Unrest in Mozambique over alleged election fraud

Violence reported across the Southern African nation between police and opposition protesters following local elections

Clashes between riot police and opposition protesters in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, have reportedly left dozens injured. The main opposition party, Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), called for the demonstrations on Tuesday in response to alleged fraud in municipal elections held last week.

Several of the protesters sustained minor injuries while attempting to flee from police, who fired tear gas into the crowd, according to the BBC.

“We once again call on all Mozambicans to take part in a general demonstration to repudiate electoral fraud… This is the beginning of the revolution in Mozambique,” Ossufo Momade, Renamo president, told a crowd in Maputo on Tuesday. Protests were reported in Chiure and Montepuez in the country’s northeast, and in Nampula in the north.

The ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) was announced on Saturday as the winner of the local elections in most municipalities, including the capital, where the candidate of Renamo Venancio Mondlane had already claimed victory.

According to the Maputo Provincial Electoral Commission, Frelimo’s Rasaque Manhique obtained 58.78% of the total votes, while Renamo’s Mondlane had 33.59%, while the Democratic Movement of Mozambique received 6.8%.

However, Mondlane declared himself winner on Thursday, a day after the elections, with 53% of votes cast, bringing thousands of supporters to the streets in the capital, the Club of Mozambique news agency reported.

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by police on Thursday in the district of Chiure in Cabo Delgado province and a girl was injured during opposition supporters’ celebrations following the local elections. The police said in a statement that the boy was “accidentally fatally shot” while they were dispersing protesters.

Human Rights Watch has also accused the Mozambican police of using “excessive force” against opposition supporters in Nampula province. Violent clashes between police and opposition supporters have also been reported in the municipalities of Cuamba, Moatize, and Vilankulos, the organization reported on Thursday.

Frelimo and Renamo fought a brutal civil war from 1977 to 1992, devastating the southern African nation’s economy and leaving almost one million people dead. Since the conclusion of the war, Frelimo has consistently won all national elections and maintained control over the majority of municipalities in the former Portuguese colony, which gained independence in 1975.

Sam Bankman-Fried reportedly had dinner with Hillary Clinton after pumping $200M into former Clinton aide's firm

Former FTX Director of Engineering Nashad Singh told jurors that company founder Sam Bankman-Fried spent massive amounts of money on venture capitalism and celebrity endorsement deals.

Singh is the latest of Bankman-Fried's former colleagues to testify in court, adding to a plethora of accusatory statements alluding to fraud, bribery, and unmitigated spending using customer funds.

Singh testified that he had told Bankman-Fried that he was “embarrassed” and “ashamed” about how the company would spend the money but continued to approve spending anyhow, CNBC reported.

Despite saying the company's spending “reeked of excessiveness” and “flashiness," Singh reportedly admitted that he still explicitly gave the go-ahead to spend even after he knew customer money was involved.

Bankman-Fried and Singh met in high school. Singh worked at Facebook before joining Alameda Research, FTX's sister hedge fund, in 2017. Singh lived in Bankman-Fried's infamous property in the Bahamas and said that he had “always been intimidated by Sam” and called him a “formidable character.”

Singh alleged that he first learned of Bankman-Fried's excessive spending in 2022.

Court documents showed a spreadsheet of investments that included $1 billion to cryptocurrency platform Genesis, $499 million to AI start-up Anthropic, and $200 million to investment firm K5 Global. K5 Global was co-founded by Michael Kives, who "worked in Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's D.C. office as an Aide to Chief of Staff Huma Abedin."

Singh alleged that Bankman-Fried sent him a terms sheet that detailed hundreds of millions in bonuses going toward Kives and co-founder Bryan Baum. Their portfolio includes investments in SpaceX, the Boring Company, and Kendall Jenner's 818 Tequila.

A spreadsheet showed that the investment money came from Alameda, whose money comes from FTX. Alameda had a $65 billion line of credit with FTX, which eventually resulted in an $8 billion debt made up of customer deposits.

Following his investment, Bankman-Fried allegedly attended a K5 dinner with Hillary Clinton, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kris and Kylie Jenner.

In addition to the investments, the jury reportedly received a different spreadsheet that detailed celebrity sponsorship deals. Among them was a $205 million price tag for the naming rights to Miami's then-FTX Arena, $150 million to become the "official cryptocurrency exchange brand" of Major League Baseball, $50 million to NFL legend Tom Brady, $28.5 million to NBA star Steph Curry, and $10 million to "Seinfeld" creator Larry David.

In total, FTX shelled out $1.13 billion in endorsement deals.

German arms exports to favor Israel over Ukraine – media

The DPA report comes amid Berlin's continued supply of military equipment for Kiev

The German government wants to prioritize weapons deliveries to Israel amid its conflict with Hamas, the DPA news agency reported on Wednesday, citing sources.

US Vetoes UN Security Resolution Calling for ‘Humanitarian Pauses’ in Gaza

The US was the only member to vote against the resolution

The US on Wednesday vetoed a Brazilian-proposed UN Security Council resolution that would have called for “humanitarian pauses” to allow the delivery of aid to Gaza.

The US was the only member of the Security Council to vote against the proposal, which is enough to veto the resolution since the US is a permanent member. Nine out of 12 members voted in favor of the resolution, while the UK and Russia abstained.

The vote came two days after the US and its allies on the Security Council rejected a resolution proposed by Russia calling for a ceasefire. The US claimed that it opposed the Russian resolution because it did not condemn Hamas.

The Brazilian version did condemn Hamas, but the US still complained about the language. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the US vetoed the resolution because it “did not mention Israel’s right of self-defense.”

Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said Moscow did not vote in favor of the Brazilian resolution because it had “no clear call for a ceasefire” and “will not help to stop the bloodshed.”

During President Biden’s visit to Israel on Wednesday, Israel said it agreed to allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza from Egypt. The US is still not calling for a ceasefire or any kind of de-escalation and is strongly backing Israel’s bombardment with new military aid and deployments of military assets to the region.
