‘Killed’ Russian fleet commander spotted in new MOD video

Admiral Viktor Sokolov was shown at a meeting of senior military officials after Kiev claimed he was killed

The Ukrainian military claims it killed the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. On Tuesday, Admiral Viktor Sokolov was participating remotely in a high-profile meeting, images released by the Russian Defense Ministry show.

Kiev’s claim came on Monday from its Special Operations Command, which bragged about two recent missile attacks on the Crimean Peninsula. The strike at the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol last Friday resulted in thedeaths of 34 officers, “including the commander of the Black Sea Fleet,” the Ukrainian military said on social media.

On Tuesday, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu chaired a regular briefing of senior military officials. Sokolov’s face could be seen in a photo and video materials from the event, displayed on a large screen behind the minister’s back with the caption ‘ChP’ (an abbreviation for the Black Sea Fleet in Russian). Presumably, the admiral was participating in the meeting remotely, as did other naval commanders displayed alongside him.

Kiev has been raising the claimed kill countin the Sevastopol strike in recent days. On Sunday, Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kirill Budanov stated that the attack killed at least nine people and injured 16 others, including two generals. Speaking to the local branch of the US-government funded outlet Voice of America, he said he could not confirm the status of Sokolov.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported a single service member missing in action on the day of the strike. British media outlets have claimed that Kiev used UK-provided Storm Shadow missiles in the attack.

Russian drone strikes Ukrainian jet from long range (VIDEO)

Upgraded kamikaze drones are now reportedly able to reach key Ukrainian air bases

Russia has upgraded its ‘Lancet’ kamikaze drones to reach targets more than 80km away, a source close to the manufacturer has revealed. Video footage shared last week confirms this upgrade, with a camera on the nose of a Lancet drone capturing the moment a Ukrainian MiG-29 was obliterated as it sat at an airbase.

Circulating online since last Tuesday, the video shows the drone descending toward a military airfield near Krivoy Rog from high altitude. Honing in on a Soviet-era MiG-29, the drone rapidly draws closer until the camera feed is cut as it delivers its explosive payload directly behind the plane’s cockpit.

A second drone hovering nearby filmed the moment of impact. With the jet engulfed in smoke and fire, it is unclear whether the aircraft was left repairable after the blast.

Russia regularly uses Lancet drones to target Ukrainian equipment and armor. The inexpensive devices have proved devastatingly effective against Western-made tanks. However, the strike on Krivoy Rog drew the attention of the Western media, as the distance between the Russian front line and the airfield was beyond the previously known range of the Lancet.

“The real problem is that Russia’s one-way ‘suicide’ drones apparently now range as far as 45 miles (72 kilometers),” Forbes wrote on Tuesday, noting that with the Krivoy Rog base and another similar facility near Nikolayev now within range, the development is “bad news for the scrappy Ukrainian air force.”

Developed by Zala Aero, a subsidiary of the Kalashnikov concern, two versions of the Lancet are currently in use by Russian forces. A smaller variant can carry a 1kg payload and fly for 30 minutes, while a larger version can haul 3kg of explosives and fly for 40 minutes.

Both were thought to have a range of around 40km, but a source close to Zala told Russia’s RIA news agency last week that the company “has introduced a number of innovations into the hardware and software complex of the Lancet unmanned system…which make it possible to variably use kamikaze drones outside the direct radio visibility of the ground control complex.”

As a result, the source said that Russian forces wereable to hit the Ukrainian jetfrom a launch point ofmore than 80km away.

Kiev stonewalled Warsaw’s probe into missile deaths – media

Polish investigators have reportedly ruled out Ukrainian claims that Russia was the culprit in the November 2022 incident

Polish investigators have confirmed that a missile strike that killed two farmers in the border village of Przewodow, was fired by Ukrainian forces, the Rzeczpospolita newspaper reported on Tuesday.The probe findings directly contradict multiple claims by Kievthat Russia was responsible for the incident.

The outlet referenced a comprehensive report prepared by investigators who examined all available forensic evidence in the case. A spokesperson for the National Prosecutor’s Office acknowledged the receipt of this classified document.

“We have sent an application for legal assistance to Ukraine, and we are waiting for a response,” the official told the publication.

The newspaper claimed thatso far Kiev “has not made any materials available to Poland”.

The tragedy in Przewodow happened last November amid a Russian missile barrage hitting targets in Western Ukraine. The victims, aged 59 and 60, were killed after a projectile hit a grain farm.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky immediately branded the incident a “Russian missile strike on collective security.” Hours later, Warsaw reported that the weapon was most likely Ukrainian, but the leadership in Kiev doubled down on claims that Russia fired it.

According to Rzeczpospolita, Polish investigators have identified the missile responsible as a 5V55 model known to be used in the Soviet-designed S-300 air defense system. Polish authorities have alsopinpointed the precise location from which this missile originated in Ukraine. The article points out that, given the interceptor’s range, it is evident that it could not have been launched from any Russian positions at that particular moment, including those in Belarus.

Sources cited by the newspaper, who are familiar with the investigation, explained thatKiev was employing a strategy of firing two anti-air missiles at each incoming target to enhance the likelihood of interception.However, the experts suggested that, in this particular case, the projectile in question failed to self-destruct.

Senior Ukrainian officials had reportedly expressed their willingness to collaborate in investigating the incident. Aleksey Danilov, the secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, asserted that Kiev possessed “evidence of a Russian trace” and offered to share it with Warsaw.

According to Rzeczpospolita, however, Polish prosecutors declined to undertake a joint investigation and did not permit Ukrainian officials to visit the site of the strike, citing legal constraints. Instead, they sought assistance through established bilateral channels, the newspaper reported.

The publication also noted the incident in Konstantinovka, a city under Kiev’s control in Donbass, where a missile struck a market, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 civilians.

President Zelensky accused Russia of being responsible for the strike. Last week, The New York Times published findings suggesting that a Ukrainian Buk missile was likely responsible for the deaths.

“Violent extremists” would be “very willing to take action” on Jan 6, the FBI correctly predicted two months before the riots the Bureau helped organize and instigate.

Funny how that works, isn’t it?

It’s a predictably breathless report from NBC News examining an internal FBI analysis that determined the Stop the Steal protests would =•require “law enforcement preemption” but that the “disorganization” of extremist groups would “hinder widespread violence.”••

Unless, you know, the FBI stepped in to help organize things a bit.

Trump’s infamous “will be wild” tweet on Dec. 19, 2020, inviting his supporters to Washington, both the committee and federal prosecutors say, was the call to action that caused disorganized extremists to zero in on a date and time: Jan. 6, in the nation’s capital. The day Trump sent that tweet, as NBC News reported, a confidential human source told the FBI that the far right saw the tweet as a “call to arms” and that there was a “big” threat of violence on Jan. 6.

Emphasis added, but I’ll get to that in just a sec.

Trump’s “infamous” tweet was about as innocuous as could be. The whole thing reads, “Peter Navarro releases 36-page report alleging election fraud ‘more than sufficient’ to swing victory to Trump. A great report by Peter. Statistically impossible to have lost the 2020 Election. Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!”

When a party invite says, “Be there, will be wild!” guests know to expect loud music and strong drinks — not a riot.

But just to be clear, there were two events on Jan 6, one outside and one inside the Capitol. The outside event was the actual Stop the Steal protest, and it was entirely peaceful. The indoor event was a confused riot. And by “confused,” I mean it had everything from peaceful weirdos like the Viking helmet guy (QAnon ‘Shaman’ Jacob Chansley) to the police killing of an unarmed protestor (Ashli Babbitt) in cold blood. Even more confusing, while some rioters — the violent ones — could be seen breaking Capitol Building windows, others were let in by police and allowed a lovely, off-hours tour.

Back to that emphasized line from the NBC News report. It said that“a confidential human source told the FBIthat the far right saw the tweet as a ‘call to arms’ and that there was a ‘big’ threat of violence on Jan. 6.”

The FBI mole told the FBI exactly what the FBI wanted to hear, “justifying” the FBI’s involvement on Jan 6.

PJ Media’s own Matt Margolis reported last week that there are “lingering questions about the riot are how many FBI agents and informants were embedded amongst the demonstrators and what role they played in instigating the violence.”

“How many informants were involved?” Matt asked. “We still don’t know exactly.”

As I quipped on Instapundit about Matt’s story last week, the Capitol Building riots look “increasingly like an FBI sausage party.” For those lucky enough to be uninitiated, a sausage party is a party/social event/dating app/etc. where the women fail to show up.

Then there’s riot organizer Ray Epps, who many on the Right believe to be an FBI informant. The Left dismisses that notion as a conspiracy theory, yet Epps was somehow given a slap on the wrist — he pled guilty last week to a single misdemeanor charge — while others received harsh treatment while awaiting trial and record-setting punishments after being found guilty.

Remember when we learned how the FBI fabricated out of whole cloth an extremist “plot” to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer?

As CJ Ciaramella put it for Reason last year, “The Whitmer case is more than just a high-profile embarrassment. Poland's education minister says he has "taken steps" to effect the extradition of Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old Ukrainian Canadian, to Poland after it emerged that the veteran served in the Nazi SS Galizien formation during the Second World War.

On Friday, Hunka was invited to sit in the parliamentary gallery by Speaker Anthony Rota for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's address to Parliament. Rota introduced Hunka as a "Ukrainian hero" and a "Canadian hero," prompting a standing ovation in the House of Commons.

Over the weekend, it emerged that Hunka was part of the First Ukrainian Division, also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division or the SS 14th Waffen Division, a voluntary unit that was under the command of the Nazis.

"In view of the scandalous events in the Canadian Parliament, which involved honouring, in the presence of President Zelenskyy, a member of the criminal Nazi SS Galizien formation, I have taken steps towards the possible extradition of this man to Poland," Przemysław Czarnek said in a social media post Tuesday.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Arif Virani told reporters Tuesday that he can't comment on Czarnek's move because no extradition request has come across his desk and no one from the Polish government has reached out to him.

Rota apologized to the House on Monday, insisting the decision to invite Hunka, who lives in Rota's riding of Nipissing–Timiskaming, was entirely his own. Calls for Rota to step down continue to grow.

Rota said Monday that he personally regrets inviting his constituent and giving him attention after Zelenskyy's remarks by pointing Hunka out in the gallery.

"I am deeply sorry I offended many with my gesture and remarks," Rota said. "This initiative was entirely my own. I want to really tell you that the intention was not to embarrass this House."

While Rota appeared emotional as he issued his statement, he conveyed no intention to resign.

Another day, another lament about a freedom almost on life support in Joe Biden’s America. This is getting to be like a “Groundhog Day” scenario but with nightmares, don’t you think?

As someone who has spent my adult life speaking and writing for a living, I greatly value the freedom of expression I’ve enjoyed as an American entertainer and writer. As I made my way as a young comedian in the glorious 1980s, free speech was something I honestly thought I would never have to worry about in my career.

Had I been a writer of dystopian horror fiction, I might have foreseen the rise of the 21st-century freedom-hating Left in the United States.

Those leftists are so insidious that they hid their assault on free speech in plain sight by attacking “hate speech.” Well, it’s working. This is from something Catherine wrote yesterday:

A new poll from Real Clear Politics (RCP) highlights adangerous anti-freedom trend in America, as 50% of Republicans and about 75% of Democrats reportedly approve of the government violating the Constitutionand targeting “hateful” online content.

In modern America, it should be increasingly clear that “hateful” is a highly subjective word that can be applied to anything with which a person disagrees. Thus affirming biological realities about sex has actually been called genocide. So not only is the term completely subjective, and thus highly dangerous as a standard for targeting content, but the First Amendment is not meant to apply only to speech that is non-controversial. It is mostly meant to apply to speech that could be controversial, with which some or most people disagree. The federal government thus has no right or ability at all to target free speech. And if this poll is accurate, the fact that so many Americans reportedly think it does is incredibly disturbing.

It’s the subjectivity that Catherine mentions that’s always been so maddening. For a very long time in this country, there was a standard: my offense at what you said didn’t mean you had no right to say it.

Then the hippie radicals from the sixties bathed and took over public education, and everything became an emotion-based mess (all of which is explored in my classic “Don’t Let the Hippies Shower“). That shift led directly to where we are today. The grievance addicts on the Left have weaponized their emotional weakness and are using it to erode life as we know it.

This poll may only deal with the censorship of online hate speech, but we all know that’s a slippery slope that will be greased up anew each morning. Giving a nod to the censorship of online content doesn’t end well for speech in general.

I must say that I’m a bit skeptical of the Republican response in the poll. People can identify however they want in polls, often untruthfully. However, any Republicans who do condone the Big Brother approach to alleged hate speech are monumentally stupid. Things that offend people on the Right will never be labeled hate speech. Leftists, however, can — and often do — threaten violence against conservatives and face no consequences whatsoever. That will always be the case.

The number of young people comfortable with censorship is further proof that the American public education indoctrination mill is having great success. It will continue to do so until we choke it off with greater school choice and/or the abolishment of the Department of Education.

Hate speech doesn’t exist. It’s a leftist construct designed to weaken the First Amendment to the point of unsustainability. It may be working for the moment but there’s still time to fight back.

I’m hoping to offend some people along the way as I do so.

Rota expected to meet House leaders

On Monday, the Bloc Québécois requested a meeting with Rota and the other parties' House leaders, according to a letter obtained by CBC News.

The letter, from Bloc House leader Alain Therrien, said Hunka's invitation has created "a crisis of confidence without precedent" in the House of Commons. The meeting is expected to take place at noon Tuesday.

On his way into Parliament Tuesday, Rota was asked if he expects to retain his position as Speaker of the House.

"We'll have to see about that, and I'm sure you'll hear more later on today," he said.

On his way into a cabinet Meeting Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he is sure that the meeting will feature "very important conversations."

"As I said yesterday, this was deeply embarrassing for the House and for Canada," Trudeau said. "It is a good thing that Speaker Rota apologized personally and I'm sure he's reflecting now on how to ensure the dignity of the house going forward."

Calls to step down

Opposition parties said it's not enough for Rota to apologize for inviting Hunka to the day's festivities.

NDP MP Peter Julian, the party's House leader, said "regretfully and sadly" Rota cannot continue in his role after this incident.

"The Speaker has to be above reproach," Julian said. "This is an unforgivable error that puts the entire House in disrepute. Unfortunately, I believe a sacred trust has been broken."

On Tuesday, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Diane Lebouthillier and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly told reporters that they thought Rota should resign.

On Monday afternoon, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet issued a statement calling for Rota's resignation, saying his errors have caused damage and that he has lost the confidence of the House.

Conservative MP Andrew Scheer, the party's House leader, said he doesn't accept that Rota alone was to blame for the invitation. He said the Liberal government should have done a better job of vetting who was in attendance for Zelenskyy's speech.

"This is a grave incident," said Scheer, who was House Speaker from 2011 to 2015.

"[Rota's] statement doesn't answer the questions around how this person was allowed to be in the chamber. A straightforward Google search will show he served in this particular division. If basic, rudimentary vetting as to who might be in the gallery isn't done — that's remarkable," Scheer said.

Rota did not share invite with PMO: Speaker's office

The Speaker doesn't report to the Prime Minister's Office. While Rota is a Liberal MP, the Speaker is elected by all members of the House.

A spokesperson for the Speaker said Rota did not share his list of invitees with the Prime Minister's Office or any of the opposition parties before Friday's event.

The Speaker was allocated a set number of spots in the viewing gallery and the list of potential guests was shared with Parliament's Protocol Office, which co-ordinates the sending of invitations.

The names of confirmed guests are then passed on to the Corporate Security Office to "facilitate accreditation of guests," Amélie Crosson, the Speaker's communications director, said in a statement to CBC News.

"Mr. Hunka's son contacted Mr. Rota's constituency office and asked if it would be possible for Mr. Hunka to attend the address in the House of Commons by Mr. Zelensky. This request was accepted by the Speaker's Office," Crosson said.

While it’s not really new to any of us who follow politics, the Democrats showing their racism so blatantly is new.

Speaking of Good Ol’ Democratic Joe, if he’s such an inclusive and non-racist, why did he recently feel the need to divide Americans into purely racial groups like “African-American and Hispanic workers and veterans”? And why did he further declare that those specific races of people are “you know, the workers without high school diplomas”? Maybe Grandpa Joe has forgotten it’s 2023 and not 1963.

And if that wasn’t cringy enough, how about this embarrassing incident where Biden fumbled rap legend LL Cool J’s name in a lame attempt to sound hip and then called him “boy”? Yikes. And the sad thing is, that wasn’t even the first time Good Ol’ Joe has used that tired racist epithet to refer to a black person, and it won’t be the last, which kinda makes it impossible to believe it was a slip, right?

His cognitive problems aside, you have to feel sorry for the old guy since it must really be difficult for a hardened old segregationist like him to not only remember it’s 2023 but that that kind of bigotry of low expectations really isn’t in vogue among his party’s Klan memberscohorts anymore. Just because Hochul welcomed them in from afar and the Democrats’ own lack of immigration policies incentivized every poor person from every hostile corner of the world to come to America, it certainly doesn’t mean they should actually come to live in New York becausethey should stay in Texas, well, that’s just virtue-signaling crazy.

How racist is New York City Mayor Eric Adams? Pretty racist. He doesn’t want any more of those dirty virtuous “migrants” in his pristine city either. In fact, Adams recently claimed they will “destroy” The Big Apple.

If the Democratic Party really truly cared about the millions of illegal immigrants invading our southern border, they’d tell them to stay home, not encourage them with false promises to risk violent assaults, rape, disease, and death coming to a country that can’t take care of them.

In the end,the reason Democrats weaponized racism and hate for the last half a century or more is to fuel their ruthless pursuit of powerat any cost. Now, they’re just not hiding it anymore.

Do you see the horse's head? What you are seeing is not the famous Horsehead nebula toward Orion, but rather a fainter nebula that only takes on a familiar form with deeper imaging. The main part of the here-imaged molecular cloud complex is reflection nebula IC 4592. Reflection nebulas are made up of very fine dust that normally appears dark but can look quite blue when reflecting the visible light of energetic nearby stars. In this case, the source of much of the reflected light is a star at the eye of the horse. That star is part of Nu Scorpii, one of the brighter star systems toward the constellation of the Scorpion (Scorpius). A second reflection nebula dubbed IC 4601 is visible surrounding two stars above and to the right of the image center.

McCarthy announced Sept. 21 he has introduced the Space Transformation And Reliability (STAR) Act. The one-page bill would extend what is alternatively called a “learning period” or moratorium on certain safety regulations, set to expire at the end of this month, through September 2031.

“As we look to the century and beyond, the commercial space industry is crucial to advancing U.S. national security and scientific discovery, and I am confident that the STAR Act will help continue to provide this industry with additional time to fly, innovate and grow,” McCarthy said in a statement about the bill.

The regulatory restriction, which limits the ability of the FAA to promulgate regulations regarding the safety of spaceflight participants on board commercial vehicles, was enacted in 2004 and designed to give industry time to build up experience upon which regulations could be based. The restriction was set to expire in 2012 but has been extended several times since then, and is now set to expire Sept. 30.

While it is unlikely that the bill can become law before the end of the month, a temporary expiration of the restriction would have little impact on commercial space activities. FAA officials have said that the end of the restriction would only start a long-term process to enact safety regulations.

“From a practical sense, not much would be changed” if the restriction expires at the end of the month, said Kelvin Coleman, FAA associate administrator for commercial space transportation, in a Sept. 18 interview. “We don’t have a set of drafted regulations all ready in a file cabinet that we can spring on the industry.”

He said the FAA is working to prepare for a time when it can draft safety regulations for spaceflight participants. That included establishing this summer a space-related aerospace rulemaking committee, known as a SpARC, that includes members of industry and academia to begin studies of potential future regulations.

“They’ve just begun some really good work trying to figure out what an appropriate framework ought to look like and what the timing of that should be,” Coleman said.

Developing regulations, he added, will be a long-term process. He noted that streamlined launch licensing regulations, known in the FAA as Part 450, took about two years to develop at what he described a “pretty accelerated” pace.

“Regulations take years to really do, and do right,” he said. “In my view, really to get it right you need somewhere between three to five years.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky‘s great-grandparents died when the Nazis burned their village, he said in an interview on CNN Monday

Speaking through a translator with Fareed Zakaria, Zelensky said, as he has many times before, that his grandfather and his grandfather’s brothers all entered the Soviet Red Army, and only his grandfather survived.

He also offered details about what happened to his grandfather’s parents that have not previously been reported in English.

“His father and his mother were killed in a terrible fire. The Nazis set ablaze the entire village where they lived and where my grandfather was born,” he said.

Zelensky did not name the village. But massacres by fire were part of the Nazi army’s playbook in Ukrainian territory and elsewhere. In one well known case, the village of Koryukovka was burned in 1943 after its residents were shot in retaliation for partisan activity based there; the Jews of Koryukovka had largely been deported and murdered already.

Zelensky also did not mention the Holocaust or the fact that his grandparents were Jewish, even as Zakaria asked him to comment on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “denazification” agenda as “somebody who is of Jewish descent.” Instead, he talked about “the war.”

“When Russians are telling about neo-Nazis and they turn to me,” he said, “I just reply that I have lost my entire family in the war because all of them were exterminated during World War II.”

Jews from the former Soviet Union said Zelensky’s way of speaking about his family history was not surprising.

“Soviet policy after the war was one narrative: the Soviet people suffered greatly. The government would not acknowledge that the Nazis targeted the Jews specifically for extermination.

They punished Soviet Jews who did not toe the party line,” Alex Zeldin, who was born in the Soviet Union and goes by Jewish Wonk online, wrote in a Twitter thread that has been shared thousands of times.

“As a result of Soviet persecution and limiting the distribution of information about the Holocaust, later generations of Soviet Jews came to understand their family history as part of the war, even if it didn’t sound like other experiences (e.g., why did Jews have to hide?),” he added.

Zelensky’s interview with Zakaria — in which he relayed that he has “distant relatives” in the United States, Poland and Israel — came a day after he addressed Israeli lawmakers, some of whom wererankled by Zelensky’s characterization of Ukrainians as having saved Jews during the Holocaust.

While 2,673 Ukrainians have been recognized by Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust memorial and museum, for their efforts to save Jews, Ukraine was also the site of notable collaboration between locals and their Nazi occupiers in the effort to murder Jews.

Zelensky’s speech reflected hisstrategy of devising pleas for support that are tailored to each of the countrieshe addresses.

Both Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid indicated that while they did not agree with Zelensky’s characterization of Holocaust history, they also were prepared to cut him slack because of the desperate situation his country faces.

Office of Space Commerce touts progress on civil space traffic coordination system

After a slow start, the Commerce Department says it is making progress on establishing a civil space traffic coordination system that will rely on both commercial and government data.

During a panel discussion at the AMOS Conference here Sept. 21, Richard DalBello, director of the Office of Space Commerce, emphasized the progress the office has made on creating the Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS) that will take over civil space safety responsibilities currently held by the Defense Department. TraCSS is slated to begin initial services in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Much of that has been focused on getting personnel and funding. “When I started, there was almost no staff,” said DalBello, who took over as director of the office in May 2022. The office has been slowly but steadily hiring and has a goal of 50 people by next year. Many of them will work in two TraCSS operations centers, the locations of which have not yet been determined.

That hiring is enabled by an increased budget: $70 million in fiscal year 2023, less than the $87 million requested but far more than $16 million it received in 2022. “We have made good use of that budget,” he argued.

That includes spending much of it on commercial services. DalBello said Sept. 22 that the office, which requested $88 million in fiscal year 2024, projects spending $17 million of that on commercial infrastructure and $41 million on commercial space situational awareness data, services and pathfinders to support TraCSS.

TraCSS, though, will rely extensively on government resources as well, particularly data from the Defense Department. “We could not be where we are without DOD and NASA,” he said, with NASA handling research and development activities linked to TraCSS.

A Space Force official on the panel pledged increased support for TraCSS. Barbara Golf, strategic advisor for space domain awareness, said the Space Force would provide more accurate catalog information to the Commerce Department to go into its database than what it currently makes publicly available through the Space-Track service.

“We are working to get the high-accuracy catalog released to the DOC, machine to machine, starting in the spring of next year, every four hours indefinitely,” she said. “They will have everything they need in order to be seeded for spaceflight safety. They can then augment with commercial data.”

Gen. Chance Saltzman, chief of space operations for the Space Force, said in a separate media briefing at the conference Sept. 20 that he was satisfied with the focus the Commerce Department was devoting to establishing TraCSS, in part because it has risen to the attention of Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

“She talked very knowledgeably about it, which is very encouraging. That means it’s on her radar. It means she understands what resource outlays are going to be required,” he said. “I’m really encouraged mostly because of the leadership that she’s shown with taking on that mission. They’ve got money. They’re investing the money in the things that they should be.”

While the Office of Space Commerce has talked about having an initial version of TraCSS ready by late 2024, Saltzman said he was not rushing them to establish it. “We’ve got this covered. It’ll be about when they’re ready to take this on because it’s important,” he said. “I just know how tough it is, and mostly we’re going to have to continue to do it anyway for our own purposes.”

Having the Commerce Department taking over civil space safety activities dates back to Space Policy Directive (SPD) 3 in 2018. Progress was initially slow because of a lack of funding and questions by some in Congress about whether Commerce was the best agency to host that capability.

The policy was a “canary in a coal mine,” said Diane Howard, director of commercial space policy on the National Space Council, during a keynote at the conference Sept. 20. It raised issues about funding and the roles of both government and the private sector, she said, issues that have expanded beyond space traffic coordination.

“I think some of those early days of SPD-3 being an unfunded mandate forced a lot of those early conversations about how to make that transition, to be more creative,” she said. “Some of that is baked into the conops now.”

“The Nelson Mandela Foundation extends its heartfelt condolences to the Mandela family on the passing of Zoleka Mandela, tragically last night,” the Nelson Mandela Foundation said in a statement released on Tuesday morning. “We mourn the loss of a beloved grandchild of Mum Winnie and Madiba and a friend of the Foundation.”

Zoleka Mandela born April 9, 1980 was an outspoken writer and activist for health care and justice throughout her life. Born to father MJ Seakamela and mother Zindzi Mandela, Zoleka Mandela was the grandchild of Nelson Mandela and his second wife, Winnie Mandela.

“Her work in raising awareness about cancer prevention and her unwavering commitment to breaking down the stigma surrounding the disease will continue to inspire us all,” the Nelson Mandela Foundation said.

A statement posted to Zoleka Mandela’s Instagram account detailed her ongoing recent struggles with cancer.

“On Monday, September 18th, Zoleka Mandela was admitted into hospital for ongoing treatment for metastatic cancer to the hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain and spinal cord,” the statement attributed to family spokesperson Zwelabo Mandela read. “Recent scans revealed significant disease progression including fibrosis in the lungs as well as several emboli.”

“Zoleka passed away on the evening of Monday, September 25th, surrounded by friends and family. Our sincerest gratitude to the medical team that took care of her,” the message read.

Mandela was 43.

Said the Nelson Mandela Foundation: “Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this most difficult time. Hamba kahle Zoleka, we will remember you.”

Fungi in space have been a plot point in Star Trek: Discovery, but they are also a very real problem for astronauts and space stations. United Nations co-sponsored testing by a team from Macau in China subjected fungi to hypergravity with ESA’s fast-spinning centrifuge.

A team from the Astrobiology team of the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences at the Macau University of Science and Technology of Macau – a special administrative region of China – used ESA’s Large Diameter Centrifuge at the ESTEC technical centre in the Netherlands to test the growth of fungal colonies under double normal Earth’s gravity.

Up until now the Macau team has been making use of 3D clinostats – otherwise known as random positioning machines, which continuously shift their orientation of the gravity vector to simulate microgravity conditions – to test how fungi respond to weightlessness.

Access to the LDC was arranged through HyperGES, part of the Access to Space for All initiative of the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs, UNOOSA.

The LDC is an 8 m-diameter four-arm centrifuge that gives researchers access to a range of hypergravity up to 20 times Earth gravity for weeks or months at a time.

At its fastest, the centrifuge rotates at up to 67 revs per minute, with its six gondolas placed at different points along its arms weighing in at 130 kg, and each capable of accommodating 80 kg of payload.

Their two weeks using the LDC enabled the Macau team extended testing into hypergravity conditions, supported by ESA’s Life Support & Physical Sciences Instrumentation Laboratory team.

Fungal species were grown until full mature grown was achieved, and then examined to check for genetic or ‘phenotypic’ stress reactions.

Next, one of the selected fungal species underwent a second generation of exposure to hypergravity to see if any stress reactions or alterations were maintained, or whether cumulative effects might be observed. As part of the analysis, selected samples were also analysed under a scanning electron microscope at ESA’s nearby Materials and Electrical Components Laboratory.

“The study of fungi in space is called ‘astromycology’, a subset of astrobiology,” explains Marta Filipa Simões, leader of this project from Macau University of Science and Technology.

“The ship’s engineer in Star Trek: Discovery is an astromycologist, but this is indeed a real field of study and an increasingly important one. Fungi have a long history of making it into space and can have serious impacts once they are there.”

The Russian space station Mir experienced fungal contamination as it aged. Portholes became obscured while plastics and metals were corroded, triggering malfunctions in turn – and wider concerns for the station structure.

Prof. Simões adds: “The International Space Station has had its own issues in rooms where crewmembers exercise, with higher humidity leading to fungal contamination on the walls. They have to do a lot of regular cleaning and disinfecting to prevent it

“In a closed system like the ISS, any time you have the growth of biofilms, which fungi use to stay in place, you can have problems. This can be a serious concern because fungi might also trigger infections or allergic responses in astronauts, whose immune systems are themselves depressed in space. Conversely many fungal species appear to have their growth promoted in microgravity conditions – it is part of our present study to try and better understand why.”

Some fungi are always going to make it to space, with hardy fungal spores able to adhere to all sorts of surfaces and tissues, such as the human body. Spacecraft cleanrooms are never pristine in practice; biological surveys show they are home to fungi and other microorganisms.

“We are never going to be able to get rid of fungi entirely as we venture into space, so we need to understand them,” says André Antunes, part of the research team of Macau University of Science and Technology.

“In addition, they offer positive opportunities as well as risks. Down on Earth fungi are employed to make food – such as yeast for fermentation – as well as medicines, chemical enzymes for industry as well as metal nanoparticles used in numerous fields.

“For future space settlement they might be harnessed to cover different types of needs,, including recycling, or mining essential minerals out of planetary surfaces. These are seen as essential in helping to reduce costs and ensure sustainability of crewed space exploration.”

While Andreas will continue to conduct science throughout the mission, his next big step is coming as he takes the role as commander of the International Space Station for Expedition 70. Andreas will become the longest serving European commander, taking the role and the responsibilities for the rest of his Huginn mission.

Andreas is the sixth European astronaut to take this role, which is a sign of recognition from our international partners for the quality of our European astronauts. I am happy to see European leadership in space, as well as Andreas becoming the longest serving European Commander. Being responsible of the Crew

As the commander of the Space Station, Andreas will be responsible for ensuring the safety, good health and well-being of the Space Station’s crew while directing them as one team. He will also work with the flight director on ground to oversee all the activities and operations on the Space Station.

During Andreas’s commandership, multiple cargo vehicles will arrive, as well as Axiom-3, where ESA project astronaut Marcus Wandt will fly to the Space Station. This will mark the first time two Scandinavians are in space together.

Getting the keys

This change in command of the Space Station will happen the day before the current commander, Sergey Prokopyev, leaves for Earth. This transition is marked by a traditional ceremony in which all crew members gather. The departing commander gives a speech reflecting on their commandership and hands over the symbolic key of the Space Station to the next commander, Andreas, who shares a few words about their new responsibilities.

The Supreme Court will let Alabama's congressional map be redrawn to better represent Black voters

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the drawing of a new Alabama congressional map with greater representation for Black voters to proceed. The new districts also could help Democrats trying to flip control of the House of Representatives.

The justices, without any noted dissent, rejected the state's plea to retain Republican-drawn lines that were turned down by a lower court.

In refusing to intervene, the high court allowed a court-appointed special master's work to continue. On Monday, he submitted three proposals that would create a second congressional district where Black voters comprise a majority of the voting age population or close to it.

The redrawing of the state's districts follows a June decision by the Supreme Court in which the state's congressional map that was drawn to reflect 2020 census results was found to dilute the voting power of the state’s Black residents. The map, which was used in the 2022 midterm elections, had just one majority Black district out of seven seats in a state where Black residents make up more than a quarter of the population.

A second district with a Democratic-leaning Black majority could send another Democrat to Congress at a time when Republicans hold a razor-thin majority in the House of Representatives. Federal lawsuits over state and congressional districts also are pending in Georgia, Louisiana and Texas.

Stark racial divisions characterize voting in Alabama. Black voters overwhelmingly favor Democratic candidates, and white voters prefer Republicans.

The lead plaintiff in the redistricting case, Evan Milligan, called Tuesday's ruling a “victory for all Alabamians” and said it puts the state closer to a map that provides fair representation. “It’s definitely a really positive step,” Milligan said in a telephone interview.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall’s office did not immediately comment on the decision.

A three-judge panel has scheduled a hearing next week on proposed plans submitted by Richard Allen, the lawyer appointed by the judges. Allen's three proposals would alter the boundaries of Congressional District 2 so that Black voters comprise between 48.5% and 50.1% of the voting-age population, a shift that could put the seat in Democratic hands.

By contrast, the district drafted by GOP lawmakers and unanimously rejected by the three judges had a Black voting-age population of 39.9%, meaning it would continue to elect mostly white Republicans, according to data simulations run by those challenging the Republican plan.

The judges said Alabama lawmakers deliberately defied their directive to create a second district where Black voters could influence or determine the outcome.

Milligan and other Black voters had argued Alabama’s rearranged congressional map still meant that candidates preferred by Black voters had no chance of winning outside a single congressional district, now represented by Rep. Terri Sewell, the only Democrat and the only Black member of Alabama’s congressional delegation.

“It basically said if you were Black in Alabama, your vote would count for less,” Milligan said. “It was our duty and honor to challenge that.”

The state had wanted to use the newly drawn districts while it appeals the lower-court ruling to the Supreme Court.

Though Alabama lost its case in June by a 5-4 vote, the state leaned heavily on its hope of persuading one member of that slim majority, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, to essentially switch his vote.

The state’s court filing repeatedly cited a separate opinion Kavanaugh wrote in June that suggested he could be open to the state’s arguments in the right case. Kavanaugh, borrowing from Justice Clarence Thomas’ dissenting opinion, wrote that even if race-based redistricting was allowed under the Voting Rights Act for a period of time, “the authority to conduct race-based redistricting cannot extend indefinitely into the future.”

Biden planned on blowing up Nord Stream before Ukraine conflict began – Hersh

The CIA was ready to sabotage the pipelines as early as last January, intelligence sources told the veteran reporter

US President Joe Biden initially planned on destroying the Nord Stream gas pipelines to deter Russia from launching its military operation in Ukraine, American journalist Seymour Hersh reported on Tuesday. However, Hersh alleged that thesabotage operation went ahead later not to deter Russia, but to harm the German economy.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, which connected Russia and Germany under the Baltic Sea, were destroyed in a series of underwater explosions exactly a year ago on Tuesday. Competing theories have emerged as to who was to blame, with mainstream media in the West blaming a Ukrainian commando unit and Seymour Hersh claiming that the CIA carried out the operation under direct orders from Biden.

In a blog post on Tuesday, Hersh alleged that US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan convened a series of meetings in late 2021, tasking intelligence officials with coming up with a means of deterring Russian President Vladimir Putin from sending troops into Ukraine.

“The White House’s policy was to deter Russia from an attack,” an intelligence source told Hersh. “The challenge it gave to the intelligence community was to come up with a way that was powerful enough to do that, and to make a strong statement of American capability.”

By January, as Russian forces were massing on the Ukrainian border, the CIA had “solved the problem,” the source said. With a plan in place to plant remotely-detonated explosives on the pipelines under the Baltic Sea, Biden warned in early February that in the event of military action by Russia, “there will no longer be a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it.”

Following Biden’s statement, which was delivered alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the CIA team tasked with sabotaging the pipelines received new orders, Hersh claimed. Instead of immediately destroying Nord Stream, the team was instructed to plant the explosives for detonation at a later date.

“It was then that we understood that the attack on the pipelines was not a deterrent because as the war went on we never got the command,” a member of the team told Hersh.

“We realized that the destruction of the two Russian pipelines was not related to the Ukrainian war,” the source continued. “But was part of a neocon political agendato keep Scholz and Germany, with winter coming up and the pipelines shut down,from getting cold feet and opening up.”

According to Hersh’s earlier reporting, CIA divers planted the explosives last summer with the help of the Norwegian navy, using a NATO exercise in the region as cover. By the time the bombs were triggered in September, the flow of Russian gas to Germany via Nord Stream 1 had already been slowed to a trickle by Russia in response to Western sanctions, while Nord Stream 2 was never certified to begin operation by Scholz’s government. However, with the German economy heavily dependent on Russian gas, Biden reportedly feared that Scholz would choose reproachment with Moscow over support for Ukraine.

“The President of the United States would rather see Germany freeze than [see] Germany possibly stop supporting Ukraine,”Hersh declared earlier this year.

Hundreds Of Mysterious 'Fairy Circles' Seen From Space For First Time

The drylands of Namibia and Australia are home to some peculiar formations. Mysterious ring-like patterns of vegetation surround barren patches of soil, but no one knows why.

These so-called fairy circles have puzzled scientists for decades. Now, new research, shedding light on their global distribution, hopes to provide new insights into the formation and location of these puzzling patterns.

"There are many hypotheses regarding the formation of fairy circles, for example, they are described as a consequence of the self-organization of vegetation," Emilio Guirado, from the University of Alicante in Spain, told Newsweek.

"Social insects such as termites, which build their nests at certain distances from each other, are also hypothesized to form fairy circles. Another hypothesis focuses on toxic latex from Euphorbia, a genus of succulent plants," Guirado said.

Until recently, fairy circles had only been identified in Namibia and Australia. But Guirado and his colleagues were curious as to where else these patterns might form. "We wondered if fairy circles would exist in more places than those traditionally observed in Namibia or Australia," he said. "We set up a model based on artificial intelligence to look at hundreds of thousands of hectares from space."

It took a month before the model produced its first results, but Guirado said it was well worth the wait: "When we saw that there were hundreds of undescribed sites in areas never studied before we were very happy and excited about the find."

The team published their results on September 25 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In total, Guirado and his team identified 263 fairy circle sites in 15 different countries over three continents.

Further analysis pinpointed certain similarities between the environmental conditions at these sites, such as aridity, temperature, low soil nutrients and high sand content. However, there was also some variation between the sites, suggesting that these circles may have formed by different means in different places.

"I think that the world can be complex and that all the hypotheses of the formation of fairy circles could have a place depending on the site or the moment," Guirado said. "It is likely that all of them are valid where they have been described and that some could be combined in a few places at once. For example, our results show that the importance of termites is greater in the Namibian zone than in Australia or the Sahel zone."

More research needs to be done to confirm these theories, but Guirado hopes that his new global atlas of fairy circles will enable these more localized analyses in the future.

"We hope that the information we publish in the paper could provide scientists around the world with new areas of study that could solve new puzzles in the formation of fairy circle patterns," he said. "For example, these results could also open the door for research on how spatial patterns may be indicators of ecosystem degradation with climate change.

"I would like to emphasize that our study provides new sites with the existence of patterns similar to fairy circles, calculates the importance of multiple variables to explain their global distribution and analyzes their stability. But undoubtedly, more specialized fieldwork is required to provide more information and results on the formation of these intriguing vegetation patterns."

Russia’s ministry of internal affairs has placed International Criminal Court (ICC) President Piotr Hofmański on its wanted list, according to the ministry’s online database.

September’s full moon, known as the Harvest Moon, will rise on Friday, Sept. 29 — and it is a special one. Not only will it be the fourth successive supermoon of 2023, but it is also the final supermoon of the year, thus marking the end of a very supermoon summer.

Fittingly for such a special supermoon, the Harvest Moon will also be joined by a parade of planets in the sky, including the solar system’s largest worlds, Jupiter and Saturn, as well as its smallest, Mercury.

From New York City, the fully illuminated moon will rise at around 18:33 EDT (2233 GMT) and set the following day at around 06:52 EDT (1052 GMT), according to In the Sky. Following the full moon, which will be located in the Pisces constellation, the lunar face will recede, a process astronomers call "waning." After that, Earth's natural satellite will head toward its next intriguing phase, turning into a completely dark new moon on Oct. 14, which will mark the start of a new 29.5-day lunar cycle.

The run of four consecutive supermoons began with the Full Buck Moon on July 3. This was followed by two supermoons in August, the Full Sturgeon Moon on Tuesday, Aug. 1, and the Full Blue Moon on Aug. 30..

The term "supermoon" refers to full moons that happen around the time when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit, an approach called perigee. This happens because the moon’s orbit around Earth is an ellipse rather than a perfect circle, meaning there are times when it falls further away from our planet and times when it comes closer.

The proximity of the moon during supermoons means the lunar disk can appear around 30% brighter and around 14% larger as seen from Earth compared to the appearance of the lunar face during "regular" full moons. These differences may be visible to moon-watchers with a lot of experience observing lunar events, but aren’t really that noticeable with the unaided eye to skywatchers who don’t often scrutinize the moon.

The moon will reach perigee in the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 27, at around 21:06 EDT (0106 GMT), two days before the Harvest Moon, according to NASA. By the time the moon’s fully illuminated face is turned toward Earth, it will be around 224,657 miles (361,552 kilometers) from our planet, according to eclipse expert and retired NASA astrophysicist Fred Espanak. This is opposed to the moon's average distance from Earth, which falls around 238,000 miles (382,900 km).

However, this won't be the closest or, therefore, brightest supermoon of 2023. During the Aug. 30 Full Blue Moon, the moon was around 222,043 miles (357,343 km) from Earth, according to Espanak.

The first planet to visit the final supermoon of 2023 on Saturday will be Saturn, the second-largest planet in the solar system, which will rise at around 17:18 EDT (2118 GMT) and will sit in the Aquarius constellation, according to In the Sky. Saturn’s fellow gas giant and the solar system’s largest planet, Jupiter, will rise at 20:17 EDT (0017 GMT). Jupiter will sit to the left of the Harvest Moon in the Aries constellation.

Mercury will be the last planet to pay the Harvest Moon a visit and will be the toughest to spot. The closest planet to the sun, Mercury is currently at its furthest from our host star. Though it appears in the morning sky, it disappears in the evening. On Saturday, the solar system’s smallest planet will rise at around 05:30 (0930 GMT). Mercury will share the sky with the full moon for just over an hour before the final supermoon of the year sets.

Skywatchers who miss the Harvest Moon will have to wait a while for the next supermoon, which will also be a Harvest Moon, rising on Sept. 18, 2024. This will be the first of two supermoons next year, with the second occurring a month later on Oct. 17, 2024.

Stepan Bandera becomes Ukrainian hero

Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko has conferred the rank of a Ukrainian hero to Stepan Bandera, the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN)

"I decree to confer the rank of a Hero of Ukraine to Stepan Bandera and present a state order to him," Yushchenko said.

He said that the high rank had been conferred to Bandera for his "defending national ideas and battling for an independent Ukrainian state."

Bandera’s grandson, also named Stepan, received the award from the president, an Interfax-Ukraine reporter said.

The Black Patch Tobacco War 1904-1909 Kentucky/Tennessee

The Night Riders was the name given by the press to the militant, terrorist faction of tobacco farmers during a popular resistance to the monopolistic practices of the American Tobacco Company (ATC) of James B. Duke. On September 24, 1904, the tobacco planters of western Kentucky and the neighboring counties of West Tennessee formed the Dark Fired Tobacco District, or Black Patch District Planters' Protective Association of Kentucky and Tennessee (called "the Association" or PPA). It urged farmers to boycott the ATC and refuse to sell at the ruinously low prices being offered in a quasi-monopoly market.

Groups of a more militant faction of farmers, trained and led by Dr. David A. Amoss of Caldwell County, Kentucky, resorted to terrorism—most notably, the lynching of the Walker family and the lynching of Captain Quentin Rankin and the kidnapping of Colonel R. Z. Taylor. Becoming known as the Night Riders, due to their night-time activities, they also targeted and destroyed the tobacco warehouses of the ATC. Their largest raid of this type was their occupation and attack on areas of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 1907.
