Igor Danchenko has been found not guilty of providing false statements to federal officials in the course of their “investigation” into the Steele Dossier. After count 1 was dismissed (the Charles Dolan count), these charges remained:

・Count 2. March 16, 2017: Danchenko told FBI agents he received a call in late July 2016 from a person he thought was Sergei Millian, when Danchenko knew he had never received a call from Millian.

・Count 3. May 18, 2017: Danchenko gave a false statement to FBI agents that he “was under the impression” that the late July 2016 call was from Millian.

・Count 4. October 24, 2017: Danchenko falsely stated to FBI agents that he believed he spoke to Millian on the phone on more than one occasion.

・Count 5. November 16, 2017: Danchenko lied that he “believed he has spoken to [Millian] on the telephone,” when Danchenko well knew he had never spoken to Millian.

That’s the difficulty of proving a false statements case when the FBI and the Mueller Special Counsel were uninterested in pursuing the truth.

On Monday, Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel spoke with Yahoo Finance’s Anjalee Khemlani at the 2022 Yahoo Finance All Markets Summit.

During the course of their discussion, Bancel admitted that COVID-19 is going to be very similar to the seasonal flu. He also suggested that persons aged 50 and older as well as those who are in vulnerable categories should consider receiving a booster shot.

Below is the transcript:

Anjalee Khemlani: Is the COVID vaccine going to be an annual COVID booster for a very long time to come or maybe for the rest of our lives? And how do you merge that with the fact that there is already low uptake of this new variant booster?

Stephane Bancel: I think it’s interesting the uptake is actually stronger than seasonal flu from data I’ve seen recently. So we have to see before the end of the season, what does it look like? It’s the first time we’re going to be more in the pandemic setting, so I think we’ll be smarter…

So it is a better update than seasonal flu shot. I think it’s going to be flu, which is again, if you’re 25 years old, you’ll need an annual booster every year. If you’re healthy, you might want it to protect other people. You might want it because you don’t want to get sick and miss work or miss vacation or so on.

But I think it’s going to be very similar to flu, where the kids will be people at high risk, people above 50 years of age, people with comorbidity, people with cancer and other conditions… And that’s really important to think about. And if you look at it around the world, that is 1.5 billion people. So it’s a lot of people that’s going to need an annual booster and people that are younger going to have to decide for themselves what they want to do.

Life expectancy rises in parts of Europe as U.S. still trends down post-COVID, study finds

Life expectancy rates started to rebound last year in multiple countries throughout Europe following their COVID-19-era dip in 2020, according to a new study.

The study, titled “Life expectancy changes since COVID-19” and published Monday in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, looked at life expectancy rates for 29 countries that included most of Europe, the U.S. and Chile.

Researchers found that eight countries made significant strides in improving their life expectancy during 2021, including Belgium, England, France, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales.

But a large number of countries in Eastern Europe — such as Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary — were found to share in the U.S.’ struggles (third-largest decline overall) with improving life expectancy deficits. Germany, Scotland and Northern Ireland in Western Europe also saw a downward trend in the metric, albeit at less severe rates.

The study said that a lack of vaccination, especially in those under 60 years old, is thought to have contributed to some countries’ declining life expectancy. It also suggested that the U.S.’ life expectancy rate will continue its slump.

“Everyone was hit in 2020 … 2020 was about policy response and 2021 becomes a story of vaccination, and the U.S. was not a success story,” Theresa Andrasfay, a gerontology scholar at the University of Southern California who is not affiliated with the study, told USA Today.

California to end COVID emergency order in February

California will wind down its COVID-19 state of emergency by the end of February.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the move Monday, saying that he wants to keep the emergency order in place through the winter so the state’s health care system has the resources to address any potential surge.

“The State of Emergency was an effective and necessary tool that we utilized to protect our state, and we wouldn’t have gotten to this point without it,” Mr. Newsom said in a statement. “With the operational preparedness that we’ve built up and the measures that we’ll continue to employ moving forward, California is ready to phase out this tool.”

Once the pandemic ends, California will shift to its “SMARTER Plan” to address any COVID-related challenges going forward, the governor’s office said.

The plan advocates for people to stay up to date on booster shots, get tested and wear a mask when necessary, and follow the latest news on new variants that may come along.

California is one of a handful of states that still have active COVID emergencies.

Delaware renewed its COVID emergency order just last week.

Texas renewed its own COVID emergency declaration last month, while Kansas extended emergency powers via legislation through January 2023 and West Virginia has maintained its original public health emergency from March 2020.

Washington state’s COVID emergency will end on Oct. 31, while Rhode Island and Illinois will have their COVID emergencies active through Nov. 11 and Nov. 14, respectively, unless they are renewed.

The Internal Revenue Service on Tuesday announced rule adjustments to account for inflation for the 2023 tax year, including shifts for tax brackets and the standard deduction.

The IRS releases inflation adjustments annually, but this year’s announcement comes amid heightened economic concerns about high inflation and a potential recession.

The adjustments apply to the 2023 tax year, for which tax returns will generally be filed in 2024. They’re aimed at warding off “bracket creep,” when salary increases aimed at accounting for a higher cost of living end up pushing taxpayers into higher tax brackets.

The standard deduction will increase by $1,800 for married couples filing jointly, by $1,400 for heads of households, and by $900 for single taxpayers and married taxpayers filing separately.

The income thresholds for tax brackets are among the provision changes “of greatest interest to most taxpayers,” according to the IRS. The tax rates themselves are unchanged from last year, ranging from 10 percent to 37 percent, but the income cutoffs have shifted.

The top rate of 37 percent applies to individual single taxpayers with income over $578,125 and married couples filing jointly with income over $693,750 — figures up from last year’s $539,900 and $647,850, respectively.

How to prepare for a potential recession in 2023

The lowest rate of 10 percent applies to single taxpayers with income $11,000 or less and married couples filing jointly with income $22,000 or less — up from last year’s $10,275 and $20,550, respectively.

A single taxpayer making $90,000 in the 2022 tax year would face a top tax rate of 32 percent, while the same income in the 2023 year will face a top rate of 24 percent.

Other announced IRS changes also affect the Earned Income Tax Credit, estate taxes and flexible spending accounts, among other provisions.

the process is simple.

the code changes every 30 seconds.

it shows you with a count down when it will expire.

so compose your post, then copy the code from the authenticator (authentigator) again.

When you post if the count is very low, then wait till the count rolls over, and then, with 30 seconds, you ought to be able to get your post in.

you need to copy the code for every post, so it's annoying, like the captcha used to be (when it got to be for every post) but it works very well.)
