business, worth $1 billion in annual profit.

Curfew imposed after deadly unrest in Uzbekistan

 

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has vowed to bring rioters to justice

 

 

A curfew has been imposed in a region of Uzbekistan as the country’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev responded to unrest, acknowledging that people have been killed in clashes with police this week.

 

 

“Government buildings were attacked. Unfortunately, there were casualties among civilians and law enforcement officials,” Mirziyoyev told local MPs in the city of Nukus on Sunday, the site of Friday’s riots.

 

 

The president did not specify how many people had lost their lives. The authorities had previously said a “criminal group” instigated street protests and attempted to seize power in Uzbekistan’s northwestern region of Karakalpakstan.

 

 

A one-month state of emergency came into effect in the region on Sunday, with a curfew fixed from 9pm to 7am. Other measures include a ban on protests and “restrictions on the freedom of movement,” according to a document published on the president’s website.

 

 

The demonstrations ostensibly began after the government unveiled a plan to revoke Karakalpakstan’s autonomy as part of a package of constitutional amendments. Mirziyoyev, however, argued that the backlash was fueled by “misunderstood interpretations” of the proposed reform.

 

 

Mirziyoyev has promised that the status of Karakalpakstan will remain unchanged, and that the final draft of the amendments will be put to a referendum.

 

 

At the same time, the president warned of “harsh measures” against “those who try to disturb the peace, calm and public safety.”

West bars Kiev from thinking about peace – Kremlin

The US and its allies are still interested in continued conflict in Ukraine, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday. Western nations effectively prevent the government in Kiev from even thinking about any potential peace talks, the official added.

 

When asked about potential reasons that have led German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron to no longer call Russian President Vladimir Putin, Peskov called this another sign suggesting that western leaders are not interested in achieving peace through dialogue and negotiations.

 

“At the moment, the western nations are actively betting on the continued war,” Peskov told the TV show ‘Moscow. Kremlin. Putin.’ on Russia’s Rossiya 1 channel. The position of the western nations –led by Washington– leads to a situation where they “allow Ukrainians neither to think nor talk about or discuss peace,” the Russian president’s spokesman added.

 

The Kremlin believes that “common sense” would eventually prevail and the sides will return to the negotiation table. “Now, the demand for pacifying the situation is low,” Peskov commented, adding that “we are sure … that the time for talks will come.”

 

Kiev will still have to “once again understand” all the demands put forward by Moscow before the talks could continue, the Kremlin spokesman pointed out. The Ukrainian government is well aware of Russia’s position, he said, adding that Kiev just needs to “sit down at the [negotiation] table” and “sign a document that has already been largely agreed.”

 

Moscow and Kiev started peace talks just four days after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine in late February. The sides have held several rounds in person in Belarus and then continued the talks via a video link. In late March, the delegations from Russia and Ukraine met once again in Istanbul.

 

Since then, however, the talks have completely stalled, as the Ukrainian side has insisted it would only come back to the table when it was in a “stronger negotiating position.” In April, Putin accused Kiev of bringing the process to a deadlock. Peskov said at that time that Russia had provided Ukraine with a draft agreement and was awaiting a response.

 

In June, Ukraine’s top negotiator David Arakhamia suggested that Kiev believes it could achieve this “favorable position” by late August after it conducts “counteroffensive operations in certain areas.”

Missouri will now require photo ID in the upcoming November election

 

According to a new bill signed into law in Missouri, those seeking to cast a ballot will need to show proper identification.

 

House Bill 1878, signed by Missouri Republican Gov. Mike Parson on Wednesday, will become law on Aug. 28 and require persons seeking to vote to show photo identification. It also allows those without photo identification to cast a provisional ballot under certain conditions.

 

As reported by Just the News, the bill “allows people without a photo ID to cast a provisional ballot, however they must return to the polling place before 7 p.m. with a proper photo ID for the ballot to be counted. Or, the person’s signature must match the signature on file with the election authority.”

 

The bill specifically lists the acceptable forms of photo identification, which include: a non-expired Missouri driver’s license, non-expired or non-expiring Missouri nondriver’s license, or a photo identification issued by the United States, the state of Missouri, the Missouri National Guard, the United States Armed Forces or the United States Department of Veteran Affairs, as well as various other documents meeting certain requirements.

 

Importantly, voters who wish to vote and do not already have identification can receive a nondriver’s license at no cost from a Missouri state or fee office.

 

Additionally, the bill contains several other measures to protect election integrity and ensure free, fair, and secure elections.

 

For example, it authorizes the secretary of state to audit voter rolls, bans drop boxes (which are subject to tampering or fraudulent activity), and bans Missouri or any political subdivision “from receiving private money for preparing, administering or conducting an election, including registering voters.” The bill also includes various other provisions, some of which relate to absentee voting and vote-counting machines.

 

In passing this law, Missouri joins various other states that have also passed tougher election laws despite objections by Democrats. When discussing the bill, Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft succinctly stated, “You want it to be easy to vote, you want it to be hard to cheat, and you want the people to have credibility in the results.”

Prompted by fears of “overpopulation” problems, one leading expert on AI believes that coming generations will begin raising fake AI “Tamagotchi children” instead of real offspring.

 

Those of a certain age will no doubt remember “Tamagotchi”, the fake AI pets popular with children to look after and play with until they inevitably gave up the ghost.

 

However, according to one leading researcher in the UK, another “Tamagotchi Generation” is just over the horizon, but instead of raising mass-produced, pocket-sized digital pets, this new generation will seemingly live a more Blade Runner-esque existence, with would-be parents raising digital children instead of real humans.

 

So says a report by The Telegraph, which states these fake children would be the product of artificial intelligence (AI), and would reside within so-called “metaverse” realms, the likes of which are being worked on right now by big tech moguls such as Mark Zuckerberg.

 

Researcher Catriona Campbell expects that such fake AI children will become extremely popular within the next 50 years as popular sentiment gives way to malthusian views, with individuals opting to distract themselves with fake alternatives to children instead of actually raising offspring themselves.

 

“Virtual children may seem like a giant leap from where we are now, but within 50 years technology will have advanced to such an extent that babies which exist in the metaverse are indistinct from those in the real world,” the publication reports Cambell as saying in her book “AI by Design: A Plan For Living With Artificial Intelligence”, which it says will be hitting shelves this week.

 

“As the metaverse evolves, I can see virtual children becoming an accepted and fully embraced part of society in much of the developed world,” she continues. “We’re already well on our way to creating the Tamagotchi generation which, for all intents and purposes, will be ‘real’ to their parents.”

 

“Make no mistake that this development, should it indeed take place, is a technological game-changer which, if managed correctly, could help us solve some of today’s most pressing issues, including overpopulation,” the expert — who has previously worked as an advisor with the UK government — went on to say.

While Campbell might be concerned over fears to do with overpopulation, for many western nations, the main problem actually appears to be that local citizens are simply not having enough children, with birthrates plummeting across the continent of Europe.

 

Britain is no exception to this rule, with fertility on the island falling to its lowest point since records began in 2020, with similar trends being seen in the likes of Italy and Spain.

 

Such a collapse in birthrates has been used as a justification for further mass immigration by many more globalist leaning commentators, with many talking heads arguing that as many as hundreds of thousands of new arrivals are needed to allow older generations to maintain their lifestyles.

 

Those who put much greater value in cultural and national continuity however have sought different solutions to the current dive in western fertility, with the likes of Hungary and Poland pushing for pro-family policies in the hopes of seeing their native citizenry have more children.

 

For example, Poland has seen around 270,000 people apply for a new family support scheme aimed at encouraging parents to have more than one child through regular payments over one or two years.

For over a month, angry abortion sympathizers have been protesting outside the homes of United States Supreme Court justices who were part of a majority opinion leaked last month that would overturn Roe v. Wade.

As reported by Frontline News, the leaked draft of the court’s majority opinion suggests that the landmark abortion case is likely to be overturned. Protesters began mobilizing to intimidate the offending justices into upholding Roe. Abortion sympathizer group Ruth Sent Us distributed maps and coordinates of Chief Justice John Roberts’ and Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s homes.

The protesters did indeed gather outside the justices’ homes, angrily shouting and chanting things like, “No privacy for us, no peace for you,” and “save the fetus, f*** the child.”

According to 18 U.S. Code § 1507, the protests are entirely illegal. But not only was there no enforcement of the law, there was no condemnation from Biden administration officials or their allies.

WASHINGTON (AP) — More evidence is emerging in the House's Jan. 6 investigation that lends support to recent testimony that President Donald Trump wanted to join an angry mob that marched to the Capitol where they rioted, a committee member said Sunday.

 

“There will be way more information and stay tuned,” said Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill.

 

The committee has been intensifying its yearlong investigation into the attack on Jan. 6, 2021, and Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., the committee's vice chair, is making clear that criminal referrals to the Justice Department, including against Trump, could follow.

 

At least two more hearings are scheduled this month that aim to show how Trump illegally directed a violent mob toward the Capitol on Jan. 6, and then failed to take quick action to stop the attack once it began.

The committee also has been reviewing new documentary film footage of Trump’s final months in office, including interviews with Trump and members of his family.

 

Kinzinger, in a television interview, declined to disclose the new information he referred to and did not say who had provided it. He said many more details emerged after last week's testimony from former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson and that nothing had changed the committee's confidence in her credibility.

 

“There’s information I can’t say yet,” he said. “We certainly would say that Cassidy Hutchinson has testified under oath, we find her credible, and anybody that wants to cast disparagements on that, who were firsthand present, should also testify under oath and not through anonymous sources.”

 

In a separate interview, another committee member, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said: “We are following additional leads. I think those leads will lead to new testimony."

 

In Hutchinson's appearance before the committee last week, Hutchinson painted a picture of Trump as an angry, defiant president who was trying to let armed supporters avoid security screenings at a rally on the morning of Jan. 6 to protest his 2020 election defeat to Democrat Joe Biden.

 

Legal experts have said Cassidy’s testimony is potentially problematic for Trump as federal prosecutors investigate potential criminal wrongdoing.

 

“There could be more than one criminal referral,” said Cheney in an interview that aired Sunday. She said the committee will decide later in the process whether to proceed.

 

Cassidy also recounted a conversation with Tony Ornato, Trump's deputy chief of staff for operations, who, she testified, said Trump later grabbed at the steering wheel of the presidential SUV when the Secret Service refused to let him go to the Capitol after the rally.

 

That account was quickly disputed, however. Bobby Engel, the Secret Service agent who was driving Trump, and Ornato are willing to testify under oath that no agent was assaulted and Trump never lunged for the steering wheel, a person familiar with the matter said. The person would not discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

 

In recent days, the committee has subpoenaed former White House counsel Pat Cipollone and has been seeking more information from Ornato and Engel, who were previously interviewed by investigators.

 

Committee members hope Cipollone will come forward.

 

“He clearly has information about concerns about criminal violations, concerns about the president going to the Capitol that day, concerns about the chief of staff having blood on his hands if they didn’t do more to stop that violent attack on the Capitol,” Schiff said. “It's hard to imagine someone more at the center of things.”

 

The committee has also been working on setting up an interview with Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, the conservative activist and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. She was asked to speak to the committee after disclosures of her communications with Trump’s team in the run-up and day of the insurrection at the Capitol.

 

Kinzinger appeared on CNN's “State of the Union,” Schiff was on CBS' “Face the Nation" and Cheney appeared on ABC's “This Week."

If you still had any question as to whether Attorney General Merrick Garland was using the Department of Justice to persecute his political enemies and place his political allies above the law, look no further.

We previously discussed the cases of attorneys Colinford Mattis and Urooj Rahman, who were accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail into a police vehicle in New York. They were facing domestic terrorism charges and the possibility of 30 years in jail. This week, the Biden Administration agreed to a massive reduction of the charges in a plea agreement that will likely result only in a couple years of jail time. What is particularly bizarre is that the plea agreement reduces an earlier plea agreement for a more serious offense.

 

The plea deal by the Justice Department is a breathtaking reduction in the charges and expected sentencing of the two lawyers.

 

Earlier, some of us were surprised that U.S. District Judge Margo Brodie upheld the $250,000 bail determination of U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven Gold. Prosecutors presented evidence that the two attorneys were trying to distribute Molotov cocktails and suggested that Mattis did not appear rational. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reversed Judge Brodie and the two attorneys were sent back to jail. (Rahman's bail was paid for by friend and fellow attorney Salmah Rizvi, who served in the Defense Department and State Department during the Obama administration).

 

Notably, Rahman and Mattis pleaded guilty last year to one count of possessing and making an explosive device, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Now, however, they will be allowed to withdraw the earlier plea and instead plead guilty to conspiring to assemble the Molotov cocktail and damage the New York Police Department patrol car. That is a nosebleed of a drop in the severity and punishment for this violent attack.

 

It is a sharp contrast to the harsh position taken by the Biden Justice Department on many of those accused of rioting on January 6th. Attorney General Merrick Garland cited the threat to police officers in pledging an unprecedented effort to charge and convict those involved "on any level" in the riot.

 

Conspiring to assemble the Molotov cocktail and damage the New York Police Department patrol car does not quite capture what these two attorneys did during the violent riot in New York. Rahman was caught on video throwing the firebomb and then fleeing the scene. Colinford Mattis was accused of having a store of firebombs in his vehicle and was videotaped as he attempted to hand them out to other rioters to fuel further violence. Rahman later was unapologetic and declared to reporters that "the only way they hear us is through violence."

 

That does not seem the type of the suspects who would ordinarily garner deep sympathy from prosecutors. Yet, the Biden Administration walked back the charges, unraveled the earlier plea to a lesser offense, and told that court that the earlier charges would have resulted in "excessive sentencing" for the attorneys. Instead, they are supporting a maximum sentence of five years with a recommendation of between 18 to 24 months imprisonment.

"GOP Congresswoman Lauren Boebert plans to take action against a Democratic-aligned PAC she says made “false and derogatory” claims against her.

 

Boebert attorney Jonathan Anderson wrote to David Wheeler of American Muckrakers PAC on June 15, informing him of her intention to file a civil defamation suit against Wheeler and Muckrakers.

 

“This group’s vile conduct demonstrates why people are fed up with politics. I am not going to stand by and pretend this is normal behavior,” Boebert said in a statement. “This political committee, funded by far-left Democrat donors and run by two left-wing political operatives, published pages of false statements knowing they were completely fabricated. The law on this type of defamation is clear and this conduct will be subject to civil and criminal penalties.”

 

American Muckrakers has claimed that Boebert worked as a paid escort and had two abortions. The allegations were made by an anonymous person in a series of redacted text messages to the PAC.

 

The group has also alleged Boebert was involved in an off-roading accident that severely hurt a passenger, and questioned her husband’s work as a consultant in the oil and gas industry.

 

“We have irrefutable evidence that each one of these statements is patently false,” her attorney wrote.

 

He added that Wheeler could also be criminally liable, noting that Colorado law prohibits the circulation of “knowingly or recklessly” false information.

 

Anderson also accused Wheeler of making “multiple knowingly false statements” in letters to officials in Utah and Colorado that urged them to investigate the off-road accident and questions around Boebert’s large mileage reimbursement last year and a tax lien she paid off. That effort could create “substantial criminal liability” for the PAC, Anderson alleged.

 

Anderson did not respond to questions about when the suit would be filed or if he has made a complaint to the Attorney General’s office or Secretary of State’s office; Colorado law makes it a criminal offense to spread false information with the goal of influencing an election.

 

The Colorado Attorney General’s Office said it could not confirm whether it has received an official complaint.

 

While admitting some errors in Muckraker’s claims, such as originally giving the wrong year for the off-road accident and posting a photo of a woman that may not be Boebert, Wheeler is standing by the information he said he’s received.

 

“I've had messages with the source during the writing of this and she stands 100% by the information she sent us,” he said in a Tweet. He added the PAC won’t stop posting additional information about the controversial first-term congresswoman, but he will give it to her attorney for review prior to publication “to tell us why we shouldn’t post it. If they can prove it’s bogus, we won’t post it.”

 

The PAC came to national attention after it released a damaging video of another firebrand freshman congress member, Madison Cawthorn, which helped sink his reelection campaign. However, Cawthorne already had a number of troubling incidents on his record, including driving with a revoked license, announcing a run in another district before switching back to his current one, and making outrageous (and turns out false) claims that some of GOP colleagues in Washington were doing drugs and going to orgies.

 

The PAC announced shortly after Cawthorn’s primary defeat that they would look into Boebert.

 

In her run for reelection, Boebert is facing a primary challenge from state Sen. Don Coram, who is touting his rural and bipartisan credentials. The primary will be held on June 28."

“The World Was Tired of Haiti”: The 1994 U.S. Intervention

 

The United States found itself embroiled in several interventions in the 1990s that focused on upholding basic human rights standards and encouraging democratic regimes to flourish, from Somalia to the Balkans to America’s own backyard in the Caribbean. Despite Haiti being the second nation in the Western Hemisphere to proclaim independence, it has suffered from the beginning to establish an orderly and legitimate system of governance.

The coup represented a decisive step backward from the overall positive trend towards democratization in the region and led many in the U.S. to call for an intervention to restore human rights and democracy.

 

In October 1993, the Clinton administration dispatched the USS Harlan County to prepare for the return of Aristide, but it was met at the pier in Port-au-Prince by a mob of Haitians, appearing to threaten violence. With the street battle in Mogadishu only a week past, the administration proved unwilling to risk casualties in Port-au-Prince. The ship pulled away.

 

Four days later, the United Nations Security Council imposed a naval blockade on Haiti. Over the next several months the administration prepared for a full-scale invasion while pressuring the coup leaders to step down. More than $10 billion in fraudulent pandemic relief funds returned to U.S. government

 

There are at least 1,150 current ongoing OIG investigations into PPP, COVID-19 EIDL, and PUI fraud covering more than $2.4 billion in losses (THEY LOST TRILLIONS, NOT BILLIONS)

Ahead of a congressional subcommittee hearing being held Tuesday, the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis announced that over $10 billion worth of fraudulent payments made through federal pandemic relief programs has been recovered and returned to the federal government.

“These relief programs were vital to helping Americans in need during the economic crisis brought on by the coronavirus pandemic,” U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., chairman of the subcommittee, said. “However, as the Select Subcommittee reported last year, the Trump Administration failed to take basic steps to prevent expansive fraud against them. Under the Biden Administration, federal investigative and law enforcement agencies have been working hard to undo the damage and reclaim funds for the American taxpayer.”

However,federal agents under the Trump administration were investigating fraudulent payments as early as July 2020, within months of CARES Act funding first being distributed. The U.S. Department of Labor found that there were initially $26 billion worth of improper unemployment payments made as a result of CARES Act funding. Reports by the Office of Inspector General found that through multiple federal agencies, more than $100 billion worth of federal pandemic relief money was used for fraudulent purposes.

Ahead of Tuesday’s hearing, the subcommittee released new data obtained from the Department of Justice, Small Business Administration Office of Inspector General, Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, and United States Secret Service. It includes up-to-date figures on federal investigative and law enforcement agency efforts to reclaim fraudulently obtained taxpayer funds.

It reports that over $10 billion of fraudulent payments have been returned to the federal government, primarily paid through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan (COVID-19 EIDL).

Federal officials from U.S. Attorneys offices and the Department of Justice have criminally charged 1,481 defendants across 1,003 cases involving more than $1.07 billion in losses from PPP, COVID-19 EIDL, and Pandemic Unemployment Insurance (PUI), Clyburn announced.

There are at least 1,150 current ongoing OIG investigations into PPP, COVID-19 EIDL, and PUI fraud covering more than $2.4 billion in losses, according to the newly released data.

OIG investigations have also led to at least 1,200 indictments related to pandemic-related fraud, which have led to over 950 arrests and more than 450 convictions.

USSS investigators also opened more than 1,000 COVID-19 fraud-related cases in the past two years. Their efforts led to the seizure of more than $1 billion and roughly $86 million returned to crime victims.

Officials from the DOJ’s Fraud Enforcement, SBA, USSS, and others will testify about their efforts before the subcommittee on Tuesday.

Their discussion on federal efforts to prevent, detect and prosecute pandemic relief fraud will be livestreamed on YouTube and the Select Subcommittee website.

Problems with fraudulent payments made by federal agencies have been ongoing for many years. Most recently, in October 2016, the U.S. Department of Labor submitted a legislative package to Congress including proposed legislative changes that would help address Unemployment Insurance program integrity and high improper UI improper payment rates. These proposals were included in each of Trump’s budget requests since fiscal 2018, but Congress didn’t adopt them.

Additionally, improper payments made by federal government agencies totaled $175 billion in 2019, or $15 billion per month, according to PaymentAccuracy.gov, a website of the U.S. government. This was in addition to $2.25 trillion worth of taxpayer money spent on improper payments from 2004 to 2018, according to a Congressional Research Service brief on the Improper Payments Act.

Open the Books, a nonprofit government spending watchdog, has regularly published examples of federal waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer money. In 2020, it analyzed $2.3 trillion mistakenly spent by the U.S. government since 2004. …
