Arp 93: A Cosmic Embrace

 

Locked in a cosmic embrace, two large galaxies are merging at the center of this sharp telescopic field of view. The interacting system cataloged as Arp 93 is some 200 million light-years distant toward the constellation Aquarius in planet Earth's sky. Individually the galaxies are identified as NGC 7285 (right) and NGC 7284. Their bright cores are still separated by about 20,000 light-years or so, but a massive tidal stream, a result of their ongoing gravitational interaction, extends over 200,000 light-years toward the bottom of the frame. Interacting galaxies do look peculiar, but are now understood to be common in the Universe. In fact, closer to home, the large spiral Andromeda Galaxy is known to be approaching the Milky Way. Arp 93 may well present an analog of their distant future cosmic embrace.

Invasive yellow-legged hornet spotted in U.S. for first time

 

A new invasive species has been spotted in the U.S. for the first time. A living yellow-legged hornet, also known as an Asian hornet, was detected in Georgia, which state officials say could cause damage to its agricultural industry if left uncontrolled.

 

The Georgia Department of Agriculture said Tuesday the discovery has the potential to threaten honey production and native pollinators.

 

Earlier this month, a Georgian beekeeper discovered and reported the insect to the state. The yellow-legged hornet's identity was then confirmed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service

 

"Georgians play an important role helping GDA identify unwanted, non-native pests, and I want to thank the beekeeper who reported his sighting to us," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper in a statement. "Our experienced team of professionals will continue to assess the situation and are working directly with USDA APHIS and UGA to trap, track, and eradicate the yellow-legged hornet in Georgia. "

 

The next step for officials will be to set up traps to find out if there are more of these pests in the area. If they are able to find a colony, it will be destroyed, Georgia agriculture officials said. The hornet that has already been identified will be DNA tested so that scientists can determine whether the insect originated from Europe of Asia.

 

The yellow-legged hornet, which is identified as a social wasp species, is native to tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia, and is also established in much of Europe, parts of the Middle East, and parts of Asia where it is not native.

 

The insect builds egg-shaped nests, often in trees, and can host up to 6,000 worker hornets.

 

The press release emphasized how important public reports of the insect will be in its eradication efforts. The GDA encourages people to take photos of any insects they believe to be yellow-legged hornets and file a report here. However, it is important to exercise caution around the hornets as they can be dangerous, the department said.

 

In 2019, a relative of the yellow-legged hornet โ€” the "murder hornet," or Asian giant hornet โ€” caused alarm after being found in Washington state. The invasive insects, which are now called northern giant hornets, were feared also because of their ability to rapidly kill domestic honeybee and hornet species. Washington state eradicated a giant nest of nearly 1,500 murder hornets in 2021.

An Antisemitic Conspiracy Theory is Being Shared on Telegram to Justify Russiaโ€™s Invasion of Ukraine

This Dispatch explores how the antisemitic โ€œKhazarian Mafiaโ€ conspiracy theory is being directed at the war in Ukraine. It outlines how a lack of historic sources on the Khazar empire and a highly contested hypothesis about Ashkenazi Jews have inspired antisemitic conspiracy theories that are now being weaponised against Ukraine.

 

The research predominantly focuses on German-language far-right and conspiracy Telegram channels. However, some of the content discussed was shared from English-language sources or translated to German from other languages.

Like any major crisis in the digital age, Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine has spurred a barrage of conspiracy theories and disinformation online. While allusions to the (usually misrepresented) past are common in many conspiracy theories focused on geopolitics, history has become a particularly hot topic in this case. From denying Ukrainiansโ€™ ethnic identity to decrying its government as fascists, distortions of history have become tools used to undermine Ukraineโ€™s right to exist as an independent and democratic state.

 

As with many contemporary conspiracy theories, antisemitism has been present in several narratives about the invasion, ranging from direct attacks on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyโ€™s Jewish heritage, to tropes about global elites having their sinister plans foiled by Putinโ€™s decision to invade. One of the antisemitic conspiracy theories being used to justify Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine is the Khazarian Mafia.

He began on Aug. 13 when he wrote, โ€œMe and Fake aโ€” a snake (President Barack Obama) when he was a nobody,โ€ along with a throwback photo of them in Kenyan garb. The next day, he commented, โ€œBefore he became a SNOB,โ€ on the post.

 

The vitriol spilled into more tweets that read, โ€œI just wanted to be Fake aโ€” a snakes (President Barack Obama)โ€™s big brother but he rejected me. He (President Barack Obama) is fake as a snake and is a TRAITOR,โ€ and โ€œHE HAS SOLD HIS SOUL TO THE DEVIL

 

One person concluded the rift between them was a byproduct of โ€œJealousy , plain old jealousy. @BarackObama sought out his family after losing his father. He found love but also a tangled web. They were each otherโ€™s best men. I speculate he expected too much of his brother,perhaps he was lent money for some hairbrained scheme & cut off.โ€

 

Another person told Malik, โ€œYou are just a loser, trying too use the LEGENDARY Barack Obamaโ€™s name to sell your book.โ€

 

When another tweeter offered to help facilitate a reconciliation, Malik responded, โ€œThat guy thinks heโ€™s GOD. Trust me I TRIED!โ€

 

The men, who share a father, Barack H. Obama Sr., were once close, according to a 2013 GQ feature on Malik. Three years later, a shift had taken place. Barack was head of state from January 2009, when he was inaugurated, to January 2017, when Donald Trump became president.

 

In 2016, Malik told Foxโ€™s Sean Hannity that he enjoyed a good rapport with his younger brother until he was elected president. He cited difficulties in communication and an inability to call him as part of the issue. Yet he also admitted to being invited to the White House at least once every year.

 

โ€œBefore he was running for office, he was everybodyโ€™s friend. I think that office has changed him,โ€ said Malik as he claimed Barack had been sucked โ€œinto the matrix.โ€ He went on to express disappointment in the former presidentโ€™s alleged lack of humility.

 

In that interview, Malik also declared his vote for Trump. At the time, the Republican candidate was campaigning against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. One of Trumpโ€™s ploys to net reactions was to gain the support of those who opposed his detractors.

 

Malik was among those who Trump invited to his final presidential debate in Las Vegas that October. The native Kenyan attended. His support for the disgraced politician remains as Trump seeks reelection in 2024.

Talking with Webb using the Deep Space Network

NASAโ€™s James Webb Space Telescope is nearly 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometer) away from Earth, orbiting around the Sun-Earth Lagrange point 2. How do we send commands and receive telemetry โ€“ the science and engineering data from the observatory โ€“ from that far away? We use the DSN (Deep Space Network) to communicate with the observatory. We receive data when we have a contact with Webb using a DSN antenna

 

Sandy Kwan, the mission interface manager for Webb within the DSN, notes that โ€œeach mesmerizing Webb image that has graced our screens would not have been possible without the support of the DSN antennas and personnel, the backbone of interplanetary communication.โ€

 

The DSN has three sites around the world, each positioned 120 degrees apart. There are antennas in Goldstone, California; Canberra, Australia; and Madrid, Spain. This allows us to communicate with Webb at any time of day, as the Earth rotates. The DSN is managed by NASAโ€™s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California. Kari Bosley, the lead Webb mission planner at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), walks us through more of this communication process between Webb and the DSN.

 

โ€œHow do we plan contact time with Webb? Itโ€™s not as simple as picking up the phone and calling the telescope. In order for Earth to connect with Webb there are a few things that happen prior to scheduling a contact. On average, the Webb mission operations center connects with the observatory at least 2-3 times in a 24-hour period. There are mission planners at STScI where the Mission Operations Center (MOC) is located, mission schedulers at JPL, and of course at the DSN complexes. The mission planners at STScI work together with the mission schedulers at JPL to create contacts with Webb.

 

โ€œHow do we know when we can contact Webb? The Flight Dynamics Facility at NASAโ€™s Goddard Space Flight Center sends the MOC at STScI the view periods in which the observatory is visible from those three different DSN sites. The mission scheduler compares those times to what is available in the scheduling system where other missions are competing for time with their spacecraft. All missions require specific amounts of time to communicate with their spacecraft, and the timing depends on where the spacecraft are in space. There are times when conflicts between multiple missions request the same resource at the same time. When this happens, our mission scheduler at JPL will negotiate with other missions to come to a compromise that satisfies all of the missions. Once all negotiations are complete, schedules are sent to the mission planners up to 6 months in advance. The scheduling for the first 8 weeks is fixed, with no changes allowed unless there is an emergency or important event with a spacecraft. The later periods are subject to continuing negotiations.

โ€œEach of the DSN complexes has different types of antennas, including 70-meter (230-foot in diameter), 34-meter (111-foot in diameter), and 26-meter (85-foot in diameter) antennas. The DSN complexes use the 34-meter antennas to talk with Webb with the 70-meter antennas as a backup. The DSN supports different radio frequency allocations, such as the S-band and Ka-band frequencies that Webb uses. S-band has a lower bandwidth, and we use that to send commands to the spacecraft (e.g., start recorder playback), to receive engineering telemetry to monitor the health and safety of the observatory, and for ranging. Ranging is the process of determining Webbโ€™s position and trajectory by the delay between when the signal is sent up and when it is received back on the ground.

 

โ€œWe use Ka-band to downlink stored science and engineering data, and some telemetry from the spacecraft. If we used S-band to downlink data, it would take many days to download each dayโ€™s data. With Ka-band, it takes much less time, and we can usually complete download all of the stored data in a couple of hours. The high gain antenna on Webb is used for Ka-band downlink and the medium gain antenna is used for S-band uplink and downlink when both antennas are pointed directly at the complex for a contact. Most of our contacts are 2-6 hours in length.

Normally, we request at least 4-hour contacts. Since DSN hosts almost 40 different missions, scheduling is complicated.

 

โ€œThere are times when our contacts are very short and times when they are longer. In each contact, it is important to downlink as much data as we can since the telescope continually makes science observations and acquires more data. When we are not in contact, the telescope continues to autonomously perform science observations. These data are stored on a solid-state recorder and downlinked on our next contact. After the Webb MOC at STScI receives the data and ingests them into the Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescope for processing and calibration, the observers will receive the data from their observations.

The information showed that in fact, Perry never requested an absentee ballot, never turned one in, and was forced to surrender an absentee ballot he never requested and never filled out and never turned in so that he could vote in person in the general election of 2020.

 

The fraud was in the Secretary of State website. It showed an absentee ballot had been turned in (in his name) but he had never turned one in.

 

Who turned in an absentee ballot in Perryโ€™s name?

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein alleges financial abuse in lawsuit over her husband's estate

 

WASHINGTON โ€” Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has called to remove the trustees of her late husbandโ€™s estate, alleging that they committed financial abuse against her, according to a lawsuit filed earlier this month.

 

Feinsteinโ€™s late husband, Richard Blum, died last year. According to the lawsuit, he established a trust in the 1990s that was supposed to be created for the California lawmaker after his death. The trust was required to be funded with $5 million in cash and other securities, with Feinsteinโ€™s income distributed to her in frequent installments.

 

The lawsuit alleges that the current trustees of Blumโ€™s account โˆ’ Michael Klein, Marc Scholvinck and Verett Mims โˆ’ haven't funded or made any of the required income distributions to the 90-year-old senator, and have refused Feinsteinโ€™s requests to do so.

 

โ€œThe Trustees have committed financial abuse of Senator Feinsteinโ€ฆ by wrongfully withholding distributions to which the RCB Trust entitles her in bad faith and diverting assets that they should have used" to fund the trust, the lawsuit says.

 

The filing marks the latest development in Feinsteinโ€™s legal struggle after her husband's death. She also filed lawsuits alleging similar misconduct in both June and July, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

 

The July filing alleged that Feinstein had โ€œincurred significant medical expenses.โ€ Feinstein spent nearly three months away from Congress after she was hospitalized with shingles in March earlier this year, and she has suffered other illnesses and health scares.

 

In response to that filing, Steven Braccini, an attorney representing Klein and Scholvinck, said in a statement that his clients had โ€œnever denied any disbursement to Senator Feinstein, let alone for medical expenses,โ€ according to CBS News. The August lawsuit denies Braccini's claim.

 

A hearing for the June case is scheduled later this month and a hearing for the July case is scheduled for September, the Chronicle reported.

Body of strangled 11-year-old Texas girl found hidden under bed after sex assault, police say

 

Police in southeast Texas are investigating after they say someone sexually assaulted and strangled an 11-year old Pasadena girl found hidden under her bed in her home over the weekend.

 

Pasadena Police Department Police Chief Josh Brugger said officers found the girl's body on Saturday inside an apartment after they were dispatched to the home just after 3 p.m. for a report of a girl not breathing.

 

Officer and paramedics responded to the scene where the 11-year-old girl was pronounced dead, Brugger said during a press conference on Monday.

 

The victim has been identified a Maria Gonzalez Xitumul. The Harris County Medical Examiner reported Maria died as a result of asphyxia due to strangulation and blunt force head and neck trauma.

 

Brugger said the child was also sexually assaulted.

 

The case is being investigated as a criminal homicide.

 

As of Tuesday, no arrest had been made in the child's slaying and police continued to search for her killer.

 

โ€œWeโ€™re doing our level best to get out and solve this crime," Brugger told reporters. "As a parent of an almost-10-year-old myself, it certainly is a cause for concern.โ€

 

The apartment, which Brugger said is relatively small, is about 13 miles southeast of downtown Houston, and consists of a "fairly close-knit community" and is "a relatively quiet complex."

 

The chief said Maria and her 32-year-old father Carmelo Gonzalez, lived alone in the apartment and her dad left the home for work about 9:45 a.m. the day of the killing. Shortly after 10 a.m., he said, Maria messaged her father there was unknown person knocking at the front door.

 

"That was last communication he had with his daughter," Brugger said.

 

Soon after, Maria's father asked family members who also lived in the apartment complex to check on her, Brugger said.

 

"An aunt and uncle went into the apartment and did a cursory check and were unable to locate her," the chief said.

 

Police said her father came home from work about 3 p.m. and found his daughter's body concealed underneath the bed in her bedroom โˆ’ purposely hidden.

 

Brugger said the father is not a suspect in the capital murder case.

 

Maria was not yet enrolled in school, Brugger said. She and her family, originally from Guatemala, had recently moved to Pasadena from Austin, he said, and had lived in Florida before that.

 

"It's certainly a very violent crime," said Brugger, who called the circumstances of the case brutal.

 

The case remained under investigation on Tuesday.

XRISM Spacecraft Will Open New Window on the X-ray Cosmos

The upcoming XRISM (X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission, pronounced โ€œcrismโ€) spacecraft will study the universeโ€™s hottest regions, largest structures, and objects with the strongest gravity.

 

Led by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), XRISM will peer into these cosmic extremes using spectroscopy, the study of how light and matter interact. In this explainer, video producer Sophia Roberts from NASAโ€™s Goddard Space Flight Center walks us through how understanding spectroscopy deepens our knowledge of the universe.

 

โ€œI think we all get excited for the beautiful images we get from missions like NASAโ€™s James Webb Space Telescope,โ€ Roberts said. โ€œBut after taking a deep dive into spectroscopy, I really appreciate the critical context it gives scientists about the story behind those pictures.โ€

 

XRISMโ€™s microcalorimeter spectrometer, named Resolve, is a collaboration between JAXA and NASA. It will create spectra, measurements of lightโ€™s intensity over a range of energies, for X-rays from 400 to 12,000 electron volts. (For comparison, visible light energies range from about 2 to 3 electron volts.)

 

To do this, Resolve measures tiny temperature changes created when an X-ray hits its 6-by-6-pixel detector. To measure that minuscule increase and determine the X-rayโ€™s energy, the detector needs to cool down to around minus 460 Fahrenheit (around minus 270 Celsius), just a fraction of a degree above absolute zero. The instrument reaches its operating temperature after a multistage mechanical cooling process inside a refrigerator-sized container of liquid helium.

 

Resolve will help astronomers learn more about the composition and motion of extremely hot gas within clusters of galaxies, near-light-speed particle jets powered by black holes in active galaxies, and other cosmic mysteries.

 

The Webb telescope captures similar spectra, but for infrared light. Webbโ€™s spectra have revealed the makeup of gas near active black holes and mapped the movement of this material toward or away from the viewer. Data from XRISMโ€™s Resolve instrument will do the same at higher energies, helping paint a fuller picture of these objects.

 

XRISM is a collaborative mission between JAXA and NASA, with participation by ESA (European Space Agency). NASAโ€™s contribution includes science participation from the Canadian Space Agency.

You know when you watch a movie or a TV show and there's a real embarrassing moment for the character and the audience will feel that embarrassment and say, "Oh my God" with a smile and then cover their eyes or turn away while they experience the embarrassment or shame or cringe of the character? That used to happen to me a lot, until when I was 19 or so I realized: It's not real. The emotional manipulation is not real. The emotion is real, but its stimulus was not.
