THIS DAY IN HISTORY

President Tyler is burned in effigy outside White House

August 16th 1841

 

President John Tyler vetoes a second attempt by Congress to re-establish the Bank of the United States. In response, angry supporters of the bank gathered outside the White House and burned an effigy of Tyler. The protestors were comprised primarily of members of Tyler’s own political party, the Whigs, who dominated Congress at the time.

 

The first federal U.S. Bank, created by Alexander Hamilton and set into place by George Washington in 1791, provided a repository for federal funds and issued currency. However, beginning with President Thomas Jefferson, who opposed the idea of a national bank as “unconstitutional,” anti-Federalists in Congress chipped away at the bank’s power and importance. In 1811, President James Madison and Congress let the bank’s charter expire. Although a second Bank of the United States was implemented in 1819 during James Monroe’s presidency, successive attempts by different Congresses to re-charter the second bank were denied by Presidents Andrew Jackson, in 1832, and Martin Van Buren, in 1837. Tyler, as a senator during Jackson’s tenure, had originally condemned Jackson’s attempts to nullify the bank as an “abuse of executive power.” However, as president in 1841, President Tyler, faced with a U.S. economy plagued by wildly fluctuating currency valuation and bank fraud, made an about-face and “betrayed” the Whigs, declaring the U.S. bank a threat to individual states’ rights. When word of the veto spread, the bank’s Congressional supporters flew into a collective rage and stormed out of the Capitol toward the White House.

 

The rioters hurled stones at the White House, shot guns into the air and hung an effigy of the president that they then set on fire. The protest is considered one of, if not the most violent demonstration held near the White House. As a result of the unrest, the District of Columbia decided to create its own police force.

Exhibition of captured western weaponry opens near Moscow (VIDEO)

 

More than 870 types of military gear seized by Russian forces over the past year are on display

 

Hundreds of pieces of heavy military equipment seized by Russian troops during the campaign against Ukraine have been put on display as part of a massive open-air exhibition just outside of Moscow. Visitors are able to view both Ukrainian-made weapons and those provided to Kiev by the West.

 

Videos published in Russian media showed dozens of trophy weapons lined up at the ‘Patriot Park’ venue located west of the Russian capital. The exhibition is part of the international military and technical forum ‘Army-2023’.

 

The Russian Defense Ministry, which organized the event, said the exhibition includes everything from American M-113 armored personnel carriers and Swedish CV90-40’s to French wheeled AMX-10RCR tanks and Australian Bushmaster armored vehicles.

 

According to the ministry, the event features a fair amount of British-made equipment such as Husky and Mastiff armored vehicles. Accompanying descriptions also relate how and where each weapon was captured by Russian troops.

 

Over 870 types of armaments seized by Russian forces were provided for the exhibition. Most examples are either Soviet-made or produced in Ukraine. The event features not only ground equipment, but also several patrol boats captured in the Black Sea port city of Mariupol.

 

The Russian Defense Ministry regularly reports on the destruction of Ukrainian systems in the ongoing conflict. According to the ministry, Kiev’s military has lost some 5,000 pieces of heavy equipment in largely unsuccessful attempts to break through Russian defenses since the start of their counteroffensive in early June.

 

Russia’s armed forces also regularly publish photos and videos of captured Ukrainian vehicles, including Western-made examples. One such clip featured a German-made Leopard tank.

 

Earlier this week, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said that there is “nothing unique or invulnerable to Russian weapons,” including Western-made arms. Some Soviet-era weapons have even proven to be superior in combat to their modern Western equivalents, he added.

As difficult as it is to run an independent media outlet, there’s a company making it substantially harder. Its name is NewsGuard. The company claims to rate online content, including from media outlets, for trustworthiness, but a closer look shows it does much more than that—its business model produces censorious pressure on news organizations. An investigation by The Epoch Times has revealed troubling questions regarding the quality of and the agenda behind NewsGuard's offerings.

 

Founded in 2018, NewsGuard dispatches its “analysts” to prepare reviews of online content creators and to issue ratings “to help readers have more context for the news they read online.” The ratings display as small badges with scores next to search results.

 

That, however, represents only a small part of the picture. The bigger picture shows that NewsGuard's most potent function stems from its relationships with advertising agencies, which have steered their clients to cut off advertising dollars for content creators disfavored by the company's "analyst" reviews. As it so happens, corporate, establishment-friendly media tend to receive high scores while independent media skeptical of the establishment tend to receive low scores, even if they adhere to high journalistic standards.

 

The Epoch Times emailed NewsGuard questions regarding its products, activities, personnel, and funding, but received no response.

Subjective Criteria

 

NewsGuard presents itself as objective and nonpartisan. Its ratings, the company says, measure media quality on nine criteria, including transparency of authorship and ownership and adherence to standard editorial practice, such as issuing corrections and labeling opinion pieces. In practice, however, most of the score boils down to whether the media present content that, in NewsGuard’s opinion, is truthful.

 

The first criterion specifically looks at whether the target repeatedly publishes false claims. Another examines whether it publishes news “responsibly.” But failing the first one means failing the second one, NewsGuard explains on its website. Yet another criterion is whether the target uses accurate headlines.

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) filed the lawsuit on behalf of members of the Frederick Douglass Foundation and Students for Life of America. The three-judge panel was comprised of circuit judges Robert Wilkins, Neomi Rao, and Michelle Childs.

 

ADF Senior Counsel Erin Hawley, vice president of the ADF Center for Life and Regulatory Practice, who argued before the court on behalf of the pro-life organizations, said:

 

Washington officials can’t censor messages they disagree with. The right to free speech is for everyone, and we’re pleased the D.C. Circuit agreed that the Frederick Douglass Foundation and Students for Life should be able to exercise their constitutionally protected freedom to peacefully share their views the same as anyone else.

 

Every American deserves for their voice to be heard as they engage in important cultural and political issues of the day.

 

Frederick Douglass Foundation Virginia Chapter President J.R. Gurley issued a statement praising the court’s decision.

 

“The city shouldn’t allow some groups to participate in the public forum and shun others from doing so just because city officials disagree with their viewpoint,” Gurley said. “The First Amendment protects our right to peacefully share our pro-life message in Washington, D.C. without fear of unjust government punishment and thankfully, the D.C. Dianne Feinstein’s Daughter Says Her Mom Is Victim of Elder Abuse: Report

 

Katherine Feinstein, the daughter of Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, alleged her mother is a victim of elder abuse against her mother in a recent court filing.

 

According to Katherine, the co-trustees of a trust associated with the senator’s late husband Richard Blum have failed to fund a trust created by the late businessman.

 

Blum died last February and was worth an estimated $1 billion at the time of his death.

 

SF Gate reported Sen. Feinstein’s daughter, who she recently surrendered a partial power of attorney to, went to a court on Aug. 8 to allege the men responsible for overseeing the fund have not made “required distributions” to her mother.

 

She has accused Michael Klein, Marc Scholvinck, and Verett Mims of financial elder abuse.

 

According to the court filing, Katherine Feinstein has accused the three of purposely withholding regular payments to her mother from the fund because she believes they hope to see most of it eventually go to Blum’s children.

 

The senator is the fund’s sole beneficiary of Blum’s fund. Katherine was a teenager when her mother married the wealthy investor.

 

She has asked a judge to suspend Klein, Scholvinck and Mims from managing the account.

 

An attorney for Klein and Scholvinck filed a motion on Aug. 10 in which he disputed Katherine’s claims of elder abuse.

 

“The trustees have acted ethically and appropriately at all times; the same cannot be said for Katherine Feinstein,” attorney Steven Braccini said.

 

According to SF Gate, Braccini also called Katherine’s allegation “unconscionable” and accused her of working for her own self-gain.

 

Allegations of elder abuse come as Sen. Feinstein faces calls to step down from her seat amid allegations she is too frail to adequately represent her constituents.

 

Feinstein, who is 90 and the country’s longest-serving senator, was absent due to health reasons from February until May.

 

For a time earlier this year, Senate Democrats were absent both Feinstein and Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who was hospitalized for depression.

this has been getting worse for years especially over the last two but jobs have always been hard to get in certain areas because everyone else is going for those same jobs. I have seen this happen a few times and then this leads to homelessness and dispair. Even those who are on disability are still being affected by this shit, housing is a major problem, and when these fucked up state governments are allowing illegals into the housing and all that it just becomes a cluster fuck as they intended. This is why people check out and commit suicide. There is no hope anymore for most people if they look far enough down what they think is the path. Certain areas are worse than others, but to also be fair some of those groceries were brand name groceries. Gotta get the store brand.

The latest indictment of former President Donald Trump is even more outlandish than Jack Smith’s blatant attempt to criminalize free speech. The indictment Monday out of Fulton County, Georgia, criminalizes mundane activities like asking for a phone number, texting, encouraging people to watch a televised hearing, and reserving a room at the Georgia capitol. These activities, according to Georgia prosecutor Fani Willis, run afoul of the state’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute. As far as Willis is concerned, Trump’s legal efforts to challenge the election results in Georgia amounted to a criminal conspiracy, with Trump as the criminal mastermind.

On Wednesday, The Blaze founder Glenn Beck revealed that Apple suddenly removed his podcasts from the tech giant’s platform.

 

Reading a message from Apple, Beck said, "We found an issue with your show, The Glenn Beck Program, which must be resolved before it’s available on Apple Podcast. Your show has been removed from Apple Podcast."

 

Beck said he received a link for more details, which only states that his show had been removed from the platform.

 

"Well, we got that one, dummy. I mean, I cannot imagine what they are basing this one on."

 

"This is absolutely freedom of speech. There’s nothing that we have said that would warrant any removal."

 

Beck said that"it’s probably just a glitch," but stressed that it’s "amazing how we have to have a whole bunch of people point out the glitch before the glitch is found and it’s put back."

 

Beck added that he was getting ready for rehearsal for the night’s podcast episode, and said the episode was "really important" and would be diving into the "real crime family."

Smith is trying to set DC trial for January saying 4-6 weeks for his side of case. This is a squeeze play attempt. That would leave DJT 2 weeks for his defense in DC to rush over to GA for that case-—- to jump to FL case mid May. This judge is a black race communist from Central Casting, appointed of course by Barack Obama; although The Hill notes that in spite of her being an obvious crazy-left progressive, she was confirmed unanimously by the Senate 95-0. Thanks, Republican senators!

 

She’s been handing out brutal sentences to Trump supporters who demonstrated at the Capitol January 6th,2021. To the question why prosecutors hadn’t brought more cases against people accused of looting and vandalism in the 2020 Floyd riots, which cost a billion dollars and several lives, Judge Chutkan extruded the following, quote:

 

People gathered all over the country last year to protest the violent murder by the police of an unarmed man. Some of those protesters became violent … But to compare the actions of people protesting, mostly peacefully, for civil rights, to those of a violent mob seeking to overthrow the lawfully elected government is a false equivalency and ignores a very real danger that the Jan. 6 riot posed to the foundation of our democracy.

Electoral challenges have long been part of American history. Only now are they being criminalized.I was one of the lawyers involved in objections to Florida's presidential vote in 2000. A margin of less than 600 ballots determined that Governor George W. Bush rather than Vice President Al Gore won the state and, thus, the electoral college vote. I was convinced then and I am convinced now that this result was wrong. No one was indicted, disbarred, disciplined or even much criticized for those efforts, yet here we stand today.
