NATO admiral tells Ukraine when to expect fighter jets

Supplying advanced warplanes to Kiev cannot be achieved in the “short term,” according to a top official

Ukraine will not receive Western fighter jets for its current counter-offensiveand will have to make do without them, the chairman of NATO’s military committee has said, citing thelengthy training required for pilots and problems with logistics.

Speaking to Britain’s LBC radio station in an interview on Monday, Admiral Rob Bauer, who heads the military committee as NATO’s most senior military official, said negotiations on fighter jets for Kiev must wait until after its ongoing counteroffensive.

“The discussion on the fighters is an important one, but it will not be solved in the short term for this counter-offensive,” he said. “Training those pilots, training the technicians, making sure there is a logistic organization that can actually sustain these aircraftwill not be available before this counteroffensive.”

Though Bauer claimed Ukraine was in “an existential fight,” he went on to argue that the country has “an advantage” over Moscow thanks to its Western weapons and training. Still, he insisted Kiev’s supporters “shouldn’t mix” discussion about the counteroffensive and Ukraine’s requests for fighter jets, suggesting such transfers are simply not possible at the moment.

While Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has repeatedly urged Western powers to hand over their warplanes, only a small number of sponsors have agreed to do so, with Poland and Slovakia authorizing transfers of modified Soviet-era MiG fighters.

To date, Washington has denied demands for F-16s, citing availability issues as well as fears the weapons could escalate direct hostilities with Russia. However, US officials have backtracked after refusing to supply other weapons, including the Patriot missile defense system and the M1 Abrams main battle tank, and thePentagonhas alreadystarted training Ukrainian pilots on American planes.

Germany and the UK have also rejected calls for fighter jets, though Britain has authorized the transfer of Storm Shadow missiles to Kiev, the longest-range munitions provided to Ukraine so far. London has also stated it is willing to partner with a “coalition” of states to supply fighter jets, though Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said the project is “not a straightforward thing,” pointing to training and logistics hurdles.

Ukraine launched its counteroffensive in early June, but the bulk of its attacks have been repelled with significant losses, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. President Zelensky has acknowledged the operations are moving “slower than desired” due to “tough resistance” from Russian forces, but military officials have maintained that large numbers of reserve troops have yet to be deployed.

Pentagon reveals military suicide numbers

New report shows a 25% increase by active-duty US troops

America’s military suicide crisis shows no signs of easing, as active-duty US soldiers killed themselves at a rate of more than one per day in this year’s first quarter, up 25% from 2022’s pace, a new Pentagon report has shown.

Active-dutysuicides rose to 94 in the January-March period from 75 in the same quarter a year earlier, the US Department of Defense (DOD) said in its latest report on the trend. The total was the highest for any three-month period since 2021’s April-June quarter, when there were 97 military suicides.

The DOD is “fully committed to preventing suicides in our military community,” the Pentagon’s Defense Suicide Prevention Office said in the report. “Every death by suicide is a tragedy.”

Military suicides have risen sharply in the two-plus decades since America’s “war on terror”began following the September 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. There were almost 29 suicides per 100,000 troops in 2020, up from 17.5 a decade earlier.

The active-duty figures don’t include reservists or veterans. Nearly 17 former US troops kill themselves each day, on average, according to government data. There were 41 suicides by reservists in the latest quarter, unchanged from a year earlier.

In theactive-duty ranks, suicides among US Army troops in theJanuary-March quarter jumped 32%from a year earlier, to 49. TheMarine Corpsso a larger increase, with the number of suicidessurging by 75%, to 14.

The Pentagon has looked for ways to reverse the trend – so far unsuccessfully. A DOD advisory panel recommended in February that the US military take such steps as banning gun purchases by soldiers under age 25 and imposing a seven-day waiting period on ammunition sales.(how is this going to stop suicides, why not listen to the soldiers?)

Active-duty suicides have exceeded 300for each of the past five years, and the first-quarter total puts the military on pace to come closer to 400 such deaths in 2023.

Jim Caviezel (Passion of the Christ) plays the lead character, representing Tim Ballard, a Homeland Security agent who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of child sex/slave traffickers. Tim is unsatisfied that he has been unable to rescue the kids. Eventually resigning his DHS career and going vigilante, Tim decides to try to rescue a very specific child, and as many others as he can in the process. IDF strikes Gaza after Sderot rocket fire following Jenin op.

The rocket fire is the first rocket fire from Gaza since Operation Shield and Arrow in May.

The IDF struck the Gaza Strip early Wednesday morning after five rockets were fired from the Strip toward the Sderot area in southern Israel on Tuesday night, just hours after the IDF withdrew its forces from Jenin.

All five rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome. A house in Sderot was hit by shrapnel from one of the rockets, according to the Sderot Municipality. No injuries were reported.

A site in the northern Gaza Strip near Beit Lahia and a site west of Gaza City were hit by IAF airstrikes, according to Palestinian reports. The IDF stated that it struck an underground facility used by Hamas's chemical division to manufacture weapons, as well as a Hamas site for the manufacture of raw materials for rockets.

"This attack constitutes an injury to the ability of the terrorist organization Hamas to strengthen and arm itself," said the IDF Spokesperson's Unit. "The terrorist organization Hamas bears responsibility for what is happening in the Gaza Strip and is the one who will pay for the security violations against the State of Israel."

The rocket fire is the first rocket fire from Gaza since Operation Shield and Arrow in May and came shortly after Israeli forces exited Jenin after a nearly two-day long operation in the West Bank city.

At least 12 Palestinians were killed and dozens others were injured in the Israeli operation in Jenin, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. An Israeli soldier was killed in armed clashes during the operation in the city as well.

After the Israeli forces withdrew from Jenin on Tuesday night, Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas's political bureau, stated that "all options for supporting Jenin and its heroes were on the table" during the operation.

"We have sent clear messages to the enemy through all parties that the resistance in all arenas is not far from what is happening, and the enemy must stop its aggression immediately," added Haniyeh. "We say to the enemy that the time has passed when you practice your aggression against our people without paying the price, and Jenin is today teaching you a lesson in resistance and steadfastness."
