Ukrainian army gripped by gambling addiction – MP

90% of soldiers spend their earnings on online casinosand sports betting platforms, Aleksey Goncharenko claims

The Ukrainian army has a huge gambling problem, Aleksey Goncharenko, a senior Ukrainian MP, wrote on his Telegram channel on Thursday. The lawmaker said 90% of soldiers are wasting money in online casinos and on sports betting platforms, instead of saving it for the future.

“This is not just a problem.It’s crazy. 9 out of 10 soldierson the front lines have a casino or gambling problem. Money is lost. Then they take loans. And so it goes in a circle,” he complained. (How do they have time to gamble?)

According to Goncharenko, the problem is severe not only because itis “destroying the military morale”on the frontlines, but because soldiers who lose their earnings willbecome “perfect targets”for the criminal world once they return home penniless.(if they didn’t fill their soldiers with drugs daily, maybe they wouldn’t gamble.)

“Right now, we are simply laundering money out of our country’s budget. But we are also creating a problem for the future,” he warned.

The lawmaker suggested that the situation should be dealt with by the government. He proposed monitoring online gambling platforms and banning military personnel from accessing them. He also offered to reform the local eOselya program, a government initiative that provides affordable housing loans for soldiers, to make it more appealing for them as an investment.

Goncharenko’s statements came in response to a story on Strana.ua (https://strana.ua/) drawing attention to the army’s gambling problem after several angry posts on X (formerly Twitter) by Pavel Petrichenko, a Ukrainian soldier whoaccused authorities of failing to rein in the online casino market.

“I wonder what needs to happen for the epidemic of gambling addiction to be noticed in Ukrainian society and especially in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. It was caused by idiots who launched an uncontrolled online casino market.If you decide to legalize this crap, then at least control it,” he wrote on X on Wednesday.

Petrichenko proposed setting up a register of gambling platforms and introducing mandatory verification of players for the duration of the current conflict, so as to block users who receive salaries from the military from accessing such venues.

Ukraine passed legislationlegalizing various forms of online gambling back in 2020. The law allowed online casinos, poker, and sports betting sites to freely operate in the country. According to analysts, due toweak initial policy decisions and corruption, Kiev cannot adequately control the operations or monitor the income of these platforms. As a result, they withhold tens of billions of hryvnias (hundreds of millions of US dollars)they should be paying in taxes from the country’s budget.

A prestigious university has been branded a 'disgrace' after it awarded the world's oldest photojournalism prize for a picture of a mutilated and murdered October 7 victim.

Shani Louk, 22, became a symbol of the brutal Hamas attack after the world saw the picture of gunmen rushing her half-naked corpse back to Gaza on the back of a pick-up.

That photo was the centerpiece of the submission that won photo agency AP the Team Picture Story of the Year category from the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism.

'RJI thinks a horrifying picture of Shani Louk's half-clothed, dead body is award-winning work,' tweeted GOP House whip Tom Emmer.

'Disgusting.'

The 22-year-old German-Israeli was among 364 people killed at the SuperNova Festival which she was attending with her boyfriend.

Family photos of the young woman showed a happy and carefree spirit at the outset of her adult life and friends of her family have said that that is how she should be remembered.

'This is how we choose to remember the beautiful Shani Louk,' wrote one. 'We will not allow her memory to be trampled by the inhuman thugs celebrating the AP photo of her tragic murder.'

'I am horrified,' wrote another. 'This is a picture of terrorists parading a dead body of a Jewish woman after they murdered her. Shame on you.'

Louk's family and other victims of the SuperNova killings sued AP and fellow news agency Reuters in February accusing them of collusion in the atrocities they documented.

They claim that agency freelancers were 'longstanding Hamas affiliates and full participants in the terrorist attack', who knew it was about to take place.

Lobby group HonestReporting, which raised concerns about the coverage posted its 'congratulations' to AP for winning the award.

'How does it feel to do so on the back of Palestinian photojournalists who infiltrated Israel on Oct. 7 and took photos like the one below of Shani Louk's dead body in a Hamas pickup?' they demanded.

'Was RJI bothered about that before bestowing the award?'

The sentiment was echoed by Israeli MP and diplomat Danny Danon who tweeted: 'This photo captures Hamas terrorists desecrating the body of Shani Louk, may her soul rest in peace.

'Yet the AP news agency proudly received an award for it. Their continued pride in their photographers' 'work' and involvement in the atrocities is shameful.'

Earthquake hits Greece: South of the country is shaken by 5.7 magnitude tremors, which is felt as far as Athens

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 has struck southern Greece, being felt as far away as Athens, Malta and Crete according to initial reports.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but the quake appeared to be followed by a string of aftershocks.

The quake struck just after 7am on Friday morning and was centred beneath the seabed near the Strofades islands, about 75 miles south-southwest of the western city of Patras, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute.

A 4.5 magnitude quake subsequently hit the central Mediterranean Sea at 9:15am.

Greece lies in a highly seismically active region and earthquakes are common. The vast majority cause no injuries and little to no damage.The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (CSEM) reported a number of apparent aftershocks in and around Greece this morning, including a 2.4 magnitude tremor in the region of Crete and a 2.5 magnitude quake in the Aegean Sea.

Three smaller earthquakes were also reported in southern Greece within the space of nine minutes, between 8:21am and 8:30am.

Two had struck just minutes before, recording magnitudes of 3.1 and 2.5 in the Peloponnese. The initial 5.7 magnitude quake was initially reported as 5.9.

The quake originated some 10.5miles below the sea bed, close to the Strofades island. Greece was previously hit by a magnitude 4.8 quake of note some 50 miles (80km) northeast of the capital in January.

Experts said the tremor would have caused light shaking, likely breaking windows and causing objects to fall from shelves.

With the event just three months away, the attack in Russia has prompted Paris to tighten anti-terrorism measures

France has called on its international allies to help enhance security for the upcoming Olympic Games, in Paris, AFP reported on Thursday, citing sources in the government.

According to the report, Paris has asked 46 nations to send 2,185 police reinforcements for the duration of the games in order to take over tasks that require additional specialists.

The French authorities have not yet confirmed that such a request was made, but Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz on Thursday announced on X (formerly Twitter) that his country’s armed forces would “join the international coalition established by France” to provide additional security at the Olympics. He didn’t reveal the size of the contingent Warsaw plans to send, but noted that it would deploy canine units whose job will be to “detect explosives and counteract terrorist activities.”

An Interior Ministry source told AFP that the request for reinforcements is a “classic move for host countries ahead of the organization of major events.” However, the news comes just days after Paris raised the terrorism threat level in the country to its highest level following the deadly attack in Moscow, which killed more than 140 people.

On March 22, four gunmen stormed the Crocus City Hall concert venue just outside Moscow, going on a shooting spree and setting the building on fire. The gunmen had allegedly been recruited on behalf of ISIS-K, an Afghanistan-based offshoot of the terrorist organization Islamic State.

Russian investigators later revealed that the perpetrators had received funding for the attack from Ukraine.

In a press statement following the attack in Russia, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said that the threat of terrorism in France is “real and strong,” adding that the country’s intelligence services have foiled 45 terror plots since 2017. He noted that France’s current anti-terror security measures, part of the country’s national security alert system called the Vigipirate Plan, will be tightened in the coming weeks, with security forces maintaining a more visible presence on streets and in front of possible targets such as government buildings, transportation infrastructure, and schools.

The Vigipirate Plan has been in place since 2015, when France faced a series of devastating terror acts linked to Islamic State. They included the attack at the Bataclan concert hall, the Stade de France stadium, and drive-by shootings and suicide bombings across Paris.

This year’s Olympics will run from July 26 to August 11. Around 45,000 French police and gendarmes, 18,000 troops and up to 22,000 private security guards are expected to work at the games, AFP reported, citing official figures.

So they decided to do some testing, and we now have the results. It turns out that the mystery illness is actually “the same strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) that’s been in the U.S. for two years”…

A mystery illness that’s impacted dairy herds in the Texas Panhandle, New Mexico and Kansas now has a diagnosis: Influenza A. USDA says genetic sequencing revealed it’s the same strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) that’s been in the U.S. for two years.

APHIS says the “National Veterinary Services Laboratories” detected Influenza “A” in samples from several impacted herds in Texas, Kansas and New Mexico. The virus is carried by wild waterfowl, which experts think is how the illness is spreading.

The experts did not think that bird flu would be a threat to dairy cattle.

Unfortunately, the experts were wrong.

Scientists were able to confirm the presence of the bird flu by testing samples of milk from sick cows…

According to USDA, as of March 25, unpasteurized, clinical samples of milk from sick cattle collected from two dairy farms in Kansas and one in Texas, as well as an oropharyngeal swab from another dairy in Texas, have tested positive for the virus.

Now that bird flu has been identified as the culprit, dairy farmers are being urged to strictly implement “all standard biosecurity measures”…

Officials are strongly advising dairy producers to use all standard biosecurity measures. They note it’s important for producers to clean and disinfect all livestock watering devices and isolate drinking water where it might be contaminated by waterfowl. Farmers are also being asked to notify their herd veterinarian if they suspect any cattle within their herd are displaying symptoms of this condition.

I was quite shocked to learn that this was happening right here in our own country.

The good news is that all milk from sick cows is being kept out of the food chain…

“Also, routine testing and well-established protocols for U.S. dairy will continue to ensure that only safe milk enters the food supply. In keeping with the federal Grade ‘A’ Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), milk from sick cows must be collected separately and is not allowed to enter the food supply chain. This means affected dairy cows are segregated, as is normal practice with any animal health concern, and their milk does not enter the food supply. Consumers in the United States and around the world can remain confident in the safety and quality of U.S. dairy,” the statement said.

Will we eventually get to a point where entire herds of dairy cows have to be killed in order to prevent the spread of the disease?

The goat contracted the virus after a poultry flock on the same premises was depopulated in February due to the virus. Following the confirmation of HPAI in the goat, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health quarantined all other species on the premises. The Board said is working with USDA to investigate the transmission of the virus in this case.

It appears to be just a matter of time before the bird flu starts becoming a significant threat to humans as well.

According to Dr. Chris Walzer, “dozens of mammalian species” have already been infected…

In January, Dr Chris Walzer, the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Executive Director of Health, in a statement, said: “It (H5N1) has infected over 150 wild and domestic avian species around the globe as well as dozens of mammalian species. The bird flu outbreak is the worst globally and also in US history, with hundreds-of-millions of birds dead since it first turned up in domestic waterfowl in China in 1996.”

We better hope that the bird flu does not mutate into a form that can spread very easily among humans.

Because according to the NIH, bird flu can have a death rate of more than 50 percent in humans…

As of November 2022, 240 cases of human avian influenza A (H5N1) virus have been confirmed from the Western Pacific Region since 2003 with a case fatality rate of 56%.

A global bird flu crisis would be far worse than anything that we have experienced during the past several years.

Just try to imagine the panic that would ensue if H5N1 were to start killing millions of people around the world.

Hopefully that will not happen any time soon.

Earlier today, I did come across an article about a 21-year-old student in Vietnam that was just killed by H5N1…

A student in Vietnam has died of H5N1 bird flu, according to the country’s Department of Preventive Medicine.

The 21-year-old man developed symptoms of fever and a cough on March 11. A week later, he presented at Ninh Hoa Medical Center in Vietnam’s eastern Khanh Hoa province, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia and transferred to Khanh Hoa General Hospital.

The student tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza on March 20, and further tests conducted two days later at the Nha Trang Pasteur Institute showed the patient was infected with the H5N1 subtype.

Let us pray that this was just an isolated incident.

Meanwhile, other pestilences continue to spread all over the planet.

For example, dengue fever has become a major problem in Brazil, and now government officials in Puerto Rico have declared a dengue fever epidemic…

On Monday, government leaders in Puerto Rico declared a dengue epidemic after a spike in cases of the mosquito-borne disease hit the island.

From the start of the year through March 10, there were 549 cases, including 341 hospitalizations and 29 severe cases, according to the most recent data provide by the Puerto Rico Department of Health. Cases are concentrated in cities including San Juan, Bayamon, Guaynabo and Carolina.

I have been repeatedly warning my readers that global pestilences would be one of the major themes of the next several years.

Bird flu has already killed hundreds of millions of birds, and now it is spreading in mammals.

A widespread bird flu outbreak among humans would have the potential to be absolutely catastrophic, and so we will want to watch this story very, very closely.

Members of Canada's House of Commons have successfully opened a new investigation into a pair of Chinese scientists who spied for Beijing while they were employed at a microbiology lab in Winnipeg. The scientists were fired after an investigation revealed they had been sharing classified documents and materials from the Winnipeg National Microbiology Laboratory and posed a 'national security threat' to Canada.

Xiangguo Qiu and her husband, Keding Cheng, were escorted out of the lab in 2019 and fired in 2021. Reports suggest they have since resumed life in China under new names.

Still-secret sources first raised concerns about Dr Qiu in September 2018 when her name appeared on a patent filed in China for a treatment for Ebola - research the lab had not been told about.

Suspicions were then raised about Dr Cheng in October after he was found to have invited students into the lab who later attempted to leave carrying two clear plastic bags containing vials of an unknown substance. Later the same month, Dr Cheng was also caught trying to leave the lab carrying two empty Styrofoam containers, which BSL-4 labs use to transport materials, including viruses. The PHAC, concerned by the reports, launched an investigation into the pair in December 2018 - which revealed numerous security violations, including that the pair had repeatedly allowed restricted visitors to download experimental data from the lab and send it to their email accounts.
