3 seafood processors announce closures, selloffs following historic price collapse for Alaska fishing industry

 

Three major seafood processors in Alaska have announced plans to sell off their plants or temporarily close for the upcoming fishing seasons. Trident, Peter Pan Seafood Company and most recently OBI Seafoods – just last month – have all cited turbulent market conditions for their decisions.

 

Kirsten Dobroth is the Alaska reporter for Undercurrent News, which is a commercial fishing and seafood industry trade magazine. She’s been following this market downturn.

 

The following transcript has been lightly edited for clarity.

 

Ava White: Kirsten, it seems like one company closing a plant would be pretty drastic, let alone three. How bad are things right now, and can you give us an overview of what’s happening?

 

Kirsten Dobroth: Yeah, I think a lot of people would say bad is an understatement and historic is a more appropriate description of the market situation. There was a lot of attention this summer on low base prices paid out to fishermen for salmon. But prices for pollock products also crashed last year, so that’s the state’s two biggest species by volume and value. Since then, this market collapse has spread to pretty much every species. Black cod, for instance, is typically one of the more lucrative dollar per pound fish caught in Alaska, and prices were so low at the end of last year that processors weren’t even buying it. And I should clarify, by “prices” I’m referring to both the dockside price paid to fishermen and the wholesale price paid to processors – so, no one is really safe here, both sides are hurting.

 

AW: It seems like this is pretty all encompassing. Why is this happening?

KD: That’s a good question and there’s a plethora of answers – most of them come down to global market conditions. Inflation and the pandemic fundamentally changed consumer spending habits – and at the same time, made it more expensive for fishermen and processors to operate. Trade conditions have also changed with China, and a strong US dollar has made it harder to sell Alaska seafood products in places like Japan, which is traditionally a big buyer. The amount of Russian seafood products in the market has gotten a lot of attention. High interest rates have also hit processors particularly hard. And then there’s just a lot of supply out there, so basic supply and demand – you have these tough market conditions and a lot of product sitting in cold storage that’s getting harder to sell.

 

AW: Now processing facilities are closing or being sold. What happens to these communities that are losing plants or have large fishing fleets?

 

KD: Well, I think in the short term they’ll be looking at how to keep people working. In Kodiak, where I live, Trident’s plant – which the company has said it will sell – employs hundreds of people, many of them live here year round. And then boats that sell to Trident, where do they bring fish – especially if other companies are also struggling financially? Peter Pan Seafood Company announced last month that its plant in King Cove won’t open for winter, and city officials there told me they’re expecting a hit to fish landing taxes which make up more than half their general fund budget. But I think it’s also really important to zoom out on this – Alaska’s seafood industry employs tens of thousands of people that collectively earned more than a billion and a half dollars back in 2022 when times were good. Another $160 million went to taxes and fees that year. This isn’t just an issue for Kodiak and King Cove – this is a statewide problem.

 

AW: Is there any financial relief coming their way?

 

KD: That’s yet to be seen. About three quarters of the Alaska State Legislature sent a letter to the US Department of Agriculture last month asking for more support and more purchases of Alaskan seafood. The USDA purchased a little more than $200 million worth of Alaska seafood products last year, so that’s provided a boost while things have been bad. But what else they can do and any additional support in the state budget is unclear at this point. It’s worth pointing out that Gov. Dunleavy’s state of the state address didn’t include any mention of fisheries except for Pebble Mine and an allusion to “wild harvest.”

 

AW: So, I guess looking forward the big question is are there signs that the fishing industry will rebound anytime soon?

 

KD: I think that’s what everyone is asking. I’ve talked to a number of sources on the processing side of things who think we haven’t hit rock bottom. I’ve talked to fishermen who go out for seasons that either just started up or start up soon and they’re looking at another year of really depressing dockside prices. President Biden just signed an executive order that effectively stops Russian seafood products from getting into the US, and there’s been some optimism in the industry particularly in Alaska about that. But unfortunately I don’t think anyone can say where we go from here.

Netanyahu Promises Talmud Will Be Israeli Law

 

Netanyahu tells Likud hareidi leader Hebrew calendar will be official calendar of state in new Basic

Law, Jewish law basis of legal system.

 

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu reportedly revealed at a Likud conference on Wednesday some remarkable facets of the Basic Law he submitted last Thursday, which would enshrine Israel's status as the nation-state of the Jewish people.

 

Netanyahu told the head of Likud's hareidi division Yaakov Vider at the conference that he intends to make the Hebrew calendar, which is based on Jewish law, the official calendar of Israel, reports Kikar Hashabat.

 

The new law also would establish the Talmud, the core work of Jewish law, as an official basis for Israeli state law.

 

"I'm going to personally be involved in the law defining the state of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people," Netanyahu reportedly told Vider. "It's a very important law that will influence how Israel will look in the future."

 

"I want to anchor in this law, that it will be a Basic Law that the state of Israel arose and exists on the basis of the Torah and the Jewish tradition," Netanyahu explained, promising to define the Hebrew calendar as the official state calendar.

 

Netanyahu also promised that "we will define in the law the Gemara as a basis for the Israeli legal system," referencing the Jewish legal text analyzing the Mishnah, a legal work of the Jewish sages, which together form the Talmud.

 

Discussing the new Basic Law on Sunday in a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu stated "the existence of the State of Israel as a Jewish state does not actualize itself enough in our Basic Laws, which is what the proposed law aims to fix."

 

Netanyahu stressed the law would not restrict the rights of non-Jewish citizens of Israel. He further dismissed opposition to the law by leftist MKs, foremost among them Justice Minister Tzipi Livni who pledged to block the law.

 

"They want a Palestinian national state to be built beside us, and to turn the State of Israel, meanwhile, into a bi-national state, Jewish-Arab, within our restricted borders," Netanyahu argued, saying the new Basic Law would prevent such a situation.

Benjamin Franklin established the first commercial cannabis operation with his large hemp mill that converted cannabis fibers into paper. “They put the National Security Council in charge and treated it as an act of war,” said Latypova.

 

According to Operation Warp Speed/ASPR reports, the DoD ordered, oversaw, and tightly managed the development, manufacture, and distribution of Covid countermeasures,mainly utilizing the DoD’s previously established network of military contractors and consortia.

 

Department of Defense, BARDA, and HHS ordered all Covid countermeasures, including “vaccines” as prototype demonstrations of large-scale manufacturing, avoiding regulations and transparency under Other Transaction Authority. As prototypes used under EUA during PHE, Covid countermeasures, including “vaccines,” need not comply with the U.S. laws for manufacturing quality, safety, and labeling.

 

“The implication is that theU.S.Government authorized and funded the deployment of noncompliant biological materials on Americans without clarifying their “prototype” legal status, making the materials not subject to normal regulatory oversight, all while maintaining a fraudulent pseudo- “regulatory” presentation to the public,” said Latypova.

 

“Most incredible is the fact that current Laws enacted by the United States Congress appear to make the coverup actions LEGAL!”

 

Under the PHE, medical countermeasures are not regulated or safeguarded as pharmaceutical products (21 USC 360bbb-3(k).

 

The American people were led to believe thatthe FDA, CDC, and figureheads like Anthony Fauci oversaw the COVID-19 vaccine program.Their involvement was an orchestrated information operation. All decisions concerning the COVID-19 vaccine research, materials acquisition, distribution, and information sharing were tightly controlled by the DoD.

 

Hundreds of Covid countermeasurescontractshave been uncovered. Many disclosures are in redacted form. However, Latypova and Watt have found sources to fill in the details. A review of these contracts indicates a high degree of control by the U.S. Government (DoD/BARDA). It specifies the scope of deliverables as “demonstrations” and “prototypes” only while excluding clinical trials and manufacturing quality control from the scope of work paid for by the contracts. To ensure that the Pharma is free to conduct the fake clinical trials without financial risk, the contracts include the removal of all liability for the manufacturers and any contractors along the supply and distribution chain under the 2005 PREP Act and related federal legislation.

American aid ‘keeps history on right track’ – Zelensky

Ukraine’s leader has thanked US legislators for approving the much-needed assistance during the conflict with Russia

 

The decision by the US House of Representatives to allocate tens of billions of dollars to Kiev will bring Ukraine closer to a “just end” of the conflict with Russia, President Vladimir Zelensky wrote on X (formerly Twitter), thanking Speaker Mike Johnson for his support.

 

The nearly $61 billion package approved on Saturday contains the funding for the purchase of weapons and military equipment, as well direct financial assistance to Ukraine. Passed after months of delays and political wrangling, the bill moves next to the Senate, which already indicated in February that it will approve it.

 

“I am grateful to the United States House of Representatives, both parties, and personally Speaker Mike Johnson for the decision that keeps history on the right track,” Zelensky wrote, suggesting that the aid would “keep the war from expanding,” and “save thousands and thousands of lives.” (Fuck off you little tyrant)

 

“Just peace and security can only be attained through strength,” he wrote. Zelensky added that Ukraine “will undoubtedly use American assistance to strengthen both of our nations and bring a just end to this war closer.”

$500 Russian Drones Destroying $10,000,000 American Tanks – NYT

 

Moscow’s forces have destroyed five US-made Abrams in Ukraine and damaged another three, the newspaper has claimed.

 

Expensive American M1 Abrams tanks delivered to Ukraine are increasingly falling prey to Russian drones that cost only a fraction as much, the New York Times reported on Saturday. Even “one of the most powerful symbols of American military might” is not invulnerable to such attacks, it said.

 

At least five US-supplied tanks out of the 31 provided by Washington have already been destroyed by Russia, the American media outlet said, adding that three others had been “moderately damaged.”

 

In most cases, the tanks have been destroyed by first-person-view (FPV) kamikaze drones, also known as loitering munitions. Such drones are capable of actively maneuvering before hitting their target.

 

In at least one instance, though, an Abrams tank was taken out in a duel against a Russian T-72B3 main battle tank. The Russian military has published upwards of a dozen clips, mostly taken from drones, showing the destruction of US-supplied equipment.

 

According to the NYT, the tanks turned out to be “more easily taken out by exploding drones than some officials and experts had initially assumed.”

 

The drones’ accuracy exceeds 90%, the NYT said, adding that they are also capable of hitting heavy armor in its weakest spots.The UAVs “can cost as little as $500,” the paper reported,are capable of “taking out a $10 million Abrams tank.” The paper also admitted that there was no “easy, or single” way to defend a tank against a drone attack.

 

US-made Abrams tanks made their long-expected appearance on the front line in late February amid the Ukrainian effort to halt advancing Russian troops after the capture of the Donbass town of Avdeevka. A batch of 31 M1 Abrams tanks was pledged to Kiev early last year, ahead of the ultimately disastrous Ukrainian counteroffensive. The delivery was made in full only by mid-October, when the ill-fated push had already largely been exhausted.

Although Ryder did not specify how many personnel could be sent to Kiev, citing “operational security and force protection reasons,” sources familiar with the matter told Politico that the number would be up to 60.

 

The additional advisers could work at the Office of Defense Cooperation at the embassy, Ryder explained.

 

Ukraine is struggling to regain the initiative on the battlefield in the wake of a failed counteroffensive last summer, as well as more recent losses exacerbated by the dwindling supply of foreign ammunition.

 

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently admitted that “things on the battlefield begin to shift a bit in Russia’s favor” with Kiev’s forces struggling “in terms of holding the line.”According to Politico, the advisers would be tasked with helping the Ukrainians with the newly delivered equipment as the fighting is expected to intensify during the summer.

 

Although President Joe Biden promised that American troops will not be sent to fight Russia in Ukraine, Moscow has repeatedly warned that it considers the US and other NATO members de facto participants in the conflict. Russia further criticized French President Emmanuel Macron and other European politicians who said that they could not rule out Western boots on the ground in Ukraine in the future.

 

Russia maintains that no amount of foreign aid would change the course of the conflict or save Ukraine from defeat.
