Abstract

 

The majority of cardiovascular diseases are characterized by disorders of the arteries, predominantly caused by endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffening. Intermittent hot water immersion (โ€˜heat therapyโ€™) results in elevations in core temperature and changes in cardiovascular haemodynamics, such as cardiac output and vascular shear stress, that are similar to exercise, and thus may provide an alternative means of improving health which could be utilized by patients with low exercise tolerance and/or capabilities. We sought to comprehensively assess the effects of 8 weeks of heat therapy on biomarkers of vascular function in young, sedentary subjects. Twenty young, sedentary subjects were assigned to participate in 8 weeks (4โ€“5 times per week) of heat therapy (n = 10; immersion in a 40.5ยฐC bath sufficient to maintain rectal temperature โ‰ฅ 38.5ยฐC for 60 min per session) or thermoneutral water immersion (n = 10; sham). Eight weeks of heat therapy increased flowโ€mediated dilatation from 5.6 ยฑ 0.3 to 10.9 ยฑ 1.0% (P < 0.01) and superficial femoral dynamic arterial compliance from 0.06 ยฑ 0.01 to 0.09 ยฑ0.01 mm2 mmHgโˆ’1 (P = 0.03), and reduced (i.e. improved) aortic pulse wave velocity from 7.1 ยฑ 0.3 to 6.1 ยฑ 0.3 m sโˆ’1 (P = 0.03), carotid intima media thickness from 0.43 ยฑ 0.01 to 0.37 ยฑ 0.01 mm (P < 0.001), and mean arterial blood pressure from 83 ยฑ 1 to 78 ยฑ 2 mmHg (P = 0.02). No changes were observed in the sham group or for carotid arterial compliance, superficial femoral intima media thickness or endotheliumโ€independent dilatation. Heat therapy improved endotheliumโ€dependent dilatation, arterial stiffness, intima media thickness and blood pressure, indicating improved cardiovascular health. These data suggest heat therapy may provide a simple and effective tool for improving cardiovascular health in various populations.

2-year-old Nevada boy dies from brain-eating amoeba after visit to hot spring

 

A 2-year-old boy from Nevada, died this week from a Naegleria fowleri infection, also known as a brain-eating amoeba, state health officials and his mother said.

 

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Naegleria fowleri to be the cause of the childโ€™s illness, the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health said in a news release Thursday.

 

The boy, from Lincoln County, just north of the Las Vegas area, may have been exposed at Ash Springs, a natural hot spring in the county, it said.

 

State health officials didn't publicly identify the child or immediately respond to a request for his name.

 

His mother, Briana Bundy, said her 2-year-old son, Woodrow Turner Bundy, died Wednesday after fighting the infection.

 

Woodrow fought for 7 days, his mother wrote on the Facebook page Rainbows for Raynie.

Suspected arsonist caught starting wildfire in Italy by police drone

 

Authorities in Italy have released drone footage said to show a suspected arsonist in action in the Calabria region, as firefighters continue to battle wildfires across the south.

 

Searing temperatures have scorched Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria, where dozens of fires have broken out and multiple evacuations have been ordered.

 

The president of the Calabria region, Roberto Occhiuto, vowed to take action against such arsonists, adding that 22 suspected arsonists had been caught via drone surveillance last year.

 

In the footage he released, the suspect can be seen in a woodland area, before throwing rocks at the drone.

The Next Frontier for Warfighters Might Be Implants in Their Brains. Is the Pentagon Ready for the Consequences?

 

A year later, in 2019, a report from the Army's Combat Capabilities Development Command predicted that brain enhancement technology, particularly in the form of implants, could be common by 2030.

 

"As this technology matures, it is anticipated that specialized operators will be using neural implants for enhanced operation of assets by the year 2030," the report details. "These operators will include teams from the Special Forces, military pilots, operators of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) such as drones, and intelligence personnel."

 

That means that in less than a decade, if the technology experts are right, the Pentagon could be using brain implants for troops, special operators and pilots to be connected to technology.

 

But while the technology is advancing, neuroethicists, futurists and medical researchers are asking whether the military is ready for the responsibilities entailed with messing around in people's heads. These experts have told Military.com in more than a dozen interviews that the brain is so incredibly complicated and the technology is so new that we don't fully understand the implications.

 

"The brain is, arguably and ironically, the most complex, least understood technology that there is, and that is the fundamental problem and opportunity that we're wrestling with here," Peter Singer, a scholar on 21st century military technology and an author who focuses on the future of warfare, told Military.com in an interview.

 

If DARPA's technology ever becomes a device that is implanted in the brain of a warfighter, what responsibility would the government have for maintaining that technology? Will the Department of Veterans Affairs be servicing degrading brain implants for decades after young Americans take off the uniform? Will mental health or cognitive disorders emerge decades from now, and will those who suffer them receive care?

 

"I would say the government has a huge responsibility," Dr. Paul Appelbaum, one of the country's leading scholars in legal and ethical issues in the medical field, told Military.com. "They have introduced into this person's head whether they've done it invasively or noninvasively a technology that was designed to change their brain function. And by intervening in that way, I think they have created a responsibility to follow these people down the road and try to ensure that adverse consequences don't result from their participation."

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) โ€” Governor Kristi Noem is putting South Dakota in the fast lane when it comes to filling jobs.

 

Thursday she announced her โ€œFreedom Works Hereโ€ advertising campaign is partnering with Live Fast Motorsports to sponsor a NASCAR race car.

 

Noem is revving up South Dakotaโ€™s economic engine through NASCAR.

 

Her โ€˜Freedom Works Hereโ€™ campaign will be one of the sponsors wrapped on BJ McLeodโ€™s Chevy Camaro when he races this Sunday during the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series at Richmond, Virginia.

 

โ€œWe looked at sponsoring NASCAR races before and partnering with teams in the past, because a lot of that demographic is who we are talking to,โ€ Noem said.

 

Itโ€™s the latest effort in a $5 million dollar advertising campaign to reach people from other states and convince them to move here to work.

 

โ€œFor the last two years what I heard every single day from people in our state is we canโ€™t get workers,โ€ Noem said.

 

Noem says more than 3,500 people from every state have applied to move to South Dakota.

 

675 of those are in the final stages of moving here.

 

โ€œStaff from across the state are helping folks from across the country explore the opportunities that are available right here in South Dakota,โ€ South Dakota Labor Secretary Marcia Hultman said.

 

The Labor Secretary says the campaign is working.

 

โ€œIโ€™ve been involved with the Department of Labor for 26 years and Iโ€™ve been a part of a lot of marketing and recruitment efforts and the numbers weโ€™ve seen are surpassing anything weโ€™ve ever seen before,โ€ Hultman said.

 

Governor Noem says during the pandemic, other states shutdown, but South Dakota remained open and thatโ€™s when the state began running the โ€˜Freedom Works Hereโ€™ ads.

 

โ€œIt was such a dark time in our country and people said to me over and over again, when I saw those South Dakota ads come on tv it was so refreshing and different I just wanted to come I wanted to bring my kids and I wanted to come visit and many of those people who came to visit in 2020, they went home and packed up their families and moved here, yup, thatโ€™s you? Here in England, many millions of people use either a passenger/car ferry, or the channel tunnel train link to take their cars to and from Europe. Many millions of heavy goods vehicles also use them to cross the English and Irish channels while transporting freight.

Anon likes George Webb but finds his style of reporting confusing. Seems to me like he expects you to have watched every video he ever made and I guess you would need to in order for all of it to make sense. Because he constantly links so many things to past reports without explaining fully the context of what he is reporting on now. So I'm always left with the feeling that all I got was a guided tour of whatever new location he is showing you but never a full understanding of what he is really driving at. More than a little frustrating and must certainly hurt the credibility of what he reports.

The fairness of allowing men, who โ€˜identifyโ€™ as women, to compete in womenโ€™s sports is a slippery slope. It is obviously not fair to allow a man, pretending to be a woman, to enter a boxing ring to fight against a woman.

 

It is based on a moral stance that prioritises the inclusion of โ€˜transโ€™ individuals over the integrity of womenโ€™s sports.

 

And it ultimately harms women.

 

In fact, it harms everything.
