Al Jazeera journalist beaten, arrested by Israeli forces from Gaza hospital

 

Media watchdogs decry Ismail al-Ghoul’s arrest and demand his immediate release after he is taken from al-Shifa Hospital.

 

Israeli forces have arrested and severely beaten Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Ismail al-Ghoul in Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital.

 

Al-Ghoul was there early on Monday with his crew and other reporters to cover the Israeli army’s fourth raid into the hospital, where thousands of civilians are trapped, including medical staff, patients and displaced families.

 

Witnesses said the Al Jazeera reporter was dragged away by Israeli forces, who also destroyed the broadcasting vehicles of news crews at the medical facility. The hospital, the largest in the Gaza Strip, has served as a base for journalists to report on Israel’s more than five-month war on the Palestinian enclave.

 

Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Rafah, said al-Ghoul has been “tortured, beaten and detained by the Israeli military along with his crew member on the ground”.

 

Mahmoud, quoting witnesses, said many Palestinians were beaten and verbally abused, some blindfolded and their hands tied behind their backs. They were then put inside an Israeli military truck and taken to an unknown location, he said.

 

Gaza’s Ministry of Health said Israeli forces launched missiles and opened fire on one of the hospital’s buildings, killing and injuring Palestinians, and a section of the hospital’s courtyard was bulldozed.

 

According to Mahmoud, Israeli forces also arrested more than 80 other Palestinians, including “women medical staff and [other] journalists”.

US Considering Giving Israel More Military Aid as Leverage

 

An Israeli official complained that US weapons shipments have been slow

 

Recent media reports have said there are discussions within the Biden administration to condition military aid to Israel if it invades Rafah as a way to reduce civilian casualties. The assumption was that the US could threaten to cut off or reduce its weapons supply to Israel, but according to a report from ABC News, the US might do the opposite.

 

The report cited US officials who said the US hasn’t made a decision on leveraging military aid and that “it’s possible additional aid — not less — would be offered as an incentive” to reduce civilian casualties.

 

The US officials made the comments in response to a senior Israeli official complaining that US weapons shipments weren’t coming fast enough. The official said that in the wake of October 7, US arms “were coming very fast,” but “we are now finding that it’s very slow.”

 

US officials denied there was any intentional slowdown in weapons shipments to Israel. When asked about the Israeli claim, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US was continuing to supply Israel with arms.

 

“I’m not gonna get into the timeline for every individual system that’s being provided,” Kirby said. “We continue to support Israel with their self-defense needs. That’s not going to change, and we have been very, very direct about that.”

 

The US provides Israel with $3.8 billion in annual military aid, and the Biden administration has approved over 100 arms deals since October 7 to support the mass slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. The US is looking to give Israel another $14 billion as part of a $95 billion foreign military aid bill that’s passed through the Senate but has yet to be voted on in the House.

 

Gaza’s Health Ministry said Sunday that the death toll in Gaza since Israel unleashed its onslaught stands at 31,645 Palestinians. About 70% of the casualties are women and children. The Health Ministry’s numbers are considered a low estimate since they don’t account for the thousands who are missing and presumed to be dead under the rubble.

Biden White House Is Funding Palestinian Security Forces

The Palestinian Security Forces (PASF) were founded by the US, UN, and Russia in 1993. They have been funded and trained by the US on and off ever since. Now, the Biden White House wants to boost the PASF through the U.S. State Department. Allegedly, this will contribute to regional stability, as the PASF could coordinate with the Israel Defense Force (IDF). Furthermore, there is some discussion of deploying the PASF into Gaza to maintain order.

 

Providing weapons, money, and training to the same authority that birthed Hamas and the PLO—what could possibly go wrong?

 

The Palestinian Security Forces (PASF), also known as the Palestinian National Security Forces (PNSF), began following the establishment of the Palestinian Authority (PA) through the Oslo Accords in 1993. The PASF was originally formed from the bodyguards and security personnel of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Under Yasser Arafat, the PASF grew into a larger, more formidable force.

 

After the death of Arafat in 2004, plans were made to rebuild the PASF. The following year, with support from the US, EU, UN, and Russia, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced the creation of the office of the United States Security Coordinator (USSC) for Israel and the Palestinian Authority. The goal was to remake the PASF as a multi-branch force as part of President George W. Bush’s Road Map to Peace.

 

The PASF consists of four branches: the Presidential Guard (PG), tasked with safeguarding the Palestinian president; the National Security Force (NSF), which ensures area security and aids the Palestinian Civil Police; the Palestinian Civil Police (PCP); and the Civil Defense (CD) directorate, responsible for basic firefighting and emergency response across the West Bank. All of the forces were largely trained by the Americans, with the PG being the only one extensively trained by the USSC.

 

After Hamas won the 2006 elections in Gaza, continued U.S. funding and training of the troops became more problematic. The situation became even more unstable in 2007 when tensions between Hamas and Fatah, another major Palestinian political party, escalated into violence, leading to a series of clashes between Hamas and Fatah forces in the Gaza Strip. Hamas emerged victorious in these clashes, effectively taking control of the Gaza Strip and ousting Fatah forces loyal to the Palestinian Authority led by President Mahmoud Abbas. This event is commonly referred to as the “Hamas takeover of Gaza” or the “Gaza coup.” It led to a split in Palestinian governance, with Hamas controlling the Gaza Strip while Fatah maintained control over the West Bank.

 

The Hamas/PLO split makes it very difficult for Gaza and the West Bank to work together, raising questions about how the US would train the security forces of both entities and who those entities would obey. Currently, the PASF exists and has troops in the West Bank, but they are being driven out of some towns by armed groups, and they have not received their salary in months, although the US regularly sends aid money.

 

One could easily ask why the White House is even trying. Hamas and the PLO have both been dubbed terrorist organizations. Under international law and US law, it is illegal to provide funding, training, and weapons to terrorists.

 

Not surprisingly, Israeli intelligence discovered that Palestinian Authority security personnel have been involved in terror attacks. According to a report from the Israeli NGO Regavim, 46 members of the Palestinian Authority Security Forces (PASF) lost their lives while engaging in terrorist activities aimed at or attempting to target numerous innocent Israelis. Additionally, 25 individuals were apprehended, and at least seven were injured. These findings suggest systematic wrongdoing within the PA’s ranks. The report goes on to allege that not only does the Palestinian Authority fail to condemn terrorism perpetrated by security force members, but it also celebrates them and provides financial assistance to the terrorists and their families.

Senate Finance Committee chair faces call to resign over wife's major stock holdings

Republicans are demanding Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden step down from his position as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee over his wife's major stock holdings.

 

"We are alarmed by reports of your wife's exceptionally large stock holdings, totaling $3 million, in four of the Big Five technology companies that you are tasked with overseeing – Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google," a group of national Republicans, led by New York Young Republican Club President Gavin Wax, wrote to Wyden in a letter obtained by Just the News on Thursday.

 

Wyden's latest financial disclosure covers 2022, and it shows that his wife, Nancy Wyden, owns at least $1.5 million in the four major companies, but may have as much as $3 million in investments. She also made between $15,001 and $50,000 in dividends from Apple that year.

 

Notably, Nancy Wyden may still have some involvement in all members of the Big Five. The financial disclosure shows she sold Meta holdings worth between $50,001 and $100,000, and it currently lists her holdings in the company as "None (or less than $1,001)."

 

The Senate Finance Committee has wide-ranging jurisdiction over numerous federal matters ranging from trade to taxation, and the Republicans pointed out how his wife's investments may pose a conflict of interest.

 

"As Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, you help determine whether these companies can continue their dangerous and socially destructive behavior, or whether they will be reined in. And Mrs. Wyden's investments – and therefore your own financial ties to these companies via your wife – bring your commitment to the task into question," they wrote.

 

"Conflicts of interest like this would pose ethical problems for any policymaker. But yours is especially problematic, given that you personally wield enormous power over the economic fate of the very same companies these investments support."

 

Nancy Wyden also has investments in tech companies outside of the Big Five. For example, she owns between $500,001 and $1 million in stock in NVIDIA, a global tech company.

 

In addition to Wax, the letter's signatories also include College Republicans of America President William Donahue, Republicans for National Renewal Executive Director Mark Ivanyo, National Constitutional Law Union Chairman John Pierce, Students for Trump Chairman Ryan Fournier and Italian American Civil Rights League President Paul Ingrassia.

 

Wyden's office did not immediately respond to Just the News' request for comment, but a spokesman previously told The New York Times: "Mr. Wyden and his wife keep separate finances." The filing deadline for Wyden's 2023 financial report is May 15.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama called in at the British Prime Minister’s official residence on Monday, but the office is keeping tight-lipped about the purpose of the one-hour meeting.

 

Barack Obama surprised when he turned up at Rishi Sunak’s front door on Monday, going inside the historic Downing Street residence for an hour and meeting with the Prime Minister. Former President Obama walked up to the famous black door alone but later emerged alongside the U.S. Ambassador to London Jane Hartley.

 

While Obama and Sunak clearly had enough to be talking about, the reason for the visit and what was discussed was not immediately disclosed, the mystery talk being described by an official to British government-adjacent newspaper The Daily Telegraph as “informal” and private. The Times notes shortly before Obama entered Downing Street, the British finance minister also arrived at the Prime Minister’s official office and residence by the front door. That arrival may be seen as a pointed statement given it is thought to be possible to get to the Prime Minister’s office from the Chancellor’s through internal passageways without going onto the street to be seen by the press.

 

Barack Obama’s visits to Downing Street may not have the happiest associations for some: his meetings there in 2016 ended in him telling the British people not to vote for Brexit, and if they did the country would go “to the back of the queue” for a trade deal with the U.S., which was seen as a potential benefit of leaving the European Union. This hectoring position, of telling sovereign people how to vote was not perceived to have been well received at the time, and the UK subsequently voted against Obama’s wishes.

 

While President Obama was out of the White House shortly after, the threat was made actual by eventual successor Joe Biden, who has stalled on trade with the UK since, leaving the country seeking deals with individual states instead.

US Deportation Port in Gaza

 

The US “port” in Gaza is not for getting things IN to Gaza.

 

It’s about getting Palestinians OUT.

And the US says, “oh, you’re right, instead of air-delivery, let’s do the same more effectively and cheaply, by sea”. So, now the Gaza “port” is being built by the US – and the whole world is duped into believing that the US Gaza port is to help Palestinians stay and survive in Gaza. It is anything but.

 

Extremely well timed together with Israel, Israel now steps attacks on Gaza and Rafah up again, incidentally at exactly the same time as the US has completed the “port” to Gaza.

 

Hunger, death, starvation, and endless pain will not descend upon the Gazans – made by Israel, designed with the USA – and no matter what Gazans said about not leaving Gaza, they will soon – very soon – be BEGGING to be let into the US Gaza port and sailed to ANYWHERE in the world where they will not be killed and starved. And with a US controlled Gaza “port”, Egypt will be seen as part of the plot by US-Israel, because Palestinians in this upcoming Nakba will not exodus Gaza through Egypt, but through the sea.

 

It is undeniable that US-Israel have already planned what countries will take the 2.2 million Palestinians to leave Gaza now. The 2+ million Palestinians soon to be forced out of Gaza will not go to Egypt, not to Jordan or to Saudi Arabia – but to anywhere else on the planet. The EU will take perhaps a million – Germany alone took 1 million Syrian refugees, so the EU as a whole can easily take 1 million Palestinians from Gaza just to please the Americans an keep relations and favors with Israel. Another million Palestinians from Gaza can go to Lebanon, Morocco, to Africa south of Sahara, to South Asia, to East Asia, and so on. Lots of countries will get billions from the US, if they will take one hundred thousand Palestinians. Times 10 countries taking one hundred thousand Palestinian refugees, and it sums up to them taking a million Palestinians.

 

Thus, 2 million Palestinians go via US “Gaza port” to the whole world.

WASHINGTON, March 16 (Reuters) – SpaceX is building a network of hundreds of spy satellites under a classified contract with a U.S. intelligence agency, five sources familiar with the program said, demonstrating deepening ties between billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s space company and national security agencies.

The network is being built by SpaceX’s Starshield business unit under a $1.8 billion contract signed in 2021 with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), an intelligence agency that manages spy satellites, the sources said.

The plans show the extent of SpaceX’s involvement in U.S. intelligence and military projects and illustrate a deeper Pentagon investment into vast, low-Earth orbiting satellite systems aimed at supporting ground forces.

If successful, the sources said the program would significantly advance the ability of the U.S. government and military to quickly spot potential targets almost anywhere on the globe.

The contract signals growing trust by the intelligence establishment of a company whose owner has clashed with the Biden administration and sparked controversy over the use of Starlink satellite connectivity in the Ukraine war, the sources said.

The Wall Street Journal reported in February the existence of a $1.8 billion classified Starshield contract with an unknown intelligence agency without detailing the purposes of the program.

Reuters reporting discloses for the first time that the SpaceX contract is for a powerful new spy system with hundreds of satellites bearing Earth-imaging capabilities that can operate as a swarm in low orbits, and that the spy agency that Musk’s company is working with is the NRO.

Knowing that for a period of about ten years beginning in 2012, USG/DHS essentially operated inside the platform of Twitter for the purposes of controlling public opinion, I find it very challenging to believe the relationships with DHS, FBI, HHS and USIC – along with the Pentagon and State Dept, just ended after Musk purchased the platform.

 

One could make a compelling argument the purchase of Twitter held an ancillary benefit and protected the USIC from revelations that would not be controlled by any other process. US Senator Slams Israeli Claims About UNRWA as ‘Flat-Out Lies’

 

A Democratic Senator blasted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other leaders in Tel Aviv for making false accusations about aid agencies operating in Gaza. Tel Aviv has charged the UN aid agency for Palestinians (UNRWA) with acting as a proxy of Hamas.

 

Sen. Chris Van Hollen said, on “Face the Nation,” that Netnayhu’s accusations against UNRWA were an attempt to eliminate the aid agency. “There’s no doubt that the claim that Prime Minister Netanyahu and others are making, that somehow UNRWA is a proxy for Hamas, are just flat-out lies,” he explained. “That’s a flat-out lie. If you look at the person who’s in charge of operations on the ground in Gaza for UNRWA, it’s about a 20-year US Army veteran. You can be sure he is not in cahoots with Hamas. Netanyahu has wanted to get rid of UNRWA since at least 2017.”

 

In January, Tel Aviv claimed it had compiled an intelligence dossier that showed extensive ties between Hamas and the aid agency, including that 12 UNRWA employees participated in the October 7 attack. However, over the past two months, Israel has failed to produce evidence to back the allegations. Additionally, an UNRWA investigation has uncovered evidence that the Israelis used torture to generate false confessions from Palestinians.

 

After Israel made the charges against UNRWA, the US, and 15 other countries, cut funding for the aid agency. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the accusations were “highly, highly credible.”

 

As the Israeli case against UNRWA has started to crumble, three countries – Australia, Sweden, and Canada – have restored their funding for the agency.

 

UNRWA is crucial for providing life-saving aid to Palestinians in Gaza. Still, its workers and buildings have come under frequent attack during Israel’s five-month onslaught. At least 165 UNRWA workers have been killed. Last week, Israel targeted a food distribution center in Rafah, killing five people.

Joe Biden Is Shipping Weapons to Israel Every 36 Hours

 

The Biden administration has been able to maintain a low profile by spreading arms provision to Israel across more than 100 smaller munitions sales — allowing the president to posture as a peacekeeper while US weapons wipe Gaza off the map.

 

In the one hundred fifty days after October 7, Israel killed thirty-one thousand Palestinians, injured seventy-two thousand, displaced 1.7 million, and razed or damaged more than half of Gaza’s buildings. Joe Biden sent over one hundred weapons shipments to Israel during the same stretch. In a recent classified briefing, US officials told members of Congress that the Biden administration approved and delivered more than one hundred separate weapons sales to Israel in the one hundred fifty days after October 7, “amounting to thousands of precision-guided munitions, small diameter bombs, bunker busters, small arms and other lethal aid,” the Washington Post reported on Wednesday. That works out to one new arms deal every thirty-six hours, on average.

 

These transfers are classified as sales, but very few of them meet that definition in the conventional sense. The vast majority are funded through State Department grants. Biden made just two of these publicly funded sales to Israel public, and the only reason he did is because he had to. Section 36 of the Arms Export Control Act (AECA) requires the president to notify Congress when a proposed arms sale exceeds a certain value. The notification threshold depends on the type of matériel (for “significant military equipment” it’s $14 million; for other military articles and services, $50 million; for military construction services, $200 million), but also the recipient. For NATO countries and South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Israel, the notification thresholds for these three categories are considerably higher ($25 million, $100 million, and $300 million, respectively).

 

While Biden is loud and proud about arming Ukraine, he prefers to arm Israel in secret. The quantity of sales since October 7 is case in point. By spreading his military support for Israel across more than one hundred sales, Biden kept pretty much all of them “under threshold” per the AECA, thereby avoiding congressional and public scrutiny. Biden might have picked up this trick from his predecessor. Donald Trump exploited the same loophole to dodge oversight on arms deals with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, whose intense and indiscriminate bombing of Yemen at the time had created a dire humanitarian crisis.

 

Keeping these transfers out of public view makes it easier for Biden to cast himself as Humanitarian of the Year in Gaza while going great lengths to help Israel destroy it. Biden’s series of food airdrops suggests he’s bravely trying to fix a catastrophe beyond his control. Administration officials perpetuate this narrative by insisting the president has no leverage over Israel. “There is a mistaken belief that the United States is able to dictate to other countries’ sovereign decisions,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller recently said.

 

This is wrong. The catastrophe in Gaza is the result of a deliberate policy choice Biden made. Israel’s military offensive would not be possible without him fast-tracking such vast quantities of weapons to its arsenal over the last several months. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has admitted that Israel’s assault on Gaza relies on a steady stream (a torrent, in fact) of US weapons, once telling a group of local government officials, “We need three things from the US: munitions, munitions, and munitions.” From October 7 to mid-February, Biden had delivered twenty-one thousand bombs to Israel, and Israel had already dropped half of them.

 

Netanyahu structured an urgent plea to US lawmakers in November in a similar way: “I need ammo, ammo, and ammo — yesterday,” he said and specifically requested 155 mm artillery shells. More than thirty aid and advocacy groups had urged the Biden administration not to supply this ammunition because the shells are unguided, highly explosive (with a casualty radius of 100 to 300 meters) and have been used by Israel in the past to hit hospitals, schools, shelters, and safe zones. Biden transferred 57,021 of them to Israel a few weeks later. The Israeli army announced in early December that it had fired more than one hundred thousand shells since its ground invasion of Gaza began on October 27, adding that artillery plays a “central role” by providing “intense fire cover” for its troops.

 

Israel lacks the production capacity to prosecute one of the deadliest, most intense bombing campaigns in history relying only on its own munitions. Israel’s assault on Gaza continues because Biden thinks it should continue. If he thought otherwise, he would shut down the weapons pipeline he constructed to enable it.

After the African Sahel nations suddenly and rapidly kicked the French colonial power out, it does appear that the US troops and diplomatic influence may be heading the same way.

 

Spokesman for the Niger military junta, Major Amadou Abdramane, stated clearly, with no margin for interpretation: ‘The American bases and civilian personnel cannot stay on Nigerien soil any longer.’

 

The US was left scrambled on Sunday to assess the future of its counterterrorism operations in the Sahel.

 

The American military has hundreds of troops stationed at a major airbase in northern Niger.

 

The group flies over the Sahel region — south of the Sahara Desert — in search of jihadi groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State.

 

Associated Press reported:

 

“Top U.S. envoy Molly Phee returned to the capital, Niamey, this week to meet with senior government officials, accompanied by Marine Gen. Michael Langley, head of the U.S. military’s African Command. She had previously visited in December, while acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland traveled to the country in August.”

 

According to State Department, talks were frank, but it does not seem that it has any leeway left to negotiate a deal to stay in the country.

 

“Niger had been seen as one of the last nations in the restive region that Western nations could partner with to beat back growing jihadi insurgencies. The U.S. and France had more than 2,500 military personnel in the region until recently, and together with other European countries had invested hundreds of millions of dollars in military assistance and training.”

 

In July, military forces ousted the country’s president and, mere months later, told French forces to leave.

 

“The U.S. military still had some 650 personnel working in Niger in December, according to a White House report to Congress. The Niger base is used for both manned and unmanned surveillance operations. In the Sahel the U.S. also supports ground troops, including accompanying them on missions. However, such accompanied missions have been scaled back since U.S. troops were killed in a joint operation in Niger in 2017.

 

It’s unclear what prompted the junta’s decision to suspend military ties. On Saturday, the junta’s spokesperson, Col. Maj. Amadou Abdramane, said U.S. flights over Niger’s territory in recent weeks were illegal. Meanwhile, Insa Garba Saidou, a local activist who assists Niger’s military rulers with their communications, criticized U.S. efforts to force the junta to pick between strategic partners.”

 

Neighboring Sahel nations Mali and Burkina Faso have turned to Moscow for security support.

 

In Niger, the military also turned to the Russian mercenary group Wagner for help.

 

“Cameron Hudson, who served with the Central Intelligence Agency and State Department in Africa, said the incident shows the diminution of U.S. leverage in the region and that Niger was angered by Washington’s attempt to pressure the junta to steer clear of Russia. ‘This is ironic since one mantra of the Biden Administration has been that Africans are free to choose their partners’, he said.”

 

Major Amadou Abdramane, speaking on state television, said junta leaders met the U.S. delegation only out of courtesy and described their tone as condescending.

President Biden doesn't speak frequently with Barack Obama — but behind closed doors, he talks about him a lot.

 

Why it matters: Biden often measures himself against the man he served as vice president, current and former aides say. It's acomplex relationship in which there is a rivalry — particularly on Biden's side.

"Obama would be jealous," Biden sometimes says when speaking about a perceived accomplishment, according to two Biden aides familiar with such instances.

The competitive dynamic has informed Biden's approach to several issues — including how he's dealt with Afghanistan, Israel and Congress.

Reality check: On a personal level, the Biden-Obama relationship is respectful and even affectionate.

 

Obama often praises Biden publicly and is set to be a key surrogate on the campaign trail this fall to help Biden get re-elected.

Driving the news: Biden's range of feelings about Obama is apparent in the recently released transcript of Biden's interview with special counsel Robert Hur, who investigated Biden's handling of classified documents.

 

Unprompted, Biden told Hur about the wounding experience of Obama favoring Hillary Clinton over him to be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2016.

Biden recalled that "a lot of people … were encouraging me to run in this period, except the president …. He just thought that [Clinton] had a better shot of winning the presidency than I did."

Biden privately has told aides that he believed he could have beaten Donald Trump if he had run in 2016.

Biden speaks more often with former President Bill Clinton than Obama, the Washington Post has reported.

What they're saying: "President Biden does not make such comments in private. As President Biden has said, President Obama is family to him," White House spokesperson Andrew Bates told Axios.

 

Biden "talks to both former President Obama and President Clinton often," Bates added.

A spokesperson for Obama declined to comment.

The intrigue: Many longtime Biden aides have long felt that Obama and his team did not fully appreciate Biden's experience with foreign policy, Congress and grip-and-grin politicking — and were disrespectful.

 

Many strong relationships remain between Biden and Obama worlds, but there is some hostility.

One former Biden aide told Axios: "The Obama people thought Biden would suck as president. They didn't think he'd be organized enough to execute."

Some Biden aides resent the large number of Obama veterans Biden and his top aides decided to bring into the current administration at levels above people who had worked with Biden for much longer.

 

"We do have too many Obama people who don't care about Joe Biden. It's about them," one former White House official told Axios.

Obama himself acknowledged in 2021 the overlap between his team and Biden's, telling The New York Times, "Joe and the administration are essentially finishing the job … 90% of the folks who were there in my administration, they are continuing and building on the policies we talked about."

This has created tension between the two camps ahead of the 2024 election — especially when some Obama-era operatives offer advice.

 

"When people say, 'This is what worked for Obama,' their first response is often, 'We're not Obama,' " one senior Democrat whohas been in touch with the White House said of Biden's team.

But Biden's White House does regularly consult some Obama aides — especially former Obama campaign manager Jim Messina. He's in frequent touch with Biden senior adviser Anita Dunn and campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez…

Zoom in: At times, Biden's competitiveness with Obama has affected how he governs. He's tried to correct for what he sees as the former president's mistakes and shortcomings.

 

Biden was adamant about withdrawing troops from Afghanistan in 2021 — in part because he felt vindicated that Obama should have followed his advice in 2009 to largely withdraw them then.

When talking about lobbying Obama against surging troops to Afghanistan in 2009, Biden told Hur that he was trying to "quite frankly, save his ass."

Biden ordered a withdrawal from Afghanistan in his first months as president. The chaos at the end of that operation — including the killing of 13 U.S. service members — was the lowest moment of Biden's presidency for many in the administration.

Biden White House officials also recall there was a push to "go big" in early 2021 with their first legislative package — the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which included COVID aid and expansions of the social safety net.

 

That was partly because they believed Obama hadn't gotten enough money approved for the $787 billion Recovery Actduring the 2009 financial crisis.

Biden's experience during the Obama administration also has affected how he's dealing with the aftermath of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

 

Biden had a warmer relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu than Obama, and embraced him after the attacks with a trip to Israel. Biden has since become publicly critical of Netanyahu's direction of the war in Gaza, however.

Especially early in his presidency, Biden paid extra attention to cultivating relationships with members of Congress — something he thought Obama should have done more.

 

Biden told Hur that as vice president he often had lawmakers over for breakfast just to get their take on matters — and that he'd push Obama to take a similar approach: "With President Obama, I would always say to him, 'Mr. President, all politics is personal.'"

People close to Biden's White House cheered when Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) told a reporter in early 2021 that Biden was the first president to host him in the Oval Office, even though Tester had been in the Senate all eight years of Obama's presidency.

Some former Obama aides had scoffed at the possibility that Republicans would work with a Democratic president, and Biden took pride in passing big bipartisan legislation on infrastructure and industrial policy.

One former Biden administration official noted that "there's a little bit of 'right back at you' attitude with Biden. You know, picking up the phone and calling senators does work, actually."

Like Obama, Biden had big legislative wins in his first two years with a supportive Congress — but far less success after Republicans took control of the House two years into his term.

The parish church of St Mary Magdalene, Sandringham, has held memorials to many members and relations of the Royal Family from Queen Victoria onwards. It is used regularly as a place of worship by the Royal Family and Estate staff.

 

Sandringham Church is considered to be one of the finest carrstone buildings in existence and dates back in its present form to the 16th-century.
