SAN FRANCISCO/WASHINGTON, Jan 9 (Reuters) - The hack of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's official account on X on Tuesday renewed concerns about the social media platform's security since its takeover by billionaire Elon Musk in 2022.

 

The hackers posted false news about a widely anticipated announcement the SEC was expected to make about bitcoin, leading the cryptocurrency's price to spike and alarming observers. The false post on @SECGov said the securities regulator had approved exchange-traded funds to hold bitcoin. The SEC deleted the post about 30 minutes after it appeared.

 

X confirmed later on Tuesday, following a preliminary investigation, that the SEC's account was compromised because an unidentified individual gained control over a phone number associated with the account through a third party.

 

The social media platform also said in a post that the SEC did not have two-factor authentication enabled at the time the account was compromised.

 

While X said the compromise was not because of a breach of the platform's systems, security analysts called the incident disquieting.

 

"Something like that, where you can take over the SEC account and potentially affect the value of bitcoin in the market - there's massive opportunity for disinformation," said Austin Berglas, a former cybersecurity official at the FBI's New York office and a senior executive at the security firm BlueVoyant.

 

Accounts on X, formerly known as Twitter, can be hijacked by stealing passwords or tricking targets into giving up their login credentials, just like on any other social media platform. Accounts can also be taken over by breaching X's security, as happened in 2020, when a teenager masterminded a break-in of Twitter's internal computer network and seized control of dozens of high-profile accounts, including those of former President Barack Obama and Musk, well before he bought Twitter.

 

An SEC spokesperson on Tuesday said the "unauthorized access" of its account by an "unknown party" had been revoked and the agency was working with law enforcement and others in the government to investigate the matter.

 

SECURITY PROBLEMS

Even before it was acquired by Musk and changed its name to X, however, Twitter was the subject of persistent security problems.

 

The 2019 arrest of a Saudi agent who had secretly combed the site's backend for personal information about the kingdom's dissidents raised concerns about Twitter's internal safeguards.

 

The mass hijacking of top accounts the following year by the Florida teen heightened the concerns, with New York state's Department of Financial Services scolding the firm for falling prey to a "simple" hack. In 2022 Twitter's former security chief Peiter Zatko publicly turned on the company, before it was acquired by Musk, accusing it of a litany of security failings that he said jeopardized national security.

 

Musk has touted the company's security since buying Twitter in October 2022, but former staff say it has worsened since then. Musk ordered a 50% cut in X's physical security budget after buying the social media platform, and wanted to scrap programs aimed at helping it find and fix digital vulnerabilities, according to a lawsuit filed last month by Alan Rosa, former IT security chief at X. Rosa alleges he was fired when he objected to the measures.

 

A former Twitter executive, who declined to be named, said the protection of prominent accounts such as those of government officials was a major focus there prior to Musk's acquisition, and included alerts for suspected hacks with rapid response measures, but staffers who worked on that effort were part of an "election integrity" team that suffered layoffs last year.

 

Early last year, X limited the ability of non-paying users to implement two-factor authentication, a key security measure. X's website says the firm "proactively" protects and secures the accounts of government officials and political candidates that "may be particularly vulnerable during certain civic processes."

 

Without such security in place, hackers could have taken over the account through various methods including using an old leaked password or gaining access to a phone number linked to the account through a technique known as SIM swapping, said Berglas.

 

"Anytime you're reducing a security function in a platform that does what X does, it is incredibly concerning," he added.

The Texas Supreme Court rejected a recent petition from the Texas Nationalist Movement to place a petition on the state’s March primary that would allow voters to decide whether the state should secede from the United States.

 

The movement, which has been going on for decades, filed an emergency petition against the state Republican Party to get its petition on the primary ballot after it was rejected by the Texas GOP.

 

The latest move to separate Texas from the U.S. started last year after the group launched a campaign to force a Texit referendum on the 2024 primary ballot.

 

Under a provision in the Texas Election Code, the question “Should the State of Texas reassert its status as an independent nation?” should appear on the ballot if the group acquired more than 97,709 signatures. The movement secured 139,456 signatures, according to the Daily Mail.

H.R. 2 is a House-passed border security package that some Republicans have sought to pair with the Biden administration's request for more than $100 billion to support U.S. allies abroad.

 

Johnson, for his part, has remained adamant that he seeks to cut spending and secure the border.

 

"We want to get the border closed and secured, first, and we want to make sure that we reduce non-defense discretionary spending," Johnson said earlier this month. "The point is the longer we wait, the longer we delay the closure and security of the border, the greater the crisis and the problem."

Ron DeSantis faced a sharp, surprising rebuke from a conservative appeals court on Wednesday, which dealt him a major setback in his quest to banish state prosecutor Andrew Warren from office. In fact, “setback” may be too mild a term: DeSantis got smoked at the court, which effectively accused him of abusing his office to punish Warren on the basis of protected speech. Most surprisingly, the governor’s harshest critic was Judge Kevin Newsom, a staunchly conservative Donald Trump appointee who went out of his way to charge DeSantis with an unconstitutional assault on “representative democracy.”

 

DeSantis, a Republican, suspended Warren, a twice-elected Democrat serving as state attorney near Tampa, from office in August 2022. Florida’s constitution permits the governor to suspend elected prosecutors only for specific reasons, like “neglect of duty” or “malfeasance.” So DeSantis issued an executive order claiming that he had dismissed the prosecutor for refusing to enforce criminal laws, including Florida’s bans on abortion and transgender health care. Warren responded with a federal lawsuit alleging that DeSantis had, in reality, targeted him because he had criticized the state bans, violating his First Amendment right to speak on a matter of public concern. At the time, the right-wing press panned his suit; National Review’s Dan McLaughlin, for instance, condemned it as “bogus,” “a joke” that “no responsible jurist” could support.

 

U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle, a Bill Clinton appointee, largely sided with Warren on the facts: The judge found that DeSantis directed his aides to find a “reform” prosecutor for him to suspend as a political statement; that those aides decided Warren would be a high-profile target based on his outspoken opposition to DeSantis’ agenda; and that they then crafted a pretext to justify Warren’s ouster. (Independent reporting later confirmed this account.) Hinkle acknowledged that DeSantis retaliated against Warren for his protected speech, a violation of the First Amendment. But he found that DeSantis had developed sufficient pretext to suspend the prosecutor anyway by zeroing in on his alleged refusal to enforce abortion restrictions.

 

It didn’t matter, Hinkle held, that Warren had denounced other laws trumpeted by DeSantis, including restrictions on transgender health care, voting rights, and free assembly—or that the evidence showed that these denunciations formed the real basis of the governor’s action. Because the governor had covered his tracks with pretext, Warren had no recourse.

 

Warren then took his case to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, where he seemed to have slim odds of success. The 11th Circuit, now stacked with Trump appointees, has approved several of the Republican policies that Warren lambasted. The prosecutor’s appeal landed before Newsom, the Trump appointee, along with Judge Anne C. Conway (a George H.W. Bush appointee) and Judge Jill Pryor (a Barack Obama appointee). After losing before the liberal Judge Hinkle, Warren appeared unlikely to prevail before a panel with a majority of Republican appointees. Would the court agree with National Review that his lawsuit was a joke?

Perhaps the most notable aspect of this decision is that Newsom, a Federalist Society favorite, signed it in full, and wrote a concurrence that was even more cutting toward DeSantis. He began by pointing out that DeSantis boasted during a recent primary debate that he had “beat[en] George Soros” by removing the “radical” Warren, a not-so-subtle indication that the governor’s real beef lay with the prosecutor’s political affiliations and expression. The judge then quoted the Supreme Court’s admonition that “the role that elected officials play in our society makes it all the more imperative that they be allowed freely to express themselves on matters of current public importance.”

 

“Warren wasn’t just an elected official,” Newsom wrote, “he was also a once and likely future candidate for office.” And there is “practically universal agreement” that the First Amendment’s “major purpose” was “to protect the free discussion of governmental affairs,” including “discussions of candidates.” Wielding the power of government to censor a political rival cuts “to the core of our representative democracy.” It runs afoul of the principle that elected officials have a sweeping right “to express their views on salient political issues.” And “whatever one thinks of Warren’s particular views about abortion, he is no less entitled to that protection.”

 

In Newsom’s telling—the correct one, according to undisputed evidence in the record—DeSantis abused his office in a manner most repugnant to the Constitution. He overrode the preferences of Warren’s constituents on the basis of his own desire to squelch the rise of a political rival from the opposing party. His hostility toward Warren lay in the prosecutor’s free expression of ideas that the governor disliked. By ousting him, DeSantis punished an elected official for participating in free and open debate, undermining one of the Constitution’s most fundamental guarantees of democratic self-governance.

 

Although the bulk of Newsom’s votes will continue to disappoint progressives, it’s encouraging to see a conservative judge try to apply real law rather than audition for the Supreme Court by pushing radical and trollish right-wing views. In truth, Newsom probably blew his chances on a promotion when he sided with social media companies in their fight against Florida laws forbidding content moderation. (His well-reasoned opinion is now under review at the Supreme Court, which will probably affirm.) The judge’s repeated departures from the conservative legal movement’s dogma likely render him insufficiently extreme to be a SCOTUS contender under the next Republican president. The Supreme Court tackles taxation

 

Moore v. U.S. will decide if the federal government can tax unrealized capital gains not yet received under the 16th Amendment. The justices agreed to hear the Moores’ appeal as the couple wanted their $14,729 refund that the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against. The Ninth Circuit, known in legal circles as the “Ninth Circus” has the worst record of any appeals court before the Supreme Court.

 

Like Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization did last year, this case will have a huge and lasting ripple effect that should concern everyone.

 

It is no secret that the nation is accruing debt that is unsustainable. The day of reckoning approaches.

 

Over a century of income tax laws has resulted in thousands of pages of decrees that carve out craters of exemptions in a labyrinth of directives. The tax code is a bloated, crony-orchestrated, lobbyist-measured disaster for those unable to manipulate it by hiring all those cunning accountants and attorneys who are paid handsomely to circumvent it.

 

When was the last time a member of Congress did their own taxes?

 

A fundamental reckoning from the ground up is long overdue to bury the income tax along with the IRS and replace them with a consumption tax or flat tax.

 

To tax unrealized capital gains not yet received is extreme. The power to regulate and tax is the power to destroy. Congress’s authority to tax does not include reinvested capital and personal property as income.

 

Income is money received. Assets may increase in value, but until they are collected as interest or dividends, or sold, there is no income. If you cannot spend it, it is not income.

 

You can’t pay the rent or fill your gas tank with paper gains or the appreciation of your home. When you gain on any financial instrument but do not sell you earn a “paper profit.” If unrealized gains are taxed, and the taxpayer has no cash to pay, a forced liquidation would be necessary for payment.

 

Are you prepared to pay a tax because your assets go up in value? House, car, pets, trading cards, comic books, Auntie Estelle’s antique coffee table – where does it end? Provided market values decline would monies be refunded? Stop laughing, that was no joke.

 

Uncle Sam wants all the golden eggs without having to buy the hens, the henhouse, and the chickenfeed. The power brokers in Washington believe everything is subject to taxation, real or imagined.

 

It is pitiful that this case is even necessary.

Democrats Propose Bill to Neuter Militias

The “Preventing Private Paramilitary Activity Act” would effectively limit most militia activity.

 

Militias who like to spend their weekends training to overthrow the government could find themselves running afoul of federal law, under new legislation being proposed in the House and Senate Thursday that seeks to curtail paramilitary activity.

 

The “Preventing Private Paramilitary Activity Act” is being introduced by Senator Ed Markey from Massachusetts, and Congressman Jamie Raskin of Maryland, both Democrats.

 

The legislation would prohibit publicly patrolling, drilling or engaging in harmful or deadly paramilitary activities, interfering with or interrupting government proceedings, interfering with someone else exercising their constitutional rights, falsely assuming the role of law enforcement, and “training to engage in such behavior.”

 

The lawmakers propose different tiers of criminal penalties, depending on whether violations result in injury or property damage. The bill would establish harsher penalties for repeat offenders, and probationary sentences for first-time offenders. It would also create paths for the DOJ and private individuals to seek civil federal lawsuits against paramilitary activity.

 

This legislation comes almost exactly three years after Jan. 6, 2021, when thousands of Trump supporters—many dressed for war—stormed the U.S. Capitol over conspiracy theories about the presidential election results. Leading the charge were members and leaders of the Oath Keepers, a militia, and Proud Boys, a quasi-paramilitary group often described as a far-right street-fighting gang. Top brass of those organizations have since caught seditious conspiracy charges.

The natural gas distribution company says its system was not involved in Monday's Fort Worth hotel explosion.

 

 

FORT WORTH, Texas — Atmos Energy has said that after completing safety checks and an investigation, the natural gas distribution company has reportedly found no indication that its system was involved in this week's Fort Worth hotel explosion.

 

As of Friday, officials are saying that 21 people were injured from the explosion at the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Downtown Hotel that happened on Monday afternoon.

 

There have been no confirmed fatalities, according to officials. It is still unknown exactly what caused the explosion or how it was started. Fort Worth Fire Chief Jim Davis said that there was no purposeful intent to cause harm behind the explosion. There was a gas element, but Davis said it's unclear whether the gas or explosion came first.

 

"We appreciate the partnership with the Fort Worth Fire and Police Departments and all officials participating in the response and will continue to assist their investigation," Atmos Energy said in a released statement Friday.

 

 

Fire department spokesman Craig Trojacek said officials were investigating to confirm if there was a gas leak, as a strong smell of gas was reported downtown. But it was unclear if the smell was caused by the explosion itself or if it caused the explosion.

 

Trojacek also said there were reports the explosion started in the restaurant of the hotel, Musume, and that there was some construction being done at the restaurant, but officials were not 100% sure where the explosion started.

 

On Tuesday, a FEMA engineer was sent to inspect the building. During the inspection, the agency sent their cadaver dogs inside and around the building to search for any victims that could have been trapped in the rubble.

 

"Search and rescue operations occurred through the night and continued this morning with specifically trained canines. At this time, no additional victims have been located," the City of Fort Worth said in a statement to WFAA.

 

No one has been reported missing.

 

Some attorneys told WFAA Thursday that they expect that the explosion will prompt lawsuits as at least one firm is advertising to potential Fort Worth plaintiffs using targeted social media posts.

 

"Everybody has a right to be safe," Zehl and Associates named partner Ryan Zehl told WFAA Thursday. "Everybody has a right to avoid negligence, and everybody has a right to stay clear of someone else breaking rules, procedures, or laws that could cause injury."

 

Several investigating agencies are still trying to determine what caused the explosion.

So I have people that are constantly taking over my feed on my phone doing DEI. They do things like this all the time it seems like and they must be apart of the government.

I am only saying this because people should be careful is all. I tried to make police reports or do things to try to get people to see what is going on but it almost seems as if they know and are in on it.

 

It is hard to gather information evidence on things like this…

My tires have had issues on 3 occasions… I documented it with the police. People have pulled fire alarms in my building and around my building. I have people that even where I live some time in the building doing odd things… as well as our side mostly on the street. I have had plastic bag full of forks, knives, and spoons thrown at my car on the freeway. I have had people try to run me off the road or seemingly pushing me into the side of guard rails. I had people spit on my car and place of work. Pee on my building to…

 

It does not seem like everyone is bad some people seem to be good. I however believe these people pray on the fact they seem to know where you are on cameras and phone gps… my auto correct changes things like “for” to “die” or “sue.” Other crazy language seems to be common for it also edit.

 

The hardest thing is that they seem to fallow you on YouTube, or 8kun and then meme exactly what they are having other people are doing. A lot of times they will have loud cars drive by pill out and so on…

 

This has been going on for years in my life. I would normally not think as much about this place but just because I check some news here now and then it seems like people have targeted me from the site.

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

The 2,500-page landmark report was released Tuesday after more than two years of investigations by an independent commission, in France's first major reckoning with the devastating phenomenon.

 

A victim named 'Marie' testified that she was abused as an 11-year-old and that when she complained about the abuse to her parents they refused to believe a nun could do such a thing. The abuse continued for another year.

'I was truly [a gift] for this nun… because she knew full well that she did not risk anything,' Marie said.

 

Eighty per cent of victims were young boys between the ages of 10 and 13, however many girls also suffered abuse, not only by priests but also by nuns.

Pope Francis today expressed to the victims his 'great sorrow, for their wounds', adding that he was grateful for the courage they had shown in denouncing what they had been through.

 

The investigation found that an estimated 330,000 children were victims of sex abuse within France's Catholic Church between 1950 to 2020, with an estimated 216,000 people abused by priests and other clerics.

'We can see how systemic it was … with an estimated number of 216,000 victims,' Savignac told Reuters, adding that the Church could not have ignored something of that magnitude.

'It's an earthquake, a hurricane, a tsunami … when you see these numbers, it's so damning that no one can stay in denial, whether the Catholic Church or society as a whole,' he added.

A statement from the Vatican said: 'First of all [the Pope's] thoughts go to the victims, with great sorrow, for their wounds.'

 

The commission that compiled the report urged compensation for victims and strong action from the church, denouncing 'faults' and 'silence'.

The president of the commission that issued the report, Jean-Marc Sauvé, said the estimate, based on scientific research, includes abuses committed by priests and others clerics as well as by non-religious people involved in the church.

The report says an estimated 3,000 'criminal paedophiles' - two-thirds of them priests - have preyed on hundreds of thousands of mainly young boys who were at Catholic schools and other institutions.

The independent inquiry covered alleged sex abuse of minors by French Catholic priests, deacons and other clergy since 1950, and found the abuse was a 'massive phenomenon' that was covered up for decades by a 'veil of silence.'

The 2,500-page document comes as the Catholic Church in France, like in other countries, seeks to face up to shameful secrets that were long covered up and follows widespread outrage over a string of paedophilia claims and prosecutions against Church officials worldwide.

 

Véronique Margron, President of the Conference of Religious People of France and a nun, spoke of 'crimes against humanity'.

'Can we deal with this disaster?' asked Sister Margron, who said sexual abuse in the Church amounted to 'crimes against humanity'.

She added: 'How do we overcome this? I do not know. We have not even finished reviewing everything.

 

The commission issued 45 recommendations about how to prevent abuse. These included training priests and other clerics, revising Canon Law - the legal code the Vatican uses to govern the church - and fostering policies to recognize and compensate victims, Sauvé said.

The report comes after a scandal surrounding now-defrocked priest Bernard Preynat rocked the French Catholic Church. Last year, Preynat was convicted of sexually abusing minors and given a five-year prison sentence. He acknowledged abusing more than 75 boys for decades.

The church must not only acknowledge events but also compensate victims, Devaux said. 'It is indispensable that the church redresses the harm caused by all these crimes, and (financial) compensation is the first step.'

The Preynat case led to the resignation last year of the former archbishop of Lyon, Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, who has been accused of failing to report the abuses to civil authorities when he learned about them in the 2010s. France´s highest court ruled earlier this year that Barbarin did not cover up the case.

 

French archbishops, in a message to parishioners read during Sunday Mass across the country, said the publication of the report is 'a test of truth and a tough and serious moment.'

'We will receive and study these conclusions to adapt our actions,' the message said. 'The fight against pedophilia concerns all of us … Our support and our prayers will keep going toward all the people who have been abused within the church.'

 

Pope Francis issued in May 2019 a groundbreaking new church law requiring all Catholic priests and nuns around the world to report clergy sexual abuse and cover-ups by their superiors to church authorities.

In June, Francis swiftly rejected an offer from Cardinal Reinhard Marx, one of Germany's most prominent clerics and a close papal adviser, to resign as archbishop of Munich and Freising over the church´s mishandling of abuse cases.

But he said a process of reform was necessary and every bishop must take responsibility for the 'catastrophe' of the crisis.

Catholic nuns running a children's home in Germany pimped out boys to priests, politicians and businessmen who would rape the children at sex parties, according to a victim who has won a compensation battle.

Darmstaft Social Welfare Court awarded the man, now 63, compensation after he detailed how nuns dragged him to be abused by priests and powerful men at parties, starting at age five. They paid the women for doing so.

 

The victim, who remains anonymous, said he was raped around 1,000 times during his time at the home in the 1960s and 70s, alongside other boys.

The court ruled on the case in May but the latest abuse scandal for the Catholic church only came to light this month after a senior clergyman spoke publicly.

The Bishop of Speyer, Karl-Heinz Wiesemann publicly named former official of the diocese Rudolf Motzenbäcker, who died in 1998, as being allegedly involved in the abuse. The bishop said three further victims have since come forward.

 

The abuse victim was just five when he joined the home run by the Order of the Sisters of the Divine Saviour in the German city of Speyer in March 1963.

 

The victim said he was 'literally dragged' by the nuns to Motzenbäcker's apartment to be sexually abused, reports Der Spiegel. They would beat him when he resisted.

The man, who was an alter boy at the Speyer Cathedral, said he was assigned the priest as a confessor.

 

The victim said visitors to the children's home would abuse him at 'sex parties'.

It was here that he said the nuns would pass youngsters aged between seven and 14 to clergymen, local politicians and businessmen.

'The nuns were pimps,' he said. If they disobeyed they would be beaten with sticks or have their heads smashed against the wall.

SHOCKING REPORT Nuns used crucifixes to rape girls during decades of abuse by French clergy, with 330,000 victims covered upOct 5 2021

Victims of abuse within France's Catholic Church welcomed a new report which estimated that hundreds of thousands of kids were sexually abused over the past 70 years.

The figure includes abuses committed by some 3,000 priests and an unknown number of other people involved in the church.

The report found that nuns used crucifixes to rape girls or force boys to have sex with them.

The wrongdoing was covered up by Catholic authorities covered up over decades, according to the president of the commission that issued the report, Jean-Marc Sauvé.

 

Victims welcomed the report as long overdue and the head of the French bishops' conference asked for their forgiveness.

The report said the tally of 330,000 victims includes an estimated 216,000 people abused by priests and other clerics, and the rest by church figures such as scout leaders or camp counselors.

The estimates are based on a broader research by France's National Institute of Health and Medical Research into sexual abuse of children in the country.

The study's authors estimate 80 per cent of the church's victims were boys.

The independent commission urged the church to take strong action. It also called on the Catholic Church to help compensate the victims, notably in cases that are too old to prosecute via French courts.

"We consider the church has a debt towards victims," Sauvé said.

 

Pope Francis expressed his "great sorrow" to the victims "for their wounds" today.

 

Two of those victims, Martine, 73, and Mireille, 71, were sexually assaulted by a priest when they were teenage girls in high school.

"It brings on such terrible thoughts," Martine said. "For me, personally, I had to wait for my parents to die because otherwise she said it was not possible to speak out."

"I think that each victim experienced it as if they were the only one (victim), and thats part of this phenomenon involving control and secrecy," Mireille said.

"We are in a condition of submission… in a mental captivity. So, we follow this person who suddenly takes power over us… We are caught in a spider web."

 

The commission worked for two-and-a-half years, listening to victims and witnesses and studying church, court, police and news archives starting from the 1950s.

Sauvé said: "Sometimes church officials did not denounce (the sex abuses) and even exposed children to risks by putting them in contact with predators."

 

The president of the Conference of Bishops of France, Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, said French bishops are appalled at the conclusions of the report.

"I wish on that day to ask for pardon, pardon to each of you," he told the victims.

"No one expected such a high number (of victims) to come out of the survey and that is properly frightening and out of proportion with the perception that we've had on the ground."

A victim testified that he was abused more than 1,000 times by clergy after nuns dragged him to the home of predators, Deutsche Welle reported.

The victim alleged some of the nuns received money for acting like "pimps," Der Spiegel reported.

 

German nuns in the city of Speyer received money for luring children to predatory priests who sexually abused them, local media reported from recently released court documents.

One victim, Karl Haucke, filed a court case seeking compensation from the Catholic church and alleging more than 1,000 instances of abuse over the 10 years he lived at a now-shuttered children's home, Deutsche Welle reported.

The case was decided in May, but the documents were only recently released. Haucke was awarded $18,000 for his suffering, the outlet reported.

The Bishop of Speyer has identified the primary abuser as a vicar named Rudolf Motzenbäcker, who is now dead.

The abuse is alleged to have happened in the 1960s and 1970s.

Haucke said he was "literally dragged" by nuns to Motzenbäcker's home where he was abused, Der Spiegel reported.

If he resisted, Haucke alleged, he would be beaten.

Haucke also testified that influential visitors to the children's home would abuse him and other children as young as 7 at "sex parties."

He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism.
