Rebuffed by Vatican, Pompeo Assails China and Aligns With Pope’s Critics

Pope Francis declined to see Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is demanding a harder Vatican line on China. The Holy See said meeting just before a U.S. election would be inappropriate.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

Preserve officials don't know exactly how much of the Joshua tree forest has been burned by the latest fire. Hughson said they believe it has caused a similar level of devastation as that of the Dome Fire, which scorched the preserve in 2020 and burned an estimated 1.3 million Joshua trees—or about one-quarter of the region's contiguous Joshua tree forest.

 

It's hard to know what exactly will grow back, but previous fires offer a look at what may be in store for the latest area of the preserve charred by wildfire.

 

The once dense Joshua tree forest burned by the Dome Fire has started to transition to a grassier landscape. And while a small number of the Joshua trees in that area did manage to resprout from unburned roots, Hughson said, "it's not a juniper tree forest, nor will it ever be again."

Avoiding the tortoise habitat

 

If there is one bright spot, it's that the fire has mostly managed to avoid the critical habitat of the threatened desert tortoise located inside the preserve.

 

"We're thinking and hoping that most of the desert tortoise habitat was unscathed and that most of the desert tortoise are OK," Hughson said.

 

The desert tortoise population has been in decline for decades, and the species has been listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act dating back to 1990.

 

Most of the effects to the tortoise population from the fire are likely to come from motor vehicles and large equipment responding to the fire, Hughson said. That's why preserve officials implemented a 25 mph speed limit for all vehicles operating near those habitat areas.

 

There also have been several biologists out in the field moving tortoises off the road and guiding vehicles in an effort to minimize the chances of tortoises being killed, Hughson said.

Last week, Biden’s corrupt and weaponized DOJ just issued Trump’s third and most serious criminal indictment. The formal charges of “conspiracy to defraud the United States” do an underwhelmingly half-hearted job of disguising the obvious purpose of the indictment, which is to codify the “disinformation” scam into criminal law generally, and specifically, to criminalize what we might call “election denial”.

 

Indeed, there’s a reason the indictment begins with the false, absurd and legally irrelevant claim that Trump made “knowingly false claims” about the 2020 election that “created an intense national atmosphere of mistrust and anger” and eroded “public faith in the administration of the election.”

 

Despite having lost, the defendant was determined to remain in power. So for more than two months following election day on November 3, 2020, the Defendant spread lies that there had been outcome-determinative fraud in the election and that he had actually won. These claims were false, and the defendant knew that they were false. But the defendant repeated and widely disseminated them anyway—to make his knowingly false claims appear legitimate, create an intense national atmosphere of mistrust and anger, and erode public faith in the administration of the election”

 

Nevermind for a moment that questioning the legitimacy of an election is First Amendment-protected speech. Let’s focus for now on the ridiculous insistence that Trump “knowingly lied” in his statements concerning the election. To say that Trump “knowingly lied” is to not only dispute his objective (and in our view entirely justified) questions concerning the election, it is to state that subjectively, privately in his own mind, Trump actually thought the election was legitimate — that he legitimately lost, but he lied anyway.

 

How on earth would Biden’s corrupt DOJ presume to know that? The answer is they don’t. To prove that Trump “knowingly lied” the DOJ resorts to one of the darkest and most ridiculous slight-0f-hand tricks imaginable: assuming that Trump must have known better because supposed “experts” told him the election wasn’t stolen. Yes, you read that right. The basis of the DOJ’s allegation that Trump actually believed he lost the election despite his public statements is the fact that other individuals, in many cases individuals in the intelligence community, told him so. If that isn’t absurd enough, take a look at the experts whom the DOJ deems so unimpeachably authoritative that for them simply to tell Trump “oh no the election was fair and square, nothing to see here” is enough to assume Trump believed them:

According to the DOJ, Trump knew his election claims were false because he had been advised otherwise by “people in the best position to know the facts,” and those people include Mike Pence, senior DOJ officials, the Director of National Intelligence, DHS’ CISA, and others. In other words, Trump must have believed his claims of election fraud were false because he was told otherwise by people he should have trusted, like the very same establishment snakes and intelligence community operatives who demonstrably worked to sabotage his Presidency since day one. That’s one hell of a theory!

 

The DOJ’s decision to invoke CISA as an authority is especially outrageous given that this agency was recently exposed for engaging in and then attempting to cover up rampant unconstitutional censorship leading up to the 2020 election.

Now we are in a better position to appreciate the utter Orwellian absurdity of the DOJ’s position. According to them, Trump must have been lying in his claims about election fraud, because other unimpeachably authoritative sources told him the election was all above board, and one of these sources is an organization recently exposed for violating the Constitution in aggressively pushing for censorship leading up to the 2020 election, and then exposed additionally for maladroitly covering it up. The desert itself is spiritual: in the words of Italian spiritual writer Carlo Caretto, “The desert does not mean the absence of men, it means the presence of God.” And though Joshua trees are often described as “grotesque” or “the most repulsive tree in the vegetable kingdom,” they are also often referred to as comforting. There is a strange, unexplainable pull to the area.

 

Perhaps that is why so many spiritual retreats occur in the park, such as the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, also known as the Institute of Mental Physics. It is the oldest and largest retreat center in the Western United States.

 

… The JTRC is a non-profit organization. The Institute operates on the teachings of Ding Le Mei, or Edwin J. Dingle…, a journalist who explored Asia in a quest for spiritual knowledge, ultimately combining eastern and western philosophies to form the Mentalphysics Spiritual Teaching and Retreat center in 1941.

 

Interestingly, though, Mei, or Dingle, was a world-renowned geographer. In fact, his “New Map of China” became China’s standard map.

The park is also home to many indigenous tribes, such as the Serrano, Chemehuevi, Mojave Cahuilla, and the Mojave. Who better to look to for a historical perspective on the land and the feeling one gets from the land? For thousands of years, these groups embraced the tree as a spiritual resource. The Cahuilla referred to the land as “magical,”and the Chemehuevi had a rich culture of sharing spiritual stories. These stories often involve incorporating aspects of the local people, animals, and land around them. These aspects make up what we now know as Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree. …

Government orders federal employees to leave early amid D.C. storm warnings

 

The Level 4 risk from the NWS for severe storms marks the first such warning in roughly a decade.

 

The federal Office of Personnel Management (OPM) on Monday ordered federal employees to leave work by 3:00 p.m. amid major storm warnings for Washington, D.C.

 

"Employees of Federal agencies in the Washington, DC area are authorized for Early Departure," the press release stated. "Employees should depart 2 hours earlier than their normal departure time and may request Unscheduled Leave to depart prior to their staggered departure time. All employees Must Depart no later than 3:00 at which time Federal offices are Closed."

 

The National Weather Service has announced that much of the Atlantic coast will face dangerous storms, including the capital city.

 

"Dangerous storms with widespread very strong winds, large hail and a few tornadoes are likely this afternoon and evening across parts of the Mid-Atlantic. Be sure to follow your local NWS Forecast Office for the latest forecasts and warnings," the NWS tweeted.

Best Meteor Shower of the Year Peaks This Weekend

The NASA All Sky Fireball Network is already detecting the first meteors of this year’s Perseid meteor shower! The meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12 as the Earth passes through the dustiest debris of comet Swift-Tuttle’s trails.

 

The Perseid meteor shower is often considered to be the best meteor shower of the year due to its high rates and pleasant late-summer temperatures. Unlike last year’s shower coinciding with the full moon, this year’s moon will be a waning crescent, allowing even some of the fainter meteors to be seen.

 

So, how many can you see?

 

“People in the U.S. can reasonably expect to see around 40 Perseids in the hour just before dawn on the peak nights. That’s about one every couple of minutes, which is not bad,” said Bill Cooke, who leads NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office. “However, we are assuming you are out in the country, well away from cities and suburbs.”

 

The brighter skies of suburban areas greatly reduce the rates, with 10 or fewer expected in an hour.

 

You can see the Perseid meteor shower best in the Northern Hemisphere. All you need to catch the show is a clear sky, darkness, and a bit of patience. You don’t need to look in any particular direction; meteors can generally be seen all over the sky.

 

The Perseids appear to radiate from a point in the constellation Perseus, and each meteor has a similar orbit. Meteor showers take their name from the location of their point of origin, or what is known as the radiant.

 

Fun fact:

The Perseid meteor shower is the only meteor shower to delay a Space Shuttle launch. In 1993, the NASA – STS-51 launch was delayed due to concerns about the Perseid meteor shower activity being forecast to be extremely heavy, increasing the chance that a spacecraft in Earth orbit could be damaged by a piece of the debris.

The woman who caused a big scene on the American Airlines flight, shouting that ‘motherf**ker back there is not real’, has been ID’d as a marketing executive from Texas.

 

Tiffany Gomas told the police that her outburst happened because of a disagreement about airpods, The Post verified. After her strange behavior, the airline had to remove her from the plane, causing delays for everyone else onboard.

In the viral video, she shouted, “There’s a reason why I’m getting the f—k off”” but she was still hesitant to go. The 38-year-old woman had to be removed by the staff, according to the police documents.

 

The video was first posted by @knuckelslawncare on TikTok, who was both a witness and a fellow passenger. In the video, the woman is visibly upset and talking incoherently as she moves along the airplane aisle.

 

Certain Twitter users also shared jokes related to the movie “Final Destination” and other memes.

 

Gomas also told the passengers: “You can sit on this plane and you can f—ing die with them or not. I’m not going to.”

 

The disagreement began when Gomas got into a fight with her family members who were also traveling with her. She accused them of taking her AirPods, as reported by the police.

 

When Insider contacted American Airlines, they shared that the incident occurred during a flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Orlando. The flight had to go back to the gate because of a disruptive passenger. The airline mentioned that they had to involve local law enforcement in the situation.

 

Official complaint mentions Gomas didn’t comply with police

The documents showed that TSA staff came over to the area and checked the plane thoroughly once again.

 

When the officers got to the gate, Gomas was very upset and wanted to re-board the plane, The Post reported. The police officers from the Dallas-Fort Worth Department of Public Safety attempted to talk to Gomas, but she declined to speak with them.

 

“[The airline manager] gave Gomes a verbal criminal trespass notice, explaining she was denied boarding and needed to depart the secure area,” investigators noted.

 

The complaint mentioned that Gomas didn’t show her identification to the police. She was never officially arrested or held in custody.

India's Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander has returned its first images from the moon after entering orbit around our nearest neighbor.

 

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) released the images on Sunday (Aug. 6), showing that the spacecraft had reached its destination ahead of a lunar landing attempt expected on Aug. 23.

 

Chandrayaan-3 launched on July 14, heading into an initial highly elliptical Earth orbit. It then gradually raised its orbit before making a burn on July 31 that set it on course for the moon. The spacecraft successfully entered orbit around our natural satellite on Saturday (Aug. 5), according to ISRO.

 

The spacecraft will conduct further engine burns to bring it into a circular track about 60 miles (100 kilometers) above the surface of the moon a week ahead of the expected landing attempt.

 

The newly released images, which ISRO stitched into a 45-second video, show the solar arrays of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft in the foreground. The moon, with features including large impact craters and lunar mare, or seas, is in the background.

The 6-billion-rupee (roughly $73 million) Chandrayaan-3 mission aims to make a precise landing in the vicinity of the moon's south pole. If it's successful, India will join the United States, the former Soviet Union and China as the only nations to perform a soft lunar landing.

 

The mission's lander, known as Vikram, also carries a small rover called Pragyan. The pair will spend the best part of a lunar day (about 14 Earth days) conducting surface operations and experiments before succumbing to the deep cold of the lunar nighttime.
