What Was the First Casino on the Las Vegas Strip?

The first casino on the Las Vegas strip was the Red Rooster, at the site where the Mirage now stands.

Years before gambling arrived in Sin City, the Red Rooster was actually a popular nightclub that continued to serve alcohol during the prohibition era. It’s strange to think that both alcohol and gambling were once both outlawed in Las Vegas, but it’s true. Nevada officials had banned gaming in 1911.

So when the state of Nevada passed legislation legalizing gambling in March of 1931, owners of the Red Rooster quickly took advantage of the new law, becoming the very first recipient of a gaming licenses in Clark County, Nevada. They were granted this license on April 1, 1931. Reportedly, they opened with just a few slot machines and one blackjack table.

Oddly enough, in addition to becoming the first casino on the Las Vegas Strip, the Red Rooster became the first casino in Las Vegas to lose its gaming license.

According to the book, “License to Steal” (a great book by the way), by author Jeff Burbank, the new gaming board revoked the Red Rooster’s license on July 7, 1931, after federal authorities raided the casino for selling alcohol as prohibition was still the law of the land.

the Sedia Gestatoria

The sedia gestatoria (Italian: [ˈsɛːdja dʒestaˈtɔːrja], literally 'chair for carrying') or gestatorial chair is a ceremonial throne on which popes were carried on shoulders until 1978, which was later replaced outdoors in part with the popemobile. It consists of a richly adorned, silk-covered armchair, fastened on a suppedaneum, on each side of which are two gilded rings; through these rings pass the long rods with which twelve footmen (palafrenieri), in red uniforms, carry the throne on their shoulders. The sedia gestatoria is an elaborate variation on the sedan chair. Two large fans (flabella) made of white ostrich feathers—a relic of the ancient liturgical use of the flabellum, mentioned in the Constitutiones Apostolicae[2]—were carried at either side of the sedia gestatoria.

One of the most widely practiced customs is Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) – a barbaric tradition carried out in the name of culture and religion across the world, affecting the physical and psychological wellbeing of millions of women.

“It comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights, the health and the integrity of girls and women. Girls who undergo female genital mutilation face short term complications such as severe pain, shock, excessive bleeding, infections, and difficulty in passing urine, as well as long term consequences for their sexual and reproductive health and mental health,” according to the UN.

One of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals is to end FGM by 2030. In 2021 alone, there are 4.16 million girls around the world who are at risk of undergoing FGM.

In Sri Lanka FGM is not a criminal act. It is practised within the Dawoodi Bohra community. Girls are cut at the age of seven and the practice is known as khatna. In the Moor and Malay communities, girls are cut on the 40th day after birth, often by traditional practitioners known as Osthi Maamis (barber women).
