Larkin's death comes just days before a new trial is set to begin in the U.S. Department of Justice's long-running case against Backpage and its executives. The first trial, which began in September 2021, ended in a mistrial. A retrial, which is expected to last nearly three months, is scheduled to start on Aug. 8.

On Wednesday, Larkin attorney Timothy Eckstein notified the court of Larkin's death. The filing also said attorneys in the case will discuss dismissing the indictment against Larkin during a status hearing on Friday with U.S. District Court Judge Diane Humetewa. The hearing was scheduled before Larkin's death.

Humetewa, in an order filed Wednesday, warned attorneys to be prepared for the trial to start next week. She also said attorneys will need to ask potential jurors if they are aware of Larkin's death and, if so, whether that would impact their ability to be impartial.

 

"The Court, having become aware of Defendant Larkin’s passing, will nonetheless expect the parties to prepare for trial to commence on the current scheduled date," Humetewa wrote.

 

Zach Stoebe, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office, said questions about the future of the case are likely to be addressed on Friday.

Citing “record breaking heat levels,” U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Democratic Sens. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland asking him to sue the fossil fuel industry. They claim the industry has “carefully coordinated” a “campaign to mislead consumers and discredit climate science in pursuit of massive profits.”

Oil and gas industry leaders from Texas, which is leading the U.S. in energy production, say the request is “not surprising,” a distraction and misguided.

“The actions of ExxonMobil, Shell, and potentially other fossil fuel companies represent a clear violation of federal racketeering laws, truth in advertising laws, consumer protection laws, and potentially other laws, and the Department must act swiftly to hold them accountable for their unlawful actions,” the senators wrote in their July 31 letter. “The fossil fuel industry has had scientific evidence about the dangers of climate change and the role that burning fossil fuels play in increasing global temperatures for more than 50 years.”

The senators cite Edward Teller, the theoretical physicist known as "the father of the hydrogen bomb," who in 1959 warned the American Petroleum Institute that carbon emissions from the burning of fossil fuels would raise global temperatures. They also cite a lawsuit filed by the state of Minnesota, which claims the fossil fuel industry “spent millions on advertising and public relations … to continue to earn profits by conducting business as usual.”

Industry leaders point out that the computer, internet, and electricity used to write the letter, their cell phones, eye glasses, other technology, the methods of transportation they use to travel to and from Washington, D.C., are also made possible by the fossil fuel industry.

Ed Longanecker, president of the Texas Independent Producers & Royalty Owners Association, told The Center Square, their request “is not surprising, but it’s incredibly unfortunate as it does nothing to help the American people. In fact, these kinds of distractions do the opposite by putting further strain on companies that supply the energy that fuels our modern society and makes the protections, conveniences, and products we all value and utilize on a daily basis possible.”

Longanecker said the senators are misplacing their priorities and should be focused on real problems facing the country.

“We need to stop politicizing energy security and work together on shared priorities, including creating economic opportunity for Americans, strengthening energy security, and protecting the environment," he said. "Through collaboration and coordination, we can expand the responsible development of domestic oil and natural gas and energy infrastructure to support demand growth here at home and abroad for our allies and trade partners.

TIPRO has also pointed to Texas-produced liquified natural gas exports providing a lifeline to European countries and to methane emissions in the Permian Basin – one of the largest oil and natural gas fields in the world – falling by 76% as production increased by 345% in the most recent decade analyzed.

Todd Staples, president of the Texas Oil & Gas Association, told The Center Square, “Oil and natural gas are indispensable components of daily life, as 96% of the products we use have a component of oil or natural gas as the basic building block. Misguided actions which disrupt the production of these essential resources as part of the energy mix are detrimental to consumers.

“Policy can promote prosperity, or it can hinder it. We need sound policy in Washington that treats oil and natural gas as an asset, not a liability. By fostering policies that lessen America’s dependence on foreign produced resources and encourage increased domestic investment and production, we can create jobs here at home, grow our economy, and keep the United States as the world's energy leader."

TXOGA has published reports on the economic impact of the industry, including a record $24.7 billion into Texas coffers in fiscal 2022, the highest in state history. It also broke records in every production category in 2022.

If Texas were its own country, it would be the world’s third largest producer of natural gas and fourth largest producer of oil. In the first half of 2022, the U.S. became the world’s largest liquid natural gas exporter, led by Texas, according to EIA data.

Those Defense Corporations then turn around and outsource their labor through the federal prison service through wholly US government owned corporations like UNICOR, who use federal inmates as a slave labor force, building and manufacturing the weapons of war they contracted out to the defense company. And again, the people writing the laws that create the tax extraction process also create the laws that determine how and when they can confine you to their prison industrial complex.

Those weapons, created by your slave labor force, are then used to decimate poorer nations that have routinely been subject to the machinations of the Intelligence Agencies who engage in regime change and creating economic and political instability and fostering conditions necessary for war to exist.

This ensures that the grift can continue endlessly.

The media steps in to do two things, predisposition you with nationalism (yay our designated murder team! Flags and chants! Flags and chants!) and to make sure you feel it is necessary to engage in a constant war effort somewhere (money money money). This is done by virtue of human rights stories, misreporting facts, and in general outright lying to the public, who in general are not violent or pro-war.

John Lauro, an attorney representing former President Donald Trump, told Fox News that while the legal team welcomes a televised trial, the Biden DOJ is likely to block those efforts.

Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a protective order against the former president less than one week after handing down the indictment, pointing to a number of Trump’s Truth Social posts. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan — an Obama appointee who has issued some of the harshest sentences in January 6 cases — gave the former president just two days to respond to the order. He must respond by Monday.

Smith has pointed to a post from the former president in which he wrote, “if you come after me, I’m coming after you” in seeking the order, which would bar the Trump legal team from sharing crucial information about the case with the press.

“The point is that we will not agree to keeping information that’s not sensitive from the press … and the American people in a campaign season have a right to know what the evidence is, in this case, provided that this evidence is not protected otherwise,” Lauro said during an appearance on CNN. “So we’re gonna oppose it as we have, but for whatever reason, these lawyers on the prosecution team want to keep that from the press.”

CALLAWAY, Fla. (WJHG/Gray News) - Two women were arrested after deputies say they got into a fight, which resulted in one of them biting the other’s ear off.

 

WJHG reports on July 4, Bay County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about an assault and battery at a residence on Olokee Street.

 

Deputies say the incident started at a house party thrown by unsupervised minors next door.

 

Just after midnight, authorities say a fight started at the party involving several men. At some point, 23-year-old Macy Regan reportedly tried to leave the party and walk to her house next door.

Investigators say 18-year-old Dixie Stiles then confronted Regan and accused her of stealing alcohol and vape pens.

 

Regan allegedly responded by pulling out a 9MM handgun from her waistband, to which Stiles pushed the firearm away and they started fighting.

Officials say at some point during the altercation, Regan bit the top of Stiles’ ear off.

 

Both women received multiple bruises and lacerations. Stiles’ ear was unable to be re-attached.

Regan was charged with felony battery, causing bodily harm. Stiles has been charged with battery.

 

The sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing
