Pfizer Chemical Spill in Michigan Causes No Contact Advisory of Kalamazoo River

A no-contact advisory was issued for the Kalamazoo River after a chemical spill occurred at Pfizerโ€™s manufacturing plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

According to city health officials, Pfizer released over 1,057 gallons of methylene chloride in its manufacturing facilities processing area, which was then discharged into the Kalamazoo River.

Methylene chloride is a colorless liquid that Pfizer and other pharmaceutical manufacturers use as a solvent in their pharmaceutical medicines.

After the chemical spill occurred, Kalamazoo County Health Officials warned residents not to come into contact with the Kalamazoo River.

Kalamazoo County Health Officer Jim Rutherford stated, โ€œWe decided to issue a no-contact advisory for the stretch of river impacted by the methylene chloride release as a precautionary measure.โ€

โ€œThis advisory will remain in effect until further investigation and sampling indicates that there is no risk to public health,โ€ added Rutherford.

Comet Pons-Brooks' Swirling Coma

 

A bright comet will be visible during next month's total solar eclipse. This very unusual coincidence occurs because Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks's return to the inner Solar System places it by chance only 25 degrees away from the Sun during Earth's April 8 total solar eclipse. Currently the comet is just on the edge of visibility to the unaided eye, best visible with binoculars in the early evening sky toward the constellation of the Fish (Pisces). Comet Pons-Brooks, though, is putting on quite a show for deep camera images even now. The featured image is a composite of three very specific colors, showing the comet's ever-changing ion tail in light blue, its outer coma in green, and highlights some red-glowing gas around the coma in a spiral. The spiral is thought to be caused by gas being expelled by the slowly rotating nucleus of the giant iceberg comet. Although it is always difficult to predict the future brightness of comets, Comet Pons-Brook has been particularly prone to outbursts, making it even more difficult to predict how bright it will actually be as the Moon moves in front of the Sun on April 8.

SBF Planned to โ€˜Come Out As Republicanโ€™ With Tucker Carlson

Days after his crypto empire collapsed in November 2021, Sam Bankman-Fried was already contemplating his comeback by working the media.

One of his top priorities? โ€œGo on Tucker Carlsen, come out as a republican,โ€ SBF wrote in a typo-filled document to himself revealed by federal prosecutors on Friday. The prolific Democratic donor โ€” in fact, the second-largest donor to the Biden 2020 campaign โ€” would say that he was actually on the other team and the whole thing was an act. He would explain that โ€œwhile public contributions show one thing, you see another thing [when] including super pacs,โ€ then โ€œcome out against the woke agenda,โ€ and then โ€œtalk about how the cartel of lawyers is destroying value and throwing entrepreneurs under the bus in order to cover up the incompetence of lawyers.โ€

The document is undated, but it is among filings made by prosecutors to the court less than two weeks before SBF is set to be sentenced on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy. The former crypto king was convicted last year of a scheme to move $9 billion of customer funds from his cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, to prop up his personal hedge fund, Alameda Research. He faces more than a century in prison, though his lawyers are hoping for a maximum of six and a half years and prosecutors are seeking 60 years. (Heโ€™s already been in jail for more than a year for leaking his exโ€™s diary entries.) The document is evidence, prosecutors say, that SBF was a master manipulator, particularly when it comes to using his public image for his personal benefit, and that he should not be spared because of it.

Ever since FTXโ€™s collapse, SBF has been accused of manipulating the media in order to secure his rapid rise. Former employees testified that he exaggerated his own personal image โ€” his wrinkled clothes, his unruly hair, his cheap cars โ€” as a way to gain reportersโ€™ favor and craft a positive story around him and his companies. SBF appears to have written out his grand plan for media manipulation in the kind of explicit detail that comes from a Bond villain prior to his demise. He seems to be weighing who he thinks might assist with spreading his version of events. In one document, SBF had written out a list of people he thinks โ€œmight be helpful,โ€ which includes New Jersey senator Cory Booker and 11 reporters, including those from Bloomberg, the New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. One action item, in a separate document, reads: โ€œWork, on background, with reporters on getting narratives out.โ€

The notes cast a different light on an infamous interview with Vox reporter Kelsey Piper in which SBF lamented โ€œthis dumb game we woke westerners play where we say all the right shibboleths so everyone likes us,โ€ and, in a flash of anger, โ€œfuck regulators.โ€ At the time, it appeared that this was a moment when the crypto billionaire was letting his guard down. (Piper is a fellow traveler in the Effective Altruism movement, and SBF later claimed that he didnโ€™t think he was talking with her in her capacity as a journalist.) In light of his plans to come out as anti-woke on Tucker Carlson, itโ€™s less clear whether this rightward shift โ€” perhaps to a more friendly constituency โ€” was something he was planning long in advance.

While the Feds make their case to incarcerate him for a long time, SBFโ€™s friends and family members have written glowing letters to get him a lighter sentence. Several have noted his philanthropy and his good intentions as reasons why he should be spared an effective life sentence. In one note, his mother, Barbara Friedman, told Judge Lewis Kaplan her son exhibits signs of (but has not been diagnosed as having) autism spectrum disorder and said he has been โ€œwracked with remorse for not having prevented the implosion of FTX and the damage that followed.โ€

I'm seeing major misinformation and fear mongering all across social media and even landing in my email box regarding the upcoming eclipse. So before I go any further, I want everyone to look up the 2017 eclipse and tell me what you see?

 

That's correct. In 2017 they closed many schools, warned citizens to stock up on food, gas, and supplies, and even had the National Guard ready. Why? Because millions of people travel to these towns to see it, so it becomes a zoo. So for those claiming this is all "a first," that is incorrect.

 

Are they preparing for a potential biological warfare threat? Of course that is always a potential, plus they want to stoke fear by letting people know this. The bottom line is that these monsters are capable of anything which makes nearly everything plausible.

 

But, does that mean that you should live in fear, spread fear, and be in a state of constant panic for the rest of your life? Hell no! That is exactly what these monsters are counting onโ€ฆ a perpetual state of fear. Everyone feeding their energy into this "story" is fueling the idea of something bad happening and breathing life into it.

 

So let it go. Release the fear and ride the wave. You cannot live in "what ifs," you can only plan and then let it go and deal with what comes. If you spend the next few weeks focusing your energy into a "might happen" scenario that you ultimately have no control over, that's precious time and energy lost for good.

 

Spend it with your family and loved ones, or building a solid community.

Study Documents Headaches Experienced by Astronauts in Space

Research in the growing field of space medicine has identified many ways in which zero-gravity and other conditions can affect the human body. Now, a new study finds that astronauts are more likely to experience headaches in space than previously known.

 

The study involved 24 astronauts from the U.S., European and Japanese space agencies. They all traveled aboard the International Space Station for up to 26 weeks. All but two of them reported experiencing headaches in space.

 

Headaches struck a larger number of astronauts than the scientists had expected. The headaches continued even after the crew had been in space long enough for the body to adjust. The process takes place in the first two weeks in space.

 

The headaches during the early period often presented similarly to migraines. Those experienced later in space travel presented more like a tension headache, the study found.

 

Neurologist WPJ van Oosterhout of Zaans Medical Center and the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands was lead author of the study. He said the research suggests different processes โ€œare involved for the early headache episodes - the first one to two weeks in space - versus later headache episodes.โ€

 

The study was published this week in the journal Neurology.

 

"In the first week, the body has to adapt to the lack of gravity, known as space adaptation syndrome. This phenomenon is similar to motion sickness, and can cause nausea, vomiting and dizziness, and headaches," Van Oosterhout said. "The later headaches could result from โ€ฆ more fluid accumulating in the upper part of the body and headโ€ฆ.โ€

 

Migraines experienced on Earth are often throbbing, and last four to seven hours, along with symptoms like nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound, Van Oosterhout said. Tension headaches on Earth usually are a dull pain felt over the whole head, he said.

 

The astronauts, 23 men and one woman, had an average age of about 47. They visited the International Space Station for missions that took place from November 2011 to June 2018. A total of 378 headaches were reported by 22 of the 24 astronauts during a total of 3,596 days in orbit. None of the 24 reported headaches in the three months after returning to Earth. None had ever had migraines before their time in space and none had a history of usual headache attacks.

 

Documented effects of space travel include bone and muscle weakening, or atrophy, changes in the brain, cardiovascular system and immune system. Astronauts have also experienced effects on the inner ear and a condition involving the eyes. The risk of cancer from high radiation levels in space is another concern.

 

Experts are unsure how much of a barrier these effects might have on human space travel over long periods, like trips to Mars or beyond.

 

"The honest answer is that we don't know the effects of long-duration space travel - possibly years - on the human body," Van Oosterhout said, adding, this "is a clear task for the field of space medicine."

The Aerospace Corp. and the Space Foundation announced March 18 they are partnering to expand the Space Workforce 2030 program.

 

Aerospace started the Space Workforce 2030 initiative in 2022, forming a coalition of about 30 member companies with the goal of promoting a more diverse and inclusive workforce within the space industry, and to help inspire and prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers.

 

Melanie Stricklan, co-founder and former CEO of Slingshot Aerospace, was tapped as the first executive director of Space Workforce 2030

 

Aerospace CEO Steve Isakowitz said Stricklan will lead several new initiatives such as increase outreach to underrepresented groups, provide educational opportunities like internships, and work with companies to promote inclusive hiring practices.

 

Aerospace is a nonprofit corporation that advises government agencies and operates a federally funded research and development center. The Space Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on education and outreach.

 

Space Workforce 2030 so far has relied on volunteers and administrative support from Aerospace. Given the demand for more activities, โ€œwe realized we needed to partner with an organization that could take us to the next level,โ€ Isakowitz said. โ€œAdding an executive director will allow us to raise money, raise our profile, and take on a lot of the great things that we havenโ€™t been able to take on.โ€

 

The members of the group share workforce data to inform trend analysis about industry demographics and workforce diversity. โ€œWe will continue to collect data,โ€ said Stricklan. โ€œAll the companies will continue to make sure that there is transparency and accountability.โ€

 

Industry faces talent shortages

 

The space industry is at a critical juncture, said Stricklan. Commercial space companies and government agencies face complex demands, and are confronting a shrinking talent pool and fierce competition for those with specialized skills and experience, she said.

 

Part of the challenge is a declining number of students pursuing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) degrees that form the foundation for most space careers. There are also concerns that the industry is failing to attract candidates from diverse backgrounds who may be unaware of the exciting opportunities.

 

Space Workforce 2030 plans to work hand-in-hand with universities, community colleges and high schools to foster interest in space careers, Stricklan said.

 

One of its most successful initiatives is the National Space Intern Program to prepare students for space careers. About 332 interns participated in the first year and more than 4,100 undergraduate and graduate students registered for the 2024 program.

 

Space Foundation CEO Heather Pringle said Space Workforce 2030 is partnering with the White House, NASA, industry and academia to host its first annual National Space Day, a nationwide event with in-person and streaming components designed to inspire the next generation.

A federal judge mandated on Friday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation must hand over all documents concerning Audrey Elizabeth Hale, the perpetrator of the Covenant School shooting, including her manifesto, for a private examination of the materials.

 

This ruling stems from a high-profile lawsuit filed by Star News Digital Media Inc. and Michael Patrick Leahy โ€” CEO and editor in chief of Star News Digital Media โ€” against the FBI in May 2023, seeking the disclosure of Haleโ€™s manifesto.

 

Hale, a 28-year-old woman who identified as a man named Aiden, killed six people โ€” three 9-year-old students and three staff members โ€” at the Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee, on March 27. Hale was shot and killed by law enforcement at the scene of the crime.

 

According to The Tennessee Starโ€™s report, in a filing made in July 2023, the FBI contended that the release of even a single page from Haleโ€™s manifesto could endanger ongoing investigations concerning potential federal offenses.

 

The official ruling deemed Hale acted alone, but officials have refused to release the manifesto, citing the need to protect an ongoing investigation.

 

Trauger wrote in a three-page order, โ€œThe court finds that the FBIโ€™s assertions cannot be evaluated adequately based on the available materials and that, although the FBIโ€™s position may ultimately be well-founded, it has not supported that position with sufficient clarity or detail to permit the court to recognize the asserted exemptions at this time.โ€

 

Trauger continued, โ€œThe court also finds that the significant public interest in both the requested materials and the law enforcement objectives asserted by the FBI support in camera review [private review by a judge to determine what is appropriate to be made public] and that no showing has been made that the requested materials will be so voluminous that they would pose a significant danger to judicial economy.โ€

 

In response to the ruling, Leahy said, โ€œthe courtโ€™s order today is a significant victory for the publicโ€™s right to know about the motives of Audrey Elizabeth Hale, who murdered six innocent Nashvillians at the Covenant School on March 27, 2023.โ€

 

Leahy received an ugly death threat on July 9 in response to his fight for freedom of information.

Conservative pundit and โ€œLouder with Crowderโ€ podcast host Steven Crowder alleged his team had procured three pages of Haleโ€™s purported manifesto and released them on Nov. 4.

 

On a page headlined, โ€œDEATH DAY,โ€ Hale allegedly wrote, โ€œToday is the dayโ€ฆ The day has finally come!โ€ and โ€œI canโ€™t beleive its here. Donโ€™t know how I was able to get this far, but here I am.โ€

 

The manifesto reportedly also included the phrase, โ€œKill those kids!!! those crackers going to fancy private schools,โ€ among other disturbing words about the same school she had attended as a young girl.

 

According to Fox News, Hale kept more than 20 journals, so the three purportedly leaked pages represent only a glimpse of the killerโ€™s writings.

 

Leahy said he was encouraged by the latest development in the case regarding the documents.

 

โ€œI believe the courtโ€™s order for an in camerareview of all the relevant documents is the right course of action, and I am confident that subsequent to that review the court will order the release of all these documents, because it is in the public interest to do so,โ€ he told the Tennessee Star.

Chinaโ€™s government is rolling out a charm offensive to lure back foreigners, part of an effort to shed years of pandemic-induced isolation that is sapping the worldโ€™s second-largest economy.

 

Itโ€™s a tougher sell than it used to be.

 

In recent months, China has made it simpler and cheaper for business travelers and tourists to get visas, and scrapped visa requirements for some entirely. It has extended tax incentives to make life for foreign residents more appealing. Chinese Premier Li Qiang pledged further moves to rebuild the โ€œInvest-in-Chinaโ€ brand at the countryโ€™s annual legislative meetings earlier this month.

 

The campaign marks an effort to restore the global ties that helped power Chinaโ€™s decades of record-breaking growth, which Beijing severed during the pandemic as Chinese leader Xi Jinping elevated security above all else.

 

Now China is trying to regain its allure for foreigners in a different era, with a slowing economy and tightening social controls. A rising chorus in Washington portrays engagement with China as suspect. And there is lingering distrust in the countryโ€™s government stemming from the zero-Covid policies and a nationwide anti-espionage campaign.

 

One U.S. business executive said he was unsettled in mid-2023 when a group of nine police officers showed up at his door in Beijing one evening, demanding to examine his passportand confirm his employer, as one of the officers recorded the interaction with a smartphone. The officers didnโ€™t give a reason for the visit, he said.

 

โ€œItโ€™ll take a long time to restore the broken trust over the last couple of years,โ€ the executive said.

 

China handed out 711,000 residence permits to foreigners last year, down 15% from prepandemic 2019, according to the National Immigration Administration. Short-term visitor numbers, which include business travelers, dropped even more, falling two-thirds over the same period.

Thousands of UFO fanatics flocked to a small city in central France in the hopes of finally meeting extra-terrestrial life.

The event, organised by fringe group Alliances Cรฉlestes, reportedly drew around 2,200 people who each paid between โ‚ฌ150 to โ‚ฌ190 (ยฃ128 to ยฃ162) to attend the three day conference held in Zenith Limoges Metropole building in Limoges, a small city with a population of around 130,000.

Organisers said they wanted to prepare people for the arrival of aliens or 'new-style encounters.'

 

The event's website reads: 'The mission of this citizen delegation is to accompany humanity in this process, in order to properly inform and reduce the fear and stress that this type of encounter can generate.'

Though media was banned from the event, video of the conference was leaked to BFMTV, and showed thousands of people attentively listening to someone speaking on a set on the stage.

The stage was decorated with white furniture, including several seats and what appeared to be a high table on the right.

 

The background of the set was made up of 'futuristic' windows that portrayed stars rushing past the 'alien room' they were in.

The speaker can be heard telling conference attendees: 'We are in contact with civilizations. When I say in contact, it is with communication and a partnership, a collaboration.

'But they have a big problem, these civilizations, which is that they don't know how to communicate with the citizens of Earth.

 

'For what? Because the citizens of Earth are afraid.'

Two French reporters managed to sneak in, and said they saw Alliances Cรฉlestes' director Jean-Michel Raoux dressed in a blue and yellow outfit claiming he was a being from the planet 'Niam.'

Raoux reportedly claims he regularly meets with aliens and that he has the power to bring aliens to different parts of the Earth.

 

The crowd also heard from Anne Givaudan, a 'galactic reporter' who claimed she was from the land of 'Shambhala'. She told the conference's attendees that she has witnesses human-hybrid animals in Antarctica.

'That's why it's time to get up and say to ourselves, what are we doing? Do we trust beings who have always deceived us in all areas? A new world must emerge,' she told a crowd.

But while many in France dismissed the event as a harmless conference, political figures warned that these events draw in conspiracy theorists and extremists.

 

One person invited to the conference was QAnon sympathiser Antoine 'Q' Cuttitta.

The conspiracy theorist regularly posted conspiratorial videos to YouTube before the platform shut his channel down.

According to Conspiracy Watch, Cuttita helped set up the Human Health Alliance International, a group known for its embrace of 'alternative' medicine. It ran a platform that offered to connect patients with debilitating illnesses with 'aromatherapists', 'energeticians', 'magnetizers', 'massotherapists' or even 'naturopaths.'

 

'I was stunned that such an event took place in Limoges,' Thierry Miguel, vice-president of the Haute-Vienne department council tweeted.

'Who are these eccentrics who invite themselves to Limoges to put the ideas of charlatans and conspiracy theorists into people's heads?'

Miguel said he plans to organise a public meeting on the role of science and social progress.

 

'We cannot stand there with our arms crossed in the face of possible charlatans who will come and talk to us about theories from another time,' he told BFMTV.

'When a society is dysfunctional, it takes refuge in values like these. But we must strive to demonstrate the truth from the false by relying on science.'

The Moment You Started to Like Donald Trump

Letโ€™s be honest. You know you like Trump, even if you hate him. And I know the reason why. You were brought up to avoid all people who exaggerated or stretched the truth or who portrayed themselves to be winners by denigrating the opposition. Your parents taught you to be humble and not brag about yourself, even in those instances when it was warranted. In school, your teachers routinely took you down a peg if you thought you were better than the guy who sat next to you. If you felt you knew more than your teacher and showed it, you got detention and a letter about your behavior was sent home with you to your father.

 

In Boy Scouts, the Scoutmaster encouraged teamwork, and so did your high school football coach. Individual sports such as gymnastics were also โ€œteam-drivenโ€ sports, and any wins that accrued were shared accomplishments with other team members. After graduation, when you entered the world of business or academia, the same sentiments applied, except in business, especially if your job was to bring the bacon home to your company. Salesmen were judged on their merits, and bonuses were given on performance.

 

This confused you. Where was the team approach? You didnโ€™t complain, because you liked the extra money and the attention and the promotional possibilities, so you made a mental note about the duality of life lived in the real lane. You read all the books on How to Win Friends and Influence People, The Peter Principle, and then The Art of the Deal. While you liked them all, you were torn about following that seemingly larger-than-life example of typical American drive, Donald Trump. He shocked you from time to time by his outlandish pronouncements and his mega-investments, but you soon realized that he had a formula that worked for him. While you werenโ€™t ready to roll the dice, take out a second mortgage to your home, and emulate him, you admired him in secret (because your friends were berating anyone who liked him).

 

But the unvarnished truth is that he was better than most people โ€” at least among his competitors.And why did you like him? Because deep down, you know in your heart of hearts that Donald Trump is the personification of what America and Americans have been all about for a couple hundred years: bold, brash, full of bravado, fearless, driven, confident, risk-takers, and unapologetic for their triumphs.

That appealed to you on a primitive and historically-accurate and now grown-up level. However, you couldnโ€™t sign on to it just yet because you werenโ€™t brought up that way (especially if you lived in the Midwest, like me) by your parents, your teachers, your coaches, and your pastor. But while you remained confused about it, Trump kept on winning and he finally parlayed his success in business to the White House. You voted for him, or maybe you didnโ€™t, but you at least admired his pluck. Then your peer group took over, and the shaming machine went into high gear. Everyone who supported him was on the good and decent peopleโ€™s hit list. And because you wanted to stay out of the fight and not risk losing friends or family members to a political disagreement, you kept your mouth shut.

 

But itโ€™s now become impossible for you to keep quiet.Youโ€™ve seen how petty jealousy, envy, and the power-crazed political elites have targeted him for destruction, and if they succeed, you figure, they could come after you, too. So youโ€™re now taking a different tack. Youโ€™ve decided that being proud of America, proud of her accomplishments and the principles that made those accomplishments possible, is nothing to apologize for. Youโ€™re now willing to risk personal loss to achieve a more profound and lasting gain. Youโ€™re okay with losing a few friends due to political and philosophical differences. Youโ€™ve manned up and vowed not to cower in fear every time somebody says, โ€œDidnโ€™t you vote for Trump?โ€

On the one hand, heโ€™d like you to believe him without question, but on the other, heโ€™s not afraid if you disagree with him and search the record for yourself.

 

Is Donald Trump the perfect leader, or was he the perfect president? Absolutely not,but no one can claim that his leadership is a radical departure from the essential American character. For proof, take a short journey back in time to the American industrial icons who built our companies and the giants of our research institutions who found cures for debilitating diseases. Look at our pioneers and our presidents who risked everything, even their lives, to change our history. Were some of them outlandish for their times? Did some of their decisions create controversies that dogged them throughout their careers? The answer is โ€œyes.โ€

 

We are all products of our environments, our schooling, and our experiences. That goes for the poorest and the richest among us. But over time, many of us find the courage to follow the truth about ourselves and our leaders. America is like a giant corporation that needs good management, good products, and good people to make them. It also needs good salesmen to sell them and consumers willing to buy them.And when it comes to the quintessential American product, we can argue all day about how itโ€™s marketed, but we should never argue with the man whoโ€™s selling it, particularly when he believes in it himself.

We are deeply concerned by the decisions Ofcom has made today.

We will raise this directly with the regulator in the strongest possible terms.

Ofcom is obliged by law to promote free speech and media plurality, and to ensure that alternative voices are heard.

Its latest decisions, in some cases a year after the programme aired, contravene those duties.

Extraordinarily, Ofcom has determined that a programme which it acknowledges was impartial and lacking in any expression of opinion, still somehow breaches its impartiality rules just because an imaginary viewer might think otherwise.

Ofcom has now arbitrarily changed the test so that it is no longer 'Was it impartial?' but 'Could someone think it might not be?'

This is a chilling development for all broadcasters, for freedom of speech, and for everyone in the United Kingdom.

These decisions go against established precedent and raises serious questions about

Ofcom's oversight over its own regulations.

It appears that Ofcom is trying to extend the regulations, rather than enforcing definitions which have been settled for many years.

Schadenfreude: Biden is flying into rages now against his staff

Joe Biden is not happy about his polling numbers.

According to NBC News, citing 20 anonymous staffers and allies:

WASHINGTON โ€” President Joe Biden was seething.

In a private meeting at the White House in January, allies of the president had just told him that his poll numbers in Michigan and Georgia had dropped over his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas.

 

Both are battleground states he narrowly won four years ago, and he canโ€™t afford any backsliding if he is to once again defeat Donald Trump. He began to shout and swear, a lawmaker familiar with the meeting said.

 

He believed he had been doing what was right, despite the political fallout, he told the group, according to the lawmaker.

For months, Democrats have watched the 2024 campaign unfold with rising alarm as the sitting president struggles to gain ground against his defeated predecessor. Frustrations rippling through the party have reached the top, with Biden at times second-guessing travel decisions and communications strategies that have left much of the electorate clueless about his record, interviews with nearly 20 lawmakers, present and past administration officials and Biden allies show.

 

That's got to be miserable stuff for staffers on the receiving end, particularly since, as NBC reports,they're taking the brunt of his out-of-control anger.

 

He's blaming his staff for many things, not just his bad poll numbers, which hover around 38% public approval at last reading, according to the NBC report, a number so low no president running for re-election in modern times has overcome them.

 

Past presidents, such as Jimmy Carter and George Bush, Sr. were defeated on higher public approval ratings than Joe has. Nobody's as low as Joe.

 

Biden claims that his staff is "cocooning" him away from the public as if his many gaffes and physical stumbles weren't reason enough to do so.

 

Here's an icky quote from a staffer, which has public relations written all over it.

 

โ€œThe president and his advisers have all been eager for him to be out there more and planned for that to take place at the start of the election year, as has been the norm for past incumbents seeking re-election,โ€ the second person familiar with the matter said.

 

Some of staff have complained that Biden is playing defense, trying to shore up his base, not trying to persuade new voters, which sounds about par, particularly since recent reports say he's hemorrhaging working class black and Latino voters who are moving to President Trump.

Others say he should be let out more often and walk faster, even though others still say he's falling flat on his face when he does.

 

Still others say he needs an army of surrogates to carry his message since he can't do it alone.

 

You can tell from the report that the staff don't know what to do, but there Biden is, raging at them for his miserable polling numbers.

 

NBC unquestioningly insists that Biden has a good economy to brag about and voters just don't get it.

That's where the real problem is. No, the economy is not good, and voters know it. Grocery and gas and heating prices are sharply higher while salaries are lower and housing is out of the question for many.

 

Illegals have taken many of the "jobs created" and if not illegals, legal immigrants, which sounds like replacement theory.

 

It's wretched stuff based on the world's most wretched presidential record. It frankly stinks.

 

But that's not where Biden is. He's bellowing at staff about why voters don't love him.

 

They will never be able to tell him the truth and he won't look for it. But look forward to staff resigning as he rages at them โ€“ and lots of tell-all books.

Itโ€™s never a bad time to revisit John Carpenterโ€™s 1988 classic They Live, a hilarious sci-fi thriller that skewers the inequality of the neoliberal era and offers an iconic depiction of capitalist ideology.

tโ€™s almost Halloween, the time of year when every good socialist watches They Live (1988). The cult classic about the politically revealing sunglasses that expose the monstrosity of our overlords and the brutal alien society theyโ€™ve made never fails to satisfy upon repeat viewings.

 

Though it didnโ€™t do well on initial release, They Live is one of John Carpenterโ€™s ever-more-revered films, because of its extraordinary prescience in depicting the fallout from the Reagan Revolution that overwhelmed American society in a disastrously complete way starting in the 1980s. Regarding the admiring reappraisal of the film, Carpenter says, โ€œOver the years, what I was yelling and screaming about in economics, has become painfully clear to a lot of people. . . . The film is specifically about the thoroughness of Reagan-era brainwashing. Thereโ€™s a scene featuring an alien pundit on television spouting that itโ€™s โ€œmorning in Americaโ€ โ€” the presidential campaign slogan Reagan ran on in 1980 โ€” wedged between vapid and insistent commercial ads representing the consumerist madness of the 1980s, when everyone was urged to run up credit card debt, live beyond their means, and worship wealth.

 

The televised ballyhoo tells everyone that things are great and the only problem is โ€œpessimismโ€ on the part of a minority of killjoys. Meanwhile, the film shows, steel mills and factories are closing, unemployment is rising, the homeless population is growing, and police forces are being expanded to raid homeless encampments and crush political protest.

Ironically, it was only after coming to terms with the sobering realization that he โ€œcouldnโ€™t be a rock star,โ€ that the Long Island native leapt into the field of lawyering. โ€œI think I always knew that I wasnโ€™t going to be a rock star, but nevertheless I toyed around with it,โ€ says Meiselas, who earned a B.A. in political science at Washington U. in St. Louis before getting his J.D. at Hofstra U. in Hempstead, N.Y.

 

โ€œTo date myself, I was one of the many who saw the Beatles on โ€˜Ed Sullivanโ€™ and I fell in love with rock and roll, and I knew that I just wanted to be a part of it,โ€ Meiselas recalls with a whiff of youthful nostalgia. โ€œI donโ€™t think I had realistic dreams of being a rock star, but even while I was going to law school I was in a band as the lead singer and songwriter. We played local Manhattan clubs, and Iโ€™m very fortunate that there was no YouTube, internet or social media back then.โ€

 

They say the most successful music industry executives started out as failed musicians, so Meiselas is in good company. But what also makes a music professional rise above the noise is commitment, something that Meiselas recognized as he graduated law school. โ€œIt was a key moment in my life and I looked in the mirror and said: you are not that talented.โ€

 

But with career aspirations still deeply entrenched in a passion for music, Meiselas was unwilling to pivot completely away from his love of rock and roll. It was a serendipitous encounter in the late 1980s with members of the 1960s girl group The Exciters, whose 1963 hit song โ€œTell Himโ€ reached No. 4 on the pop charts, that steered Meiselas toward the โ€œbusiness sideโ€ of entertainment.

 

โ€œThe lead singer of the group was Brenda Reid and her husband, Herb Rooney, was the producer and song arranger,โ€ Meiselas recalls. โ€œCoincidentally, they had a manager who happened to work in the same building where I was working as a young lawyer just starting, trying to get into the entertainment world. This manager worked down the hall and he was still fighting the good fight even though [The Exciters] hadnโ€™t had a hit in many, many years. And one day he came knocking at my door and said, โ€˜Hey, I manage this group, The Exciters, and their song โ€˜Tell Himโ€™ is on the soundtrack of the movie โ€˜The Big Chill,โ€™ and they didnโ€™t get paid. Can you help find a way to get them paid?โ€™โ€

 

Meiselas placed myriad calls and โ€œturned over every rockโ€ and was finally able to hunt down a small label called Liberty Records. โ€œThey were part of EMI and they kind of said, โ€˜Where have you been? Weโ€™ve been looking for The Exciters! Of course we want to pay you!โ€™ โ€

 

That was the beginning of Meiselasโ€™ career as a dealmaker. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t a tremendous amount of money, but being an exploited group of the โ€™60s, it really mattered to them,โ€ says the attorney.

 

A couple of years later, Cory Rooney, Reidโ€™s son, approached Meiselas for some career advice. Rooneyโ€™s friend, Prince Markie Dee, was one of the founding members of the 1980s hip-hop trio the Fat Boys, but he wanted out of the band so that he and Rooney could focus on writing songs and producing.

 

โ€œ[Cory] came to me and said, โ€˜You were so great to my mom and dad, can you help us? Mark wants to get out of the Fat Boys and we want to do serious music together,โ€™ โ€ says Meiselas. โ€œSo I was able to get them out of the deal and their first project was on Uptown Records for an artist named Father MC. He was on the verge of becoming a superstar. His first album went gold, back when gold was meaningful, and he was on his way to reaching the next level. And the young guy doing A&R on the record was someone by the name of Puff Daddy. I think he was about 19. I got him fired from the project so Father MC could A&R it himself. We never really heard from Father MC again career-wise. But Puff came to me a couple of months later and said, โ€˜Hey, will you represent me?โ€™โ€

 

Meiselas has repped Combs, whose music career exploded exponentially in the โ€™90s, and has since gone on to mogul status with a diverse portfolio that includes fashion, top-shelf liquor, television and much more, from that day.

One of those plum opportunities came in the way of meeting Lady Gaga, who was famously dropped by Island Def Jam Records in 2007 before signing with Interscope and launching her Grammy- and Oscar-winning megawatt trajectory. A couple of years later, Meiselas first became aware of Gagaโ€™s artistry. โ€œIt was before she really broke,โ€ he recalls. โ€œIโ€™m a huge [David] Bowie fan and I just saw a lot of Bowie in her. I was really blown away by her even before she became a superstar.โ€

 

Meiselas officially came into the picture in 2011, โ€œat the height of her stardom,โ€ he recalls of the weeks after the release of Gagaโ€™s second album โ€œBorn This Way.โ€ โ€œI get really passionate about artists who are emerging and who I think are special. Sheโ€™s a throwback. I just saw that greatness in her.โ€ Meiselas went on to negotiate such high-profile deals for Gaga as her residency at the Park MGM in Las Vegas and her starring turn โ€” both on screen and on wax โ€” in โ€œA Star Is Born.โ€

 

โ€œTo represent a superstar at her level is a true team effort working with great people โ€” Bobby Campbell her manager, her agents at CAA, Arthur Fogel at Live Nation and of course my incredible partners at the firm, in particular Sonya Guardo,โ€ says Meiselas. Meiselas also praises Slaiby and Amir โ€œCashโ€ Esmailian together with WMEโ€™s Sara Newkirk for the similar partnership role they play with The Weeknd.

Indeed, many stars look to Meiselas for legal advice on recording contracts, endorsement deals, publishing, touring and all manner of music business issues, and his roster reads more like a chart than a client list: The Weeknd, arguably one of the most important new artists to emerge in the past decade; pop-R&B hitmaker Usher; the influential rapper Nas; Cash Money/Young Money icons Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne; the estate of Whitney Houston; hip-hop upstarts Rae Sremmurd and NAV; and โ€œCall Me Maybeโ€ singer Carly Rae Jepsen โ€” not to mention newcomers Ella Mai (of โ€œBooโ€™ed Upโ€ fame, she was Grammy-nominated this year), Madison Beer and, triumphantly, Bebe Rexha.

 

While Meiselas tends to rep musicians once they are already firmly established, there are instances โ€” as there were with some regularity during the height of firm founder Allen Grubmanโ€™s days, when the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Madonna were the upstarts โ€” when a music attorney will take on a developing or so-called โ€œbaby actโ€ and help steer the artist towards a recording or publishing deal.

Of course, thereโ€™s no better use of influence than to help create a platform through which his clients can make a deep, widespread philanthropic impact. It was Meiselas who furnished the legal expertise in 1994 when Combs founded Daddyโ€™s House Social Programs, a New York City-based organization providing recreation and education for underprivileged and homeless urban youth. More recently, Combs has been involved with charter schools in Harlem and in the Bronx. Says Meiselas: โ€œItโ€™s always been very important for him to give back to the community.โ€

 

Other clientsโ€™ charities include Usherโ€™s New Look Foundation, a non-profit that serves youth through a 10-year program aimed at developing passion-driven global leaders. And thereโ€™s Gagaโ€™s Born This Way Foundation, led by the singer and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, founded in 2012 to support the mental and emotional wellness of young people โ€œand empower them to create a kinder and braver world.โ€

 

While Meiselas notes that heโ€™s โ€œin no way the driving forceโ€ of these massive philanthropic endeavors, heโ€™s proud and inspired by his clients as they seek to foment greater good in the world. โ€œWhen you find someone whoโ€™s so passionate about giving back, like Gaga and Usher, I really admire that,โ€ he says. โ€œI represent my clients and their passions are my passions, especially when they care about issues that are important and that I also believe in. Hopefully through the things that we do, be it contributions or attending events or providing pro bono legal aid, itโ€™s helping their dreams come true.โ€

 

Itโ€™s Meiselasโ€™s eldest son, Ben, who seems to have inherited that same proclivity for giving back. Partner and head of the civil litigation department of Geragos & Geragos, Ben Meiselas has steered two of the most high-profile civil cases in recent American history: Colin Kaepernickโ€™s landmark lawsuit against the NFL and the victorious class-action suits against the now-infamous Fyre Festival and its founder, Billy McFarland.

 

โ€œThe work that he does is really about helping people with some of the more challenging issues that we face today,โ€ says Meiselas. โ€œHeโ€™s really the lawyer fighting for those important causes on behalf of his clients.โ€

But as Meiselas tells it, there was a time when Ben wasnโ€™t certain he even wanted to graduate from college โ€” the son, like father, was seduced by the biz. โ€œHe was introduced to the music scene at a very early age,โ€ says the elder Meiselas, noting that Benโ€™s bar mitzvah party was held at Justinโ€™s, Combsโ€™ now-defunct restaurant in Manhattan.

 

โ€œHe used to go to the music studios with me and had early contact with all these artists,โ€ Meiselas recalls. โ€œThen he went to George Washington University. One year, he had this fun situation where he was working with Puff in Miami and he was running around with, I think, Bruce Willis and Nelly. He was supposed to be going back to school. He didnโ€™t get on that plane. I tracked him down and heโ€™s like, โ€˜Dad, I donโ€™t need to go back to school. Iโ€™m already working.โ€™ And I was like, โ€˜Guess whose kid is going to college?โ€™ And he said, โ€˜Who?โ€™ And I go, โ€˜Puffโ€™s kid is going to college. And if his kid is going to college, youโ€™re going to college!โ€™ And then, fortunately, he got on that next plane.โ€

 

As for what comes next in his career, Meiselas is content with continuing to focus on his role in the music industry โ€” โ€œRemember Iโ€™m a frustrated rock star, so I was never looking to be a courtroom attorney,โ€ he says โ€” and spending time with his family, which includes wife, former publicist Beth Katz, and their teenage daughter, Rachel, who has her own radio show at her Long Island high school and aspires to be a sports reporter. Meiselas has three sons from a previous marriage: Ben; Brett, who has won two Emmy Awards working on โ€œThe Ellen Showโ€ and now works as a producer and social media executive for Cubevision and the Big3; and Jordan, an advertising account executive for Translation in Brooklyn.

 

โ€œI have always tried to balance my career in the music industry with being a father to my children โ€” from coaching the kids in every sport to supporting them in their career goals,โ€ says Meiselas.

 

He also serves as a guest lecturer each semester at his alma mater, Washington U. โ€œIn this class I teach they focus on entertainment and music, and the number one question I get is, how do break into the business? And there really is no one story,โ€ he says. โ€œThere are a few things I can recommend to someone about how to pursue their passion, but, for me, I was just always looking to find a way to get into show business. Because I really have no desire to be any other type of lawyer.โ€

In public, President Biden likes to whisper to make a point.In private, he's prone to yelling.

 

Behind closed doors, Biden has such a quick-trigger temper that some aides try to avoid meeting alone with him. Some take a colleague, almost as a shield against a solo blast.

 

The president's admonitions include:"God dammit, how the fk don't you know this?!," "Don't fking bullsht me!" and "Get the f*k out of here!"โ€” according to current and former Biden aides who have witnessed and been on the receiving end of such outbursts.

 

Why it matters: The private eruptions paint a more complicated picture of Biden as a manager and president than his carefully cultivated image as a kindly uncle who loves Aviator sunglasses and ice cream.

 

Some Biden aides think the president would be better off occasionally displaying his temper in public as a way to assuage voter concerns that the 80-year-old president is disengaged and too old for the office.

Zoom in: Senior and lower-level aides alike can be in Biden's line of fire. "No one is safe," said one administration official.

 

Biden aides still talk about how angry he got at Jeff Zients, then the administration's "COVID czar," in late 2021 when there was a shortage of testing kits as the Omicron variant spread. (The rage was temporary. Zients is now Biden's chief of staff.)

 

A spokesperson for Zients told Axios: "I'm not going to speak to what internal convos may or may not have happened between Jeff and the president."

The White House declined to comment.

 

"There's no question that the Biden temper is for real. It may not be as volcanic as Bill Clintonโ€™s, but it's definitely there," said Chris Whipple, author of "The Fight of His Life: Inside Joe Bidenโ€™s White House."

 

Whipple's book quotes former White House press secretary Jen Psaki as saying: "I said to [Biden] multiple times, 'I'll know we have a really good, trusting relationship when you yell at me the first time.'"

 

Whipple notes: "Psaki wouldn't have to wait long."

 

Zoom out: Biden's temper comes in the form of angry interrogations rather than erratic tantrums.

 

He'll grill aides on topics until it's clear they donโ€™t know the answer to a question โ€” a routine that some see as meticulous and others call "stump the chump" or "stump the dummy."

Being yelled at by the president has become an internal initiation ceremony in this White House, aides say โ€” if Biden doesn't yell at you, it could be a sign he doesn't respect you.

 

Ted Kaufman, Biden's longtime chief of staff when the future president represented Delaware in the Senate, told Axios that Biden's process is policy-driven, and has made him a strong executive.

 

"If there is something that's not in the brief, he's going to find it," he said. "It's not to embarrass people, it's because he wants to get to the right decision. Most people who have worked for him like the fact that he challenges them and gets them to a better decision."

 

Some Biden aides argue that the president's rages reflect his high expectations for his staff.

 

"Speaking Biden" is a particular skill, they said.It can take years to learn to navigate his moodiness, and anticipate what information he's going to ask for in a briefing.

 

Some administration officials, many of whom went to elite schools, struggle with Biden's demand to ditch wonky, acronym-filled language and brief him as if they were talking to a close family member who isn't in the D.C. bubble.

 

Biden's defenders acknowledge he can be tough. But they also say he can be more generous and compassionate than many powerful politicians and can make them feel like family. That's partly why so many aides have worked with Biden for decades, and go in and out of his orbit, they say.

In January 2022, he was caught on a hot mic calling Fox News' Peter Doocy a "stupid son of a bitch."

 

Jeff Connaughton, a former Biden campaign and Senate aide who was chief of staff to Kaufman when he filled Biden's seat in the Senate, wrote about Biden's temper in his 2012 book on Washington corruption, "The Payoff: Why Wall Street Wins."

 

Connaughton wrote that as a senator,Biden was an "egomaniacal autocrat โ€ฆ determined to manage his staff through fear."

 

He told of a time during the 2008 presidential campaign when a 23-year-old fundraising staffer got into the car with Biden.

 

"Okay, senator, time to do some fundraising calls," the aide said. Biden responded by looking at him and snapping: "Get the f**k out of the car."

 

Connaughton told Axios that Biden "hides his sharper edge to promote his folksy Uncle Joe image โ€” which is why, when flashes of anger break through, it seems so out of public character."
