Oprah Winfrey has expanded her real estate portfolio with hundreds of acres of land on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

According to local ABC affiliate KITV, the mogul purchased 870 acres in the agriculturally zoned area of Kula, which is located in the central part of the island.

The land was sold by ‘Ulupalakua Ranch for a reported $6.6 million to Winfrey’s Harpo Inc. company in a three-part deal; 520 acres sold for $3.89 million, 330 acres for $2.47 million, and lastly, 10 acres for $100,000.

The conservation trust, which is owned by The Erdman Family, protects 11,000 parcels that are used by farms and ranches, natural grazing habitats for local livestock, as well as restoration of the land.

The conservation agreement was put in place in 2009 as an agricultural easement.

The OWN network founder has been a resident of Maui since 2005, when she purchased the historic Thompson Ranch and 100 acres that surround it, some of which she transformed into a garden. She also owns several other acres around the island.

Online, her latest round of purchases have recently sparked a debate.

In recent years, locals have attempted to persuade tourists not to visit the island as a form of pushing back on the rising cost of living. Many have argued that residents do not reap the financial benefits of tourism.

Last year, radio personality Howard Stern attempted to disparage the billionaire by accusing her of showing off her wealth.

“I make a good living, and I’m having trouble watching Oprah,” he said during his criticism of her Hawaiian property that she has shown on social media.

Several fans slammed Stern for his remarks, but the ultimate clap back came in the form of subtle shade from director Ava DuVernay to the naysayers.

Tucker Carlson is worried that former President Donald Trump could be the target of an assassination, since his “popularity rose” after each indictment. Carlson appeared on the Adam Carolla Show Monday night, where Carolla asked him if the powers that be would “let Trump be president?”

The former Fox News host conveyed his fear, pointing to a series of what he views as unsuccessful efforts to derail Trump dating back to 2016 — from the two impeachments “on ridiculous pretenses” to the four indictments levied against him in five months:

They fabricated a lot about what happened on January 6 in order to impeach him again. It didn’t work. He came back, and then they indicted him. It didn’t work. He became more popular. “So if you begin with criticism, then you go to protests, then you go to impeachment, now you go to the indictment, and none of them work, what’s next?” Carlson asked. “I mean, graph it out, man. “I mean, they’re putting him on trial in March of next year in the ‘J6 case,’ which basically consists of trying to send him to prison for the rest of his life for complaining about the last election. That’s literally what it is,” he added. Carolla asked Carlson moments earlier about Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s comment in 2017 that then-president-elect Trump was being “really dumb” for mocking the intelligence community in a tweet.

“You take on the intelligence community, they have six ways from Sunday at getting back at you,” Schumer ominously told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. “So, even for a practical, supposedly hard-nosed businessman, he’s been really dumb to do this.” Carlson said Schumer’s comments, which he is very familiar with, do not cease to “render [him] speechless.”

“I don’t know how you can, in the same sentence, say ‘I’m for democracy,’ and then say, ‘Actually, our country is run by a shadowy intel agency no one elected, and no one has oversight over.’ I mean, it’s not a democratic republic if the CIA can punish you as an elected President, for doing things that they don’t like.”

Carlson, the host of the eponymously named viral show Tucker on Twitter, added that the CIA is an agency that falls under the purview of the executive branch and does not have autonomous power granted by the Constitution.

“Our system is super simple. The people who are elected by the public have all the power,” he said. “They have employees to whom they delegate their power to get things done, but those employees have no independent power at all and no independent legitimacy

Greek archaeologists have managed to uncover a long-lost cult sanctuary dedicated to the god Poseidon in the ancient city of Helike, according to the Greek Culture Ministry.

The discovery was made following years of excavations in a long-lost ancient city, itself the remnants of a powerful city-state from antiquity.

The city itself was destroyed in mysterious circumstances still debated by scholars, but ancient legends attributed it to the wrath of Poseidon, the city's angry patron deity.

What is Helike and its ancient cult of Poseidon?

Helike was once an ancient Greek city-state dating back to the Bronze Age, located on the Peloponesse Peninsula along the Gulf of Corinth.

It is a city steeped in both history and legend, described as being a military power that participated in the Trojan War. However, the myths also describe it as having been somewhat small.

Despite this, its geopolitical role as a regional power was said to be attributed to the support of its patron deity, Poseidon, the Greek god of the seas and earthquakes.

Myths aside, that the city adopted Poseidon as its chief deity is certainly true, and is evident from the coins found in its ruins, which showcase Posteidon's face on one side and a trident, his godly symbol, on the other.

The city's temple of Poseidon was famed throughout the ancient world, as was its other Panhellenic temple.

However, the city was destroyed in the 4th century BCE due to what is believed to be an earthquake and tsunami. Ironically, a city that worshiped the god of seas and earthquakes was apparently destroyed by the sea and an earthquake.

Though archaeologists scoured the seas for over a century but eventually succeeded in 2001, finding it in an ancient lagoon near the village of Rizomylos, with regular excavations happening ever since.

Over the course of these excavations, researchers have managed to uncover many significant findings of the once great city-state. This includes the famed sanctuary of Poseidon.

Now, researchers managed to look even closer at the temple complex, specifically investigating two buildings, one of which dates all the way back to the eighth century BCE.

In this excavation, archaeologists managed to uncover pottery, some of which dated back to the ninth century BCE, the bronze head of a snake, and part of a mythical creature such as a sphinx that was likely part of an architectural relief dating back to sixth century BCE.

Also present was evidence of sacrificial offerings, iron weapons, chariot wheels, clay and bronze statuettes, and some gold.

According to excavation member and archaeozoologist Dr. G. Kazantzis, there was evidence that the religious worship in the temple included animal sacrifices, offering goats, sheep, and pigs. Furthermore, an archaeopotany professor with the excavation found that evidence in the soil that there was also large grape harvests in the area, indicating that wine was also likely used in these ceremonies.

But another interesting fiscovery was that not only was this temple dedicated to Poseidon, which was likely the main deity in the complex, but there was also evidence of another god being worshiped at the site. As for which god that may have been, the researchers are still unclear, and are going to investigate the findings further to find out.

Perhaps the most signficiant finding, though, was that this building was likely flooded very frequently. Despite the natural hazards that would imply, though, locals kept coming to the temple and maintained it, with the archaeologists believing that the sanctuary was of such significance to worshipers that they would rather continuously rebuild the temple rather than go elsewhere.

These findings add to the growing collection of information about this long-lost ancient power, helping put together the pieces of the mystery of its days of glory and eventual demise.

NASA to Demonstrate Laser Communications from Space Station

Aug 28, 2023

NASA uses the International Space Station — a football field-sized spacecraft orbiting Earth — to learn more about living and working in space. For over 20 years, the space station has provided a unique platform for investigation and research in areas like biology, technology, agriculture, and more. It serves as a home for astronauts conducting experiments, including advancing NASA’s space communications capabilities.

In 2023, NASA is sending a technology demonstration known as the Integrated LCRD Low Earth Orbit User Modem and Amplifier Terminal (ILLUMA-T) to the space station. Together, ILLUMA-T and the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD), which launched in December 2021, will complete NASA’s first two-way, end-to-end laser relay system.

With ILLUMA-T, NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program office will demonstrate the power of laser communications from the space station. Using invisible infrared light, laser communications systems send and receive information at higher data rates. With higher data rates, missions can send more images and videos back to Earth in a single transmission. Once installed on the space station, ILLUMA-T will showcase the benefits higher data rates could have for missions in low Earth orbit.

“Laser communications offer missions more flexibility and an expedited way to get data back from space,” said Badri Younes, former deputy associate administrator for NASA's SCaN program. “We are integrating this technology on demonstrations near Earth, at the Moon, and in deep space.”

In addition to higher data rates, laser systems are lighter and use less power — a key benefit when designing spacecraft. ILLUMA-T is approximately the size of a standard refrigerator and will be secured to an external module on the space station to conduct its demonstration with LCRD.

Currently, LCRD is showcasing the benefits of a laser relay in geosynchronous orbit – 22,000 miles from Earth – by beaming data between two ground stations and conducting experiments to further refine NASA’s laser capabilities.

“Once ILLUMA-T is on the space station, the terminal will send high-resolution data, including pictures and videos to LCRD at a rate of 1.2 gigabits-per-second,” said Matt Magsamen, deputy project manager for ILLUMA-T. “Then, the data will be sent from LCRD to ground stations in Hawaii and California. This demonstration will show how laser communications can benefit missions in low Earth orbit.”

ILLUMA-T is launching as a payload on SpaceX’s 29th Commercial Resupply Services mission for NASA. In the first two weeks after its launch, ILLUMA-T will be removed from the Dragon spacecraft’s trunk for installation on the station’s Japanese Experiment Module-Exposed Facility (JEM-EF), also known as “Kibo” — meaning “hope” in Japanese.

Following the payload’s installation, the ILLUMA-T team will perform preliminary testing and in-orbit checkouts. Once completed, the team will make a pass for the payload’s first light — a critical milestone where the mission transmits its first beam of laser light through its optical telescope to LCRD.

Once first light is achieved, data transmission and laser communications experiments will begin and continue throughout the duration of the planned mission.

Testing Lasers in Different Scenarios

In the future, operational laser communications will supplement radio frequency systems, which most space-based missions use today to send data home. ILLUMA-T is not the first mission to test laser communications in space but brings NASA closer to operational infusion of the technology.

Aside from LCRD, ILLUMA-T’s predecessors include the 2022 TeraByte InfraRed Delivery system, which is currently testing laser communications on a small CubeSat in low Earth orbit; the Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration, which transferred data to and from lunar orbit to the Earth and back during the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer mission in 2014; and the 2017 Optical Payload for Lasercomm Science, which demonstrated how laser communications can speed up the flow of information between Earth and space compared to radio signals.

Testing the ability for laser communications to produce higher data rates in a variety of scenarios will help the aerospace community further refine the capability for future missions to the Moon, Mars, and deep space.

Report: Principal of Oklahoma elementary school moonlights as drag queen, was previously arrested on child porn charge

A principal at an elementary school in Oklahoma is a locally known drag queen and was also once accused of possessing child pornography, new reports claim.

According to a Substack article from V1SUT, Dr. Shane Murnan, the 52-year-old principal of John Glenn Elementary School in southwestern Oklahoma City, has moonlighted as a drag queen named Shantel Mandalay for nearly two decades. Mandalay is well known in local drag queen circles and was even recently crowned this year's Miss Oklahoma FFI, a pageant for drag queens.

Despite his apparently troubling personal life, Murnan began a career in education around the turn of the 21st century. In 2001, when he was 30 years old and teaching fifth grade at Will Rogers Elementary School in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Murnan was arrested and charged with possessing child pornography and drugs.

From his seized digital devices, investigators were able to glean at least four images of pornographic material. However, a judge later determined that prosecutors had not proven that the victims in the images were underage. Though another judge disagreed and stated that the images "do represent child pornography," another court sided with the first judge and dismissed the child porn charge.

In the end, Murnan served a short probation sentence for a marijuana charge and had his record expunged in October 2003. With a newly cleaned record, Murnan adopted the Shantel Mandalay drag persona sometime between 2004 and 2006, V1SUT claimed.

Murnan then spent the next several years cultivating his drag queen career. He began teaching elementary school in Norman, Oklahoma, in 2007 before moving to work as an assistant principal at Prairie Queen Elementary School in Oklahoma City around 2015. In October 2020, while still an assistant principal, Murnan was named a defendant in a criminal probable cause initial filing for an undisclosed alleged offense. The current status of that filing remains unclear.

On June 12 of this year, the school board for Western Heights School District — a district in OKC that was recently controlled by the state on a temporary basis after years of mismanagement — held a meeting to consider several administrative candidates, including Murnan, who was nominated to fill the principal vacancy at John Glenn Elementary School. Though most school board meetings are public, in this instance, board members held a temporary "executive session" to discuss the candidates in private. After about 40 minutes of closed-door deliberations, the board returned to the public meeting room and voted to approve all the administrative nominees, including Murnan.

Thus, the 2023-24 school year is Murnan's first year as principal at John Glenn. His alleged alter ego, Shantel Mandalay, on the other hand, has a long, established presence in the regional drag queen scene. In 2018, Murnan and two other individuals launched Oklahoma City Drag Queen Story Hour Inc. Soon afterward, Shantel Mandalay became a regular drag queen reader for the Metropolitan Library System in OKC.

“The most interesting man in the world.” “Reach out and touch someone.” “Finger-lickin’ good.” Such advertising slogans have become fixtures of American culture, and each year millions now tune into the Super Bowl as much for the ads as for the football.

While no single person can claim exclusive credit for the ascendancy of advertising in American life, no one deserves credit more than a man most of us have never heard of: Edward Bernays.

I first encountered Bernays through an article I was writing on propaganda, and it quickly became clear that he was one of the 20th century’s foremost salesmen of ideas. The fact that 20 years have elapsed since his death provides a fitting opportunity to reexamine his legacy.

Bernays pioneered public relations

Often referred to as “the father of public relations,”Bernays in 1928 published his seminal work, Propaganda, in which he argued that public relations is not a gimmick but a necessity:

Bernays came by his beliefs honestly. Born in Austria in 1891, the year Sigmund Freud published one of his earliest papers, Bernays was also Freud’s nephew twice over.His mother was Freud’s sister Anna, and his father, Ely Bernays, was the brother of Freud’s wife Martha.

The year after his birth, the Bernays family moved to New York, and Bernays later graduated from Cornell with a degree in agriculture. But instead of farming, he chose a career in journalism, eventually helping the Woodrow Wilson Administration promote the idea that US efforts in World War I were intended to bring democracy to Europe.

Bernays rebrands ‘propaganda’

Having seen how effective propaganda could be during war, Bernays wondered whether it might prove equally useful during peacetime. Yet propaganda had acquired a somewhat pejorative connotation (which would be further magnified during World War II), so Bernays promoted the term “public relations.”

Drawing on the insights of his Uncle Sigmund – a relationship Bernays was always quick to mention – he developed an approach he dubbed “the engineering of consent.” He provided leaders the means to “control and regiment the masses according to our will without their knowing about it.” To do so, it was necessary to appeal not to the rational part of the mind, but the unconscious.

Bernays acquired an impressive list of clients, ranging from manufacturers such as General Electric, Procter & Gamble, and the American Tobacco Company, to media outlets like CBS and even politicians such as Calvin Coolidge. To counteract President Coolidge’s stiff image, Bernays organized “pancake breakfasts” and White House concerts with Al Jolson and other Broadway performers. With Bernays’ help, Coolidge won the 1924 election….

Bernays’ publicity campaigns were the stuff of legend. To overcome “sales resistance” to cigarette smoking among women, Bernays staged a demonstration at the 1929 Easter parade, having fashionable young women flaunt their “torches of freedom.”

He promoted Lucky Strikes by convincing women that the forest green hue of the cigarette pack was among the most fashionable of colors. The success of this effort was manifested in innumerable window displays and fashion shows.

In the 1930s, he promoted cigarettes as both soothing to the throat and slimming to the waistline. But at home, Bernays was attempting to persuade his wife to kick the habit. When would find a pack of her Parliaments in their home, he would snap every one of them in half and throw them in the toilet. While promoting cigarettes as soothing and slimming, Bernays, it seems, was aware of some of the early studies linking smoking to cancer.

Bernays used the same techniques on children. To convince kids that bathing could be fun, he sponsored soap sculpture competitions and floating contests. These were designed to prove that Ivory bars were more buoyant than competing products.

Bernays also used fear to sell products. For Dixie cups, Bernays launched a campaign to scare people into thinking that only disposable cups were sanitary. As part of this campaign, he founded the Committee for the Study and Promotion of the Sanitary Dispensing of Food and Drink.

Bernays’ ideas sold a lot more than cigarettes and Dixie cups

Even though Bernays saw the power of propaganda during war and used it to sell products during peacetime, he couldn’t have imagined that his writings on public relations would become a tool of the Third Reich.

In the 1920s, Joseph Goebbels became an avid admirer of Bernays and his writings – despite the fact that Bernays was a Jew. When Goebbels became the minister of propaganda for the Third Reich, he sought to exploit Bernays’ ideas to the fullest extent possible. For example, he created a “Fuhrer cult” around Adolph Hitler.

Bernays learned that the Nazis were using his work in 1933, from a foreign correspondent for Hearst newspapers. He later recounted in his 1965 autobiography: They were using my books as the basis for a destructive campaign against the Jews of Germany. This shocked me, but I knew any human activity can be used for social purposes or misused for antisocial ones.

What Bernays’ writings furnish is not a principle or tradition by which to evaluate the appropriateness of propaganda, but simply a means for shaping public opinion for any purpose whatsoever, whether beneficial to human beings or not.

This observation led Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter to warn President Franklin Roosevelt against allowing Bernays to play a leadership role in World War II, describing him and his colleagues as “professional poisoners of the public mind, exploiters of foolishness, fanaticism, and self-interest.” Today we might call what Bernays pioneered a form of branding, but at its core it represents little more than aparticularly brazen set of techniques to manipulate people to get them to do your bidding.

Its underlying purpose, in large part, is to make money. By convincing people that they want something they do not need, Bernays sought to turn citizens and neighbors into consumers who use their purchasing power to propel themselves down the road to happiness.

Without a moral compass, however, such a transformation promotes a patronizing and ultimately cynical view of human nature and human possibilities, one as likely to destroy lives as to build them up.

The former president has unveiled a total of 31 videos over the course of roughly four hours, as of press time. In contrast to the Agenda47 video series wherein Trump articulates his policy positions and often speaks for over five minutes, many of Wednesday's posts hover around the one-minute mark and mostly include subject-specific sound bites.

His first video, which clocks in at 42 seconds, sees Trump highlight his poll numbers and tout the engagement his interview with Tucker Carlson received online.

Lawmakers will question the commanding officer at the time, Marine Lt. Col. Brad Whited, on Sept. 11, the 22nd anniversary of America's most deadly terrorist attack, Rep. Michael McCaul, (R-Texas) chairman of the committee, told Just the News on Tuesday.

He made the comments after the committee met with Gold Star families of the service members killed in the 2021 attack.

The Abbey Gate terrorist attack at the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul has become a powerful symbol of the Biden administration's failures in withdrawing troops chaotically from Afghanistan, allowing the Taliban to return to power after a two-decade war in the country.

Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee earlier called the withdrawal from Afghanistan "disastrously unplanned."

"The Marine Corps finally got back to us after I talked to General Milley," McCaul told Just the News. "I said, 'I don't understand why you're not making this man available.' And he talked to Secretary Austin and now he will be made available to the committee for an interview and it's scheduled I believe September 11, ironically 9-11, and I'll be back in town for that and I'm going to personally attend."

Just the News has learned that McCaul invited all committee members to the meeting but only one Democrat, Pennsylvania Rep. Madeleine Dean, and 10 Republicans participated. The committee's top Democrat, Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, was not in attendance. His spokesperson did not return a request for comment before publication.

Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews initially testified before the House committee in March that he had the suicide bomber in his sights before the bombing, but was ordered to stand down. "We communicated the atrocities to our chain of command and intel assets but nothing came of it,” Vargas-Andrews said. Lt. Col. Whited was Vargas-Andrews' commanding officer at the time of the attack. Vargas-Andrews attended the meeting on Tuesday with lawmakers and the Gold Star families but he declined interviews on-site.

McCaul wrote a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on August 15 requesting that he make Lt. Col. Whited available for questioning based on Vargas-Andrews' account of what transpired before the deadly attack in Afghanistan.

“In the early morning on the day of the attack, intelligence was provided to Sergeant Vargas-Andrews and his team a description of the bomber, identifying him and noting his presence in the area," read the letter. "This implies components of the military and others had more than twelve hours of advanced warning. Additionally, the military’s reliance on the Taliban to provide security at the airport created an environment rife with opportunities for security breakdowns."

Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.), a member of the committee and a war veteran who served in Iraq, told Just the News after the meeting that he thinks the order to stand down on that day goes even higher than Whited.

"I think it's definitely higher than the commanding officer, which is why I've submitted my articles of impeachment on the Secretary of Defense, and I think that it goes one step higher when it comes, ultimately, to a person, when you call yourself the commander in chief, and you're ultimately responsible for the safety of your American armed forces that you deploy abroad," Mills said. "The buck stops at you."

Rep. Darrell Issa, (R-Calif.) also a member of the committee, was asked if he is surprised that the person who made the call not to shoot the terrorist before the attack is still unknown to the committee and the public even after two years since the attack that might have been thwarted.

"I'm not surprised that there has been denial followed by delay by this administration. I think the question is, how much longer will it be tolerated? And the answer from the Speaker has been not very much," Issa, who served as a captain in the U.S. Army, added.

What's the meaning of the phrase 'Stone the crows'?

An exclamation of incredulity or annoyance.

What's the origin of the phrase 'Stone the crows'?

There have been a few attempts to explain the origin of this odd phrase. A croze is the groove at the end of a wooden barrel that holds the end plate in place. It has been suggested that the expression was previously stow the croze, that is, break open the barrel. I can find no supporting evidence for that idea though and have to consign it to the realms of folk-etymology. The more prosaic suggestion - that it alludes to the practice of throwing stones at crows - is much more likely.

I've found mid-20th century references from England that describe it as an Americanism and American newspaper articles that call it 'an old English phrase'. The dates of those are more or less right but not the locations - the phrase appears to have originated in Australia. Most of the early citations in print come from down under. It has a sort of Australian twang to it and is in common with several other similar phrases, all with the same meaning: starve the bardies [bardies are grubs], stiffen the crows, spare the crow.

Crows were unwelcome guests at sheep farms as, given the chance, they will kill and eat newborn lambs, so the association with annoyance isn't hard to see. The link in meaning to surprise isn't obvious, but then there's no particular reason to expect to find one. Stoning crows was a commonplace enough activity and calling it up into a phrase could have been done for no reason other than that the person who coined it just liked the sound of it. There are other expressions of surprise or annoyance like I'll go to the foot of our stairs, strike me pink, I'll be a monkey's uncle or if that don't take the rag off the bush. None of these have any sensible literal meaning and stone the crows is another to add to that list.

Those early Australian references are, from Lennie Lower's Here's Luck, 1930:

"I told Stanley that you had been thrown out and asked him to pull up, but he merely laughed and refused," he explained. "Stone the crows!" exclaimed Stanley indignantly.

Brian Penton's Landtakers, 1934 has stiffen the crows. This didn't stay the course as an everyday phrase but no doubt means the same thing.

"What I says is crows is devils." Tom pointed at the trees, where the blue-black legions sat squabbling and blinking their wicked white eyes. … "Gawd stiffen the crows," Bill commented bitterly.

The outstanding comedy writing team Ray Galton and Alan Simpson used 'stone me' in their scripts for Tony Hancock. This is a transcript taken from a 1961 episode of Hancock:

Tony: "Any room for a littl'un?". They stare at him frostily.

Tony: "Cor, stone me."

Stone the crowsStone me has a clear ancestry back to the earlier stone the crows and was widely used, especially during Hancock's heyday. Neither phrase is now in very common use but stone me is still used occasionally in the UK. Galton and Simpson weren't in the business of catchphrases, although this could be called that, in the sense that it is a phrase that caught on.

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell froze again during an exchange with reporters in Covington, Kentucky.

On Wednesday, the 81-year-old froze up after reporters asked him if he would be running for re-election in 2026.

The incident marks the second time in recent weeks that the Minority leader has abruptly stopped speaking out of nowhere during a conference.

The senator suddenly froze at the podium and did not speak another word for about 30 seconds, expressing a blank stare. A member of his staff then reportedly approached him and questioned if he had heard the reporter, but he did not appear to answer immediately.

“All right, I’m sorry, you all. We’re going to need a minute,” the aide said, apologizing.

After staring off for almost a minute, McConnell finally said “Ok,” motioning that he was ready to answer another question.

Another reporter then asked what his opinion was regarding Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s gubernatorial race.

After McConnell’s aide repeated the question by whispering into his ear, the senator finally said, “I think the governor’s race is going to be very close.”

McConnell was also questioned about former President Donald Trump, which had to be repeated to him as well, but he shook his head and decided to wave off the question.

This most recent incident comes after McConnell stopped speaking mid-sentence for a minute during a press conference last month.

At the time, McConnell refused to answer inquiries about whether the health crisis was related to a concussion he had suffered earlier this year when he fell at a campaign fundraiser.

SEOUL, Aug 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. and South Korean militaries want to more closely integrate their systems for tracking North Korean missile launches, an effort that may soon see more cooperation with Japan as well, U.S. Space Force officials said on Wednesday.

Led by a small contingent of U.S. Space Force personnel - the branch's first official component set up overseas - the allies see closer space integration as key to better tracking North Korean threats and responding to a conflict.

U.S. President Joe Biden agreed with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at an Aug. 18 summit that by the end of this year the three countries would share North Korea missile warning data in real time.

The exact details of that trilateral cooperation are being worked out at higher levels, Space Force officials told reporters at a briefing at Osan Air Base, south of Seoul.

"My understanding is there are future bilateral agreements and possibly trilateral agreements that are in the works, especially on the missile warning piece… with sharing that data," said Major Matt Taylor, deputy commander of U.S. Space Forces - Korea.

There are gatherings planned for personnel to collaborate and share processes and procedures, he said.

"None of those details and have been refined or decided at this point but those discussions are being had," Taylor added.

So far the Space Force component in South Korea, which began operating in December, has focused on closer integration with the South Koreans and ensuring that U.S. troops there have more access to space-based assets, the officials said.

Missile tracking data, including information from the U.S. Space-based Infrared System (SBIRS), which can detect missile launches, is already being automatically shared with U.S. allies through early warning systems, said Master Sergeant Shawn Stafford.

South Korea and Japan rely mostly on land and sea-based radars to track launches, but South Korean Air Force Space Operation Squadron commander Lieutenant Colonel Kim Jong Ha said that adding space-based capabilities would provide a "3D" view of the threats.

Given South Korea's push to develop more anti-ballistic missile systems, gaining data from U.S. and possibly Japanese systems would help it detect targets, said Tal Inbar, a missile and space expert with Israel's Fisher Institute for Air and Space Strategic Studies.

"The whole region could gain a lot from cooperation and collaboration and interoperability of the systems," he told a briefing in Seoul.

VANDENBERG SPACE FORCE BASE, Calif, August 30, 2023 – Firefly Aerospace, Inc., an end-to-end space transportation company, and Millennium Space Systems, a Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) small satellite constellation prime, have entered the hot standby phase for VICTUS NOX, a Tactically Responsive Space mission led by Space Systems Command’s (SSC) Space Safari Program Office. The team stands ready for the 24-hour callup and orbit requirements to complete final operations and launch at the first available window.

“Challenging missions like this is where Firefly excels, and we are extremely humbled and proud to provide the U.S. Space Force and the nation with the critical capability to launch on-demand in support of national security,” said Bill Weber, CEO of Firefly Aerospace. “Together with our mission partners, we’ll be setting a new standard, proving nominal launch operations can be completed in a matter of hours rather than weeks to months.”

Millennium and Firefly have entered a six-month hot standby phase and will wait for activation at an intentionally unknown time. During this phase, the U.S. Space Force will give the mission team an alert notification, kicking off a 60-hour window to transport the payload to Vandenberg Space Force Base, conduct fueling operations, and integrate it with Firefly’s Alpha payload adaptor.

Space Force officials will then issue Firefly a launch notice with the final orbit requirements. The Firefly team will have 24 hours to update the trajectory and guidance software, encapsulate the payload, transport it to the pad, mate to Alpha, and stand ready to launch at the first available window. Once the payload is deployed in low Earth orbit, Millennium will attempt to fully initialize the space vehicle in less than 48 hours and then begin operations for its Space Domain Awareness (SDA) mission.

“What we’re doing with VICTUS NOX has never been done before, and I attribute our success to the dedication and teamwork of our collective team – Millennium, Firefly, and SSC’s Space Safari and Rocket Systems Launch Program (RSLP) offices,” said Jason Kim, CEO of Millennium Space Systems. “You need to have the willingness to know that there will be changes – whether requirements or processes. That’s where the teamwork and close partnerships really came into play. It’s about what help is needed to address a challenge – on all sides – and everyone pitching in to support that.”

In preparation for the mission, Firefly manufactured and acceptance tested each critical component, engine, and vehicle stage for its Alpha rocket in addition to conducting a static fire to verify all systems operate within flight parameters. Firefly and Millennium also completed multiple rehearsals in preparation for launch, which included packing and delivering a satellite mockup to Firefly’s integration facility at Vandenberg Space Force Base to practice all launch operations within the prescribed 24 hours.
