An FX swap agreement is a contract in which one party borrows one currency from, and simultaneously lends another to, the second party. Each party uses the repayment obligation to its counterparty as collateral and the amount of repayment is fixed at the FX forward rate as of the start of the contract. Thus, FX swaps can be viewed as FX risk-free collateralised borrowing/lending. The chart below illustrates the fund flows involved in a euro/US dollar swap as an example. At the start of the contract, A borrows X·S USD from, and lends X EUR to, B, where S is the FX spot rate. When the contract expires, A returns X·F USD to B, and B returns X EUR to A, where F is the FX forward rate as of the start.

FX swaps have been employed to raise foreign currencies, both for financial institutions and their customers, including exporters and importers, as well as institutional investors who wish to hedge their positions. They are also frequently used for speculative trading, typically by combining two offsetting positions with different original maturities. FX swaps are most liquid at terms shorter than one year, but transactions with longer maturities have been increasing in recent years. For comprehensive data on recent developments in turnover and outstanding in FX swaps and crosscurrency swaps, see BIS (2007).

A cross-currency basis swap agreement is a contract in which one party borrows one currency from another party and simultaneously lends the same value, at current spot rates, of a second currency to that party. The parties involved in basis swaps tend to be financial institutions, either acting on their own or as agents for non-financial corporations. The chart below illustrates the flow of funds involved in a euro/US dollar swap. At the start of the contract, A borrows X·S USD from, and lends X EUR to, B. During the contract term, A receives EUR 3M Libor α from, and pays USD 3M Libor to, B every three months, where α is the price of the basis swap, agreed upon by the counterparties at the start of the contract. When the contract expires, A returns X·S USD to B, and B returns X EUR to A, where S is the same FX spot rate as of the start of the contract. Though the structure of cross-currency basis swaps differs from FX swaps, the former basically serve the same economic purpose as the latter, except for the exchange of floating rates during the contract term.

Cross-currency basis swaps have been employed to fund foreign currency investments, both by financial institutions and their customers, including multinational corporations engaged in foreign direct investment. They have also been used as a tool for converting currencies of liabilities, particularly by issuers of bonds denominated in foreign currencies. Mirroring the tenor of the transactions they are meant to fund, most cross-currency basis swaps are long-term, generally ranging between one and 30 years in maturity.

Prior to the turn of the century, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a formative decision that helped craft the contours of Section 230 immunity. The case — Zeran v. America Online — dealt with a tricky question: whether or not a platform’s failure to moderate content (in this case, posts that contained Zeran’s phone number and oblique accusations he approved of the Oklahoma City federal building bombing) made the platform liable for the user-generated content.

The Appeals Court didn’t have much to work with at that point. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act was less than a year old at the time Kenneth Zeran filed his lawsuit against AOL. Nevertheless, the court recognized AOL’s immunity from the suit. And it did this by applying the new CDA clause retroactively to apply to alleged wrongs against Zeran that were committed nearly a year before the CDA went into effect.

Flash-forward more than a quarter century, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals has delivered another potentially groundbreaking decision [PDF], albeit one that goes the other direction to hold a website directly responsible for content posted by others.

In this case, the plaintiffs and their class action lawsuit sought to hold Public Data, LLC directly responsible for content it gathers from other sources and republishes on its own platforms. The data collected by Public Data (the name the court uses to collectively refer to the multiple parties collecting and disseminating this data) comes from public records. This includes civil and criminal court proceedings, voting records, driver data, professional licensing information, and anything else generated by government agencies Public Data can hoover up.

It then consolidates the data to make it more user-friendly, reformatting raw documents to deliver snapshots of people Public Data’s customers wish to obtain info about. The plaintiffs allege this process often removes exonerative data about criminal charges and reduces criminal background info to little more than a list of charges (with no data on whether these charges resulted in a conviction). Making things worse, Public Data’s summaries apparently include “glib statements” that misrepresent the entirety of the data collected from public sources. Public Data makes it clear to users that it is not responsible for any inaccuracies in the raw data it collects and collates. It also refuses to correct incorrect data or remove any inaccurate information it has scraped from public records databases.

The value of this information — no matter how inaccurate or incomplete — is undeniable. The plaintiffs note that Public Data has nearly 50 million customers. And presumably few of those customers take the repackaging of scraped data — with or without Public Data’s commentary — with a grain of salt, despite the cautionary statements issued by Public Data.

This all sounds like the collection and republication of data generated by third-parties. What is or isn’t passed onto users sounds pretty much like content moderation, something that’s not only protected by Section 230 immunity, but the First Amendment as well. Since those are the most obvious impediments to the lawsuit, the plaintiffs have chosen to frame this repackaging of data (and Public Data’s editorial decisions) as violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

The Appeals Court should have recognized this tactic for what it was. Instead, it decides the acts the lawsuit is predicated on are somehow exempt from Section 230 immunity. Eric Goldman, who has a long history of covering Section 230 cases and advocating for its continued existence, saw this disturbing decision coming a long time ago, back when the lower court decided Section 230 immunity applied but did so in a way that invited novel interpretations of this protection…

The plaintiff sued the defendant for violating four provisions of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). At its core, the FCRA is in tension with Section 230 because it seemingly regulates the dissemination of third-party content (i.e., the credit data provided by vendors). However, many FCRA provisions are ministerial in nature about how to operate a credit reporting agency, and those provisions may not specifically base liability for credit report dissemination even if the overall statutory objective relates to that output. This makes the FCRA/230 interface ambiguous and confusing.

The district court dismissed the lawsuit on Section 230 grounds in a garbled and controversial opinion. As I predicted then, the district court’s “distorted Section 230 test makes this ruling vulnerable on appeal or in further proceedings.” And here we are.

And that’s what has happened here. Ignoring its own Zeranprecedent, the court starts imposing new rules on Section 230 immunity, utilizing the plaintiff’s Fair Credit Reporting Act allegations as the baseline. The court says there’s a possible defamation claim here because it apparently believes liability attaches to publishers of third-party content when the republished content is “improper.”

That’s definitely wrong. And it sounds like the court wants to believe there’s a publisher/platform dichotomy that makes Section 230 irrelevant, even though the law itself makes no such distinction when it comes to content created by third parties.

To arrive at this tortured conclusion, the court says a whole lot about the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which does indeed pose penalties on reporting agencies that aren’t careful about ensuring the accuracy of the information they collect or disseminate. But that has little to do with Public Data’s business model, which simply collects public records from public sites to find relevant information about people its customers wish to know more about.

That isn’t the same thing and the court should know this. Instead, it seemingly decides that FCRA reporting requirements apply and Section 230 doesn’t. And then it says things about the commentary Public Data attaches to public record data, claiming that this goes beyond protected editorial functions and turns Public Data into a culpable partner in the dissemination of false information. Here’s Goldman, summarizing this particularly dangerous conclusion:

The court summarizes its legal standard as:

an interactive computer service is not responsible for developing the unlawful information unless they have gone beyond the exercise of traditional editorial functions and materially contributed to what made the content unlawful.

This adopts an obvious false dichotomy. Materially contributing to third-party content is a “traditional editorial function,” so this distinction is incoherent. This legal standard invites plaintiffs to define “traditional editorial functions” to exclude whatever defense behavior they are targeting. The chaos is palpable. (The scope of “traditional editorial functions” is a question presented in Gonzalez, so the Supreme Court will almost certainly make a worse hash of this term by June).

If you don’t see the problem here, Goldman explains further:

When a 230 defendant republishes third-party content verbatim and without redaction, this standard is fine. But 230 defendants routinely extract pieces of a third-party submission–sometimes as promotional previews, sometimes to fit publication constraints. 230(c)(1) has applied in so many cases fitting that paradigm (People v. Ferrer represents an outer extreme), yet future plaintiffs can argue that any piece excluded from the extract creates a deceptive omission and VOILA! Bye bye 230.

So, for example, Google’s search results descriptions republishes extracts from the source website. This has qualified for Section 230 (e.g., O’Kroley v. Fastcase). This court is saying that 230 would not apply if the plaintiff claims the search results description left behind contextualizing information, which will happen ALL THE TIME. Boom–all of Google search descriptions are now potentially outside Section 230.

That’s where the Fourth Circuit Appeals court leaves, practically daring Public Data to appeal the decision and place it in the hands of a Supreme Courtthat is far too willing these days to upend rights and protections recently appointed justices just don’t care for.

The Dutch government plans to buy and close down up to 3,000 farms near environmentally sensitive areas to comply with EU nature preservation rules.

The Netherlands is attempting to cut down its nitrogen pollution and will push ahead with compulsory purchases if not enough farms take up the offer voluntarily.

Farmers will be offered a deal “well over” the worth of the farm, according to the government plan that is targeting the closure of 2,000 to 3,000 farms or other major polluting businesses.

Earlier leaked versions of the plan put the figure at 120 per cent of the farm’s value but that figure has not yet been confirmed by ministers.

The bill modifies the tax treatment of derivatives to (1) require mark to market treatment (treating the contracts as if they had been terminated or transferred at fair market value at the end of the year) for derivatives not terminated or transferred during the year, (2) require gains and losses to be taxed at ordinary tax rates and sourced to the taxpayer's country of residence, and (3) revise the reporting requirements and tax rules that apply to taxpayers that use derivatives to hedge capital assets.

‘Operation Bronze Griffin’: House GOP report says Facebook giving FBI ‘partisan’ tips

WASHINGTON — The FBI has a politically one-sided surveillance partnership with Facebook under the apparent name Operation Bronze Griffin, according to a bombshell report released Friday by Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee.

The 1,050-page report broadly outlines the FBI’s alleged pro-Democrat political bias — just days after revelations of a secret Facebook portal through which authorities can request the deletion of alleged “misinformation” from the world’s top social media platform.

“As part of a program likely codenamed ‘Operation Bronze Griffin,’ the FBI allegedly accepts private user information from Facebook, but without the user’s consent or the legal process the FBI would otherwise need to independently pursue such user-related information,” the report says.

“Furthermore, according to whistleblower information, the types of user content that Facebook provides have a partisan focus, tending only to concern users from one side of the political spectrum,” the document continues.

“The FBI’s willingness to accept this political speech information from Facebook — outside of routine investigative pathways — further threatens Americans’ constitutional rights.”

The FBI would not confirm or deny the existence of Operation Bronze Griffin, but denied being politically biased.

“Put quite simply: we follow the facts without regard for politics,” an FBI spokesperson told The Post. “While outside opinions and criticism often come with the job, we will continue to follow the facts wherever they lead, do things by the book, and speak through our work.”

Facebook spokesman Andy Stone, a former Democratic staffer who announced Facebook’s 2020 plans to reduce distribution of The Post’s scoops on documents from Hunter Biden’s laptop, also declined to confirm or deny the existence of Operation Bronze Griffin.

“On whether [Operation Bronze Griffin] exists, I’d refer you to the FBI,” Stone said before adding: “Any suggestion we seek out peoples’ private information on a partisan basis to provide it to the FBI is false and there is zero evidence to support it.”

The allegation comes on the heels of a Monday report by The Intercept that exposed an online gateway through which authorities with a government or law enforcement email address reportedly can request the removal of “misinformation” from Facebook or Instagram.

Credit Suisse shares rise after reports of Saudi Crown Prince interest in IB stake

Investing.com – Shares in Credit Suisse Group AG (SIX:CSGN) climbed on Monday on a Wall Street Journal report that Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and U.S. private equity investors are preparing to build stakes in the lender's new investment bank.

Sources close to the matter told the paper that Prince Mohammed is mulling over an investment of around $500 million in the unit, known as Credit Suisse First Boston. The spin-off of the New York-based division comes as Credit Suisse is looking to restructure its operations and raise $4.2B in fresh stock following a series of scandals, regulatory issues, and weak financial performance.

The WSJ added that it is unclear if Prince Mohammed will make the investment through Saudi National Bank, which is already set to become the largest shareholder in Credit Suisse after the stock sale, or via a separate vehicle. Prince Mohammed is also the chairman of Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, Public Investment Fund.

Riyadh's interest reportedly stems from CS First Boston's decision to tap well-known dealmaker Michael Klein as CEO-designate, the WSJ said. Klein has built strong connections with the kingdom, following his involvement with major business initiatives like the initial public offering of Saudi Arabian Oil Co. in 2019.

However, no firm investment offer has been sent by any Saudi entity to Credit Suisse yet, the WSJ reported.

People close to the discussions also told the WSJ that further backing could come from various U.S. investors, including high-profile banker Bob Diamond's Atlas Merchant Capital. It has previously said that it has secured a commitment of $500M from an unidentified investor.

Credit Suisse chairman Axel Lehmann said last week that it will take around two years for CS First Boston to become fully independent, with analysts predicting that the process will be drawn-out and complex.

A Ukrainian drone strike on two Russian airbases in the Ryazan and Saratov regions has resulted in the deaths of three service members and minor damage to two airplanes, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday.

FBI Warned Twitter Of 'Hack-And-Leak' Operation Before Hunter Biden Story Censored

Facebook wasn't the only company that received a tap on the shoulder from the FBI shortly before the New York Post's Hunter Biden laptop bombshell.

According to a declaration filed with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) in December 2020, the FBI and several other agencies warned Twitter's former head of Site Integrity, Yoel Roth, that "state actors" may attempt to leak hacked materials shortly before the 2020 election in an effort to influence the results.

According to Roth, the conversation happened during weekly meetings with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI.

"These expectations of hack-and-leak operations were discussed throughout 2020. I also learned in these meetings that there were rumors that a hack-and-leak operation would involve Hunter Biden," Roth claimed in the declaration.

As the Daily Caller notes, it's unclear when the discussion between Roth and the intelligence agencies occurred - but on Oct. 14, 2020 Twitter prohibited the story from being shared under the platform's former "hacked materials" policy.

As we knew from the beginning based on the Post's original reporting, the answer is much less nefarious; Hunter Biden, a crackhead, abandoned his laptop at a Wilmington, Delaware repair shop on April 12, 2019. The owner, John Paul Mac Isaac, walked into the Albuquerque FBI office, where he explained what he had, but was rebuffed by agents. He was told basically, get lost. This was mid-September 2019.

The statement also comes on the heels of an 11th circuit appeals court ruling that removed the court ordered ‘Special Master’ in the Trump Mar-a-Lago documents case.

In the Mar-a-Lago case the 11th circuit court stated if the search warrant was legally predicated, and if the search warrant was legally executed, then all of the proceeds from the search warrant were legally valid as investigative outcomes – and no special master is needed. However, President Trump is not allowed to see the search warrant, nor are his lawyers allowed to see the predicate affidavit that underpins the search warrant, and they are not permitted to see what documents were seized by the FBI.

In essence, if the secret and general warrant was legal, then all seizure is legal, but you are not allowed to see the secret and general warrant. Former AG Eric Holder rejoices in this judicial ruling as he evaluates the ability of the nation to “absorb” an arrest of Donald Trump based on that justice system position.

If you read between the lines, and know how Holder (Obama Inc) operate, you can see what Obama structured Deputy AG Lisa Monaco has to do. [Transcript] – MARGARET BRENNAN: We turn now to former Attorney General Eric Holder. He now heads up the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. And he has a book, “Our Unfinished March,” which examines the current state of America’s democracy. Welcome back to the program.

ERIC HOLDER: Good to see you, Margaret.

MARGARET BRENNAN: I have a number of things I want to get to with you. But I want to start on something I know is immediate this week. An organization that you run that we mentioned here that focuses on redistricting is involved in a Supreme Court case, Moore v. Harper. It’s going to be heard on the seventh of this week. And it boils down as I understand it to the question of what the Constitution means when it assigns state legislatures the task of regulating elections. That sounds really wonky, but you phrased it as the future of democracy being at stake. What are you worried is actually going to happen here?

HOLDER: Yeah, this case is all about something called the independent state legislature doctrine. It’s a fringe theory that North Carolina Republicans are trying to use to make sure that the North Carolina Republican legislature has the sole responsibility of doing redistricting in the state and excluding from that determination the state court system. It is something that if the Supreme Court goes along with it, would really upend our system of checks and balances. And it’s for that reason that I am extremely concerned. It is a fringe theory, this is something that if the Court I think does the right thing, you should have a nine to zero opinion by the court that rejects this notion of this independent state legislature doctrine that has been rejected by conservative scholars, by practicing Republican lawyers, by former Republican judges, and by this conference of state supreme court justices, as well. This is a very, very dangerous theory. It would put our system of checks and balances at risk.

MARGARET BRENNAN: So there were a number of Democratic senators who actually filed a brief urging the Supreme Court not even to hear the case. So there are some heavy hitters here saying don’t even talk about it. What does that tell you about the potential harm here? I mean, is there value in the Supreme Court hearing this and striking it down? Or does them hearing it at all indicate something more to you?

HOLDER: Yeah, it’s hard for me to see how this case was ever taken by the Court. I think the better thing would have been for the court to simply have rejected it. But now having taken the case, I would hope that the Court would drive a stake through this notion of this independent state legislature doctrine and get it off the- off the books and out of our consideration, once and for all. It truly is, I cannot emphasize this enough. It truly is a fringe theory that should result in a nine to zero rejection of the- of the theory.

MARGARET BRENNAN: So we mentioned you’re working on redistricting. Democrats are suing to overturn congressional maps in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Ohio and Texas. I read a quote from you in the Washington Post that said the work you’ve been doing on redistricting has paid off in the most recent midterms. Do you think that your legal battles will help Democrats make gains in 2024? What are you trying to say there?

HOLDER: Yeah, I think that what we have seen, there been studies that said that we have had the most fair redistricting process in the last 40 years as a result of the work that we’ve done. 75% of the redistricting is considered to be fair, which also means that 25% of it is unfair, and that is still problematic. I think, for instance, the House of Representatives is going to be in play for the entirety of this decade, very contrary to where it was in the past decade where after the successful Republican gerrymandering that occurred in 2011 and in 2012, it was really difficult for Democrats to take the House back. I think Democrats will be able to take the House back as early as 2024. But it doesn’t ensure what we have done doesn’t ensure the Democrats are going to hold on to the House for the entirety of the decade. It will be for the American people to decide. Fairness will reign in that determination.

MARGARET BRENNAN: When you were last on this program in May you shared at the time that you had changed your mind recently that you did believe that the Justice Department and Attorney General Merrick Garland should hold former President Trump accountable for his actions. You previously thought it would be too divisive for the country. Now, where we are with this special counsel, what is your assessment? And how should Merrick Garland, who has to ultimately decide, weigh the question of a risk to political violence in this country from any decision he makes regarding the former president?

HOLDER: Well, I think the Attorney General has said it quite well, that he’ll make the determination without fear or favor. There is- Everybody has to be held accountable for the same system. The determination that he’s going to have to make will have to be based on the facts and the law. And we’ll just have to deal with the consequences. The reality is that if he makes a determination one way or the other, it is going to be divisive. And so the best thing simply is to make sure that everybody who is under consideration for possible criminal treatment, including the former president, is treated just like every other American. And that’s what that opinion out of the Circuit Court this week essentially said that you can’t craft things. As a district court judge you can’t craft things for a former president that don’t exist for regular American citizens. Treat everybody in the same way, make the determination based on the facts and the law. And the United States, I think, has the capacity to absorb a possible indictment and to deal with it fairly and to get on with the business of the country.

MARGARET BRENNAN: As someone who’s been an attorney general, I wonder as well, how you think about the case before the U.S. District Attorney in Delaware regarding President Biden’s son Hunter. CBS has reported the FBI has sufficient evidence to charge him with tax and gun related crimes. How would you handle this? A plea deal? Is the Attorney General boxed in to take a hard-line position because of working for the President?

HOLDER: No, I mean, you have- they left in place, the Republican, the Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney in Delaware to consider the case. You’ve got career lawyers working on it, career FBI agents. You want to listen to their recommendations and then again, make a determination based on the facts and the law. The defendant should not be treated any more harshly because of who he is, who he is related to, should not be given breaks because of who he is or who he is related to. He should be treated as former President Trump should be treated, just like any other American citizen. If there is culpability, that person should be held liable for his or her acts. And if there is not a basis for a case, a case should not be brought.

MARGARET BRENNAN: But it will ultimately come to the Attorney General’s desk.

HOLDER: That’s certainly the way I would have run the Justice Department. And my guess is also that that would be something that Merrick Garland will be doing as well. That determination will be made I suspect in Washington, D.C.

On Monday Breitbart reported that Mitch McConnell joined with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to add the JCPA Big Media Bailout Bill to the Defense Authorization Act that will be voted on this month.

According to Breitbart, the JCPA is a transfer of wealth from Silicon Valley to Big Media — the same people who have been lying to the American public about every major story since 2016.

The bill will also allow Big Media to form a joint entity to suppress content from independent competitors.

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell has caved to outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and will allow the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to include the highly controversial media cartel bill the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA), sources familiar with the matter told Breitbart News.

Over objections from House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy, the likely next Speaker of the House come Jan. 3 of next year, other congressional leaders acquiesced to lobbyist pressure and agreed to include the JCPA in the base text of the NDAA. McCarthy was the only member of Congressional leadership to fight back against the inclusion, but was overruled three to one after McConnell caved.

The JCPA has absolutely nothing to do with national defense, so the move—a swan song of sorts for Pelosi, who just announced she is leaving congressional leadership but retaining her House seat after Democrats lost the majority to the GOP in the midterm elections—is an egregious step for an outgoing leader of the past against precedent as the NDAA has generally been reserved just for national security matters…

…The JCPA, essentially a transfer of wealth from Silicon Valley to the discredited and distrusted corporate legacy media, is highly controversial. Beyond the financial payouts to media companies, they will be able to form a “joint negotiating entity” — a cartel, immune from antitrust law — to negotiate with Big Tech companies on the “terms and conditions” for carrying their content.

Censorship is sure to be a frequent demand of media companies. Despite provisions in the bill that purportedly stop media companies from negotiating the suppression of any one competitor, there is nothing to stop them asking their content to be prioritized over broadly-drawn categories that are used as pretexts for censorship, like “disinformation.”

REFERENCE and CONTEXT is critical to understanding.

PHASE 1 – After Eric Holder left the Obama administration as Attorney General, he was hired by the State of California to defend against the Trump administration in early January 2017 (LINK).

Why?

When Eric Holder left the Obama administration, his firm was contracted by California during a process of linking the motor vehicle registration files to the Secretary of State voter registration system. Holder was advising on part of a technology system being constructed to bridge the DMV and SoS offices. You might know this as a “Motor/Voter” process. However, former AG Eric Holder had a very specific function in the construction of this technology bridge.

The process of adding voters to the registration rolls when they receive or update their driver’s license was seen as an opportunity to expand the voter rolls. Making the voter rolls as big as possible is the key to the utilization of mass mail-out balloting. I will skip the part where California started giving illegal aliens drivers licenses for a moment – you can obviously see how that would play with motor/voter rolls – instead I am choosing just to focus on the specifics of the Holder aspect.

The DMV needed to connect to the SoS office. This was simply a part of a tech system that needed to be built. CTH has previously spoken with the lead engineer, a member of a very small technology group, who worked in the California information technology (IT) unit that was tasked with building the system that connected the DMV to the SOS. [NOTE: I invite the state of California to sue me as they will likely claim what you are about to read is not true.]

In the process of connecting the two state networks together, there needed to be a “flag”, essentially a check box, where the applicant to the DMV would attest to being legally authorized to vote. It is a positive affirmation, a check box, that says the Driver’s License holder affirms they are legally eligible to vote. That affirmation (the technical flag in the process), when affirmed, then transmits the information to the SoS office with the DL operator identity, and the California driver is automatically added to the SoS rolls and registered to vote.

During the time when Eric Holder was the legal counsel for the California Secretary of State, the technology team was constructing the internal data processing systems.

The lead engineer in the unit was instructed to code the data transfer in such a way that even if the “check box” was left unchecked, the registration data would transmit from the DMV to the SoS office.

Essentially, instead of only those who affirmed their legal eligibility by checking the box, everyone -including those who did not check the box- would get a DL and would automatically have their information transmitted to the SoS office. Everyone who received a driver’s license or state issued id was automatically going to be registered to vote, regardless of their legally authorized status. That request led the engineer to contact me.

Arizona Certifies Rigged 2022 Election, Declares Katie Hobbs Winner

Arizona on Monday officially certified the rigged 2022 election.

Democrat Katie Hobbs, who oversaw her own election as Secretary of State, was declared the winner.

“Arizona had a successful election,” Hobbs said. “But too often throughout the process, powerful voices proliferated misinformation that threatened to disenfranchise voters. Democracy prevailed, but it’s not out of the woods. 2024 will bring a host of challenges from the election denial community that we must prepare for.”

The Hill reported:

Arizona officials certified the state’s vote canvass on Monday, officially declaring winners in the high-profile gubernatorial and Senate races, among other contests, as GOP figures vow to fight the election results in court.

The certification paves the way for automatic recounts to begin in three close races — attorney general, state superintendent and a state House seat near Phoenix — and officials signed certificates of election for the other contests.

Hobbs’s team will now go before a state judge, who is poised to officially order the three recounts.

But Monday’s meeting is also likely to spark multiple GOP-led lawsuits, as gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake (R), who lost to Hobbs, and attorney general candidate Abe Hamadeh (R), who trails his Democratic rival by the slimmest of margins ahead of the automatic recount, promise to take legal action.

Under state law, they have five days to formally contest the results in court.

Republicans are expected to fight the results in court after Election Day tabulators across Maricopa County were not working.

I wrote about it, published the details, then the engineer freaked out as he/she realized there was only a very limited number of people who could expose the issue. He/She was worried about his/her safety and family and asked me to remove the article. This background is how I know the details of who, what, when and why the California mass mailing ballot process was being constructed.

In the 2018 midterm elections we all watched the outcome of that process surface in the weeks following election day. As each day passed more and more California mail-in ballots were being counted and day-by-day Republicans who won on election day 2018 watched their lead evaporate.

What happened in the California 2018 midterm election surrounding state-wide ballot distribution, collection (harvesting) and eventual presentation to the counting and tabulation facilities, was the BETA test for the 2020 covid-inspired national ballot mailing process.

The outcome we are seeing from the 2022 midterm ballot collection program was not just similar to the 2020 general election ballot collection program, it is a direct outcome of the refined BETA test from 2018. Now we have multiple states following the California mass distribution of ballots approach. Washington state, California, Arizona, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, there’s a long list.

In many states mass mailing of ballots is now codified in election law. Activist election lawyer Marc Elias now coming in behind the construction team of Eric Holder with the legal arguments to support the ballot collection programs.

The Importance of Election Rolls – As you can see from the California initiation point (Motor/Voter), in order to most effectively use the mass distribution of ballots as an electioneering process you first need a massive state secretary voter file in order to generate, then mail, the physical ballots.

Remember, votes require people – ballots require systems.

Any institutional system that can link people into the SoS system to generate a larger registration file for ballot distribution is a net positive. The key point is not to generate voters, the key is to generate ballots – the more the better. Mass printing of ballots is the origin of the electioneering process.

Any state or federal system that links a physical identity to the secretary of state voter rolls is good. Any system, like the USPS postal change of address system, that would remove physical identities from the state voter rolls is not useful. The goal is to maximize the number of systems that generate registration, that eventually generates ballots.

Beyond the Driver’s License issue, it’s everything. Sign up for public assistance, get registered to vote. Sign up for state benefits, get registered to vote. Sign up for a state id, get registered to vote. Sign up for state college, get registered to vote. Sign up for a grant, get registered to vote. Sign up for unemployment, get registered to vote. Sign up for any state system and get registered to vote. Get married, change names, change addresses, etc, that’s how the voter rolls expand and that’s how the massive distribution of ballots is created.

The states then fight against anything, any effort, any process, that would purge voter rolls or fix incorrect voting rolls. To use the new electioneering system, the system operators need ballots created, they no longer need votes. They need ballots.

Downstream from this process that’s where you find the “ballot submission assistance” programs. This is where the local community networks, regional activist groups and widespread community organizers come into play. Instead of advertising or the previous electioneering systems around candidate promotion and Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts, the majority of donations to the DNC are now used in the ballot assistance programs. This was phase 1.

PHASE 2 – What Eric Holder is describing as his “victories so far”, is the codification of phase 1 together with controlling the geographic process for ballot collection.

Forget votes. Congressional districts (CD’s) need to be looked at as ballot gateways.

Zip codes are where the importance exists for phase 2.

On a congressional district level, the problem for ballot use is the lack of ballots in certain areas. Moving forward, ballots that DNC activists can gather and control need to come from geographic regions where they can impact congressional representation. CD’s now need to be looked at as district mail regions to modify so that zip codes can determine election outcomes.

With ballot collection and assembly as the new process, congressional districting maps are no longer important from a representation standpoint, now the priority needs to be zip code representation.

Mass distribution ballots need to go to addresses in zip codes in order for them to be harvested to change the congressional district representation.

Now that elections are based on ballots and not votes, zip code control is where the action is.

No arrests have been made nearly five months after a Special Forces soldier and veteran were found dead Dec. 2, at Fort Bragg, an official said last week.

A spokesman for the Army Criminal Investigation Command said the investigation continues into the deaths of Master Sgt. William LaVigne II, 37, and Army veteran Timothy Dumas, 44.

Death certificates for Dumas and LaVigne state each died from gunshot wounds and were shot by an “unknown assailant.”

In February, the FBI announced that it is assisting in the case.

“There have not been any arrest(s) and we are not releasing any additional details at this time,” Shelly Lynch, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Charlotte, said in an email this week.

Investigators have asked anyone with information on the case to contact the FBI or Army Criminal Investigation Command.

A news release from the FBI in February stated that the bodies of the men were found near a Fort Bragg training area. LaVigne’s gray 2016 Chevrolet Colorado pickup was found at the crime scene in the woods off Manchester Road.

Dumas’s dark-colored 2015 Dodge Ram pickup was discovered abandoned somewhere else, the news release stated.

Cause of death and court cases

The death certificate lists LaVigne’s cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds. Dumas’s cause of death is listed as gunshot wounds to the chest and head.→

The death certificates say the two men were found about 3:30 p.m. Dec. 2, in the woods on Fort Bragg. The certificates don’t indicate how long the bodies were in the woods.

It is not clear how the men knew each other.

LaVigne was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command and had been in the Army for 19 years.

His death certificate states his last place of residence was in Hope Mills.

Army records show Dumas served in the Army as a property accounting technician from November 1996 to March 2016, separating as a chief warrant officer 3.

He was a resident of Pinehurst at the time of his death.

LaVigne and Dumas were each scheduled to appear in court on unrelated cases in December and January, according to court records.

LaVigne was supposed to be in Cumberland County District Court on Jan. 15 for a Feb. 17, 2020, hit-and-run charge, court documents say.

Dumas was scheduled to appear in Forsyth County District Court on Dec. 17 for charges of breaking and entering, communicating threats and impersonating a law enforcement officer, according to court records.

Court documents state that Dumas broke into an apartment in Walkertown “with the intent to terrorize and injure an occupant of the building,” on April 11, 2020.

The record states Dumas yelled “police open the door” after knocking.

A spokeswoman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said the 911 call for the Walkertown incident came it at 12:54 a.m. April 11, 2020, as an anonymous assault in progress.

Spokeswoman Christina Howell said she could not elaborate on the specifics of what happened because stories of individuals at the scene appeared to differ “about why they were there and how they know each other,” but that it did not appear to be a random incident.

Howell was unable to say what threats Dumas directed toward the victim but that there was enough evidence to charge him with the crimes.

LaVigne also was involved in other Cumberland County cases that never resulted in charges, records show.

On March 21, 2018, at his Anhinga Drive home, LaVigne shot to death his friend, Army Sgt. 1st Class Mark Leshikar. The LaVigne and Leshikar familes had just returned from a trip to Disneyland. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office investigated and declared the death “justifiable homicide.”

Then, on Sept. 1, 2018, Lavigne was charged with felony harboring an escapee and maintaining a vehicle or dwelling to manufacture a controlled substance. The charges were dropped when authorities determined he was not involved in the criminal activity, Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West told The Fayetteville Observer at the time.

FBI Warned Twitter of Hunter Biden ‘Hack-and-Leak Operation’ Before 2020 Election

The FBI warned Twitter explicitly of a “hack-and-leak operation involving Hunter Biden” ahead of the 2020 presidential election, documents filed with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) show, providing fresh insight around the social media platform’s decision to censor the New York Post’s explosive expose about the contents of a laptop linked to President Joe Biden’s son.

Twitter’s former head of site integrity Yoel Roth made the remarks in a signed declaration (pdf) attached to a Dec. 21, 2020 letter to the FEC’s Office of Complaints Examination and Legal Administration on behalf of Twitter.

That letter came in response to a complaint by the Republican National Committee (RNC) that Twitter had made an “impermissible in-kind contribution” to Biden’s presidential campaign when it removed from its platform articles published by the New York Post about the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Roth said in the attached declaration that he was told by the FBI at a series of meetings ahead of the 2020 election that the agency warned of the threat of hacked materials being distributed on social media platforms.

“I was told in these meetings that the intelligence community expected that individuals associated with political campaigns would be subject to hacking attacks and that material obtained through those hacking attacks would likely be disseminated over social media platforms, including Twitter,” Roth stated in the declaration.

“I also learned in these meetings that there were rumors that a hack-and-leak operation would involve Hunter Biden,” Roth added.

Twitter ‘Has Interfered in Elections’

In the run-up to the 2020 election, the New York Post published a story about a laptop abandoned at a computer repair shop that purportedly belonged to Hunter Biden and contained emails suggesting that then-candidate Joe Biden had knowledge of, and was allegedly involved in, his son’s foreign business dealings.

President Joe Biden has repeatedly insisted he had no knowledge of or involvement in his son’s business operations.

Roth said in the declaration that, after reviewing the New York Post’s articles about the laptop, Twitter’s Site Integrity Team determined that they violated the platform’s policies against the distribution of hacked materials and took action on Oct. 14, 2020, to suppress distribution of the articles.

“Per the procedures and sanctions set out in the policies, the Site Integrity Team blocked Twitter users who had previously sent Tweets sharing those articles from sending new Tweets until they deleted the Tweets violating Twitter’s policies,” Roth said.

Roth later acknowledged that it was a mistake for Twitter to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story.

“We didn’t know what to believe, we didn’t know what was true, there was smoke—and ultimately for me, it didn’t reach a place where I was comfortable removing this content from Twitter,” Roth said during a recent interview at the Knight Foundation conference.

“But it set off every single one of my finely tuned APT28 ‘hack and leak campaign’ alarm bells,” Roth added, referring to a Russian cybercrime operation.

Roth was then asked if he thinks that Twitter blocking the Hunter Biden laptop story was a mistake, and he replied: “In my opinion, yes.”

In the interview, Roth was asked whether he thinks safety on Twitter had improved after Elon Musk’s takeover, to which he replied, “no.”

Musk responded to a news article fearing Roth’s remark by saying that Twitter had long failed in its trust and safety operations and interfered in elections.

“The obvious reality, as long-time users know, is that Twitter has failed in trust & safety for a very long time and has interfered in elections,” Musk said in a post on Twitter.

Tampa police chief resigns after trying to wiggle out of golf cart ticket

Tampa’s police chief resigned in disgrace weeks after she tried to use her influence to escape a ticket when her husband was pulled over in an unregistered golf cart.

Mary O’Connor, 51, submitted her resignation effective immediately on Monday after internal affairs found she violated departmental policies when she flashed her badge at a Pinellas County deputy on Nov. 12 and asked him to “just let us go.“

“I never want my personal mistake to stand in the way of the progress I have made in mending relationships between the police department and the community, so for that reason, I am resigning,” her resignation letter said in part, according to Fox 13 News.

The departure came three days after O’Connor was put on leave in connection with the incident after body cam footage of her trying to big-time the deputy in Oldsmar, Fla. was released.

The footage showed that O’Connor was riding in a golf cart without registration driven by her husband in the seaside community about 15 miles outside the city.

The golf cart traffic stop incident came ten months after O’Connor had been elevated to chief in Tampa.

Prior to her resignation, the former top cop had said she was remorseful about her behavior, which she claimed was a result of “poor judgment.”

“This was the first time we had exited the golf-cart friendly community in which we own property with this vehicle, prompting the need for a license plate.

“In hindsight, I realize how my handling of this matter could be viewed as inappropriate, but that was certainly not my intent,” O’Connor said in a Friday statement.

“I knew my conversation was on video, and my motive was not to put the deputy in an uncomfortable position,” she continued. “I have personally called the Pinellas County Sheriff offering to pay for any potential citation.”

Assistant Chief Lee Bercaw had been named acting chief amid the investigation.

O’Connor had been tapped last winter by Mayor Jane Castor, a former police chief, to fill the vacant top job, but her appointment was not without controversy.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged as a pandemic and has inflicted enormous damage on the lives of the people and economy of many countries worldwide. SARS-CoV-2 has a spike protein (S protein), and cleavage of the S protein is essential for viral entry. Nattokinase is produced by Bacillus subtilis var. natto and is beneficial to human health.

In this study, we examined the effect of nattokinase on the S protein of SARS-CoV-2.

When cell lysates transfected with S protein were incubated with nattokinase, the S protein was degraded in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Immunofluorescence analysis showed that S protein on the cell surface was degraded when nattokinase was added to the culture medium. Thus, our findings suggest that nattokinase exhibits potential for the inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 infection via S protein degradation.

Weeks Later, No Evidence Media Companies Have Returned A Dime Of Disgraced Crypto CEO’s Funds

In the weeks following the collapse of former crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried’s business empire, no evidence has emerged of national media companies returning the funds he provided them.

Bankman-Fried provided millions in grant funds and investments to national media outlets primarily through a philanthropic venture, the future of which remains uncertain, according to multiple reports.

His grants and investments to news outlets included the national publications ProPublica, Vox, The Intercept and Semafor before his crypto empire collapsed, Puck News reported on Nov. 11.

None of the outlets indicated they would return the grants from Bankman-Fried’s Building a Stronger Future foundation in responses to questions by the Daily Caller.

Kelly McBride, Chair of the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership at the nonpartisan Poynter Institute, believes returning “tainted” money should be a “no brainer” for media companies that received it in the form of a grant, she told the Daily Caller.

In the case of Bankman-Fried’s investment in news startup Semafor, she believes it will be more complicated, but they should “figure out a way” to send the funds back, McBride added.

Another media ethics expert, Dr. Nikki Usher, a senior fellow at the Center for Journalism & Liberty at the Open Markets Institute, told the Daily Caller “in this very specific instance where the money itself might be tied up with fraud,” a news organization “might consider” giving the funds back. There are “very few news organizations” that “would ever be in this situation,” Dr. Usher added.

Carol Rose Goforth, a legal expert in crypto assets, told the Daily Caller that Bankman-Fried could be compelled to sell his holdings in for-profit enterprises to pay off his debts. In limited circumstances, a bankruptcy trustee, a legal representative for creditors, can retrieve contributions to a company in a “claw-back” by. It is unclear if Bankman-Fried’s financial situation at the time of the contributions fits the legal criteria.

FTX owes its creditors over $3 billion, the company disclosed in a filing. It may have more than 1 million creditors, according to a Nov. 14, 2022 bankruptcy filing. At least $1 billion of customer funds are allegedly missing from FTX after the company moved the funds to partner trading firm Alameda Research, two sources told Reuters.

A California teacher who maintains a classroom library with books containing explicit sexual imagery and information on BDSM, orgies, and kinks recently claimed those books help students discover “who they are.”

San Juan Hills High School teacher Danielle Serio, who goes by the name “Flint,” had recently angered parents after it was revealed she was allegedly promoting her “queer library” to students in her classroom.

Among the books displayed in the library are titles such as Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera and Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Being Trans (But Were Afraid to Ask) by Brynn Tannehill. The books contained sexually graphic content that depicted “sex between women and BDSM, sexual fetishes, and ‘FetLife’ — a social networking site for kink,” Breitbart News reported in September.

Despite receiving backlash from parents, the teacher doubled down on the sexually explicit library in a video she shared on November 21, Fox News reported.

“People get really mad about my queer library. I have like 200 titles that are specific to the LGBT community that I’ve been curating for over eight years,” Flint said in a video, according to Fox News.

“Don’t get me wrong, my students love that library. It has been very helpful for many students figuring out who they are, how to relate to their peers,” she added.

This is not the first time Flint has responded to parent outrage regarding her TikTok videos and explicit library.

“I want people who follow me to know that I believe very much in what I’m doing, and I think my history as a teacher speaks for itself,” she once stated.

The Capistrano School District responded to the outrage in an email, claiming the books were not promoted in the classroom but were part of an extracurricular club. However, Flint revealed in her own commentary that the library was positioned to be openly available to students in the classroom, Fox News noted.

The San Juan teacher is not the only educator who has promoted perverted “sex education” material in classrooms.

In Philadelphia, the city’s school district invited teachers to a “Trans Wellness” conference in 2021 that discussed topics such as “BDSM,” “masturbation sleeves,” “kink,” “banging beyond binaries,” and “trans sex.”

Chinese Operatives Ran A Massive TikTok Campaign To Help Dems In The Midterm Elections: REPORT

TikTok accounts operating as voices of Chinese state media promoted messages that appeared to denigrate Republican candidates and favor Democratic ones ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, according to a Forbes investigation.

While the Chinese-owned social media app has verbally affirmed the need to crack down on election disinformation and foreign interference, several news-oriented accounts failed to disclose their affiliation with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) state-owned media on the platform, Forbes found. The accounts racked up tens of millions views on posts that covered divisive topics, such as abortion and race, as well as critical clips that mostly targeted Republican candidates ahead of the 2022 midterms.

“This opens a new dimension for conversation about TikTok,” Conor Healy, director of government research at surveillance research group IPVM, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The accounts are managed by MediaLinks TV, which registered as a foreign agent for China with the Treasury Department in 2019 and distributes the U.S. branch of China Central Television (CCTV), CGTN, according to the company’s LinkedIn page. MediaLinks also operates the CCTV and CGTN apps, according to Apple.

The largest accounts are @Panadorama, @The…Optimist and @NewsTokss, the latter of which expressly covers U.S. national news, according to Forbes.

NewsTokss in particular ran content that overall shone Republican politicians in an unfavorable light and praised Democrats, Forbes found.

A video from July was introduced with the caption “Cruz, Abbott Don’t Care About Us,” referring to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and the state’s governor, Greg Abbott, according to Forbes. Another from October criticized Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida for having “Done Absolutely Nothing.”

Some content swayed against Democrats; one NewsTokss video in October asked viewers whether President Joe Biden’s promise to enshrine abortion rights served as a “political manipulation tactic,” Forbes found.

None of the videos clearly disclosed their ties to CGTN or the Chinese government, but the accounts’ profile bios did spell out, “Material distributed by MediaLinks TV LLC on behalf of CCTV. More info at DOJ, D.C.,” Forbes reported.

“That’s not disclosure,” Healy said. Between May 8 and July 6, NewsTokss received 8.3 million views but only 57,600 profile views, suggesting many users who watched the videos may not have realized a foreign government was pushing the content, Forbes reported.

Further, by redirecting users to the Department of Justice (DOJ), MediaLinks shrouded its status as a foreign agent.

Biden Admin Says They Drained Strategic Petroleum Reserve To Save ‘Global Economy’

The Biden Administration’s International Energy Affairs advisor Amos Hochstein said Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that the administration drained the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in part to help save the “global economy.”

Host Joe Kernen noted the Biden Administration consistently accused oil companies of price gouging, but since gas prices have dropped the administration has moved away from that talking point.

“So if oil companies and refiners were able to control the prices and gouge and profiteering at the higher levels, why does the Biden administration get credit when market forces take over and they do come down?” Kernen asked, adding whether “they just say this stuff to their base?”

“We released from the SPR, I had conversations as did others, my colleagues, with CEOs and other senior executives in the oil industry in the United States,” Hochstein said. “We were told it will take us time to increase production, it would take us six months, seven months to increase production and bring that to market. They thought that would be by the end of the year.”

“We took the action with the SPR in order to save not just the U.S. economy but the global economy from the reactions that Putin was trying to do, he was literally using energy as a weapon against the West and we mitigated that and gave time to the private sector to invest more and to invest in America to increase production,” Hochstein continued.

President Joe Biden authorized the sale of up to 180 million barrels of oil from the reserves in March after Russia invaded Ukraine, while consistently blaming spiking gas prices on Russian President Vladimir Putin. The administration also blamed oil companies for high energy prices.

The administration again released 10 million barrels from the reserves in October, bringing the reserves to their lowest levels since the 1980’s.

The move was called political by some, however. Daniel Turner, executive director of Power the Future, told the Daily Caller News Foundation Biden was “fleecing taxpayers to save the midterms.”

“We filled the SPR at $60 a barrel … and now we’re looking to replenish at $90, meaning there is still a $30 per barrel delta, and we have sold millions and millions of barrels.”

“If the [Trump administration] had sold this scheme, the media would have crucified him as being in the pocket of ‘big oil.'”

Former President Donald Trump suggested filling up the SPR in March of 2020 to stabilize the oil industry after it took a massive hit during the onset of the pandemic. Oil was $24 per barrel and Republicans suggested spending $3 billion to fill the reserve.

“It puts us in a position that’s very strong and we’re buying it at the right price,” former President Donald Trump said at the time.

Pfizer boss refuses to testify to EU Parliament COVID panel — again

‘We have no further information to share,’ says Albert Bourla, who bailed out of an earlier appointment in October.

Pfizer Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla has once again declined to testify before the European Parliament’s special COVID committee.

That’s strike two.

"Since the October COVID hearing, we have no further information to share with the Committee, so respectfully decline the invitation to again revisit these issues," states the letter from Bourla dated December 2 and seen by POLITICO.

Bourla previously pulled out of an appointment to testify before the committee in October, at which he was expected to face tough questions on how secretive vaccine deals were struck. That decision followed an audit report into the EU's vaccine procurement strategy that raised new questions about contact between the pharma CEO and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that preceded a multibillion-euro vaccine contract.

On October 14, the European Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed it had an ongoing investigation into the EU's COVID vaccine purchases, but has not yet specified who is being investigated or which of the EU's vaccine contracts are under scrutiny.

At the October 10 COVI hearing, the company’s president of international developed markets, Janine Small, faced repeated questions from the committee on Bourla's absence, one of which was even taped to some MEPs' laptops. She also took questions on vaccine contract negotiations and the jabs themselves, including one from Dutch MEP Robert Roos (ECR group) about whether the vaccine was tested for its ability to prevent transmission before entering the market. That question — and Small's answer — landed Roos an appearance on Tucker Carlson's Fox News talk show.

But, in the end, it seems Small was just no substitute for Bourla.

So, on October 28, the COVID committee extended a second invitation to the CEO.

“Our committee felt that during the previous hearing with representatives of the pharmaceutical industry, where Pfizer was represented by Mrs. Janine Small, important questions regarding the advanced purchase agreements between the European Union and Pfizer, which fall under the responsibility of the CEO and of which only he has the authority to respond to them, remained unanswered,” COVID committee chair Kathleen Van Brempt (S&D group) said in a statement today.

“As chair of the COVI committee, I deeply regret Dr. Bourla’s refusal to discuss this matter with the Members of the European Parliament,” she said. "As a co-legislator of the European budget, the Parliament has the right to obtain full transparency on the modalities of these expenditures and the preliminary negotiations leading up to them."

But for Pfizer, it seems there’s just nothing new to say.

“Pfizer has provided input to the Special Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic, and the wider European Parliament, as it seeks to understand and learn from the pandemic response,” a company spokesperson told POLITICO.

Raytheon Gets $1.2 Billion Contract to Produce Air Defense System for Ukraine

The contract is for six National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems

The US Army has awarded Raytheon a $1.2 billion contract to produce an air defense system for Ukraine as part of US military aid for the country.

The contract is for six National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), a system the US recently began providing Ukraine. The funds for the contract are coming from the fifth package from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which allows the US to purchase arms for Kyiv.

NASAMS typically take 24 months to produce, but the US Army said it will work to expedite the timeline. Either way, the systems will likely take at least about two years to deliver, demonstrating how the US is planning to support Ukraine against Russia in the long term.

Raytheon, the former employer of Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, has benefited greatly from the US’s Ukraine policy. The company, and other US defense contractors, are getting contracts to make weapons for Ukraine, to replenish US military stockpiles, and for US allies in Europe.

Raytheon CEO Greg Hayes said last week that the US is looking to send NASMS deployed in the Middle East to Ukraine. “There are NASAMS deployed across the Middle East, and some of our NATO allies and we [the US] are actually working with a couple of Middle Eastern countries that currently employ NASAMS and trying to direct those back up to Ukraine,” Hayes said, according to POLITICO.

If NASMS in the Middle East are sent to Ukraine, Hayes said those systems would then be backfilled with new ones, meaning more contracts for Raytheon. Hayes said that sending already deployed NASMS gets the system into Ukraine’s hands much faster than producing new systems. “Just because it takes 24 months to build, it doesn’t mean it’s going to take 24 months to get in country,” he said.

History: US Business Operations with Nazi Germany

Among the Nazis’ first actions after taking power was to dismantle the German trade unions and labour power. By March 1933 the first concentration camp was erected at Dachau, soon to be followed by others, where numerous communists, socialists and other undesirables were interned. The German masses were thereafter transformed largely into devoted followers of Hitler, subjected regularly to Nazi propaganda; much of the techniques of which Gauleiter of Berlin Joseph Goebbels had learnt in the 1920s from Edward Bernays, the influential American propaganda merchant.

The Third Reich’s destruction of the left, along with Hitler’s stated intention to preserve big business, was welcomed by corporate managers. Before Hitler had even come to power, his views had drawn approval abroad from leading industrialists; like the American tycoon Irénée du Pont, a proponent of racial superiority and until 1925 the president of chemical multinational DuPont; and Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, a fervent anti-Semite who in the early 1920s wrote ‘The International Jew: The World’s Problem’.

A number of business moguls in America were overtly anti-Semitic, and Hitler’s rants against the supposed Jewish problem met with their approval. Ford’s writings in fact seem to have influenced Hitler and other Nazis like Baldur von Schirach, future head of the Hitler Youth. At the Nuremberg trials in May 1946, von Schirach said he had read Ford’s above work “and became anti-Semitic. In those days this book made such a deep impression on my friends and myself, because we saw in Henry Ford the representative of success”.

Ford himself was providing funds to the Nazi Party since the 1920s, when it was a miniscule political organisation (1). Hitler kept a life-size portrait of Ford behind his desk in Munich, and in 1931 the Nazi leader told a Detroit news reporter, “I regard Henry Ford as my inspiration”. Each year Ford also sent money to Hitler personally on his birthday through Swiss or Swedish banks, between around 10,000 to 20,000 Reichsmarks annually. These payments to Hitler continued until 1944, more than two years after the German declaration of war on America. (2)

However, as Hitler became chancellor on 30 January 1933, the Nazi Party’s coffers were virtually empty and large bills remained unpaid. Just a few weeks before, Goebbels complained in his diary that “financial troubles make all organised work impossible” and “the danger now exists of the whole party going to pieces” (3). This indicates that, up until Hitler took control, the Nazis received rather limited funding from big business. Greater contributions would be forthcoming, almost as soon as Hitler gained the chancellorship.

Nazi Germany largely depended on oil shipments from US Standard Oil.

Prescott Bush was a partner of Brown Brothers Harriman & Co and director of Union Banking Corporation which had close relations with German corporate interests including Thyssen Steel, a major company involved in the Third Reich’s weapons industry.

Without US support to Nazi Germany, the Third Reich would not have been able to wage war on the Soviet Union. Germany’s oil production was insufficient to wage a major military campaign. Throughout the war, the Third Reich relied on regular shipments of crude oil from US Standard Oil owned by the Rockefeller family.

The main producing countries in the early 1940s were: the United States (50% of global oil production), the Soviet Union, Venezuela, Iran, Indonesia, and Romania.

Without a steady supply of oil, Germany would not have been able to conduct Operation Barbarossa which was launched on June 22, 1941. The invasion of the Soviet Union was intent upon reaching and taking control of the oil resources of the Soviet Union in the Caucasus and Caspian sea regions: the oil of Baku.

The Unspoken Question. Where did Germany get its oil from?

Prior the December 1941, Texas oil was shipped on a regular basis to Nazi Germany.

While Germany was able to transform coal into fuel, this synthetic production was insufficient. Moreover, Romania’s Ploesti oil resources (under Nazi control until 1944) were minimal. Nazi Germany largely depended on oil shipments from US Standard Oil.

The Attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) occurred barely six months after the launching of Operation Barbarossa (July 1941). The United States enters World War II, declaring war on Japan and the axis countries.

Trading with the Enemy legislation (1917) officially implemented following America’s entry into World War II did not prevent Standard Oil of New Jersey from selling oil to Nazi Germany. This despite the Senate 1942 investigation of US Standard Oil.

While direct US oil shipments were curtailed, Standard Oil would sell US oil through third countries. US oil was shipped to occupied France through Switzerland, and from France it was shipped to Germany:

“… for the duration of the Second World War, Standard Oil, under deals Teagle had overseen, continued to supply Nazi Germany with oil. The shipments went through Spain, Vichy France’s colonies in the West Indies, and Switzerland.”

It should be noted that a large share of Nazi Germany’s oil requirements was met by shipments out of Venezuela which at the time was a de facto US colony.
