Client insider & "expert" take

 

GBTC fees are 2%/year

Fees are charged to shareholders at 1% every semester. I'm not sure of the actual date but it's likely at the end of each semester.

This means that the next date is coming up.

Grayscale manages GBTC, and Grayscale, like Genesis, is a company under the DCG holding company of Barry Silbert. The price of the underlying Bitcoin in GBTC is actually almost 200% of the current price of the shares in the trust. This negative premium would evaporate if the SEC would approve the trust to ETF conversion, but the SEC chair (((Gary Gensler))), who is also caught up and under investigation in the FTX scandal denied the conversion. Hence, Grayscale suing the fuck out of the SEC for the last 6 months or so.

In any case, Genesis is solvent, but illiquid because of the FTX scandal. Actually it's actually only the isolated lending branch that has any issue. They're other desks are working fine. They are adamant about not filing bankruptcy and as of yesterday, claim that they'll need a couple more weeks to come up with a solution working with hired experts and 3-4 teams of the largest creditors.

 

Originally, they wanted to raise $1B, but then they lowered the ask to $500M. Assuming 1% of the about $20B AUM in GBTC (based on share price, not underlying asset price), by the end of the year, they should have ~$200M from fees that DCG might be able to loan or somehow shift over to Genesis lending.

Our national security relies on the careful and deliberate creation, dissemination, and protection of classified information. But some contend that the current system for classifying and declassifying US government records is outdated and imposes significant economic and public policy costs, directly and indirectly harming national security. Storage and maintenance costs increase as classification levels rise, and these costs will increase with newly classified electronic records growing exponentially, and with numerous records approaching mandatory declassification review. In addition, the problems with decreased efficiency, coordination, and trust and confidence in our national security agencies undermine our nation’s security and public confidence in the intelligence community.

 

For more than a decade, the Public Interest Declassification Board (PIDB) has called for reform of our classification system. More recently, leaders across the political spectrum, throughout the intelligence community, and in civil society and academia have also called for change. The National Security Council’s ongoing review and planned update of Executive Order 13526, which governs the declassification process, provide an opportunity for a thoughtful discussion on the challenges, approaches, and priorities for reforming the classification system.

 

The event consist of an initial 30-minute fireside chat with PIDB Chair and Hudson Adjunct Fellow Ezra Cohen and Vice Chair Alissa Starzak, who set the stage with a discussion of current challenges, potential approaches, and priorities for reforming the existing classification system. The FTC's Effort to Block Microsoft's Activision Acquisition Will Test Biden's Antitrust Legacy

 

It’s official. After months of rumors, the Federal Trade Commission this week voted 3-1 in favor of suing to block Microsoft’s estimated $69 billion acquisition of video game giant Activision Blizzard.

 

The forthcoming legal battle represents the most significant antitrust challenge from the Biden-era FTC to date that has, up until now, had few tangible victories to back up its progressive, anti-monopolist rhetoric. The challenge’s success or failures could play a large factor in determining whether or the Biden administration can live up to its image as an aggressive antitrust maverick.

 

In a press release Thursday, the FTC argued the acquisition, if allowed to occur, would let Microsoft suppress competitors to its own Xbox gaming console and its growing cloud gaming business. Microsoft, according to the FTC, had already demonstrated a pattern of acquiring big name game studios like Bethesda only to make their titles exclusive to Microsoft’s platform.

 

β€œMicrosoft has already shown that it can and will withhold content from its gaming rivals,” FTC Bureau Director of Competition Holly Vedova said in a statement. β€œToday we seek to stop Microsoft from gaining control over a leading independent game studio and using it to harm competition in multiple dynamic and fast-growing gaming markets.”

 

The FTC vote comes just days after Microsoft announced it intended to bring Activision’s massively popular Call of Duty franchise to Steam and Nintendo consoles. Sony, Microsoft’s primary competitor in the console gaming sector, shot down an offer to keep the franchise on Playstation for 10 years. Sony has opposed the acquisition outright and claimed the deal would have, β€œmajor negative implications for gamers and the future of the gaming industry.”

 

Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith commented publicly on the FTC’s decision and expressed confidence in the acquisition which he believes would, β€œexpand competition and create more opportunities for gamers and game developers.”

 

β€œWe have been committed since Day One to addressing competition concerns, including by offering earlier this week proposed concessions to the FTC,” Smith said on Twitter. β€œWhile we believe in giving peace a chance, we have complete confidence in our case and welcome the opportunity to present it in court.”

 

The FTC’s vote to block the Activision acquisition was praised by consumer advocacy groups, some of which had spent months urging regulators to take a more proactive approach towards large acquisition attempts.

 

β€œMicrosoft’s attempt to acquire Activision is unlawful, and it’s not particularly close,” American Economic Liberties Project Executive Director Sarah Miller said in a statement sent to Gizmodo. β€œThe FTC made the right call. Microsoft’s flurry of last-minute promises to not abuse the market power that they’d gain from this deal reinforce its underlying illegality.”

 

The agency’s decision also received praise from Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, who’s previously introduced antitrust legislation targeting growing consolidation across multiple industries.

A confession by former German chancellor Angela Merkel about the Minsk peace agreements could be used as evidence in a tribunal involving Western politicians responsible for provoking the Ukraine conflict between Moscow and Kiev, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned on Thursday.

 

The deal, brokered by Germany and France, was supposed to be a roadmap for peace in the war-torn country. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that his country's current military offensive was prompted by the failure to implement the terms of the accords.

 

The former German leader admitted in an interview with Die Zeit on Wednesday that the actual purpose of the Minsk agreements was to give Ukraine time to prepare for a military confrontation with Russia.

 

β€œThey talk a lot about legal assessments of what is happening around Ukraine, certain tribunals and so on in all sorts of ways,” Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a media briefing on Thursday. β€œBut this is a specific reason for a tribunal.”

 

She claimed that Merkel’s comments were nothing short of the testimony of a person who had openly admitted that everything done between 2014 and 2015 was meant to β€œdistract the international community from real issues, play for time, pump up the Kiev regime with weapons, and escalate the issue into a large-scale conflict,” Zakharova added.

 

She said Merkel’s statements β€œhorrifyingly” reveal that the West uses β€œforgery as a method of action,” and resorts to β€œmachinations, manipulation and all kinds of distortions of truth, law and rights imaginable.”

 

The spokeswoman claimed that the West had known well in 2015, when it spent hours negotiating the second part of the Minsk accords, that it would never even attempt to fulfill any part of the agreements and would instead pump weapons into Kiev.

 

β€œThey did not feel sorry for anyone: women, children, the civilian population of Donbass or the whole of Ukraine. They needed a conflict and they were ready for it back then, in 2015,” Zakharova said.

 

Earlier this month, a number of Western officials called for the creation of a special UN-backed court to investigate alleged war crimes committed by Russia during its ongoing military campaign in Ukraine.

 

The Kremlin has said the West has no legal or moral right to set up any courts to investigate or prosecute Russia over the conflict, which Moscow claims was ultimately provoked by the US and its allies.

NASA Taps Collins Aerospace to Develop New Space Station Spacesuits

 

NASA has awarded a task order to Collins Aerospace to deliver a spacewalking system for potential use outside the International Space Station.

 

This award – the second under NASA’s Exploration EVA Services contract – is for design and development of a next-generation spacesuit and support systems. The task order has a base value of $97.2 million.

 

Collins Aerospace will complete a critical design review and demonstrate use of the suit on Earth in a simulated space environment by January 2024. NASA will have the option to extend the contract for a demonstration with agency crew members outside the space station by April 2026.

 

With this second award for a new suit and system, NASA is another step closer to a replacement for the current design used by NASA astronauts for decades during space shuttle and space station missions. The new suit will support continued station maintenance and operations as NASA and its international partners continue to perform scientific research that benefit humanity and is crucial to future Artemis missions to the Moon in preparation for Mars.

 

β€œWe look forward to obtaining another much-needed service under our contract,” said Lara Kearney, manager of the Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, which manages the spacesuit contract. β€œBy working with industry, NASA is able to continue its over 22-year legacy of maintaining a presence in low-Earth orbit.”

 

Under the indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract, both Collins Aerospace, as well as Axiom, which was awarded an initial task order award for Artemis suits, provided proposals to meet both station and Artemis requirements. Both vendors will continue to compete for future task orders which include recurring services for station spacewalks and moonwalks beyond Artemis III.

 

Collins will be responsible for the design, development, qualification, certification, and production of its station spacesuits and support equipment to meet NASA’s key requirements. The agency will continue to maintain the authority to manage astronaut training, spacewalk planning, and approval of the service systems.

NASA loses contact with ICON atmosphere-studying satellite in Earth orbit

 

NASA recently lost contact with an atmosphere-studying satellite working beyond its design lifetime.

 

NASA's Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) fell out of contact on Nov. 25, and the mission team has not been able to hail the spacecraft in the weeks since, agency officials wrote in a brief statement(opens in new tab) on Wednesday (Dec. 7).

 

"The team is currently still working to establish a connection," NASA officials wrote. "Working with the Department of Defense's Space Surveillance Network, the team has verified that ICON remains intact."

 

ICON's hardware includes a "command loss timer" designed to reset the spacecraft if it doesn't talk to ground controllers for eight days. But the spacecraft remains silent after the reset completed on Monday (Dec. 5), NASA added in the blog post.

 

ICON, which launched in October 2019, is exploring facets of Earth's ionosphere that other spacecraft have not looked for before. The ionosphere β€” a layer of Earth's atmosphere that stretches from roughly 50 miles to 400 miles (80 to 640 kilometers) above our planet β€” changes constantly with solar radiation. Such variations can affect communications technologies.

 

The mission passed its two-year prime mission in December 2021 and is working under an extended mission.

 

Troubleshooting continues, as the mission team explores the probable source of the issue to "problems within the avionics or radio-frequency communications subsystems," NASA officials added.

 

It is unclear right now whether the spacecraft will call home again, the blog post noted. "The team is currently unable to determine the health of the spacecraft, and the lack of a downlink signal could be indicative of a system failure."

Female protesters in Iran shot in faces, breasts and genitals, medics say

Medics treating protesters in Iran said they were seeing a difference in the type of injuries inflicted on men and women by the security forces β€” with the female activists often being shot in their faces, breasts and genitals.

In interviews with the Guardian, multiple doctors and nurses who have been surreptitiously caring for wounded demonstrators during months of unrest said it appeared that officers tasked with stopping the protests have been targeting specific body parts in women.

One doctor from Isfahan province speaking to the outlet on condition of anonymity said he believed the authorities β€œwanted to destroy the beauty of these women.”

Iran has been roiled by violent protests since Sept. 16, when a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman named Mahsa Amini died while in the custody of the morality police after being detained for allegedly wearing her hijab β€œimproperly.”

So far, more than 475 people have been killed in the unrest and over 18,000 have been detained by government forces as part of a brutal crackdown on the popular movement, which was spearheaded by women and girls fed up with the ayatollahs’ draconian rule.

Iranian authorities reportedly have been firing on demonstrators at close β€” sometimes point-blank β€” range with birdshot pellets made of metal or plastic. Doctors said shots to the eyes were particularly common.

The doctor from Isfahan told the newspaper about his experience treating a young woman who was struck in her crotch area with a dozen pellets, two of which had lodged inside her genitals.

 

β€œTwo pellets were a challenge, because they were wedged in between her urethra and vaginal opening,” he said, adding that the state of the patient left him anguished because she β€œcould have been my daughter.”

 

Another doctor from the city of Karaj suggested that the security forces β€œshoot at the faces and private body parts of women because they have an inferiority complex and they want to get rid of their sexual complexes by hurting these young people.”

There also have been hundreds of reports of protesters being blinded by pellets shot into their eyes.

Ghazal Ranjkesh, a student from the city of Bandar Abbas, wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post that she was shot in her right eye on her way home from work.

β€œThe last image that my right eye saw was the smile of the person shooting at me,” she wrote.

The government in Tehran has stepped up its efforts to stamp out the unrest, which has come to pose one of the most serious challenges to Iran’s theocracy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

On Thursday, Iran carried out the first execution stemming from the protests by hanging Mohsen Shekari and was seeking the death penalty against 21 others.

To be stiff-necked is to be obstinate and difficult to lead. The Bible often uses this figure of speech when describing the attitude of Israel toward God (e.g., Exodus 33:3; Deuteronomy 9:13; Nehemiah 9:16; Acts 7:51). When God’s chosen people refused to love Him, honor Him, and obey Him, they were not living the purpose for which God chose them as His own (see Isaiah 41:8–9; Jeremiah 7:23–24; Exodus 19:5–6). God made His will clear to the Israelites, and their disobedience was rightly referred to as being stiff-necked and hard-hearted. As Israel rebelled against God, they ignored the β€œgoads” that God used to try to redirect them.

 

Stephen, the first Christian martyr, used the term stiff-necked when he told the Jews they had murdered their Messiah. He said, β€œYou stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? Twenty years ago, when I was a Moscow correspondent for the Baltimore Sun, two Americans named Matt Taibbi and Mark Ames ran an English-language tabloid in the Russian capital called the eXile. They portrayed themselves as swashbuckling parodists, unbound by the conventions of mainstream journalism, exposing Westerners who were cynically profiting from the chaos of post-Soviet Russia.

A better description is this: The eXile was juvenile, stunt-obsessed and pornographic, titillating for high school boys. It is back in the news because Taibbi just wrote a new book, and interviewers are asking him why he and Ames acted so boorishly back then. The eXile’s distinguishing feature, more than anything else, was its blinding sexism β€” which often targeted me.

At the time, the paper had its defenders, even those who acknowledged its misogyny and praised it anyway. A Rolling Stone article by Brian Preston in 1998 described the eXile's "misogynist rants, dumb pranks, insulting club listings and photos of blood-soaked corpses, all redeemed by political reporting that's read seriously not only in Moscow but also in Washington." A 2010 Vanity Fair reminiscence by James Verini wrote: "They call Ames and Taibbi, singly or in combination, children, louts, misogynists, madmen, pigs, hypocrites, anarchists, fascists, racists, and fiends." But "what made The Exile so popular, and still makes it so readable, was its high-low mix of acute coverage and character assassination, sermonizing laced with smut β€” a balance that has also characterized Taibbi's work at Rolling Stone, where he has been a contributing editor for the last five years." Taibbi still writes for Rolling Stone; Ames, too, works in journalism, running a podcast on war and conflict.

Accepting his invitation, I replied. "Let a thousand flowers bloom, let Matt Taibbi print whatever he wants," I began. "But why reprint it? . . . In a recent eXile, the editor [Ames] wrote about how he dealt with his pregnant girlfriend when she refused to get an abortion. She wouldn't listen to reason, so he threatened to kill her. That worked! Then he muses on forever about another pregnant acquaintance who aborted and about his relief that this child β€” who would have been a 'sloped-head idiot' β€” was instead a dead fetus properly wallowing in the sewers."

The Chicago Reader , in a review of the 2000 Taibbi-Ames memoir, "The eXile: Sex, Drugs, and Libel in the New Russia," described what happened next. "They decided to give [Lally] the treatment. They had a female friend call her and, posing as an anti-Exile sympathizer, ask her to help shut the paper down by giving a statement" to a reactionary Russian intelligence agency.

The eXile published what it said was a transcript, which didn’t sound at all like me. The paper quoted me agreeing to organize a boycott of the eXile’s sponsors and saying I would consider being a witness in a criminal investigation of Taibbi and Ames. I don’t remember my words of 20 years ago β€” I made an effort to forget the eXile and its editors β€” but I never had any intention of organizing a boycott. And all I ever said about the eXile publicly was in that email to Johnson. But after that, Ames and Taibbi seemed certain I wanted to shut the paper down, censor them and oppose free speech generally. They ridiculed me in the eXile and, later, in their memoir.

When I wrote an article about advertisements that used sex to sell cigarettes β€” new for Russia β€” Taibbi addressed my Baltimore Sun editors in his eXile column: "Lally's article is pathological, illogical, inaccurate, makes no point, and is insulting and hypocritical besides. . . . Lally's gaffes may be comic, the wild meanderings of an aging woman nearing derangement." Once, the eXile declared me the winner of its "Gnarliest Elephantine Ass on a Journalist With No Ethics Award." Another time, it published a cartoon showing me in bed with my editor.

I wondered if I should write a story about the eXile, and I started asking Western correspondents what they knew about it. Taibbi had accused a friend of mine of being paid by Russian oligarchs to write favorable stories, so I thought it was worth asking about the eXile's connections. Do you think any oligarchs are financing them? As a reader, can you tell the difference between what they are making up and what they are not? Are they here on journalist visas? Who are their journalistic role models? I never pursued it, but Taibbi found out about my queries. In the eXile, he described "a full frontal attack by, of all things, a matronly middle-aged American print journalist."

When β€œThe eXile: Sex, Drugs and Libel in the New Russia” came out, the memoir had a few more surprises in store. β€œWe dragged . . . Lally’s charred [corpse] through the dust-and-fly-infested streets of our newspaper for all to have a laugh,” Ames wrote. In the most unexpected anecdote, Taibbi said that another reporter, Fred Weir, described in great detail how the eXile had made me cry. β€œGood!” Taibbi describes himself shouting. I was aware of Weir; probably we had bumped into each other at news conferences. But I didn’t know him. I couldn’t imagine why I would ever have wept in front of him.

I didn't think about Taibbi and Ames for years; my self-esteem remained intact and my life moved along. Then, just as more and more men were being drummed out of public life for long-ago behavior, Taibbi landed in the news, bringing Ames along with him. Taibbi recently published a book about the death of Eric Garner, "I Can't Breathe," and in an interview about it, an NPR host asked him about the eXile years and a passage, written by Ames, in their memoir that described routine sexual harassment of women.

Taibbi apologized on the program and later on Facebook. "The behavior [Ames] describes is reprehensible. It is also, like a lot of things in the eXile, fictional and not true." He said he regretted putting his name on a book "that used cruel and misogynistic language to describe many people and women in particular." In a second Facebook apology, he wrote: "The eXile did have a satirical idea, at least in the beginning. It was supposed to be an obscene send-up of the Americans who stood behind the crooked Yeltsin government." Ames recently told reporters that the eXile was obviously satire and complained that he is being smeared for that satire.

But so many of their sins were real. Taibbi once wrote in the eXile that women had no business wearing "painter's pants and sneakers" when they ought to be more like Russian women, with "their tight skirts, blowjob-ready lips, and swinging, meaty chests." Ames described going to the senior prom of an international high school with a 17-year-old date he called his "Jew-broad"; he was 34. Back home she would be "jailbait," he wrote in the eXile , but Russia "permits sex with a fourteen-year-old, so long as you had reason to believe she was sixteen, the legal statutory age." Before I became a favorite target, Taibbi and Ames took regular aim at Carol Williams, the Los Angeles Times Moscow bureau chief in the late 1990s. After she wrote about terrible Moscow roads in 1997, they proclaimed her the β€œultimate press villain.” They said she was β€œtranslator dependent,” even though, she told me, she was the β€œonly one in the four-person bureau to travel without a translator. They were trying to provoke me. They were making up stuff and accusing me of complicity with bad actors in the Russian government. It was completely false. They were pigs.”

Then I got in touch with Taibbi and Ames, neither of whom has ever met or spoken to me. Ames did not reply to requests for comment. He has, however, described his stories of sex with 15-year-olds as satire. In a Facebook exchange with me, Taibbi gave some ground. β€œI certainly would not go about things now the way I did back then,” he wrote. β€œAnd I apologize for the physical descriptions. That was gratuitous and uncalled for.” But before he stopped answering my questions, he took some jabs, complaining about the β€œefforts to get us removed from the Johnson’s list.”
