Conservative politician, Sir Graham Brady, has served as the MP for Altrincham and Sale West since 1997.

He has also been the chairman of the 1922 Committee since 2020, previously holding the position from 2010 to 2019.

Who is Sir Graham Brady?

Mr Brady was born in Salford, Lancashire and was educated at the Altrincham Grammar School for Boys.

He studied law at the University of Durham and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1989.

He was very politically driven as a student and served as chairman of the Durham University Conservative Association (DUCA) during the 1987 to 1988 academic year.

Mr Brady was one of six students elected to represent Durham at the annual NUS conference and served additionally as chairman of Northern Area Conservative Students (between 1987 and 1989) and as a member of the Conservative Party’s National Union Executive Committee between 1988 and 1989.

In 1989 he was given the consultant title in public relations with Shandwick plc and joined the Centre for Policy Studies in 1990.

Mr Brady was elected with a majority of 1,505 votes in the 1997 general election and was the youngest Conservative MP to be elected in 1997 as he was elected just before he turned 30.

In 1998, Mr Brady was one of just 13 Conservative MPs who voted in favour of an equal age of consent. He was a member of the executive of the 1922 Committee from 1998 to 2000.

He was a supporter of Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.

Mr Brady was appointed a Knight Bachelor ‘for political and public service’ in the 2018 New Year Honours.

He has previously voted against the Marriage (Same Sex couples) Act in 2013 and has publicly spoken out against the second Covid-19 lockdown.

Bond markets tend not to see big swings in value like stock markets do. But they do fluctuate, thanks mostly to changes in interest rates.

Points to know

As interest rates change, the values of bonds will fluctuate.

The bond markets are affected more by the interest rate environment than anything else.

Bonds are traded over the counter, not on exchanges.

A place to buy & sell bonds

To understand how the bond markets work, remember that a bond essentially represents an IOU—a promise to repay a loan on a certain date, along with specified interest payments along the way.

Prices and interest rates for an individual bond depend on a variety of factors, including positive or negative news about the issuer or changes in its credit rating.

But at a higher level, returns in the bond markets are much more related to interest rate changes—and perceptions about what will happen to interest rates in the future.

Why do interest rate changes move bond prices?

Imagine you loan your friend Jen $1,000. She agrees to pay you back in 1 year. She'll also give you monthly interest payments at a 5% interest rate. (So you'll earn $50 during the year.)

Then your friend Tom starts offering $1,000 loans at a 4% interest rate. You feel pretty good, because your loan is making you more money than what Tom's getting.

In fact, your loan is so attractive in comparison that if you want to sell it to someone—give them the rights to collect the interest payments and the $1,000 at the end of the year—you can actually charge a premium.

As you can see, when interest rates fall, the prices of existing bonds go up. And when interest rates rise, the opposite happens: If your loan is earning you less money than someone could make by giving a brand-new loan, they're going to pay less to buy your loan.

Why are bond markets more stable than stock markets?

You may be wondering why the values of stocks issued by certain companies will fluctuate much more than bonds issued by the same companies.

When companies issue bonds, they're contractually obligated to make the specified interest payments as promised, and to return the face value when the bond matures.

Defaulting on a bond is serious and will typically force a company into bankruptcy. (Even when a company goes bankrupt, bondholders will be repaid using company assets, if available.) So companies place a high priority on making timely bond payments.

Because the terms of a specific bond are known in advance, the value of that bond will usually fluctuate in a relatively narrow range as compared with stocks.

What else can shake up bond markets?

When investors are running scared from volatility in the stock market, they often move money into bonds. This pushes bond prices up, and (as we learned above) yields down.

Also, when expectations for future inflation are extremely low, this can cause a scenario in the bond markets known as an "inverted yield curve."

Normally, bonds with longer maturities have to offer higher interest rates to entice investors into tying up their money for a long time.

When the yield curve is inverted, bonds with shorter durations have to offer higher interest rates. This is because investors prefer to lock in the current yield for as long as possible, on the assumption that it will be a long time before yields are as good again.

Where & how are bonds traded?

Bond traders specialize in a certain type of bond—Treasuries, municipal bonds, or corporate bonds. Unlike with the stock market, there's no centralized exchange for bonds. All trading is done between individuals, so there's no giant "bond ticker" to show you trades in real time.

Because of the lack of transparency with bonds as compared with stocks, many or most investors could be better off if they invest in bonds through mutual funds or ETFs (exchange-traded funds) rather than by buying individual bonds.

As with stocks, there are many bond indexes that measure different types of bonds, but unlike with stocks, they're not widely reported in the general media. The benchmark number you're most likely to see is the current yield of the 10-year Treasury.

An illegal immigrant from Jamaica was recently arrested for using a fake ID to vote in Florida’s election, despite being a non-citizen and aconvicted felon

“The state Election Crime Unit has arrested a man who investigators say voted in Broward County but is living in the country illegally,” Florida Politics reported.

“Alfred Samuels voted in two Broward Special Elections this year, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE),” the report noted. “He registered to vote there in March 2021 under the alias Alford Nelson using a counterfeit birth certificate from New York City, according to police.”

“Samuels has gone by at least seven different aliases, according to the Department of Corrections, and has previously served prison time in prison for 11 felonies, including cocaine possession, selling/purchasing drugs within 1,000 feet of a school, resisting arrest with violence and trafficking cocaine,” the report added.

House Republicans have introduced legislation that some critics are describing as a national "Don't Say Gay" bill – inspired by the controversial Florida law that bans instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation in kindergarten through third grade classes.

If the federal bill were to become law, which is unlikely in the current Congress, its effects could be far more sweeping, affecting not just instruction in schools, but also events and literature at any federally-funded institution.

Here's what's in the bill – and what people are saying about it.

The bill's language is broad and consequential

The measure was introduced on Tuesday by Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., and co-sponsored by 32 other Republicans.

"The Democrat Party and their cultural allies are on a misguided crusade to immerse young children in sexual imagery and radical gender ideology," Johnson said in a statement, calling the bill "commonsense."

The bill, called the "Stop the Sexualization of Children Act," aims "To prohibit the use of Federal funds to develop, implement, facilitate, or fund any sexually-oriented program, event, or literature for children under the age of 10, and for other purposes."

The language in the proposed legislation lumps together topics of sexual orientation and gender identity, with sexual content such as pornography and stripping.

It would prohibit federal funds from being used to support any "sexually-oriented" programs, events, and literature; ban federal facilities from hosting or promoting such events or literature; and allow parents and guardians to sue government officials, agencies and private entities if a child under 10 is "exposed" to such materials.

The bill complains that some school districts have implemented sex ed programming for kids under 10, and that "[m]any newly implemented sexual education curriculums encourage discussion of sexuality, sexual orientation, transgenderism, and gender ideology as early as kindergarten." It also calls out events such as drag queen story hours in libraries, which it describes as "sexually-oriented."

The bill follows GOP-driven "parental rights" measures in Florida and elsewhere

The proposed federal measure is framed in terms of parents' rights, a rallying cry on the right that in the last couple years has included battles against schools' COVID-19 vaccine requirements and fervent activism against critical race theory in classrooms.

The bill's prospects are nil while Democrats control the White House and Senate

The bill would not pass in the current Congress, given that such legislation is solely a Republican effort and Democrats have a functional majority in each chamber.

Depending on the November election results, the makeup of the House and Senate could shift. Still, it's not clear how many Republicans would support the bill, even if it is popular among a certain strain of the party.

Even if the proposed legislation were to pass in a Republican-controlled House and Senate, it would be vetoed by President Biden. So don't expect this bill to go anywhere, for at least a while.

LGBTQ groups condemn the bill and warn against its potential effects

The Human Rights Campaign, which advocates for the rights of LGBTQ people, decried the proposed legislation.

"Extremist House Republicans like Mike Johnson are continuing their assault on LGBTQ+ Americans' ability to live their lives openly and honestly. A federal 'Don't Say Gay or Trans' bill … is their latest cruel attempt to stigmatize and marginalize the community, not in an attempt to solve actual problems but only to rile up their extremist base," Human Rights Campaign Government Affairs Director David Stacy said in a statement.

Activist Erin Reed, who tracks anti-transgender legislation, argues that the comparison to a "Don't Say Gay" bill minimizes the potential effects of this proposed legislation.

"Don't Say Gay/Trans was focused on 'classroom instruction' which was bad enough," she wrote on Twitter. "This goes WAY beyond the classroom, and WAY beyond 'instruction.' "

Lifelong, career Democrat in New York endorses Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin.

Former New York state assemblyman and “lifelong Democrat” Dov Hikind threw his support behind Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin, who is campaigning to be governor of New York, arguing that only Zeldin can “save our state” from the “disastrous” Democrat governor as well as the “rampant” crime and “tanking” economy.

Hikind, who served as assistant majority leader in the Democratic-controlled state legislature, recently announced his support for Zeldin, a Republican congressman from Long Island, claiming it was preferable to casting a vote for “the disastrous Kathy Hochul.” He says he is “sick and tired of rampant crime and the Democrats’ hurtful economic policies.”

On the latest episode of his eponymous YouTube show, Hikind called on fellow New Yorkers to take advantage of the “historic opportunity” next month to “defeat the radical policies of the Democrat Party” in New York.

Despite being a longtime Democrat, Hikind warned that without change there would be “no future” for the residents of New York state.

“I’m not speaking as a lifelong Democrat, but as a concerned New Yorker who knows that if we do not make change to our leadership, there is no future for our kids, our families in this great state,” he said.

Claiming that Gov. Hochul “has failed us on every single level,” Hikind stated she is “hiding” from crucial issues.

“You can’t even find her, she’s hiding,” he said. “Does anyone have any clue where she is on the most important issues?”

Hikind, a renowned Jewish rights activist and founder of the advocacy group Americans Against Antisemitism, argued there is “no choice” but to support Zelden for governor of New York.

“Things cannot continue as they are because if they do, you and I both know that there is no future in this great state of ours, and Lee Zeldin is the answer,” he said.

Hikind concluded by suggesting the issue is beyond political affiliations.

“This is not about being a Democrat, Republican, independent — it’s irrelevant,” he said. “We need to vote for the person who will make a difference, who will save our state — and that is Lee Zeldin.”

A new poll from Tuesday revealed Zeldin is within “striking distance” of Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) in New York’s gubernatorial race as crime is ranked as voters’ top issue heading into election day.

In the final weeks of the gubernatorial race, Zeldin is running just four points behind Hochul, who takes 50 percent to the Republican congressman’s 46 percent, the Quinnipiac University poll shows, with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points.

This represents a major shift in favor of Zeldin, as a Marist College poll released last week found the Republican behind by ten percentage points. Likewise, days ago, election analysts at RealClearPolitics moved the race from “Lean Democrat” to “Toss-up.”

Most significantly, Zeldin leads Hochul, 57 percent to 37 percent, among swing voters, and he leads upstate New York voters with 52 percent to Hochul’s 44 percent.

In deeply liberal New York City, Hochul leads with 59 percent to Zeldin’s 37 percent.

In August, Hikind blasted Gov. Hochul for “trying to score political points with the progressive flank of the Democratic Party” after she used a Holocaust education event to attack Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).
