Feds investigating multiple reports of recent utility company sabotage

The most recent potential case of sabotage occurred in South Carolina.

Federal authorities are investigating a number of recent reported acts of sabotage on utility companies, a senior law enforcement source told ABC News.

The move comes in the wake of substations being riddled with bullets in North Carolina, leaving tens of thousands without power for days.

After the incident, the utility companies reached out to federal authorities in recent days to investigate, the source said.

The most recent potential case of sabotage occurred in South Carolina.

According to multiple law enforcement sources, an individual opened fire near a Duke Energy facility at the Wateree Hydro Station in Ridgeway.

The individual used what appeared to be a long gun and then sped away. No one was injured and there has been no reported damage to the station at this time. There is also no indication the attacks are coordinated at the moment.

A $75,000 reward has been offered in the North Carolina case, in Moore County, where two electrical substations were shot at.

"This was a malicious attack on an entire community, and it plunged tens of thousands of people into darkness. They knew what to do to disable this substation … But we know that people are very frustrated here, and that's very understandable," said the state's governor, Roy Cooper.

No arrests have been made and no motive has been announced in that case.

China begins implementing relaxed anti-COVID-19 measures.

BEIJING (AP) — China began implementing a more relaxed version of its strict “zero COVID” policy on Thursday amid steps to restore normal life, but also trepidation over a possible broader outbreak once controls are eased.

 

The country reported 21,165 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, though it was unclear whether the lower number reflected fewer infections or a reduction in testing.

 

The National Health Commission issued relaxed anti-pandemic regulations on Wednesday, including a loosening of lockdowns and the elimination of a requirement that a recent negative COVID-19 test be shown to enter most public places.

 

The commission said it was due to “positive results” in fighting the virus and because of a recognition that the current omicron variant is less dangerous than earlier versions of the virus — a fact long embraced by other countries that have reopened their societies.

 

“Our country’s epidemic prevention and control work is facing new situations and new tasks,” commission spokesperson Mi Feng said. Neither Mi nor other experts appearing with him at a briefing Thursday addressed the possibility of a new outbreak once restrictions are eased.

 

The relaxation also follows street protests — the largest in decades — by people fed up with the draconian controls, which have been blamed for hobbling the economy, upending millions of lives and causing the deaths of some people refused hospital treatment because they lacked proper test results.

Brittney Griner, the WNBA star who was held for months in Russian prisons on drug charges, was released Thursday in a one-for-one prisoner swap for international arms dealer Viktor Bout, according to a U.S. official. The one-for-one exchange agreement negotiated with Moscow in recent weeks was given final approval by President Biden within just the last week, according to sources familiar with the deal. The swap, first reported by CBS News, took place on Thursday in the United Arab Emirates.

 

Five former U.S. officials told CBS News the agreement had been reached as of last Thursday.

Scientists Taught Living Brain Cells To Play Pong, And It Worked

 

The study is said to be the first that establishes the capability of assembled in-vitro neurons to respond to external stimuli in an adaptive manner.

 

A team of science wizards has managed to teach a bunch of isolated brain cells how to play pong, and surprisingly, these cells learned the craft quicker than an AI chip alone. Scientists have long been fascinated with the brain’s extraordinary capabilities, and have even tried to simulate some of its characteristics to speed up the pace of computing in the modern era. Major stakeholders such as Intel and IBM have been tinkering with concepts such as neuromorphic chips for a while now.

 

All the way back in 2006, a team of European researchers created what they called a “neuro-chip” which had brain cells glued with special proteins on a silicon chip that had thousands of transistors. A lot of new breakthroughs have been achieved since then, with even some big names like Samsung jumping on the bandwagon. Earlier this year, Samsung detailed a new method for creating a neuromorphic chip that involves copying the brain’s map on a 3D-stacked memory chip.

Now, a company named Cortical Labs claimed in a research paper that it trained a sample of in-vitro brain cells to learn the game of pong faster than an AI. The research on isolated brain cells and their activity has been a topic of fascination for scientists. Experts at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences in California recently reported growing miniature brains in a lab that evolved into neural networks, just like the human brain. Critical Labs has gone a step ahead by training these brain cells in simple tasks like understanding the game of pong, a first-of-its-kind achievement in the area of mini-brain research. The system is called DishBrain that has brain cells growing on a microelectrode array to stimulate the neural network. In a somewhat similar experiment, another team recently managed to create self-replicating robots made from embryonic cells of a frog species.

 

Another Leap At Unraveling The Brain

The team at Cortical Labs trained the brain cells using the single-player version of pong. The process involved electrically stimulating the left or the right electrode array to indicate where the pong ball is. Once the signal was fed, the neurons in these isolated brain cells will move the paddle according to the ball’s location. But the key takeaway is that in-vitro brain cells can self-organize and display intelligent behavior when handled in a simulated game-world. Scientists are far from aping the human brain’s design to make an unhinged super-intelligent AI, but these small steps are promising.

Samsung says it wants to take the next leap into neuromorphic computing by recording a mammalian brain map and pasting it on a next-gen memory chip.

 

With the goal of creating a next-generation artificial intelligence, Samsung is working on neuromorphic engineering that seeks to copy the fundamental neuron connectivity of a mammalian brain on a system of memory networks. Samsung is not the only major player in the field, as companies like Intel and IBM are also working on similar projects and have even demonstrated neuromorphic systems in the past decade. The core idea behind neuromorphic engineering is to somehow mimic the activity of neurons — nerve cells that are building blocks of the human brain — and employ it on computing chips, taking their performance and energy efficiency to the next level.

 

One area that neuromorphic engineering aims to revolutionize is Artificial Intelligence. From smartphones to high-power computing machines, the current-gen AI models have to be trained on huge data sets so that they can learn to respond to certain queries and adapt to user preferences over time. But a neural system offers more flexibility, as it can generate answers even where there are a lot of restrictions. There are a ton of challenges, too, such as the development of a whole new type of memory, storage, and sensors. Moreover, conventional data encoding and processing concepts will have to be reworked, and the need for writing a new programming language will likely be a hurdle as well.

Samsung, in collaboration with experts from Harvard University, has now detailed a new approach for creating a neuromorphic chip in a research paper titled ‘Neuromorphic Electronics Based on Copying and Pasting the Brain’ that has been published in Nature. As the name suggests, Samsung aims to copy the neuron connectivity map of a mammalian brain (or a section of it) and paste it on a high-density 3D network of solid-state memory. The goal is to copy brain attributes such as low power requirement, cognition and autonomy capabilities, and adaptability, and employ the learnings to create a neuromorphic chip for advanced computing scenarios.

 

The Road To Reverse Engineering The Brain Begins With A Chip

The first step towards achieving the aforementioned goal is copying the brain’s natural neuronal network (NNN) and mimicking its innate processing capabilities. Samsung aims to accomplish that using a silicon neuro-electronic interface called the CMOS nanoelectrode array (CNEA). The CNEA is said to be capable of copying the NNN’s functional synaptic connectivity map. The team behind the project aims to extract the connectivity map from the network-wide intracellular recording data obtained from live and functioning neurons cultured in laboratory conditions. Once the data has been copied, the next phase is pasting it on a network of conductive memories, a system where each memory unit is said to represent the strength of a corresponding biological synaptic connection.

 

As for the memory chip selection, Samsung is exploring everything from DRAM and flash memory to next-gen solutions such as Spin-Transfer Torque (STT) Magnetic Random Access Memory (MRAM), Phase-Change Magnetic Random Access Memory (PRAM), and Resistive Magnetic Random Access Memory (RRAM). Even though many of them are far from commercial adoption, each one brings its own set of advantages and leaves the doors open for a better implementation. And to solve the space constraint for a memory system with millions of sub-units, Samsung aims to use 3D stacking to reduce the surface area. The research says the copy-pasting technique represents some essential aspects of the brain’s computing and might act as the first step towards brain reverse engineering, despite the existing challenges.

Integrating neurons into digital systems to leverage their innate intelligence may enable performance infeasible with silicon alone, along with providing insight into the cellular origin of intelligence. This so-called “Satanic panic” comes courtesy of QAnon, the group best known for claiming Donald Trump is fighting a secret world order for humanity’s freedom. Some members believe McCartney's supposed death and the “butcher” album cover (which featured the Beatles surrounded by cuts of animal meat and beheaded baby dolls) proves the band was a psy-ops campaign created and funded by the British government, according to a Rolling Stone investigation.

 

Noting that QAnon has “floated the idea that JFK Jr. is still alive and suggested that President Biden is actually a robot,” Rolling Stone argued that members “come to these conclusions in much the same way as a ‘60s stoner would have ‘proved’ that Paul was dead: by interpreting images and texts in a way that no reasonable person ever would.”

 

Examples cited included one member claiming that the Beatles were “financed by the british govt to help create a counter culture w/ rock music & drugs to study it via the tavistock institute,” referring to the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, which explores social science as a solution to modern problems. The member added: “60's counter culture was mostly manufactered.”

 

The “butcher” image – withdrawn as sleeve art for the 1966 U.S. compilation album Yesterday and Today – was said by one member to prove that “Elite mfs want to normalize pedophilia & child sacrifices,” and the picture represented “the highest level of evil.”

 

Another member said McCartney's rumored death was only “an entry conspiracy theory. Once you realize how much you’ve been lied to about the Beatles, even if only in small ways where you still think Paul is Paul, it primes you for accepting that much of your culture has been a psy-op and false.” Another asked: “If Paul McCartney is really dead, and ‘They’ deceived people back in the late ‘60s, can you imagine what ‘They’ can do now???”

We know about Black Lives Matter. My new video is about a group called Black Guns Matter.

 

Maj Toure, a Philadelphia high school dropout turned activist, tells me he started it after he got tired of hearing people endless chanting, "Black lives matter" but saying nothing "when it's time for Black people to defend their lives."

Toure carries a gun wherever he goes. "This is my human right," he says. "If anybody wants to come chase me down about that, let's go to court."

He encourages others to arm themselves, especially people who live in high crime neighborhoods.

I point out that means he wants more guns in places where there are already more shootings.

That's the point, says Toure. "The only thing that's going to stop evil are good, solid people strong enough to stop them."

He sells a T-shirt with the slogan "make criminals afraid again" printed on the front.

"Criminals should be deathly afraid," says Toure. "If you're robbing people and carjacking, I want you to know that we're gonna arm our community to deal with you very, very properly."

More guns in the hands of citizens, he says, deters criminals.

There is evidence for that. Economist John Lott, author of "More Guns, Less Crime," points out that crime usually drops in states that approve concealed carry laws. The explanation is that criminals in those states fear that their victims could be armed.

I push back at Toure, pointing out that more guns also may lead to more accidental shootings."

"That's under the assumption that those gun owners aren't getting training," replies Toure.

Training is what Toure does. In 2016, he held his first Black Guns Matter event. He expected 30 people, but 300 showed up. "It was beautiful," he says.

His group now teaches classes all around America.

"We're teaching absolute beginners that want to know how to be safe and responsible firearms owners."

If you are threatened, he says, you need a gun and need to know how to use it.

In my video, he tells his students, "No one's coming to save me! I have to save and protect myself and my family."

Last year, about 90% of gun stores reported an increase in sales to Black people.

"I made it so," says Toure. "Gun control is racist." Gun control was "started to literally stop Black people from having the means to defend themselves."

That is true. Before the Civil War, Tennessee changed its constitution to say that only "free white men" have a right to bear arms. Virginia banned Blacks from carrying "any firelock of any kind."

Later, when some local governments wouldn't protect Blacks from racist whites, Blacks often took up arms to protect themselves. Where Blacks had access to firearms, there were fewer lynchings.

This card from 1889 by the New York roasting company Arbuckle’s Coffee is part of a series of fifty cards which show unique qualities of various countries in the world. This collection of cards from the Russian Empire does not only show the Winter Palace of the Tsar in Saint Petersburg (The Hermitage) but also the cultivation of hemp and flax.

Since the eighteenth century, Russia was the largest hemp producer in the world. Around 1740, the country produced at least eighty percent of the hemp that was used in Europe for sails, rope, nets etc. High quality hemp was the number one export article of the country, it was more important than fur, wood or iron. In the second half of the eighteenth century, Great Britain imported ninety percent of its hemp from Russia. British shipping was almost completely dependent on Russian hemp. This was enough reason for Napoleon to start a hemp war

The hemp war

Napoleon and Tsar Alexander I signed the Peace Treaty of Tilsit in 1807. One of the conditions was that Russia would no longer trade with Great Britain; Napoleon’s arch enemy. The French Emperor hoped that a shortage of Russian hemp would weaken the British fleet (and economy). In 1811, Russia resumed trade with Great Britain. Napoleon protested but did not get a reaction from the Tsar. Consequently, Napoleon put an army of 680.000 men together and on 24 June 1812 began his march on Moscow to, among other things, gain his control over the Russian hemp production. The campaign was a complete disaster and meant the beginning of the end for Napoleon.

After the Russian Revolution

The country was still the world’s greatest producer of hemp after the Russian Revolution of 1917. The most important production areas were situated in the current Ukraine and White Russia. In 1931, a special institution was established in Glukhov (Ukraine) for the development of new hemp crops. In the nineteen seventies they successfully developed a better fibre quality, a higher yield per hectare and a lower THC-level.

2.5 million hectares of wild hemp

After the fall of the Soviet Union, the hemp cultivation decreased significantly. One of the last Russian hemp factories is in Bolkhov. Once, there were sixteen. However, according to a rough estimation, there are circa 2.5 million hectares of wild hemp growing in the far east of Russia and around the Black Sea.

Military man turned businessman

 

Viktor Bout was born in Dushanbe, the capital of the Tajik Soviet Republic (now Tajikistan) to Russian parents. He graduated from the Military Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow and joined the elite 339th regiment of the Soviet Union air force as a translator. His regiment was based out of Vitebsk, Belarus and operated in Angola as part of a UN contingent until 1991. When the regiment was disbanded after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Bout moved to South Africa.

 

Having reached the rank of First Lieutenant in the Air Force, Bout left his military career behind him and began to put his skills to use in business. His mastery of languages, knowledge of Africa and experience with aircraft gave him a good grounding for a career in the aviation industry.

 

He started an air transport business, which quickly ballooned into a global airline network. It was the perfect timing for such a venture: in the early 1990s former Soviet Union aircraft could be bought quite cheaply as demand plummeted. It is thought that he began his empire with the purchase of a single An-12 ('Antonov') turboprop transport aircraft.

Just before he is pushed into the room he yells out "I am just a patsy!" [@00:38 seconds] in response to the question "Did you kill the President?" LHO could have protected himself, albeit creating a national and World firestorm in the process, by telling the press that he was an agent working for the federal government. Instead, LHO did his duty to the very end as that was his last chance to speak publicly before HE was assassinated on Sunday, November 24, 1963.

 

Guy Banister and the rest of Poppy's crew did a great job in leaving enough circumstantial evidence behind for the comp'd Warren Commission to conclude that LHO was the lone gunman who assassinated JFK.

Jewish Defense League threatened famously murdered rapper, provided bodyguards for hip-hop stars, according to released FBI documents.

The FBI released files this week on the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996, revealing that the Jewish Defense League (JDL) was suspected of “extorting money from various rap-music stars via death threats, including Shakur and another performer, Eazy-E.

“The scheme involves [name redacted] and other subjects making telephonic death threats to the rap star,” the files state. “Subjects then intercede by contacting the victim and offering protection for a fee. The victim and their family are taken to a ‘safe haven,’ usually a private estate, and are protected by gun-toting body guards associated with the Jewish Defense League.”

After the victims were brought to the “safe havens,” the JDL would allegedly “convince the victim they have worked a ‘deal’ out… and the threats cease. The victim then pays the subjects for the protection services rendered.”

A camera on board the uncrewed Orion spacecraft captured this view on December 5 as Orion approached its return powered flyby of the Moon. Below one of Orion's extended solar arrays lies dark, smooth, terrain along the western edge of the Oceanus Procellarum. Prominent on the lunar nearside Oceanus Procellarum, the Ocean of Storms, is the largest of the Moon's lava-flooded maria. The lunar terminator, shadow line between lunar night and day, runs along the left of the frame. The 41 kilometer diameter crater Marius is top center, with ray crater Kepler peeking in at the edge, just right of the solar array wing. Kepler's bright rays extend to the north and west, reaching the dark-floored Marius. Of course the Orion spacecraft is now headed toward a December 11 splashdown in planet Earth's water-flooded Pacific Ocean.

Peru: Police arrest president after Congress votes to remove him from power

 

Police in Peru have arrested the country's president, Pedro Castillo, after Congress voted to remove him from power.

 

In a tweet that has since been deleted, the National Police of Peru said officers had "intervened".

 

A photograph showed a man in a blue jacket sitting on a sofa - apparently Mr Castillo - but his eyes had been blacked out.

 

The tweet described him as "former president Pedro Castillo".

 

Congress voted to remove Mr Castillo and replace him with Vice President Dina Boluarte after he tried to dissolve the legislature, the AP news agency reported.

Would any anons know how to get squatters removed from a property?

I have called the building Inspectors and the cops several times over the past few months. The squatters have since installed their own door knobs/locks. Cops just left there after banging on the door and they simply did not answer.

RIDGEWAY, S.C. (WCSC/AP) - Duke Energy confirmed reports of gunfire at one of its South Carolina energy facilities in a statement Wednesday night.

 

The utility released a statement late Wednesday on the report of gunfire Wednesday near the Wateree Hydro Station in Ridgeway.:

 

We are aware of reports of gunfire near the Wateree Hydro Station in Ridgeway, S.C. No individuals were harmed. There are no outages reported. There is no known property damage at this time. We are working closely with the FBI on this issue.

 

The report comes as Duke Energy confirmed it had completed repairs on substation equipment damaged in shootings over the weekend in Moore County, North Carolina. Almost all households in Moore County had regained power as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to Duke Energy’s outage map. A peak of more than 45,000 customers lost power over the weekend.

 

Authorities have said the outages began shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday night after one or more people drove up to two substations, breached the gates and opened fire on them.

 

In a statement on its website, Duke Energy said all of the equipment damaged in the attack has been fixed or replaced. The company said customers gradually got power back throughout the day as it finished testing and restoration.

 

Police have not released a motive or said what kind of gun was used in the attack. But Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields told reporters Monday that whoever was responsible “knew exactly what they were doing to … cause the outage that they did.”

 

The FBI posted a notice Wednesday seeking information related to the investigation.

 

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced that the state, county and Duke Energy were offering combined rewards of up to $75,000 total for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the attack.

 

“An attack on our critical infrastructure will not be tolerated,” Cooper said in a statement Wednesday.

 

The vandals damaged transformers and caused them to leak coolant oil, the cooperative said in a news release. It was not immediately clear how the damage was done or if there is a link to the Moore County outages. The Jones County sheriff did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Wednesday.
