Two Navy SEALs are missing after a night mission off the coast of Somalia

Two U.S. Navy SEALs are missing after conducting a nighttime boarding mission Thursday off the coast of Somalia, according to three U.S. officials.

The SEALs were on an interdiction mission, climbing up a vessel when one got knocked off by high waves. Under their protocol, when one SEAL is overtaken the next jumps in after them.

Both SEALs are still missing. A search and rescue mission is underway and the waters in the Gulf of Aden, where they were operating, are warm, two of the U.S. officials said.

The U.S. Navy has conducted regular interdiction missions, where they have intercepted weapons on ships that were bound for Houthi-controlled Yemen.

The mission was not related to Operation Prosperity Guardian, the ongoing U.S. and international mission to provide protection to commercial vessels in the Red Sea, or the retaliatory strikes that the United States and the United Kingdom have conducted in Yemen over the past two days, the official said Saturday. It was also not related to the seizure of the oil tanker St. Nikolas by Iran, a third U.S. official said.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss details that have not yet been made public.

Besides the defense of ships from launched drones and missiles shot from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, the U.S. military has also come to the aid of commercial ships that have been the targets of piracy.

In a statement Saturday, U.S. Central Command said that search and rescue operations are currently ongoing to locate the two sailors. The command said it would not release additional information on the Thursday night incident until the personnel recovery mission is complete.

The sailors were forward-deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations supporting a wide variety of missions.

USN Searching for Missing Sailors off Somalia as US Launches Second Strike

CENTCOM is reporting that it is searching for two missing sailors from one of the vessels deployed off the coast of Somalia as the U.S. also continued its strikes on Houthi positions in Yemen. American officials continue to say their efforts are aimed at degrading the rebelsโ€™ ability to launch missiles and drones against commercial shipping in the region.

 

At 3:45 a.m. local time on January 13, U.S. forces conducted a strike against a Houthi radar site in Yemen. CENTCOM classified it as a โ€œfollow-on action on a specific military target associated with strikes taken on January 12 designed to degrade the Houthiโ€™s ability to attack maritime vessels, including commercial vessels.โ€

 

The USS Carney is the only vessel reported involved in the latest strikes which were more targeted and isolated versus January 12. CENTCOM says they used Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles.

 

At the same time, CENTCOM said two sailors from one of the vessels in the region have been reported missing. Rescue operations are currently ongoing to locate the two sailors. They were reported missing at sea while conducting operations off the coast of Somalia, but CENTCOM said for operational security purposes, โ€œwe will not release additional information until the personnel recovery operation is complete.โ€

 

Associated Press citing unnamed officials is reporting that the missing individuals are Navy Seals that were on an interdiction mission. They are saying it was a separate operation from the protection efforts in the Red Sea for commercial shipping. It may have been targeting a ship suspected of carrying weapons and they are suggesting one Seal was washed away during the boarding and the second one by protocol followed in a rescue attempt. The search and rescue effort is underway.

 

The second round of strikes came hours after the Houthis vowed to retaliate on the U.S. and British after the first strikes. They said the strikes would not stop their attacks on shipping and as if to prove it they launched a new attack later on January 12. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organizations reported that an unnamed ship saw a missile explode in the ocean approximately 400 to 500 meters from its position which was approximately 90 nautical miles south of Aden, Yemen in the Gulf of Aden.

 

TankerTrackers.com and others later reported that it was a laden crude oil tanker that reported the missile. The same unnamed vessel reported that it was being followed by three small boats but the vessel was able to proceed unharmed. Later, UKMTO reported that other vessels sailing approximately 80 miles south east of Aden also saw small boats making approaches and in one case a ship said two small boats followed it for nearly an hour.

New York-based BlackRock has agreed to buy compatriot fund manager Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) in a $12.5bn cash and shares deal.

 

The deal will see the worldโ€™s largest asset manager take over GIP for $3bn in cash and around 12m Blackrock shares.

 

GIP is the worldโ€™s largest independent infrastructure manager with over $100bn in assets under management, across equity and credit strategies, including offshore wind farms Gode Wind 1, Borkum Riffgrund 2 and Hornsea 1 as well as offshore wind developers Skyborn Renewables and Bluepoint Wind, a joint venture with Ocean Winds.

 

GIP also has stakes in the Port of Melbourne, Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), the ports arm of leading liner Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) and several LNG projects.

 

The transaction, expected to close in the third quarter of 2024, will create a world-leading infrastructure private markets investment platform with over $150bn of assets under management that will be overseen by the GIP management team, led by Bayo Ogunlesi, which will remain in place.

Firefighters battling massive blaze at North Atlantic Fuels in Epping, NH

 

Firefighters are battling a blaze that broke out Saturday night at North Atlantic Fuels, where three fuel oil tanker trucks are reportedly on fire.

 

Epping firefighters were called to 76 Depot Road at 4:34 p.m. for a report of a vehicle fire with exposure to other trucks.

 

Mutual aid was requested as the fire spread to other trucks.

"Exeter firefighters along with crews from several communities, continue to work the scene of a massive fire involving three oil tankers and a tractor-trailer at North Atlantic Fuels in Epping," the department posted at 6:15 p.m. "The crash truck from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport has arrived to provide fire suppression with foam along with the Southeast HAZMAT team with 500 gallons of foam. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden said on Saturday the United States does not support the independence of Taiwan, after Taiwanese voters rebuffed China and gave the ruling party a third presidential term.

 

Earlier in the day, the Taiwanese ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te came to power, strongly rejecting Chinese pressure to spurn him, and pledged both to stand up to Beijing and seek talks.

 

"We do not support independenceโ€ฆ" Biden said, when asked for reaction to Saturday's elections.

 

Hours ahead of the polls opening, Washington had warned "it would be unacceptable" for "any" country to interfere in the election.

 

Taiwan, a neighbouring island China claims as its own, has been a democratic success story since holding its first direct presidential election in 1996, the culmination of decades of struggle against authoritarian rule and martial law.

 

The United States is Taiwan's most important international backer and arms supplier despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties with the island.

 

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Lai Ching-te on his victory and said the United States "is committed to maintaining cross-strait peace and stability, and the peaceful resolution of differences, free from coercion and pressure."He said the U.S.looks forward to working with Lai and leaders of all parties in Taiwan to advance their "longstanding unofficial relationship, consistent with the U.S. one China policy."

 

The Biden administration has feared that the election, transition and new administration would escalate conflict with Beijing.

 

Biden has worked to smooth relations with China, including agreeing to talk through differences on security matters at a California summit with President Xi Jinping in November.

 

Taiwan's government expects China to attempt to put pressure on its incoming president after the vote, including staging military maneuvers near the island this spring, two senior government officials said. China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.

 

In a show of support for the government, Biden plans to dispatch an unofficial delegation to the self-governed island, according to a senior Biden administration official.

 

The delegation is likely to include some former high-ranking American officials, according to the official, who said the names have not been finalized. Similar delegations have been sent to Taiwan in the past.

 

China was angered in 2016 when then-President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, the first such conversation between U.S. and Taiwan leaders since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979.

Following receipt of a referral from Acting State Election Board Chairman Matthew Mashburn, The Georgia Senate has sponsored SB 358 which would confirm the State Election Board's power and authority to investigate the Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, remove him as a member of the SEB, and order him to cooperate in such investigation(s).

 

Mashburn sent the referral to on Thursday of this week. The referral letter appears below:

This process comes after testimony at the last State Election Board meeting by citizen election integrity advocate Joseph Rossi and others, describing errors found in 2020 election reporting tied to Raffenspergerโ€™s office. These initial findings and an inability to obtain explanations from Raffensperger's office, led Rossi to provide the evidence to Gov. Brian Kemp's office which performed its own independent analysis and then issued a written finding saying that Rossi's results were factual.

 

During the December 19th SEB testimony, Rossi also reported that since the time of Kemp's report in last 2021, investigators, assistant AG Charlene McGowan (who now works in Rannfesperger's office) , and even certain members of the State Election Board appeared to have attempted to block investigations or divert attention from the mounting stack of evidence.

 

Faced with evidence and a public call for investigations into the Raffenspergers conduct, the SEB voted to request that the legislature confirm SEB authority to conduct an investigation into the Secretary of State.

 

After receiving the referral, the Senate acted to create the proposed Bill 358 to allow the SEB to begin investigation into the SoS.

The Georgia Record notes that other Atlanta outlets appeared to downplay the meaning of Senate's decision and indeed the errors shown and confirmed by the Governors office as early as late 2021. They omit comment on the steps observed from investigators, Charlene McGowan and certain members of the State Election Board that may suggest a cover-up to shield the SoS office from further inquiry.

 

In an email sent August 6, 2023, to then-Chairman of the SEB William Duffey, Charlene McGowan wrote: "Judge Duffey, I understand that you have asked Sarah (SOS Director of Investigations) to open a new case on Mr. Rossi's complaint against the Secretary of State's office regarding the posting of the county-level RLA results for the 2020 presidential electionโ€ฆI have instructed our investigations division that this office will not be opening up a case on this complaintโ€ฆI trust with this information that the Board will inform Mr. Rossi that no case will be opened on this matter."

Notably, Raffensperger avoided appearance before the Senate Ethics Committee in November, opting instead to attend a "Rotary Meeting" in Sothern Georgia. In his place he sent Charlene McGowan flanked by a representative of Dominion Voting Systems to answer questions from the committee, many of which went unanswered or differed.

Many eyes now rest on the Senate Bill proposed. Will this finally spark the process to get answers from Brad Raffensperger that have been avoided to date? We will see.

Democrats Bring Bill To Prohibit Armed Citizen Militias

 

Democrat lawmakers are advancing legislation intended to prevent privately organized paramilitary and militia group activities within the United States.

 

Introduced by Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) on Thursday, the bill dubbed the โ€œPreventing Private Paramilitary Activity Actโ€ would prohibit privately organized groups from โ€œpublicly patrolling, drilling, or engaging in harmful or deadly paramilitary techniques,โ€ โ€œinterfering with or interrupting government proceedings,โ€ or โ€œinterfering with the exercise of someone elseโ€™s constitutional rights,โ€ according to Mr. Markey.

 

Their bills defines a โ€œprivate paramilitary organizationโ€ as โ€œany group of 3 or more persons associating under a command structure for the purpose of functioning in public or training to function in public as a combat, combat support, law enforcement, or security services unit.โ€ The bill states acting with or on behalf of such a private paramilitary organization while armed with a firearm, explosive, incendiary device, or other dangerous weapon, and engaging in patrolling, training, interfering with government or constitutional rights, or assuming the functions of law enforcement without official authority.

 

The bill makes exceptions for members of the National Guard and other military reserve components, state guard forces, and members of other federal or state-organized groups to train in and apply paramilitary, law enforcement, and security service activity. The bill also allows for the organization of groups formed solely to conduct military reenactments, โ€œbona-fide veterans organization with no intent to engageโ€ in the aforementioned prohibited activities, and students in government or state-authorized educational institutions that teach military science.

 

Lawmakers Bring Bill in Response to Capitol Breach

Mr. Markey and Mr. Raskin introduced their legislation just days after the three-year anniversary of the breach at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, a point they repeatedly referenced in a press release announcing the bill.

 

โ€œPatrolling neighborhoods, impeding law enforcement and storming the U.S. Capitol, private paramilitary groups like the Oath Keepers, the Three Percenters and the Proud Boys are using political violence to intimidate our people and threaten democratic government and the rule of law,โ€ Mr. Raskin said. โ€œOur legislation makes the obvious but essential clarification that these domestic extremistsโ€™ paramilitary operations are in no way protected by our Constitution.โ€

In March of 2020 the United States Space Force (USSF) declared operational acceptance and initial operational capability of the Space Fence radar on the Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Space Fence, now the worldโ€™s most advanced radar, provides uncued detection, tracking and accurate measurement of space objects, including satellites and orbital debris, primarily in low-earth orbit (LEO). The new radar permits the detection of much smaller microsatellites and debris than current systems.

How Things Work: Space Fence

The new S-band phased-array radar will have tens of thousands of transmitters and hundreds of thousands of receivers, supported by structures capable of withstanding seismic activity. One of the largest S-band arrays in the world, the receiver alone measures 7,000 square feet. The transmitter is 2,000 square feet. Both will be enclosed in buildings with roofs of electronically transparent Kevlar. Within each element, gallium nitride semiconductors amplify the radarโ€™s power. In a phased array, the elements can be pulsed separately, so the installation will be able to simultaneously search for and track individual objects.

 

Airspace above the array will be restricted to air travel, though the radar is expected not to harm birds because exposure times will be short, though personnel will monitor bird activity.

New French FM makes pledge to Kiev

Aiding Kiev against Moscow will remain โ€œa priority,โ€ Stephane Sejourne said

 

France will not stop supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, new French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne told reporters during his trip to Kiev on Saturday. He made his statement as Western countries are struggling to come to an agreement about additional military and financial aid for the embattled country.

 

Sejourne arrived in the Ukrainian capital just two days after he was appointed to his position as part of a government reshuffle.

 

โ€œUkraine is and will remain Franceโ€™s priority.The defense of the fundamental principles of international law is being played out in Ukraine,โ€ he said during a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba. โ€œRussia is hoping that Ukraine and its supporters will tire before it does. We will not weaken.โ€

 

โ€œThat is the message that I am carrying here to the Ukrainians. Our determination is intact,โ€Sejourne said. He announced โ€œa new phase of defense cooperation,โ€ with the aim of โ€œstrengthening Ukraineโ€™s capacity to produce [the weapons it needs] on its own territory.โ€

 

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky thanked France for โ€œunwavering defense support for our soldiers and assistance to our people.โ€Kuleba wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that he and Sejourne discussed imposing new sanctions on Russia and โ€œestablishing a mechanism to use Russian assets for Ukraineโ€™s benefit.โ€

 

โ€œWe also agreed to facilitate and scale up further Ukrainian-French defense cooperation,โ€ Kuleba said.

 

France has been one of Kievโ€™s top weapons suppliers, having delivered AMX-10RC armored vehicles and SCALP air-launched cruise missiles.

 

Sejourneโ€™s visit came at a difficult time for Kiev, as Zelensky and other top officials are renewing their calls for more sophisticated weapon systems in the wake of Ukraineโ€™s failed summer counteroffensive.

 

White House national security spokesman John Kirby said on Thursday that the US assistance has effectively โ€œground to a haltโ€because Republicans in Congress refused to back President Joe Bidenโ€™s proposal for the additional $60 billion package for Ukraine.

 

The EUโ€™s plan for the โ‚ฌ50 billion ($54 billion) aid package was similarly blocked last month by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is opposing the continuation of unconditional aid for Kiev.
